What: UEFA Europa League Quarter Final First Leg
When: Thursday 9 April. Kick Off 20:00 BST, 21:00 CET
Where: Renato Dall'Ara Stadium, Centro tecnico Niccolò Galli, Bologna
So onto our next match that also happens to be our next European match.
Bologna have so far have had a very mixed season in Serie A. Played 30 won12 and lost12 however they have been much better in the Europa League, particularly during their impressive win against Roma, so they will present a significant challenge for us.
-
Draw, 1-1.

We’re back!

Bologna 1 Astonishing Villa 2

Longest lead-in to a match thread ever? In the word of the departed Bad English, "Tsk!".

Ffs, we don't have a match for ten days, there is no need for this football nonsense clogging up the forum. Some of us are trying to discuss musical theatre.

Why not combine the two? Did you know that the wonderful terrace anthem You'll Never Walk Alone is a show tune from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel?
-
Sadly, I did.

Sadly, I did.
Of course, I think nearly everyone does.

I never understood why Liverpool adopted their anthem from that film. What’s the link? The film was from 1956 when they were firmly entrenched in the 2nd division I think?

Win the game Villa, and no injuries.

Away tickets issued apparently. Name and Date of Birth is on the ticket for ID matching purposes...

To add to what DW was saying, Gerry Marsden used to go to the local cinema when he wasn't playing/rehearsing, but only to watch the kids' cartoons which he loved.
On one occasion, he went to sleep after the cartoons and woke up during the main film which that day was 'Carousel', just as YNWA was being sung. He was really impressed with the song and wanted to do a version by him and the Pacemakers. He struggled against the resistance to his idea but eventually he delivered, and it became a big hit. It was played, like all other top ten hits, before games at Anfield and subsequently became the club's anthem.

I should have known about the Gerry & the Pace Makers link, I probably did but forgot. I think that their Ferry Across the Mersey would have made for a better and more appropriate anthem. Right, that’s enough about them lot for now.

Maybe this one?
-
2-1 Villa win.
-
Bologna get a nice warm up game tomorrow in the league.
-
Yep, they play Vardy's Cremonese and then Lecce in the League.
Maybe we should have hoped Roma got through, they're away to Inter.

With McGinn n Youri back we will piss this.

If all our travelling brethren could remember that ragù bolognese is a meat, rather than a tomato-based sauce, that'd save a whole bucket load of cringe back here at Glynn's Trattoria & Shaved Meat Parlour, Codsall. We live and die on authenticity.

I had apple on a pizza in Italy. They’re not as fussy as they’d have you believe.

Melon and ham is a classic as well. The hypocritical freaks.
(I Hate pineapple on pizza - when it's a tomato pizza. Name one other time you'd have tomato and pineapple, it's ungodly. But pineapple with prosciutto and maybe smoked cheese? focking lovely.)

Bologna playing today. A few injuries to key players would be useful.

Not sure at all about Bailey away from home. Not sure about him at Villa Park either but that's besides the point. Rogers to the left, McGinn right Tielemans at 10 and Luiz into midfield. Bit more secure but still very strong.
Tammy might be in the reckoning for a start after the training trip, hopefully bit more in tune with his teammates. Ollie to start at Forest on Sunday. Emerys going to rotate a bit I reckon. Digne/Maatsen. Lindelof/Konsa, Tammy/Ollie. Luiz/Barkley

That's never worked out well for us and in any case when they walk out in front of my eyes on Thursday I want see their best XI. :)
-
Who are their star players? I'm only afraid of Beppe Signori.

I often make a pear and Gorgonzola pizza with walnuts. A mint pesto rather than tomato sauce is the way to go.

Think Castro is dangerous and Englishman Rowe seems to be doing well.

That sounds awesome!

Surely somewhere will sell a traditional full English breakfast .
-
Squeaked past lowly Cremonese today, albeit away.
Rowe scored again, so maybe he's their danger man.
I'm struggling to take them that seriously, actually. They were so ineffective in the three ties we've had with them these past few years. No doubt Unai has everyone on their toes, though.
-
Only two isnt it?
-
When we played them in the champions league I think their big danger man was Dan Ndoye who then went to Forest.
I went to the group fixture against them earlier this season and I couldn’t tell you a single thing about them or what happened in the game.
-
Only two isnt it?
Well I certainly can't remember a third.
-
And they've both been within the last 18 months.
-
Bologna haven't lost a game in the Europa League, since we beat them. Something like an 11 game run.
-
Ah my bad, I thought we played them home and away last year, but am confusing them with Bruges.
-
sorry to ask .. happy easter monday BTW
why do we have Bailey in the Euro squad and not Barkley?
-
Because Barkley was injured the two times we could have selected him. He was partially in as an injury replacement for Mings but that was temporary until Mings was fit.

Wouldn't mind a draw and keep up our 100% home record against them.

I'd prefer they suffer a 5-0 defeat but each to their own. ;)

Still think an inured Barkley is better than a fit Bailey. Thanks

Maybe, but they were all just replacing someone in a similar role who was leaving the squad.
Tammy = Malen
DL = Kamara
Bailey = Guessand
Including Barkley over Bailey leaves the squad a bit too light on attackers.

Bologna is a great city to visit. A few quick recommendations.
For a really nice lunch of fresh fish, and not expensive, try Banco 32, in the Mercato delle Erbe.
Osteria del Sole, in the Quadilatero, is an old and basic wine tavern, the wine is lovely and also cheap. Food is not served here, but they are happy for you to take in your own food to eat.
Osteria dell'Orsa, on Via Mentana, is an old fashioned casual tavern, serving hearty food and carafes of wine, very inexpensive.
Just a few metres from the football ground is the start of the world's longest portico, consisting of 666 arches, with dozens of frescoes lining the way up to the Basilica Santuario della Madonna di San Luca. There are lovely views to be had over the city and the countryside from the top, and over the football ground as you walk up.
To those who are going, have a great trip.

We've done the portico di san Luca walk this morning - the views are indeed spectacular - and we managed to get into the stadium after for a nosey around. Followed all this by lunch in the Mercato della Erbe (we are in an Airbnb on Via San Felice) but regrettably not the fish place - perhaps give that a go later this week. It is indeed a fab city. Let's hope the result caps off a cracking week.
-
Talking to my Italian brother in law who say Bologna will throw the kitchen sin at us on Thursday as they are 8th in the table and this is all they have left. Obvious I suppose. Hopefully we are too good for them
-
Yep I’m expecting a fairly lively atmosphere and cannot wait to be there flights and trains permitting.

Footballs back !!!!!!!!!!!!
3-1 Villa.

We are so back!

Bologna last two games lose 2-0 to lazio, and then beat cremonese 2-1

The Warehouse isn't open for the game tomorrow.
Seems insane to me that the club isn't willing to open it for QF of a European game...

Seems like a missed opportunity, bit bizarre in terms of decision making.

Maybe because there is loads of work going on and it wouldn't be safe to do so.

Good point
-
Yeah, the place is a building site due to the North Stand works spilling. They've a week to tidy-up a bit for the home leg.
-
Along with the sweet relief of football coming back after another interminable International break (last weekend doesn't count) we also have the return of the anxious anticipation, the hope, the worry and all round stress of watching us play football. And we wouldn't change it for anything, perhaps apart from a stonking win in Italy rendering the game next Thursday as academic as it can be.
It would be nice but it's unlikely, I'm still going for a win though.
0-1

Let's hope we're not saying that after tomorrow night's game.
-
Still no pre match presser ?!
-
Gentle reminder that we haven't been in the quarter finals of this competition for nearly 30 years. Remember it well as a starry eyed young'un. Pressing for the third and decisive goal against Christian Vieri's Atletico. I'm going to try and savour this and frame it as hopefully revenge for that heartbroken young kid.
Worth taking a moment to remember what we're up to these days. Three European quarter finals on the bounce is unprecedented. Here's hoping this year it will become two European trophies.
Up the Villa. Up the Emery.

I had a pass out from the other half to get a ticket for this one, and could have easily got one having been to the game in Lille, but decided against it having promised that my only other away game this season would be in Istanbul if we get there. Turns out while chatting with my line manager this week, he'd have refused a leave request for this one anyway, and I can understand why, with the department temporarily down to four people from the usual eight as it is. Perhaps I need to retire and follow my dreams because a decade from now we might be back to where we were a decade ago.
Enjoy it if you're travelling boys and girls. Really enjoy it, because the future isn't guaranteed.

Dining at Osteria dell'Orsa - what a great recommendation! Thank you!

Really looking forward to the game now. This is the start of the business end of the season. Let's go and do a proper job, the lads should be pretty much rested and raring to go. Time to step it up a gear or two. We know Bologna will throw everything at us but no doubt Unai has a plan and it usually works.
European football is often like a game of chess and we have a Grand Master leading us.
0-3 Villa (Rogers, Watkins and whoever takes our penalties).

Totally agree. Currently enjoying the delights of Milan before getting the train to Bologna tomorrow. My last Villa game in Italy was Juventus in 1983. Hopefully a better result this time.

I reckon we will. We've always been streaky under Emery (with the good ones massively outweighing the bad, obviously). We've done a bad one, started a good one with McGinn and Youri back and a run of favourable fixtures.
Reckon we'll look back in June and wonder what all the panic was about.

Im feeling exactly the same. The West Ham win wasn’t just comfortable against a struggling team, it was an Emerys Villa performance, totally dominated a team that to be fair have been scrapping lately.
Cmon on the lads!!

This is where I am. It was the second half of the Lille game, just felt like we'd suddenly come out of the woods and everything was right again, from that point I've felt confident again.
-
So their manager's surname is Italiano. I though that kind of thing only happened to Stephen Ireland and Nicky English.

All the stars are aligned in that direction, barring Kamara’s absence. I want us to be one of those teams that not only wins, but looks like it’s going to win.

A draw to take back to VP wouldnt be a bad result at all. Just need to keep in it for the 2nd leg and keep our disapline no reds
