Title: Joao Gomes

£35m. Good player and good fee.

The patrons of Molineux Mix seem devestated about how little we're paying for him, which is always a good sign.

Feels like a chunky fee to me when we have such little financial headroom.

Still leaves us with a Tielemans-sized hole for progressive passing.

But I did think he looked good against us last season.

Quality player, I've wanted us to sign him for years (which worries me now!) so delighted. Should be capable of kicking on a long way under Emerys guidance.

Midfield is going to have a lot of legs with this lad and Manzambi in there.

Great fee given what ofher clubs have spent. Release clause maybe?

Four years younger than Tielemans. I think this is a cracking signing, if it happens.

Seems like a reasonable fee given some of the prices for midfielders this summer.

Yeah, quality bit of squad refreshing and trimming the wage bill there.

This is a really smart signing particularly at the price.
Our midfield has been key to our success but sometimes seems to lack the legs against more physical sides.
I can’t see that been a problem next season.

The profile of player we're getting makes me think we will offer a lot more than aiming to play through the lines next season.

I think so too. Away from home that could be massive. 5-10 yards deeper, but a midfield with the legs to run it.

Wonder if the fee is dictated by a release clause?

Is he the Tielemans replacement? If so, paying the same money we got and replacing him with someone much younger seems decent to me.

Yeah, he's an 8, similar to Youri, arguably better in a piss show of team.

Still not sure if he’s a Tielemans replacement or not, but the club are working quickly to fill in the holes and weaknesses from last season.

This looks like excellent business from the club.

Gomes is nicknamed "Pitbull" When we played them at VP last season I noticed his aggression in the tackle. He's only 25 as well, which helps to lower the age profile. This will give more bite to our midfield.

I was very impressed with a blonde haired guy in the Wolves centre midfield when he played in their 1-0 defeat at Villa Park last season. I couldn't be arsed to find out his name at the time. Was that by chance Gomes?

Based on those clips, he’s got a Rogers like knack of taking on players. Quick, explosive first couple of steps that allows him to take the ball into space.

Title: Re: Joao Gomes
Post by: Smithy on July 16, 2026, 12:08:40 PM
I have to admit to knowing very little about him, apart from cursing him when he scored against us.  I couldn't even tell you what sort of midfielder he's supposed to be?  Is he a potential partner for Kamara at the base of midfield? Or someone to play further forward in Youri's role?  Or could he be a more defensive-minded left/right sided midfielder like McGinn?  Maybe he can do all of the above?

I'm always happy to see technically competent midfielders join our ranks, and his age is a bonus.  If we add him and Manazambi, that'll do wonders for the age profile of our side, but I'm not sure it makes our first team "stronger" to add those two while losing Youri and Onana? (only because I don't know the new two as well as Youri and Onana, that's not a judgement on their replacements, it's a question)
Title: Re: Joao Gomes

I think he can do all of the above, but looking at the stats he's a better destroyer and ball carrier than line-breaking passer.  Good on the ball and retaining possession though.

So we have gone from the high of Manzambi, to the low of Tielemans/Digne to the high of Gomez/Paulinha all in the space of about 7 days.

Of I forgot the incredible low of Dobbin.

I'm the same, but I know very little about most other teams players, even some in the current England squad. Watching Gomes showreel on Youtube, I could be wrong, but I'm guessing he is the Youri replacement. He looks like an excellent tackler/breaks up play, like Kamara, can run with it barging players off, has an eye for a killer forward pass, and occasionally scores. He's definitely more forward thinking than Kamara.

We've signed a few Brazilians over the last few years and none have really had that Brazilian flair you'd expect coming from the home of sexy football. Gomes has it and with the passion and drive you'd more associate with Argentina (too soon?). I think he's a cracking player and one we most certainly need to maintain having one of the best midfields in the league.

I'm not going to get too excited until he's put pen to paper with Unai sitting next to him. We really need this one to land.
