Title: 90s League Cup Triumphs: Your Favourite?
Post by: Chris Harte on July 14, 2007, 05:14:07 PM
Which of Villa's 1990s League Cup wins was your favourite, and why?

Was it 1994, overcoming the odds to deny Man Utd the treble? Or perhaps the stroll that was the 1996 final versus Leeds? Maybe one has better memories for you because of what happened on the route to the final? Or maybe for some other reason.

Vote and reasons, please.

1996 for me. Enjoyed the whole season - 4th in the league, semi-finals of the FA cup and a comprehensive performance against Leeds to lift the cup.

The Arsenal away match was fantastic in that run. Home to Tranmere in 94 was also, but I enjoyed 96 that little bit more.

1994 for me.

beating Blues over 2 legs, including Frains comedy penalty miss.
The extraordinary away win at Sunderland with us playing classic Italian breakaway football.
A 1-0 win at the Arse which should have been about 3 or 4.
I was away skiing for the Qtr final at Spurs but heard the result on the World Service at 1.00am and woke my mates up jumping about the room.
The first leg at Tranmere when I was so annoyed I wrote a letter of complaint to Ron Atkinson.
That second leg against Tranmere, the game had everything other than a punch up and a few sendings off and my best ever day at Villa Park.
The trip to Wembley, fantastic absolutely fantastic.  You just knew we would win as soon as Dalian scored.

Obviously enjoyed both but probably enjoyed 96 more, even though we beat a far better side in 94, although its marginal.
Maybe its because we had an overall better season with a better team, and we won it in a decent kit, not the striped monstrosity against Man U.

Impossible to decide. 1994 for the Tranmere epic; 1996 for Savo's strike.

Against Leeds. It was just so comprehensive. I'm having a bet on us this season to lift a cup. FA Cup would be nice but I'll settle for the League Cup.

Singing the Dwight Yorke song against Leeds was nice as well.

FA Cup would work well with the 'Proud History...Bright Future' theme.

Loved both but I have gone for 96.  The whole season was fantastic it was also the first time I had been to Wembley.  It was how we won the cup that day as well out playing Leeds, winning it with style.

1994 because it was a struggle to get there - every round away and then having to come back against Tranmere, the penalties and then having to beat the league champions in the final. Did any of go to Wembley expecting to win? I hoped but didn't really believe so it was also unexpected.

In 1996 we were favourites and played as such. The way we got there was less traumatic (notwithstanding going two down at Highbury). The performance on the day was a bonus with Savo's goal being the highlight.

Since the Tottenham final in the 70's, the only one I have missed was the Man Utd one in 94. I was pig sick because I couldn't get a ticket. All the glory hunters came out of the cupboard for that one!
In 96 there were plenty of tickets available - I even managed to get 2 for my young daughters - (good swap eh?)
The Dwight Yorke song and Savo smashing the 30 yarder - happy days!

Tough, tough question.  I had to go for the 1994 one because we had some really tough draws along the way (Arsenal, Spurs and Sunderland all away) followed by the greatest game I've ever seen at Villa Park.  Final wasn't bad either!

Saying that, I think the 1996 team were better.  And my favourite memory of the day is sitting on the coach coming away from Wembley, looking to my right and noticing the Leeds team bus right next to us at the traffic lights.  Gary McAllister was about 5 feet away from me and they came in for some tremendous stick!

'96 because I was in Bosnia and was the only Villa fan in the bar amongst a mixed crowd including at least five Leeds fans. I bet at least a months wages on Villa winning and Savo scoring, I got very, very pissed that night.

I attended every round in '94 and have all the tickets framed with a photo of me and two mates holding the cup, taken at the awards night at the end of the season.

This was the first time I saw Villa win a major trophy and will always remain special.

I also had my pic taken with the trophy then. It was on display in the old club shop and you could just turn up with your cameras and snap away.

I was in Gornji Vakuf at the time but we did move up to Banja Luka to set up the HQ there towards the end of my tour.

Thanks.

We had to do regular runs to some of our remote radio rebroadcasting vehicles, passing through beautiful little villages where every third house had been razed to the ground because it belonged to a Bosnian Muslim family rather than a Serb family despite the fact that they had been good neighbours just a few months earlier. Evidence of ethnic cleansing contrasting with some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen, it fucked with my head rather!

94 because I was convinced we were going to win it after playing the Shit away. The walk up Wembley way convinced me we were going to win, and as has been said as soon as Dalian scored the victory seemed assured. First Wembley trip for 17 years. Brilliant.

96 I was in Oz and missed the whole thing.

Any cup final win is wonderful but of the two, I'd plump for 1994. It denied Manchester United the treble and we weren't given much of a chance of winning that match beforehand.

The 1996 final really was too easy and never in any doubt.

I was at every game of the '94 campaign - an odyssey that included trips to the Sty and Sunderland. Arse and Spurs were ironically the most difficult to get to even though I was living in London at the time - a late work finish and a bladder-bursting sprint up the Tottenham High Road to make kick-off is still a fresh memory.

And then Tranmere. Away: as bad as it got; home: as good as it's ever likely to be.

Not quite true. The final topped it. A truly great day.

So '94 for me.

94 for me, no question

Sunderland away was unbelievable (3rd round?). They were all over us, we had 4 shots and scored with every one. Atkinson scored 2, houghton and Richardson got the others. I knew we'd win the cup after that.

I blagged 2 tickets for Tramere away from Paul McGrath ( a long story, but the man is an absolute gentleman and a legend). He left 2 tickets for me at the players entrance and me and my brother-in-law ended up sitting with the players' wives at Prenton park. What a star!!

The home game against Tranmere was a perfect end to the old Holte. Silk scarves tied round the wrists, pitch invasion at the end. The atmosphere then reminded me of how I felt as a kid in the 70s, watching Villa. Unbelievable!

The final was fantastic, 12 years since we'd been to wembley and the Villa fans were incredible. When our first goal went in, I thought my heart was gonna jump out of my chest. Beating Man United was perfect. Difficult to explain how arrogant they were before the game ( I was living in Salford at the time).

I went to work in manchester city centre then next morning, totally hungover, with a Union Flag with "Salford Villa" stiched on it draped round my neck ( covered in beer stains from the journey back from Wembley). Still got the flag at home, waving a Salford Villa flag at man utd fans was like a red rag to a bull.

96 was brilliant but, for me, it didn't recapture the excitement of 94.

But surely that's why the '94 win was far more memorable. A far more inconsistent team than the heroes of '96, playing a Manchester United side that had lost...what, 3 times all season? We were favourites against Leeds two years later and duly annihalated them.

We were underdogs in '94 and regardless of how ManUre moaned about it being bottom of their priorities and that they were missing Schmeicheal and Cantona; the final of '94 completed a fantastic cup odyssey. Our first trophy in over a decade was so so sweet.

I'm quite certain that Cantona played in that game, they had a full strength team other than Sealy filling in for Schmeicel.

96 for me. For the 94 game I took my little sister and I spent most of the time worrying she'd get lost. Plus, she didnt really understand the importance of it all.

In 96 she was a bit older, but more importantly she was sat with my mum elsewhere in the stadium. I managed to blag a ticket at the last minute and was sat on my own. I say on my own, when obviously I mean with 30,000 other villains all singing Boom Boom Boom, Let Me Hear You Say Savo!! Savo!!

It was a demolition job and seeing Ian Taylor bang one in was the icing on the cake.

Blues away 93 was quality though I honestly thought I was going to get killed that night.

Spurs away 93 in the quarter final was superb though I also thought I was going to get killed outside the ground on that dodgy housing estate where they had had the riots a few years earlier.

Dalians goal at Wembley was the second finest moment in 20 years following the Villa but his late goal at home to Tranmere clinches top prize for me.

Singing Oasis 'roll with it' after the final whistle in 96 was also a very fine moment to spend with friends; pity we didn't have enough left to overcome the scousers a couple of weeks later at Old Trafford.

1996 because we behaved like we belonged. In 1994 we turned up like tourists enjoying a day out - and the way we still try to throw it back at Manchester United when they've won about 150 trophies since then is a bit embarassing.

My most two 'dangerous' moments as a football fan as well, probably.

The Spuds were not happy at all which took me by surprise, I was fully expecting it from the gypos.
