Can't do much about Martinez and Asensio being out, but Disasi at right-back?

What rumours?

That they had been seen on a list of players due to do training exercises at Bodymoor this afternoon so wouldn't have travelled down.

This game's a write off. Hopefully we don't lose by more than one midweek then we have plenty of time to get Martinez fit again.

I have to admit that one is strange. Garcia has been brilliant there, Disasi not so at Chelsea and not with us the couple of times it has been tried. If he moved Konsa there I might be less worried. But missing Martinez for Olsen and that doesn't bode me with confidence we will be on 45 points and have a better GD at the end of the match.

Cash, Garcia, and Konsa would be better options there. I could see us losing 3-0 here.

No idea why Martinez and Asensio are out, and you have to question Disasi over Garcia at right back.

Very defensive bench
Only 2 forwards

Another of Unai's left field selections that doesn't come off?

Not hopeful.

I'm starting to find some of these premier league team selections a bit odd tbh.

Rashford surely by now is capable of starting two games in four days? Holding him back v Palace didn't work at all. He should be starting this today given Brentford play a high line at home.

Also can anyone explain this. We signed Garcia and started him v Wolves, Ipswich and Liverpool. Aside from the gift for Liverpool first goal he did o.k in those games. Cash just played in the week and Disasi looked alright centrally.

Why are we now playing Disasi at RB?! I get Konsa as he's had two and a half years of playing in Emery's system but we should be keeping Disasi central surely.

I find it difficult for people bringing up the fatigue excuse when we're not even interested in starting the two players excluded from our CL squad four days after in the prem.

I hope we win but that 11 dosen't look convincing and no good bringing on Rashford and Kamara if we're losing 2-1 as it didn't work at Palace so I get the feeling Unai's thread will be busy after this game as I think he's trying to be way too clever with these prem selections and it simply isn't working away from home.

There were a couple of those YouTube AI "news stories" about Ramsey and Asesnio having a training ground row the day before the Brugga game. JJ passed to Asensio for that shot on goal he had so I assume all this shiz is being propagated by some Bloser in a Halesowen maisonette.

Just the two on the bench.

This is a ludicrous team selection. We can't really be complaining about fatigue if likes of Tielemans and Watkins keep getting selected. Really no need to risk Mings picking up another injury either.

Huge game for Ramsey this I feel. Beyond awful at Wolves when given a start but decent cameos since. Time to deliver.

Rogers, McGinn, Tielemans have played the last 400,000 on the trot, we're spending the GDP of a small country to have Rashford and Asensio as some sort of window dressing. Whatever you call that, it's not 'using the squad more'.

There are certainly players Unai wants out there at all costs. When Rogers limped off against Chelsea Unai was basically praying in post match interviews he'd be fit for the Palace game and there he was. Feels like the only game he's missed this season was when he was suspended against Leicester. He's had a very good season but there have been games when he's made little impact like Ipswich at home.

McGinn is another who is pretty much automatic as soon as he's fit after an injury, same for Konsa.

The problem then is you sign players who just become squad players and that can go either way. In fairness Maatsen being continually benched has been justified by how good Digne has been.

Bigger problem though we've again signed a RB and Unai would rather stick Disasi there which is baffling as he looked very uncomfortable playing there at Brugge.

I get Konsa as he's played in this system for two and a half years but playing Disasi over Garcia who's just had the week off and is fresh feels a bad call to me.

Rashford with one prem start in five now and Malen with one start in about ten prem games he's been available for are also interesting calls, even more so if Bailey just reverts back to cutting inside and constantly losing the ball today.

The impression I get between us now and us when we were good in the league is it feels high risk, low reward. Before it was high risk, high reward.

Teams know how to play against us and the way to change that is to have a plan B to counter the middle being packed out, which is probably just hit the channels.

I’d say Tielemans and Ramsey have been our best players first half.
Mings and Konsa looking strong, McGinn and Rogers average.
Bailey absolutely needs hooking for Malen, maybe Garcia on for Disasi too.

Is Olsen the worst keeper the Villa have ever had? I'm 55, and can't think of another who was worse. Nylan was bad, but he redeemed himself with his sneaky little manoeuvre v Sheff United.

I stand to be corrected, by some older supporters.

Bunn(y) and Kalinic were worse. Nyland was dreadful too.

Kiraly.

Rogers,  Bailey, Ramsey.  Not one of them good enough
Ramsey's doing ok

Defo, been decent. Rogers and Bailey have been brutal. Defence has settled after an awful start. Tielemans has been very good.

Surely Bailey off at half time. He continues to be awful. Infact him giving the ball away cheaply is Brentford's best attacking option. I hope Digne has a real go at him for taking that free kick.

Rogers is extremely careless with possession. The only time he made a successful pass was the one at the very end of the half and even that was more of a lay off.

Tuesday was exactly the same but he got away with that terrible performance because of the uncredited own goal assist.

Rogers has said multiple times that Unai encourages him to try things, it seems like he's the one player given a bit of freedom to try the risky pass - it's just not working today.  Shame we don't have Asensio to come on take that place off the forwards.

Precisely, and just his momentum and the Brentford player's brought them together. Sensible VAR

How on earth could they tell when the ball was passed to Ollie?

always my gripe with these VAR things
Same here. It's a guess. Who decides what frame to look at? Each frame is 1/100th of a second and it makes all the difference which one they use.

Dirty c**t. That's a leg-breaker if Youri has his foot planted.

Did we expect anything more than a hard, narrow win? Game like this was always going to just be result, result, result

On the road, backup keeper, no Asensio.  Well done - 3 pts.

Said it loads of times.  Brentford are a very dirty team, and they get away with it.

The sun has been out today, and we have the return of the lesser spotted clean sheet!

Malen doesn't look happy at all and I don't blame him. I think we've done him.

You can hardly blame him for being pissed off. Whether he's played on the right or centre forward, he's looked great and more importantly, makes things happen. He can hold a ball up, has great technique, not sure what goes on sometimes in Unai's head.

If they equalize it will be on Watkins.  That miss and the offside for the disallowed goal.

We won. Because of Watkins.

Correct.  We also didn’t score a second because of him and then were under the cosh for the last 30 minutes.  Both things can be true.
