This will be an easy win so rest key players and give the squad players a start.

I'd like to see Guessand, Sancho, Hemmings, Barkley, Lindelof, Maatsen and Bogarde all start.

Go Ahead showed that if you mess around it can kick you in the nuts. I'd prefer us to go strong and think about heavy rotation in later games when/if we have clinched qualification.

Talking of making changes, what has happened to Garcia? He's not even being mentioned in the usual injury news nowadays.  Shame really as he looked ok and he's ideal for games like this.

He was apparently fit for the weekend, according to someone reasonably well-connected on Twitter (Tanswell or little Townsley I think).

Bizot, Hemmings/Garcia, Konsa, Lindelof, Maatsen, Barkley, Bogarde, Guessand, Buendia, Malen, Watkins.

I'd start Elliot but more chance of Billy playing ahead of Harvey. Going to have to give McGinn, Cash, even Rogers a breather after all the recent football they have played. Torres is our only fit option at LCB so best to see how Lindelof gets on there.

Go string to get us virtually qualified, no dicking about.
Marrinez
Cash
Konsa
Maatsen
Torres
Kamara
Tielemans
McGinn
Malen
Watkins
Rogers

Try and get into a decent lead and then get Barclay, Bogarde, Onana (if fit), Guessand on for Kamara, Tielemans, McGinn, one of Watkins, Malen or Rogers

There are always a couple of games that start early so there can be more on TV.

The Bruges, Monaco and Young Boys matches all started at that time last season.

6.45pm European time, 5.45pm UK time.

Same back four.  Bailey and Buendia starting we look very attacking and yes I’m an amateur.

British exceptionalism at its absolute peak there cd I’m afraid. It’s not all about us.

And yes I accept it’s a shit kick off time and the consequent impacts on gates and revenue. But as one of probably half a dozen clubs who probably got the biggest slice of the TV revenue pot for the Europa League I don’t think we’ve really got too much to moan about as a club though it’s obviously inconvenient for individuals.

Matches should be played when people can attend them. I don't think that's "British exceptionalism". Portuguese, Icelandic and Irish teams shouldn't be playing in the rush hour slot, either.

Meanwhile they have Panathinaikos kicking off in the late slot so 10pm locally.

Imbeciles.

I don’t see why it would be so hard the schedule the early kick offs for CET countries though - there are more than enough games for that to take place. A 6.45 kick off is at least outside of the majority of working hours, 5.45 is just going to cause unnecessary chaos as match goers get the same trains and buses as people going home from work and school. It’s not just us it is inconveniencing, it’s people who have no interest in going to the game as well.

Fair point, I suppose UEFAs insistence on two KO times per Match Day and that everyone is in one of the slots doesn’t help here. They seem to be able to make exceptions for Azerbaijani and Kazakh clubs so why not everyone else. Of course TV will drive some of that decision making as well. The good thing is as one of the major clubs in the comp we at least predominantly get the 8pm slot at home and 9pm when we’re away.

My logic in resting a few players at this point is that this is probably our easiest remaining game on paper, which we should be able to win with a squad side. We'll want to finish as high up the table as possible to ensure home games later in the competition, so every game is important regardless of whether we've mathmatically confirmed our place in the top 8 or not. Therefore if we're going to rest players at any point, I'd rest them here, rather than in Istanbul for example.

Once (assuming) we've confirmed top eight then it'll be a sharp pivot to "we need to finish top two to get home advantage in the second leg of the knock-out stages".

I can't imagine people will be willing to sack off the last match against Fenerbahce if that is still at stake.

And if we try and play (what people would describe as) our best eleven in every match because it's all so important, our best players will be on their knees by April when we will really need them firing.

Agreed. We can't do the MON approach, and when our squad is as good as it (theoretically) is there's no need to either.

Post by: AV82EC on November 25, 2025, 04:21:08 PM
Yep we need to manage minutes. All we need to do is win 3 of the last 4 games, finish on 18pts which will be fine for top 8 and take it from there. I’d be happy with three boring 2-0 style Maccabi wins playing half a team each time.

Agree, it is also about getting game time into the legs of the squad and trying to get them up to First choice level.
You don’t do that by not playing them.

I'd deffo rest Cash and Konsa and/or Torres,  positions where we're not well stocked with ready-to-go replacements, especially with an eye of the upcoming PL games.

As an aside, it's interesting to compare our very strong form with how imperiously those three have been performing. It's what has been driving us, I think.

After that, starts for Bizot, Bogarde, Guessand, Malen, Tielemans, please. Is throwing Sancho in there too much rotation?

Stupid KO time and stupid opposition #2

Not as stupid as Palace at 7 on a Sunday and probably unfair to the Babbies.

We really don't need another GAE this evening so a thoughtful team selection is required although it's not as if the Manager doesn't do anything other than thoughtful.

I want a win and goal(s) for Ollie, little added time and home in time to watch Shona McHornbag on the jungle.

2-0

Without wanting be all "trust whatever the manager does", I think I'm pretty comfortable with whatever he does tonight.

If he thinks it needs the same eleven as started against Leeds, then fine. If he thinks we can get away with half of them on the bench and start some of the others, then also fine.

I'd like minor rotation of 3-4 players and then a mix of senior players and kids on the bench so we can adapt to the game. Winning is priority, minutes in legs for squad players is 2nd.

At least I'd like Bogarde and Sancho to start.

As much as I would like to see us play our strongest team and get the job done by half time, the reality is that some of these players need a rest. Playing tonight, Sunday, Wednesday and then again with the early kick off against Arsenal on the following Saturday, we are going to need our best players in peak condition.

Especially those areas of the pitch where we have accumulated, I would think, most individual minutes and have the least immediate depth - the back 4, excluding left back.

Torres was on media duty yesterday - I've noticed that players on media duties with Unai tend not to start - or at least, it seems that way.
