Agree with that line up. Does playing both Pau and Mings mean we'll definitely keep a clean sheet, or we'll definitely concede?

Like the new look of the Line up page.

Emi looks very lean and trim in that photo, but the new keeper kits are slim-fit. Hopefully, he'll get a rousing rendition of 'The World's No. 1."

Bench shows how much we need to bring a few in, Konsa out and we have 2 keepers and 2 kids. We're screwed if a few are out.

No real pace up front again. At least we have Torres to potentially play balls forward from defence.

So we have gone for basically the same line up to last week as it obviously worked so well with 3 shots on goal, perhaps I watched a different game?

Yes, lack of pace is potentially a problem - Burrowes and Rowe on the bench offer it.

Weird selection for me. Can't see how we create much with that, and two left footers at CB, yikes. Hopefully King Unai proves us wrong once again...

Malen ain't a starter, no surprise he's a sub. Impact player. It's a physical opponent, think we've chosen the right team.

Have Mings and Torres started games together?

Unaiball. Bore everybody to death for 70 minutes unless we get an early goal, then make a couple of subs and hope/pray we can get the winner. It's a formula that works, why change it?

Because right footers  have lots of exposure to playing on the left whereas left footers tend to be needed on the left.

True. Be interesting to see how we set up.
As has been said, looks like we'll aim to stay tight and go for it second half, seems to be the default these days.

Olsen
Disasi
McGinn
Watkins
Asensio
Barkley
Garcia
Maatsen
Malen

Well fuckety, Mings and Pau at long last. Let's see.

Odd that Emery switched Kamara back there the last day when Torres was on the bench.

I don't like the lack of balance in the team. The 2 x LCBs and Onana next to Kamara in midfield. Ideal game to have finally given Malen a start, very little pace in that team.

It really depends on how expansive Brentford choose to be. Pace is fairly useless if they've got ten behind the ball.

I really do not understand having a 3rd keeper when you could have at least another outfield kid there.

Is there a rule I'm missing?
Title: Re: Brentford vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Stinkin_Thinkin on August 23, 2025, 03:01:08 PM
Malen has a big chance today and in the next few weeks, no Bailey or Ramsey, the traffic in front of him has  cleared but he needs to make big impact off the bench. I still see him as a bit of a Darius Vassell and he goes for power like every time (which isnt a bad thing)

I believe there is a rule in Europe but not the Premier League. Brentford only have one goalkeeper on the bench.

Fucking tepid bollocks. We are so much better than this lot yet we give teams way too much respect. Just fucking play to our strengths. Why do we not do that? Against Man U at the end of the last season we simply gave them all the ball. Newcastle last week we didn’t even try to dominate. And today again we have started allowing them too much of the ball.

A fucking disaster and I'm kind of tempted to write the season off already. I've had this horrible feeling it's a bridge too far for us and perhaps even for Unai, in the same way it might be for Guardiola. We'll see.

Since the start of that bloody Man Utd game nothing seems to have really gone right.

I’ll say it, it starts with the manager. I love Unai but he’s overthinking it. I want him to go out to win and he goes out to contain and counter. We don’t have a good enough defence to contain effectively. We don’t pace to counter. We have a good enough midfield to keep possession and press and we don’t do it enough. We ask for trouble and we get it. Brentford are shit and we are now playing our game in trying to win.

Finished the half ok but since when have we turned into a team that targets set pieces? Martinez very fortunate to get away with that goal.

For the goal, just highlights the concern of playing a lefty like Mings at RCB. He got lost and Torres far too soft as per usual in the tackle to bail him out.

Tielemans has got us playing a bit since he dropped back. McGinn has been good. Rogers seems hungover.

We look absolutely terrible. It’s a combination of playing overly defensive and completely shite football. Mings not winning any headers and Pau giving the ball away + running like an OAP is a big problem.

Rogers and Watkins have both been completely anonymous too.

Not one good thing to say about that half. Other than we’re only losing 1-0.

Massive let-off with their disallowed goal. Seemed perfectly fine to me. Reminded me of our disallowed goal against Juve. Torres, Rogers and Onana have been quite poor for me. Just sloppy, disconnected at times. Looking for positives, at least it's only 1.

Yeah we have no width what so ever and Brentford just get back into shape. McGinn on the right never works for me. Not really convinced with Buendia either, Surely Malen and Guessand have to come on.

Everything's congested and Brentford look like Stoke 2008 or Rep Of Ireland when Keith Andrews played for them. Play the percentages, long throws, second balls, waste time when leading. Awful shite to watch.

We need effective width, that's where the space is. Get Malen on if you think he has the brains to use the byline effectively, I have my doubts.

The entire back line seem to stay on the ball longer than they need passing among themselves. I can see from the feed Youri in the pocket from Onana dragging his man out wide and Morgan coming off his man deeper but they hardly receive the ball.

He always says the league is the priority, but if we are sitting lower mid-table, then surely not.
