Onana on the bench is a massive surprise.

Ha, we finally have two actual no. 9s and Watkins gets immediately injured.

Is that a ‘just try and score a fuck load of goals’ lineup, or what? Saving Onana for harder games?  It’s very weird he’s on the bench.

Only came back a week or so ago, ease him through the schedule.

Tammy is a no alternative shoo in for Ollie, but Doug must have impressed Unai since he arrived?!?

Playing Onana midweek was a mistake, he was only jogging around anyway so it was pointless. Hopefully will be a good atmosphere with the returning heroes starting.

Surprised that luiz is starting over Onana.

Any idea how long Watkins is out for?  Surprised we didn’t put another CF on the bench - like that Wilson lad or the one we signed earlier in the window.

Anyway - a win with no injuries would make me very happy

I don’t love that Onana isn’t playing. They are a physical side. Hopefully Ollie is only out for this one.

It shows how much he trusts Bogarde. Onana just came back from an injury. He played midweek and given the extent of our midfield injuries we need to be able to rotate the line up. He’s on the bench if we need him. Hopefully this week Barkley also comes back into contention. Still feels a little light in the middle until SJM and Tielemans come back.

Afternoon everyone.

Like a few said , Onana shouldnt have played Thursday as he was at slow mode in that game and trying not to get stuck in , so suprised he didnt play in this one and not that .

I would have thrown JJ on the bench too .

The team should be good enough to get 3 pts .

Come on Villa . . .

Looking forward to the return of Tammy and Doug, surprised Collins is on the bench, he's being one of their best players this season.

Our midfield four are very light. Maybe Emery not impressed with Onana during the week but Bogarde struggled v Everton and a similar test today. Not as confident now. I'd have gone for Bailey on right but that's a marginal enough call.

I think it might be this. You'd start him against Brentford over Salzburg.

I also reckon Emery might be savvy enough to sell him in the summer. Can't have that kind of attitude in the dressing room. It'll turn other heads.

Happy with this selection. Looks balanced.

Onana is hit and miss and never great when we dominate possession which we will hopefully do today.

I might have picked Bailey for Sancho as Tammy needs service.

True. I'd have just played Bogarde and Hemmings (and we'd have probably lost), but I worship at the alter of Unai, so that was his decision and everything is fine.

Post by: Toronto Villa on February 01, 2026, 02:46:22 PM
The injuries especially in midfield have really affected us. The chemistry isn’t there and with the changes we have had to make will take time to show the cohesion we had with Kamara, SJM and Youri. Having Doug back is great but he will take time to get back to his best after a period where he didn’t play well or frequently. Bogarde is a good squad player but he’s not a true difference maker. And even Tammy won’t play the Ollie role that presses teams back with his running off ball. It will take us time to get this together again. Time we don’t really have.

Not a good half for Villa, even with 10 Brentford know how to work this, its going to be difficult, Bailey on Elliot on players that can run at a defence, Onana on, Sancho off, not quite sure what he's doing, Bogarde off, not sure what he's doing, Tammy looks the part but plays an entirely different role in his natural game to Ollie, Rogers is missing Ollie, some work to do here.

Yep. Not sure what Emi was supposed to do there. First thing was a cross so he went to dive in front ot Thiago, recovered quickly and then the finish was where no goal keeper would have been standing to save it.

I'd bring him on because he's far more likely to try and get in the box. Tammy let a cross run at one point, clearly expecting Sancho to be behind him following up. He was standing gormlessly outside the area.

Barkley's good for a goal but no way Luiz and Barkley in a 2. Barkley at 10 maybe after a while but would give Buendia a lot longer first. Bailey for Sancho and Onana for Bogarde. Get our tempo up . Cash and Maatsen bombing on.

That has to be the worst VAR decision yet.  How can you go back and review a throw-in at the other end of the pitch, especially when you haven't got the technology to make a proper decision?

So what happens when a corner is given and it’s not a corner and a goal is scored. Should the goal be give ?

VAR robs the fun out of celebrating a goal. It just isnt used properly at all and takes far too long seeing if a pube is offside for example.

You watch them scrotes score now

Whilst it looks out, the one last season for Newcastle (?) also looked well out yet they went with on field decision as no camera angle could definitely show it was in or out. I don't think that is definitetive enough either in the same circumstances.

I can just about accept it being disallowed if the ball was definitely out, my issue is if they knew it was definitely out. Even the tiniest doubt and it has to stand.

They haven't got the technology to tell for sure, so are guessing.  So how can that be clear and obvious?

That’s what I don’t get. They aren’t so why does that one get checked. Because it’s a goal? Or they all have to get checked.

In the NFL on the field decision stands. So for example had the goal not been given to start with then there wouldn’t have been enough obvious evidence that an error had been made to overturn that decision. That it took so long to determine that there was error immediately deems there not being enough definable evidence to disallow it. I know we have benefitted from VAR but the whole rule and how it’s applied is killing the game and natural joy of it.

To have one of the best home records in Europe the past 12 months, and then lose to Everton and possibly Brentford in back to back games would be horrendous.
