This was the day after Big Ron announced that he had the "best job in football" and wouldn't be leaving Wednesday to join Villa.
And Blackpool losing out in the 4th division playoffs...and Sir brian making his first apiuntment at Leicester:

Angry Villa search again
BYLINE: By Chris Moore

ASTON Villa are back to square one in their search for a successor to Jozef Venglos as manager, after yesterday's events at Hillsborough.
Doug Ellis, the Villa chairman, maintained a stony silence all day, refusing to handle media calls. ''He made no comment before all this and has nothing to say now,'' a club spokesman said.
There is no question, however, that Ellis was stunned by Ron Atkinson's change of mind and livid that his planned deal had been effectively scuppered by the embarrassing timing of the leak, just 24 hours before Sheffield Wednesday's civic reception.
Atkinson was not, in any case, the supporters' choice. A telephone poll organised by the Birmingham Evening Mail found 538 of those polled wanted Kenny Dalglish. Bruce Rioch, of Millwall, was second with 458 votes, with Terry Venables (422) third. Atkinson (288) was fifth behind Brian Little (294).
Of the other candidates, Peter Withe received 168, Neil Warnock 151, Arthur Cox 141, Lou Macari 104, Dave Bassett 63 and Ray Harford 21.
ne name so far not linked with the job, but which could come into the reckoning, is that of Bobby Robson, the former England manager, who is only two games away from winning the Dutch league championship with PSV Eindhoven. But if PSV take the title, Robson is expected to remain in charge for another season.
Ellis has said he is looking for an experienced British manager with a proven record as a winner, and Robson fits that bill.
Leicester City and Darlington have agreed on a compensation figure for Brian Little, who became manager at Filbert Street on Wednesday. His replacement at Darlington is Frank Gray, the former Scottish international, who has been the club's player-coach for the last two years.
Little made his first appointment yesterday when the former Aston Villa and Leicester player, Allan Evans, joined the coaching staff.
Torquay United gained promotion to the third division last night when they beat Blackpool 5-4 on penalties after the sides had fought out a 2-2 draw after extra time at Wembley.

Funny reading that about the Evening Mail poll. I remember him being the man I wanted, above all else.
The right manager at the right time. We may see us lift the title once more, but I doubt I'll ever see the quality of the 92-93 season again.

Same LeeB.
I thought the general feeling was he was the fans choice, just goes to show I guess.
BFR's book covers that period and makes interesting reading. Basically the Villa job was the one he had always wanted and it used to kill him driving past VP on the way to Hillsborough. But he was popular at Wednesday and had major (and in the end well founded) doubts about Herbert.
Another good find Chico.

Starting with his very first - what a scorcher that was!

Just think, if we had got Bobby Robson we may also have signed the young Brazilian Ronaldo.

Maybe, but then we'd never have signed Paul Mortimer.

I never thought of that. A price worth paying.

Or John Fashanu.

TC, we share a birthday - 'twas my eighteenth this day. Felt well chuffed when BFR said he wasn't coming.
Then, of course, he did.

I met his daughter on holiday once. She was quite fit from what I can remember.
