UK Redsox - would you give hockey much of a future in the States? Attendances at the games are dwindling, TV audiences are dreadful.........
I barely watched any games during the regualar season, last year - and for the first time since I've been here I didn't even watch the Stanley Cup.
It'll be interesting to see whether the Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin can repeat the success of his rookie season
Did anyone else go to the LA Kings v Anaheim Ducks games at the Dome this weekend ?
It looked like the refs were told to clamp down on any potential violence for the British audience.
yes I am a Buffalo fan so this is good news. Anyone know if there is a programme on Sky/C4/Channel 5 at 3.30 in the morning like before?
Let's go Buffalo...
Another tough season ahead for my Phoenix Coyotes but after being a Villa fan for over 30years I think I will be able to cope.
Calgary Flames.
Maple Leafs.
Quote from: "Legion"Calgary Flames.
We went to see the Flames play Vacnouver at The Saddle Dome when we were skiing in Banff last January.
They came from 2-1 down to win 4-2.
And I lovesd every minute of it \:D/

You lucky git. I went there three years ago and they were away. I went back two years ago and all the players were on strike.

suck.
Running joke in the rest of Canada.

What do you think of "The Great One" as a Head Coach ?
I suspect that he'll be like many great players in other sports in that he'll never be able to see why his players can't do the things he could (see Ted Williams as an example).
He seems to be pretty good coach and obviously he gets the respect of the players but it is not a hockey town,so I think he may be fighting a losing battle.

Maybe it's you? I've heard about your bad luck.

5.30pm As Live Pittsburgh vs Buffalo - NHL
The NHL Winter Classic takes place at the Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, NY - the League's first regular-season outdoor game in the United States.
How are the Dallas Stars doing UKR? Are they expected to challenge this year?
Well the Penguins won the game after a shoot-out (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/flash/zoomGallery?section=gen&photoGalleryId=3176292). Great stuff played in blowing snow in front of 73,000 fans.

We are hoping to get tickets for a game in Denver at the beginning of January.
Any of our American contingent have any suggestions for obtaining tickets ?
Cheers!

My mate checked Ticketmaster but said the prices were extortionate.
We'll try the other link.
Not been near a rink since, not there is anything in Birmingham anyway.

Ticketmaster or NHL.com are probably as cheap as you're going to get, short of going to the rink in person.
Attending a NHL game won't be cheap. Remember the arenas are fairly small.
I'm currently looking at going over in early April for a few games and am looking at $150 per ticket on average.
Alexander the Great (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3190712) signs the NHL's first $100m deal
The future of the NHL is looking bright with Alex and "Sid the Kid"
A bit harsh on Sid the Kid. What's he done wrong apart from be the best thing to happen to Ice Hockey in a long time?
Congratulations to the Detroit Red Wings.
and regardless of who you supported, don't you just love the playoff beards?

Coventry's not that far away.
The game off ice hockey is ok, but I've noone to support. Any ideas? I think I will pick a Canadian team, but which one?

How about a former Canadian team The Winnipeg Jets now known as the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coached by The Great One - Wayne Gretzky.

I'd recommend the Toronto Maple Leafs - great tradition and history

I know nothing about ice hockey but have a friend who lives in Edmonton now.
Go Oilers!

For me its a sport that you either have to watch in the arena or just catch the highlights. Trying to follow the puck on TV for a whole game does my head in.

The NHL needs to stop chasing the TV money and TV markets and accept that it has a small hardcore fan base. They missed a golden opportunity to improve the game by not making the ice surfaces international size with all of the brand new arenas they now have. The players are now too big for the small 200 X 85.
Get rid of the gimmicks (4 on 4 OT, shootouts) and lose the following teams and let them play in the CHL or the ECHL.
Carolina
Tampa Bay
Atlanta
Florida
Washington
Columbus
Nashville
Colorado
San Jose
Anaheim
Phoenix
LA
Dallas

Quote from: "damon green"A friend of mine is a big Streatham Redskins fan. He is easily the strangest person I know
Does he wear fancy dress to weddings, and stuff like that?
my friend goes all the time to the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre to watch the local team and often follows them to away games. He loves it.
sadly my knowledge of it is confined to NHL 1993 on the megadrive!
D&D, ice hockey has a whole thread of its own if you're interested.
I used to be a regular at Cardiff Devils games but the travelling got too much for me (especially the post-Villa game dash to Cardiff for a 7pm face-off).
I now mainly just go to games when Cardiff are playing in Coventry after a Villa home game.
Ice Hockey in the UK is great entertainment. You just need to recognise that its not a very high standard (although I understand that the Devils have just signed an ex-NHL player).
PS - could a MOD please merge this thread with the main NHL/Elite League one. Thanks
Yay!!!! Superbowl Champions and Stanley Cup Champions in the same year - it's a good time to be in Pitt.

So, how's yer baseball team doing ?
Does Jeremy Roenick still play?
He was my main man on NHL when I played it on the Megadrive / Playstation,.

Grats to my Hawks for ending 49 years of frustration!!! I'm hoping Toews stays in a Hawks sweater for a long time. He's a class act!
Now if only my Cubbies can get a title I will have seen every Chicago team claim a championship title.
Did anybody see the brawl between Coventry and Nottingham last week? It made it onto Canadian TV as the sports channels were loving the Brummy accent and apparently the brawl was started by a Canadian.
I thought that the fights in the Penguins v Islanders game were worse than those in the Boston v Montreal debacle.
Boston were excellent last night, scoring twice in the first 63 seconds and chasing Boucher from the game with two more in the second period.
They were 4-1 up with 3 minutes to play when I left for the baseball. Therefore, I missed them scoring on a power play for the first time in 30+ tries.
The seat was near the back but was at centre ice. Overall a great view and a great night out
The Canucks look like they will get through, still think it is Boston's year
Welcome back to the NHL to the Winnipeg Jets.
Let's hope that Bettman retires soon and stops trying to force the NHL into weak markets in the south and west.
Go Bruins!
Welcome back to the NHL to the Winnipeg Jets.
Welcome back to the NHL to the Winnipeg Jets.
At least it isn't my Phoenix Coyotes moving there.
The Jets first season could be a long one with all the traveling down to the South East!
It'll be interesting to see how Sid does when he takes his first big hit (if anyone dares to lay one on him)
Some one high up in the NHL wants Ottawa to win after looking at their goal last night, I think the Villa should sign him up.
I know its a few days late but congrats to the LA Kings on their first Stanley Cup.
The Penguins have been quoted as favourites for next year!

Anyone have any thoughts about this season?
Anyone have any thoughts about anything at all?
I read this the other day, and thought it was great. From Grantland. It's about players going to/staying in Russia, and how hard the NHL transition is for young players, but from a personal standpoint, not a physical/game standpoint

I say with a little pride that I am glad I don't know much about Hockey, it is on for far too long and is only interesting in the play offs.
Been following the coverage on Premier Sports via Virgin. Great coverage and some great games. Rekindled the love of the sport I had years ago.

Penguins win!!!! Stanley Cup is coming back to Pittsburgh. I hope to make it to the parade!
They opened the "Dick's Sporting Goods" stores in the area last night at midnight to begin selling all the merchandise :)
The closest ones to downtown that I know are at Robinson(near the airport) and Homestead (East of the city). They opened the "Dick's Sporting Goods" stores in the area last night at midnight to begin selling all the merchandise :)
Is the Dick's down by the Allegheny still open?

Any ice hockey fans out there ?
The season started yesterday with the Stanley Cup champions Carolina losing at home to Buffalo.
It'll be interesting to see whether the Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin can repeat the success of his rookie season and whether Sydney Crosby lives up to the hype of being the "next Gretsky".
Back in the UK, the Cardiff Devils are still homeless and playing all their games on the road. The new arena is progressing slowly after the first part of the building that went up, promptly fell back down ](*,)
I think that Peter might have been going for a Cosby/Crosby joke
Movin' on.......
I don't see Crosby cracking the top five, let alone the top three
Which of these do you have him above USAV ?
The Great One
Orr
Gordie
Mario
Rocket
The bracket is set:
East- Atlantic
Canadiens v Rangers
Senators v Bruins
East- Metropolitan
Capitals v Maple Leafs
Penguins v Blue Jackets
West- Central
Blackhawks v Predators
Wild v Blues
West- Pacific
Ducks v Flames
Oilers v Sharks
My predictions, whoever wins out of Capitals and Penguins to win the cup. All Canadian teams to go out first round. Sharks or Blackhawks from the West.
Crosby top 5 player now? (http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/19611090/2017-stanley-cup-finals-sidney-crosby-best-all) Changed your mind UKRedsox?
Afternoon sports fans.
The Crofts clan are in New York for Christmas and I quite fancy a family trip to MSG to see the Rangers play Toronto on 23 December.

Is going to see the NY Islanders an option? I'd guess the Rangers sell-out most matches well in advance but the Islanders would be less expensive and not all that hard to get too now they're in Brooklyn. What's the cheap seats site? Stub Hub or Seat Geek.
