That’s another conservative set up.  Elliott’s appearances clause might be true!

Bertie on the bench. Also Xhaka plays for them apparently. If I ever knew that, I had forgotten it again.

Isn't it 10 appearances and the clause to purchase is activated. Maybe/hopefully we've agreed to only pay them the fee at the end of the season.

SoccerHQ has consistently claimed Xhaka as a top signing for Sunderland and I know you respect his input (SHQ, not X).

McGinn in the middle makes sense. I'd have Rogers in 10 and Guessand and Buendia either side.

Bugger the clause we need to win games.

Hoping for a shake up, fresh approach, a reset but it smacks of same old.

Hopefully Guessand can some sort of impact and we need something from Watkins and Rogers, they have been awful so far.

Doesnt fill me with confidence.  Think we’ll struggle to break them down.  Hope I’m wrong.

I don’t think Elliot not starting has to do with clause - more the series adaption process.  I wonder if that’s why guessard seems to be the most trusted out the new batch because he looks pretty good going backwards.  Maybe he is doing more of what unai wants

Think it will be the usual formation with Buendia and Rogers starting on the left and in the number 10 positions (not sure which way round) and Guessand on the right.

Feels like a pretty big game today with Europe starting on Thursday and that now looking like our best chance of success this season.

Watkins and Rogers need big performances today. Those two in particular have been way below their normal levels for ages.

Buendia starting again… pffft.

Yeah, his performance versus Brentford suggests he needs some time getting up to speed. Probably better suited to home games where we’d have more possession too.  Buendia’s extra energy might be considered necessary away from home.

£5m season long loan fee.
10 appearances and the compulsory option to buy is activated. We may be buying Elliott on Jan 1st (new UEFA calendar year) or season end, either way you're right that it's bollox we are not playing Elliot because of an appearance clause.

More reasons? No transfers until Jan 1st. It's kind of fucking obvious.

9 of the starting 11 are from the Steve Gerrard era. After three years no academy breakthroughs, one true transfer success and one with a lot still to prove. That’s just not good enough by all concerned in a sport which evolves so quickly; tactically, mentally and physically. We are starting to look old, tired and predictable. We all trust in Unai so let’s hope his “dependables” can pull us through this current situation and borderline crisis.

No, it’s Rogers. We play with so little width that his position is by far the most important. When Youri’s fit, Morgan is free to roam and given a ton of rope by Unai. Without Youri and in this form he looks average and has far too little impact.

Sunderland will put everyone behind the ball and hit it long on the break. A point will be a great result for them. We need to be much more decisive in the box. A goal for us opens things up and we should be able to go on to win.

Yes, he buzzes around like an annoying gnat, but that’s the sum of him. Constantly losing possession, not making his passes and very lightweight.

That from Buendia just before half time is why I don't rate him. Giving it away when you're trying a defence splitting pass is one thing but to completely mishit a 5 yard ball to an unmarked player can never be acceptable and he does it far too often.

I'd replace him with Sancho for the 2nd half, pace and width will win this for us.

I hear you Andy mate, that's valid and you can see others say similar too. I kinda feel some of it is down to our players not being on the same wavelength at times - that attempt at the throughball was a bit heavy but our player could have made a bit more of an effort to catch it, or - and this is wild - anticipate it? I always though under Deano, Buendia was the one who would up our tempo by playing passes that forced us to get running.

I don't know exactly what has happened to us, but we are awful. We are as bad as anything I have seen in the league so far this season.

We are playing a newly promoted team who will probably be relegated. We have had loads of the ball and we have offered virtually nothing.

Sutton called if after 20 mins when he said how slow we are in possession with players taking too many touhces.

Rogers looks petulant and is playing like he can't be arsed. Beundia tries, but is dismal.

Guessand has to score with the only chance we've had.

Our set piece deliveries are crap as well.

Unai needs to change it up at HT.

Sunderland even before the sending off are dire, it shows how we have gone backwards when we pose such little threat against ten men. Watkins and Rogers lose possesion so easy and Buendia for all his effort is just not up to premiership standard. If we do not beat these today not sure where we go from there.

He usually takes 3 sitters to score 1, so the next one is going in.

We only have to wait another 4 games…

Unai stomps off down the tunnel. Not sure what exactly it is but something is very wrong.

Absolutely. Not sure what it is but he looks frustrated and pissed off. Either the players are not doing what he wants or he's lost the dressing room. We do have some good players but they are not playing as they should together. Slow, ponderous, little cutting edge.

Just seen Ollies last minute miss.  He's missed some sitter in the last couple of years but that was a bad one.

There is clearly something that is holding this team back.  I was expecting a tough season this year but we really look as though the players have never seen each other before.  Frustrating for see Unai storming off because I suspect he is part of the problem - certainly with Watkins.

Lets hope these players can get motivated for the Europa League
