Title: A tale of two summers
Post by: andyh on May 22, 2026, 11:55:24 AM
I can’t quite believe the feeling of going into this summer break compared with 12 months ago.

We went into last summer pretty despondent after blowing CL in the final game of the season. Martinez was leaving, JJ was going to be sacrificed, every player had a price on their head and we knew we had little or no money that we were permitted to spend to improve the squad.
Despite a very decent season if did feel a bit gloomy after the last game.

Fast forward 12 months and look at what we have in front of us.

CL qualification earned twice over !!!!!!!!
No need to sacrifice quality players to balance the books or satisfy ridiculous accounting rules.
A new head of recruitment who will hopefully show his worth in the coming months.
Massive redevelopment of the stadium taking shape
A kit kit with hopefully a high profile shirt sponsor
An abundance of Villa players at the WC.

But mostly, a summer of grinning like a cat that’s got the cream because we have a trophy, a manager who is a genius, owners who love the club and a recognition that Aston Villa really are back.

Rather like the Fulham play-off final, the game at Old Trafford will go down in Villa history as a good one to have lost.

I'm now convinced we lost that one deliberately.
