Title: Ice Hockey [NHL & Elite League]
Post by: UK Redsox on October 05, 2006, 12:11:49 PM
Any ice hockey fans out there ?

The season started yesterday with the Stanley Cup champions Carolina  losing at home to Buffalo.

It'll be interesting to see whether the Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin can repeat the success of his rookie season and whether Sydney Crosby lives up to the hype of being the "next Gretsky".

Back in the UK, the Cardiff Devils are still homeless and playing all their games on the road. The new arena is progressing slowly after the first part of the building that went up, promptly fell back down  ](*,)

UK Redsox - would you give hockey much of a future in the States?  Attendances at the games are dwindling, TV audiences are dreadful.........

I barely watched any games during the regualar season, last year -  and for the first time since I've been here I didn't even watch the Stanley Cup.

For me its a sport that you either have to watch in the arena or just catch the highlights. Trying to follow the puck on TV for a whole game does my head in.

We went on Saturday and it was ace !!
Quite impressed with the arena and was even a couple of 'dust-ups' to keep the neutrals entertained.

It looked like the refs were told to clamp down on any potential violence for the British audience.

I thought that the refs were very quick to step in between potential fighters. More so than in Elite League games and certainly more so than in the NHL games I've seen on TV.

In the Elite League I believe that the officials are instructed not to intervene until either the players fighting fall over or look like they're knackered.

There was one proper stand-up one-on-one punch up in the Sunday game.

C5 should have a couple of games a week once the baseball season is over. Sky have one Elite League game per week

However, if you need a major NHL fix then NASN (part of the Setanta package) is the place to be. 200 plus games per season.

I don't tend to watch much hockey on TV. The puck just doesn't show up well enough. However, the word from my mates Stateside is that hockey in HD is superb. Trouble is that I don't think that NASN have any plans to go HD.

What do you think of "The Great One" as a Head Coach ?

I suspect that he'll be like many great players in other sports in that he'll never be able to see why his players can't do the things he could (see Ted Williams as an example).

Talking of bad luck at ice hockey.... a friend of mine goes to Streatham when Dulwich Hamlet aren't playing. He sits behind the goal.

One evening the puck soars over the protective barrier and catches him right in the middle of his forehead, lays his skin open to the bone.

He still has a jagged scar there. Everyone refers to him as `the boy wizard'

Whilst the rest of you were suffering the England game, I was at "The Big Blue Tent" down in Cardiff Bay watching the mighty Cardiff Devils win their eleventh game in a row to storm to the top of the Elite League.

The Devils are playing a top of the table clash away against the Coventry Blaze on Sat 24th Nov. So, if you want to see Wales'** finest in action, the Coventry Skydome is the place to be.

Even da Beeb (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/ice_hockey/7100586.stm) have the story

The Toronto Maple Leafs v The Ottawa Senators at the Air Canada Centre, was the only game i have ever been to, so therefore i follow the Leafs results.

For those that like their ice hockey and I'm not sure if it's been shown in the UK, but tomorrow the Pittsburgh Penguins will play the Buffalo Sabres in an outdoor game at the American Football stadium in Buffalo - a crowd of 70,000 will be in attendance.  Given that it's in Buffalo and it it's January, it will be cold and probably very windy.

Its all going tits-up at the Cardiff Devils.

Major injury/suspension problems and no money to bring in quality replacement players. Both netminders are now injured, so they're having to drag in unproven backups from other clubs.

Add to this a dispute with the rink management and Cardiff Council over excessive charges, the withdraw of promised sponsorship and general chaos.

Looks like you might not have to put up with my Elite League babbling for much longer.

Ex Solihull Barons Fan here, although I've not been down for many years.  I quit after the MD decided a player who can't follow club rules was more important than a 10 year+ season ticket holder.

Ticketmaster or NHL.com are probably as cheap as you're going to get, short of going to the rink in person.

Attending a NHL game won't be cheap. Remember the arenas are fairly small.

I'm currently looking at going over in early April for a few games and am looking at $150 per ticket on average.

It depends on where you are watching a game. Out here in the desert the Coyotes are not really a big draw, they play second fiddle to the Suns(NBA) and Cardinals(NFL) so I have managed to get tickets for less than half the face value both from the Coyotes e-mailing me special deals or through e-bay.
The Coyotes are a good young team who are riding a five game win streak so maybe I will find getting tickets more difficult as more people jump on the bandwagon.

I can't believe how much the NHL has changed in 10 years.

as much as i love hockey - it looks like MISL and Arena (american) football now.....but there are still blokes like Ilya Kovalchuk on crap teams who juts want to score for themselves.....

This is what Bettman and unchecked expansion get you - a watered down and diluted product to appeal to Southerners and Disney fans.

I have to watch Slapshot every so often to remember what is used to be like - man do i miss minor league roadtrips in the old NAHL and AHL.

The game doesn't need anymore pampered primma donnas to be used as marketing tools to get the casual fan to switch over from basketball and NFL.

Neither Gretzky, Mario, Lindros or Crosby could or will make a difference other than to further alienate the established fan base.

Yet another reason to hate Tiger Woods:

"The PGA official thought he had the perfect softball question to throw at Tiger Woods to kick off a media teleconference with the world's No. 1-ranked player yesterday.

"Detroit or Pittsburgh?" Julius Mason asked of Woods during a session to promote the 90th PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

"I don't really care," Woods replied. "I don't think anybody really watches hockey any more, do they?""

How about a former Canadian team The Winnipeg Jets now known as the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coached by The Great One - Wayne Gretzky.

He's the only ice hockey player I have heard of! But I don't really agree with relocation of franchises so they're out sorry! Quite like the name Coyotes though.... do they have a local derby against the Phoenix Roadrunners?

You have got to love the support the Oilers get. During the playoffs a couple of years ago Rexall Place was really rocking. They had fantastic home support and it really came across on the tv coverage.
It wasn't the artificial pumped in crap they try and pass off for atmosphere at a lot of arenas out here.

Great victory over a very good Sharks team last night.
We are a pretty good team this year with the pick up of Olli Jokinen and with Ilya Bryzgalov between the pipes most nights we have a chance of the playoffs this year.

I played hockey my whole life. Since 5 years old, All through High School, and still play in  mens league now.

I NEVER watch it on TV.

I have a team in my town, and I don't even got to watch.

I think there are more than enough people that follow the 85 game season.

I am just not one of them...

I think the problem is that it is also Football season/ Basketball season right now, and in the spring as Hockey is ending, it is Baseball season.

It also hasn't been on regular TV since the strike.

There are just too many sports on over here for me to get into another one.

The NHL needs to stop chasing the TV money and TV markets and accept that it has a small hardcore fan base. They missed a golden opportunity to improve the game by not making the ice surfaces international size with all of the brand new arenas they now have. The players are now too big for the small 200 X 85.

Get rid of the gimmicks (4 on 4 OT, shootouts) and lose the following teams and let them play in the CHL or the ECHL.

Carolina
Tampa Bay
Atlanta
Florida
Washington
Columbus
Nashville
Colorado
San Jose
Anaheim
Phoenix
LA
Dallas

I went to 1 game back in Jan 2007, Washington Capitals v Florida Panthers.
It had everything in it, a good fist fight in the first 5 minutes (and several later on) a shootout and OT.

I couldn't believe the seat prices mind, they were season tickets, held by a friends law firm, incredible per match price in excess of $250 a game!

The plus side was beer & good food in your seat and the fact 2 Brits attracted a lot of attention as we seemed to be the only ones egging on the fighters in punch ups!

It's not an event I'd go to again, just a tick in the box kind of thing NHL, done.

Whilst I will agree that some of those cities might not be the best for hockey(including my own team the Coyotes) I will tell you as a former season ticket holder that San Jose is a great hockey city.
It is the only game in town and the team has always been very well supported even through a lot of lean years and everything else that the Bay Area has to offer.

Haven't been to ice hockey for years. I used to in the mid 90s occasionally go  to see Manchester Phoenix at the MEN Arena. At the time they were regularly pulling in crowds in excess of 5000.

It was generally good entertainment and I saw one or two cracking matches. However, as a spectator if ultimately lacked the all-consuming 'life-style' that is football and I can't say I shed any tears when Phoenix went bust.

D&D, ice hockey has a whole thread of its own if you're interested.

I used to be a regular at Cardiff Devils games but the travelling got too much for me (especially the post-Villa game dash to Cardiff for a 7pm face-off).

I now mainly just go to games when Cardiff are playing in Coventry after a Villa home game.

Ice Hockey in the UK is great entertainment. You just need to recognise that its not a very high standard (although I understand that the Devils have just signed an ex-NHL player).

PS - could a MOD please merge this thread with the main NHL/Elite League one. Thanks

I was surprised at the pace of the game, they really move some don't they!

I can't deny that for entertainment value it was a good evening, I was just expecting some high scoring game with lots of goals and fights (like it used to be when I played on the Megadrive) but it was a 1-1 draw last night. That said I am planning to go again soon when England play Jamaica in a friendly at the coventry skydome.

Just watched the last 5 minutes or so of the Montreal @ Boston game.

After a string of penalties at 17:11 in the third, it took the poor rink announcer over a minute to read them all out. Once that power play ended, all hell broke loose. I don't think that the guy even tried reading out those penalties.

The crowd and commentators were loving every minute of the game, fights and all.

Boston were excellent last night, scoring twice in the first 63 seconds and chasing Boucher from the game with two more in the second period.

They were 4-1 up with 3 minutes to play when I left for the baseball. Therefore, I missed them scoring on a power play for the first time in 30+ tries.

The seat was near the back but was at centre ice. Overall a great view and a great night out

I'll be Stateside whilst the finals are on. Unfortunately I won't be in Boston this time

I didn't think that they were going to resurrect the "Jets" name for this team.

Did you hear Bettman's dig at the Winnipeg fans ?

Even before the team has arrived, the Commish is warning fans that if they don't pack the arena, the team may move again

Oh, and of course ......... Go Bruins (although they'll have to bounce back from last night's tough loss)

Went to see the unimpressive Chicago Blackhawks struggle to defeat the returning Winnipeg Jets almost two weeks ago and then Montreal Canadiens host and lose to Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Despite the 5-4 OT scoreline, was MASSIVELY disappointed, mainly because both sets of fans used the spectacularly uninspiring "GO [insert abbreviated team name here] GO" to cheer on their team and for the most part, the "Habs" fans only remembered to make some noise when the scoreboard helpfully reminded them to do so, in both English and French.

I don't think English 'soccer' fans are anywhere near as passionate as Sky would like to have us believe, but people attending North American sporting events leave a LOT to be desired.

After scraping into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the West, they then knocked out the 1 seeded Canucks, the 2 seeded Blues and then the 3 seeded Coyotes.

The Kings goalie is from about 25 minutes north of where I live.  My high school team (I played hockey until I was about 17) played his school team (He obviously wasn't there yet)*.

If the Rangers don't make it, I am all for the Kings.  As a kid I used to go see the New Haven Nighthawks on Friday nights with my dad (former Kings minor league/farm team).

One notable graduate from my high school was Chris Drury (left the year before I got there), won the state championship in HS (but our team won every year), an olympic medal, a stanley cup, a rookie of the year trophy, a little world series title (as a kid), and in the twilight of his career he went on to captain his childhood team, the New York Rangers.  (his dad Ted was also my first hockey coach when I was like 9)

Just been to see "Stanley" at the Hockey HOF here in Toronto.

As usual, most visitors were ignoring the original cup, which is kept in a small side vault, in favour of being photographed with the display replica.

This is the second time that I've been round the HOF and Museum and it is pretty underwhelming when compared to Cooperstown.

The only people that can make a difference our fans by not going. but who is going to do that? Most of the hockey tickets in Vancouver are paid for by corporations. Yep, I read that article as well Paul (Grantland is a great site).

As for the coming season, I must admit that my interest in hockey has dropped in recent years. I no longer make the 100 mile round trip to watch the Cardiff Devils play and the NHL is now only available on a non-HD channel that requires an extra subscription.

We do however get AHL games in HD as part of the standard ESPN add-on to Sky

You really need to have HD if you are like anything like me and can't really see the puck. The regular stations pick up a lot of hocky games though and doesn't seem to be any need to pay for one. Each team plays pretty much every other day.

I usually wait for the playoffs before I entertain a game or two, actually I didn't bother watching last year. It's just not the same without a good riot ;)

I have to be honest, with the kids getting older I don't watch the Rangers as much as I used to.  One thing we have here with MSG Network is called The Rangers in 60, which is essentially a full game squashed into 1 hour.

They use pretty much all of the significant plays (in full between the whistles).  Goals, penalties, great shots, great defending, and anything else you would ever want to see.  You skip the intermissions, and the time off between bigger plays.  They use the original annoucning, which can get confusing because you miss parts of the discussion, but you can still follow the play by play.

It is kind of cheating, but whatever...

Some of my early posts to this thread referred to the Cardiff Devils' problems moving into their temporary rink.

Well, just last month they finally moved out of the temporary rink ("The Big Blue Tent") and into their new permanent home, "Ice Arena Wales"

I was at the first game and the playoff game the next weekend.

I'll try to go down a bit more often next season but its close to a 100 mile round trip for each home game

Cracking game at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn last night. My first NHL game didn't disappoint with the Islanders beating the Lightening 5-2. They now have a great chance of making the playoffs along with the rags (Rangers).

So, did Sydney Crosby become the next Gretsky or did he go down because of all those sex assault charges?

Peter - I have no idea what you are talking about.  Given that I live in the same city where Crosby plays, I may be a little biased, but I do see more of him than most the country and I would say once all is said and done, he will be top 3 of all-time.

I know nothing about ice hockey, I've watched it a few times but always found it exceptionally hard to follow the puck - especially when there's goalmouth action. However, I watched the Red Army documentary about the Soviet teams of the 70s & 80s on Netflix the other night and it was fascinating. Is there any particular reason you haven't considered any of these players ?

Afternoon sports fans.
The Crofts clan are in New York for Christmas and I quite fancy a family trip to MSG to see the Rangers play Toronto on 23 December.
I am aware that NHL tickets are in the 'lumpy' category and add in the fact this is New York and I'm looking at the thin end of $700 plus fees for a family of 4 without so much as a freezing cold tasteless beer served in my seat or a wiener in a stale bun.

Not having been to an NHL game since about 2004 (Caps v Panthers) should I.......

a: bite the bullet you can't buy tickets on the day and they don't reduce the price anyhow.

b: wait and buy on the door at a greatly reduced price.

c: use this amazing website where fans resell unwanted tickets at less than face value.

Thanks

Is going to see the NY Islanders an option?  I'd guess the Rangers sell-out most matches well in advance but the Islanders would be less expensive and not all that hard to get too now they're in Brooklyn.  What's the cheap seats site? Stub Hub or Seat Geek.

That's not a bad shout, NHL seat exchange has tickets starting at $47 for the Islanders game v Winnipeg on 23 December, quite honestly I don't care if the Winnipeg Wankeroos & the Brooklyn Islanders both suck ass big time, it's the occasion and all that.  The Caps game I went to had it all and they sucked ass, we had a full on fist fight on the ice after 5 minutes and the game ended in a shoot out 1 on 1 whatever that's called, marvellous. Cheers for the suggestion I'd forgotten all about the Islanders and wasn't prepared to go to New Joyzee for the Devils.

We went to Islanders v Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, Islanders won 5-2 in quite an entertaining game, Jets having by far more shots on goal and far more puck possession but failing to capitalise, sound familiar?

Barzal scored his first hat trick & Jaro Halak saved the Islanders on several occasions between the sticks.

First period was over an hour, stop start but the next 2 periods flowed end to end and was really entertaining, could I watch it every week? Not a chance.

I don’t know anything about the teams playing but my friend would like to go to Madison Square Garden in NYC so would one of those be better than the Toronto games?

This year I got introduced to ice hockey through a Swedish client. His team is Lulea and to my surprise, I've quite enjoyed watching the games with him, almost as much as the beer and food he provides. What amazes me is the speed and skill level, what confuses me are the rules. Just when I think I understand something will happen and I'm completely lost. Still, I now know a least three rude Swedish words.

Obviously it's no where near the NHL standard but I do like the idea of it being a national sport where fans support their local, small town teams even if the fans look like they were dressed from the same stores Watford fans shop at. The disco lights before the game is something I hope I never see at Villa Park.

Haha.  See, last I looked they needed to win the remaining 3 games.  Ah well.

Montreal Canadiens become first Canadia(e)n team in Stanley Cup finals since 2007. Last Canadian winners  were them in 1993.

If the Rangers win their Game 7, that'll be a classic old-school Original Six matchup

It's the Islanders rather than the Rangers. Still old school but not old, old school.

It's been such a long time since I watched any NHL.

Nice to see the Sabres are doing ok as they seem to have been in the doldrums for quite a long time.

I work with 3 Canadian chaps who are big hockey fans. Two Leafs and a Canadien. It can get quite heated at times. Haha.

I'm a Red Wings man myself, but we've been pretty rubbish of late. I think back to 2001/2002 when I was studying abroad in Michigan and spent so much time in Detroit. That was a hell of a team, and I still have my Yzerman and Lidström jerseys.
