Title: Aston Villa V Brugge 2nd Leg Pre Match Thread.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on March 08, 2025, 08:46:13 PM
Bruges don’t play in their league until tomorrow.  And it’s a local derby v Cercle Bruges.  This won’t be easy at all but I said that last week.  First goal crucial.  We get it and it’s tie done.

Keep it tight first half. They have to go for it more and more so the spaces will appear. A fairly unexciting 1-1 or 2-1 win. Same defence as Saturday, without question. No Bailey, McGinn can play right with Kamara/Tileman's. JJ on the left.

Agree.
If we get the first goal, I think we then fairly comfortably get to 3-0, before they get a consolation. If they get the first goal mind!!

0-2

But that would mean Extra-Time. So for once, you MUST choose an end-result that isn't 0-2. I know it's asking a lot of you as your 0-2 predictions are as reliable as a Big Daz "Great read, Dave" post to Snr Woodhall's latest reportage, but Legion, please - for the greater good of the forum. Thank you.

Result

Cercle Brugge 1-3 Club Brugge. They had the same starting XI as the first leg last week.

That puts them 2nd in the Belgian Pro League, 9pts off top.

They've only got 1more proper league game next Saturday.

They then go into a home and away play-off against the other top 6 teams to decide the 2 Champs League places that Belgium gets.

They carry over half their regular season points into the play-off.

So I wonder if they've pretty well conceded Wednesday's game and are focusing on League wins to maximise the points they can carry forward to the play-offs and give themselves the best chance of winning a spot for next season's Champs League?

Nah, they'll take heart from how they opened us up a few times in the first leg and will feel that we'll give up chances which we will as that's what we do.

I went to Vigo. Joachim goal. Remember going back to work and everyone saying job done and I said far from it they were miles better than us and so it proved. A young Makele played for them amongst others if I recall correctly.

Haim Revivo too, a playmaker who we were linked with (along with the fabled Benni McCarthy) for a long time after and whom I really wanted us to get. Valery Karpin was also really good for them. Celta became my Spanish team after the VP game, just thought they were sexy AF.

I suspect this will be a very tricky game..they showed in the first leg, and certainly away at Atalanta, that they can be very dangerous. Obviously we can be too.

It'll be interesting to see how Emery decides to play this one. Will he be cautious and defence minded, or decide to attack? We've seen a few times what we're like in an end-to-end battle, it's fun to watch but it's nerve-wracking too!

Bailey seems to lack confidence to push up the wing fully. He cuts back so the play is entirely on front of the massed opposition defence again. If he pushed on a bit further, he might just make serious inroads. At least there's a good chance he would win a throw in or corner for us and keep the ball behind their front line

I'm hopeful that by the time we wake up on Wednesday morning for the return leg of the Bruges tie, we have the carrot of a trip to the Parc des Princes dangling right in our faces after they have systematically dismantled Liverpool tomorrow night.

Also hoping we stick with the same back 4 plus an Emi return, and its a straightforward 3-0 home win for us.

Well anyway two things
one there is a magician at Villa hospitality and two well two is for the magician who hasn’t revealed himself so it doesn’t matter and it’s actually veering off topic to an extent though as a magician is there at VP still counts in some ways .

I will not go on and I was loathe to start a new specific thread as rather self indulgent especially during lent period
I can speak to the club about the magician.
Or I can try and find the solving of the trick online I witnessed .
Yes i’ll do that as well

Id expect McGinn on right and Tielemans next to Kamara. Might be the ideal game to try Asensio ahead of Rogers but no chance of it.

Expecting a tough night. We will get chances and one will be enough. 1-1.

Yep would be a good tie. If we win excellent  but if we lose no shame going out to PSG

Can we please stop tempting fate. Bruges aren't mugs and this is not done yet.

With all due respect, who is tempting fate? I havent said we are definitely going to win look at my previous  posts ive continously  said  if we get past brugges.

I get called negative for predicting a loss and i haven't done that shows i cant win no matter what i do or say 🤷‍♂️

We need to be right at it. We’ve seen this season we’re capable of putting in a shocker and conceding plenty of goals. Two goals is a brilliant advantage but it’s not tie defining unless we make it be.

Imperative we don't concede early.
I think Emery will set us up to absorb and slow the game down.
The longer the game goes on at 0 0 the more they come out,
Expect nerve wracking.

They'll have a game plan where I reckon they'll try and go in at half time 1 up. Obviously, if we get an early goal they'll have to come out attack. It'll be tough though.

We were better than them at their place and we will be better than them at our place because we’re a much better team, have better players and better subs. Yes, they’ll put up a fight of sorts but it won’t be enough.
3-1 win.

Not sure we were better than them last week. You might make a case for it being even but on balance of chances they should have got something. Glad they didn’t obviously and we should have enough, but it might be tough.

That’s my take as well. Would have been happy with the draw last week and that would have been a fairer reflection of the game, not that I’m complaining about the two goal advantage.

Why are we always so fair minded when we win a tight one, but if we lose one (even without the defence errors Bruges made) all hell breaks loose.

I’m with Brend, we are better than them 1-11 before the subs even come on

Yep, fat lot of good it did them though. I honestly can’t see anything other than a win. I’m not overly confident just confident. They’re not PSG, or any Madrid they’re a Belgium team in a shit league. We should be trouncing them. Yes, we can fall to pieces on occasion but this isn’t one of them.

If we can't score a goal at home, then we deserve to go out.

If we DO score, then they'll need four to win it. In any game that's sufficiently open for them to score four, then I'd expect us to score MORE than one.

If we make them commit players forward, then there will be opportunities for us at the other end and we'll be fine. The thing we absolutely must not do is gift them goals.

Fortunately, that's something we never, ever do.

Holte End for me tomorrow, last time I watched Villa in the European Cup/Champions League from The Holte End was in 1983 versus Juve with my now dearly departed Dad.  A win for the old man would be super. Juve remain to this day the greatest footballing side I’ve ever seen at Villa Park.
Other than Wolves at #levels, of course?
I was there at the Juve game Olaftab, and I agree with you. Villa were brilliant, Juve were playing football from another planet. No complaints from anyone that night either (other than McNaught's header being disallowed. Wrong decision). Like you, I was also with my dearly departed dad.

Both of the saved penalties were very poor, the Nunez one in particular was pretty obvious which side he was going and was the easiest height for the keeper.

PSGs first penalty was brave and could have easily been saved but the next 2 were unstoppable and the last one, whilst placed similar to Nunez, did a much better job of selling the keeper to go the other way.
