Title: Team line ups 1988-89
Post by: pbsmith on June 09, 2025, 06:51:00 AM
Going back a few years here but do any Villa stattos out there have the team lineups and scorers from the following slightly off best games in the 80s please?

13/04/1988 founders day centenary vs Birmingham City won 5-2
05/08/89 pre season friendly vs Hibernian won 1-0

TIA

Platt scored twice against Small Heath and I think Tony Daley got one and I think Ian Olney did as well. The other one might have been Gareth Williams. I do remember it being played on a weekday afternoon for some reason - I was there because I was still at school (just) and it was the Easter holidays.

I can't remember who scored in the Hibs game but it was the first time I saw Paul McGrath in a Villa shirt and it was a very warm day.

Same here, I was about to leave school and was my last school Easter holidays and went to this one.
I was also at the Hibernian friendly, and Kent Nielsen scored the only goal late on just after he signed.

I think Nielsen came on as sub and scored the winner. He seemed to have enjoyed himself in the pre-season, as I remember someone behind me commenting "fuck me, we've signed the fat Jan Molby" when he came on.

Can't find much about that Blose game, first time I've even heard of it, but according to another forum our scorers were Daley, Platt x 2, Williams and Olney. Attendance: 6,645 😬

Was the Hibs friendly the one where they came up Witton Lane afterwards looking for trouble?

Found this on Wikipedia on a page about the CCS (Capital City Service), which seems to be their group of hoolie weirdoes...

"After the match the CCS clashed with the Villa mob outside the main stand, two Hibs boys were arrested. Later on the Hibs casuals fought with an ice-hockey crowd exiting from an ice-rink during which a Hibs boys stabbed at last one person with a hypodermic needle."

v Hibs 1-0 (Nielsen 88) att 6,622
Spink, Price, Gray, Platt, Mountfield, McGrath, Birch, Olney (Nielsen 70), Ormondroyd (Daley 60), Cowans, Callaghan. Unused subs: Butler, Blake, Williams.

The Founders Day game (no line up) featured a half time game between former Villa & Blues players “wearing the garb of the 1880s”.

From programmes of that time, not my memory, although I do remember the Small Heath game being a midweek afternoon as I was working so didn’t go. Went to the Hibs game though, which was Paul McGrath’s first game for us.

That Edwardian match sounds weird, why were Blose allowed to have twelve players? Did Stan Lynn play half for each team maybe?

I can vaguely remember a programme with pictures of that Hibs game and seem to remember Adrian Heath featuring for us?

Having thought about this for a big chunk of the day first I am amazed at how I could remember all the scorers from that Small Heath game and secondly, and I may be remembering this incorrectly, but I think Peter McParland played in the half-time 'Founders'  game in the period kits.

Brilliant to see those pics.
As is mandatory, I am booing at the picture of Nigel Callaghan.

I was at the Hibs game too.

No offence to Kent but you should see him now.

I really should have looked! I also think Malcolm Beard played for them.

Many thanks to all who replied, that’s filled in a few gaps, attended both games as a teenager

I took the afternoon off for the Rags game, sat up in the Trinity and the only thing I can recall was the PA playing up and emitting a crackle every now and again that sounded like we were under fire from snipers.

You probably were, I reckon they'll all have been armed with the Spud Guns.
