Title: Aston Villa v Newcastle United
Post by: olaftab on April 16, 2025, 09:15:10 AM
When: Saturday 19 Aril 17:30 Kick Off
Where: Villa Park
Not sure if this is going be a "bit of afters game" but it must not be. Very important fixture against one of our rivals for top 5. Both teams are on a good run  but at minimum we must not lose this game.

Hope we take the momentum from last night and go for it. Might be dead on our feet but we have options off the bench now and great to see Ross back on the pitch.

Massive game for us though and last night shows what we can do.

3-2 to us

Home win, sun bed wanker to be beaten like drum wankers were (in 2nd leg).

If Joelinton picks up a yellow tonight he'll be suspended for two games, which I guess includes this match. That would be nice.

I'm hoping we can follow up a barnstormer with another barnstormer and it won't be after the Lord Mayor's show. Didn't we follow up the 3-0 vs Newcastle with a poor performance? Need to cut that out.

Need to go as strong as possible against them in midfield so I'd be looking at playing all of Onana / Kamara / Tielemans / McGinn.

No idea which attacker you leave out though.

I hope he’s playing personally.  I hope they have their strongest side possible when we hand them a much deserved thrashing.

Hope we take the positives from last night, and the Euro experience as a whole, and that they aren't deflated.  Statement victory would set us up for a big finish to the season.

Obviously a win would be fantastic, but I don't think a draw is too horrendous a result.

I think Chelsea and Forest are the two teams we stand the best chance of finishing above to make the top 5, and I'm not sure either of them will win at Fulham and Tottenham respectively this weekend, so we may well still be in touch of them with a point, and we'll have used up one of the two most difficult league games we have left this season.

I'm not sure it's an absolute must win. It depends on how the other results go. A draw wouldn't be the end of the world.

I feel that we have to win this one. The psychology coming off a rousing 2nd half vs PSG may well help us to take the game to the Jawdies in a way we haven't for a while.

In an act of appalling scheduling me and Nodge will be on a plane back from Dublin (we were hoping that it would move to Sunday or be an earlier KO), so will be there in spirit(s).

In stark contrast to the usual feeling after a Cup exit I think the place will be bouncing but Newcastle are not far off that so it makes for a decent game. Emery will not relax one iota after last night so the players won't either. I see it being tight and draw would not be the end of the world but the fact that we're at home might tip it our way.

Oh, and whoever scores for us needs to head to the touchline and give it the big 'un to that Cuprinol ******.

1-0

Our last 10 games in all competitions WWWWWWWLWW.

We're in form.  We've got a full squad to choose from (I believe).  We have players motivated to do again next season what they all experienced last night.

No one, and I mean no one, will want to face us right now.  Last night's second half will have every opposition team hoping that THAT Villa side doesn't turn up.

It's Unai's job to make sure it does.  Let's batter them, a statement win, and have everyone else worried about whether they can get a Champions League place WITH us, rather than INSTEAD of us.

Cracking post. The manager, players and fans should be well up for these last 8 games (hopefully) of the season. We’re coming down the home straight like a fucking steam train.

Chelsea, Forest et al should be bricking it.

I think we do need to win this. It’s going to be tough, but we have shown we can beat one of the world’s best/form sides. If we hit the level we did in the second half we can beat anyone. Crucially one of Newcastle’s key attributes is how they press the ball, PSG are masters of that and we got through them.

Plus we owe them for their behaviour at their place and humiliating us on several occasions.

We beat PSG last night, arguably the best side in Europe, if we take the second half performance into the Newcastle game we take all 3 points, Villa win for me but one thing we can't do is depend on other results now, we have to have the win. Thought a few weeks back, couldn't see Brighton a problem and couldn't really see Forest to much of a problem always thought it would be these that would make or break the season.

This is a very good point, its very difficult to get out of a losing habit. What was easy suddenly becomes difficult and you suspect the manager may start tinkering. I hope Bournemouth and Arsenal absolutely spank them and they turn up at Wembley thinking they'll just need to repeat earlier in the season.

Really tough game and a style of football we've struggled against when they're in peak form which it looks like they are now. Our home form is a big boost for us though and the possibility that Howe still isn't on the touchline. They've done amazing without him in the last couple of home games but they've had it pretty easy in both and a really tough away game is probably where you need your manager the most.

On the flip side they are probably looking at it thinking a draw is great for them with the league table as it is, and I think might not be end of the world for us in a tough fixture post-PSG as it keeps momentum going and set us up for a crack at City. I think it might be a score draw.

Even today after all the highs of the last two and half years I still have this sense of foreboding when it comes to crucial moments and times for Villa.  I am almost resigned to glorious failure.  For example, I think Palace have already switched their attentions to the cup entirely and will turn up against us.  And then I expect us to finish where we are now in the PL.  At some point I am going to get so confident that I relinquish these thoughts from my head.  But by that time my sense of foreboding will be that Emery is bound to be moving on at that point!

I have absolutely no idea how to call this. Two possibilities. Either the PSG game took so much out of the guys, not only physically but also emotionally and they repeat some of the earlier post CL games performances, or they are so fired up from the emotion and the second half on Tuesday that they carry this on for Saturday. I'm hoping for the latter, and with Emery constantly stressing that the league position is the main aim, I'm leaning towards this option.

Newcastle have won six in a row. So I don't think you can really say either team's form makes them favourites. We tend to be good at home but are also often shit against Newcastle. I think Newcastle would be happier than us with the draw, not sure if that helps us or not.

They are very good at what they do.
We are very good at what we do.
Most of the clued up PL teams have worked out that if they allow our midfield players to turn and run, they will be in trouble. So they just do the technical foul.
We must not be bullied, and repay all such activities in kind, and with interest.

Our wide players, full backs, wing backs are whatever the fuck they are called these days will need to be on top form.
We will win.

I would like to see Watkins on from the start, with Rashford also starting, out wide.

I’d agree that I’d be starting Ollie and having Rashford out wide.

Feels like running quickly at Trippier is going to be a good idea.

Maatsen and Rashford together on that side wouldn't be the worst way to set up.

Rashford/Watkins doesn't seem to work together. I reckon Rashford will start this one with Malen wide .

Hasn't really worked so far. Leaves the midfield unbalanced especially if Rogers is on the right. Maybe switch McGinn over there instead

Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Mings
Digne
Kamara
Tielemans
McGinn
Ramsey
Rogers
Watkins

Interesting to see the training pics released by the club. Assume looking at the weather they trained this morning. No signs of Bouba - that's because he was in the French bakers in Hockley Heath at 11.00am with his nipper - buying up half the shop !

Baguettes, croissants the lot.
Think Kamara needs a big game tomorrow, he wasn't at his best for the PSG games .

I've had a butchers on their forum, they seem to think they're now a hybrid of Brazil 70 and Guardiola's Barcelona so it will be extra sweet to twat their fat shirtless fans and Cuprinol man back up to the wastelands.

Such is his custom there, that it's known locally as the 'Boubangerie'.

Bouba needs to get up into the Cotswolds, visit to La Tradition French Bakery in Brailles, Looks nothing, no gloss, hidden secret, fantastic place if you can find it open, French guy that runs it and a string of French girls that come over to mind the place for him, brilliant if you're well versed in French my wife loves going in there just for the chat, one thing though the products are second to none, ( he's also at Lower Clopton Farm).

Newcastle always seem to treat this game as a big one and are always up for it. We’ve been caught out a few times by that, lets hope that changes today.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Newcastle United
Post by: PaulWinch again on April 19, 2025, 07:56:11 AM
We need it to change, because the result of this game is absolutely massive for us. A win and we’re 2 points behind Newcastle, level with Forest, worst case scenario 1 point behind Man City and 3 points ahead of Chelsea. Granted with two of those having a game in hand. But lose and that picture is totally different - Newcastle are 8 points ahead and gone, Man City are quite possibly 4 points ahead and Forest and Chelsea have a chance to open a gap.

This game is huge for us.

Best wishes to Eddie Howe on his recovery from pneumonia but one thing I found satisfying about this win was because it reversed a couple of crashing down to Earth situations that Villa have experienced in the past. When Martin O'Neil had just left us in 2010 the first game post MON was against West Ham that we put a great performance in and won 3-1 (James Milner's last game for us). We went to Newcastle full of optimism only to get thrashed 6-0. Then, just after Gerrard had been sacked we bounced back to beat Brentford (who were a bogey side for us at the time) with a great performance. Again we went to Newcastle only again to get a pasting, 4-0 this time. This week we reversed the situation: Newcastle had great results and performances this week while Eddy Howe recovers in hospital. They came to Villa Park full of optimism only to be bought crashing down to Earth, as we were those couple of times. A taste of their own medicine.
