Pity Kamara isn't starting, but it's not a surprise with how Unai integrates injured players - he can come on when we are 4-0 up!

I'm assuming the thought is Rogers got a hat trick running through the middle in the last CL match, and Asensio can be subbed in later when needed.

Strong team.  However, I am surprised he has taken a chance on Bailey though.

It will be a tough game but I take us to prevail over 2 legs.

Come on you Lions!!!

So three CB s and Cash on the bench away from home. I think that is a good choice. Pleased to see Pau on the bench.

A little bit exposed in the midfield I fear.

Hope we can attack from the off. I think Brugge will be delighted to see Ascensio on the bench.

Would have started Kamara just for some extra protection of the defence, not to mention all the workload McGinn and Tielemans have got through.

Just go for it Villa.  Player for player we are better than them.  Win the duels and this will be relatively (to playing better teams we've also beaten this year) easy I reckon.

I still find it sad / a shame no Malen in Euro squad. That’s a Bench that midfield /defence is strong, but little attack wise.

I’d have also started Asensio. And surprised as Bailey.

But in Emery we trust.

1-1.

Bailey must pay for Unai's sandwiches everyday because he keeps getting starts even after very average performances , lets hope he doesnt leave the ball behind when he beats someone , or falls over and get  afew good final balls in .

Asesnio with all his chumps lwague experience and 4 goasl in 2 starts on bench a bit suprised too especially when he is working so well with Mr. Rashford at the moment .

Ill take  a draw .

Very nervous for this. Keeping it tight seems an impossibility for Villa so maybe we just have to go for it over both legs. Remember we were 2-0 and cruising over Celtic and yet still managed to let them back in the game. So it's got to be attack, attack, attack...

Sometimes you can argue that the conceding on first chance stat could indicate we have managed to stop them even getting a chance up until then, and for some of the late half / second half ones it might stand. But too many are simply early in the game and just an exposure of poor defending.

I don't think we were "miles better" than them. If anything they shaded it for me. Brilliant save off Emi to keep it level. These are dangerous and very determined. We just need to get Ollie/Rashford on the ball more. And Ollie needs to put his boots on the right feet. Some of his passing has been very poor.

I'd be relatively happy if it finished 1-1 but right now I feel a little unsatisfied. I thin we've pushed the final pass at times, giving them the opportunity to break quickly.

I'd be content in the 2nd half with having a ton of possession, 'aimlessly' passing it around as they defend in front of the box.

On the money Edge - Watkins has been poor all round tonight. Don’t think he’s managed to lay it off to a single Villa player so far from what I can remember.
Very tight nervy game, hopefully we can come back to Villa Park with at least a draw under our belt.
Feels like a game where Marco could come on and give us a bit of that magic the last incumbent kept harking on about.
Also, the amount of times Rashford has been ready to race forward only for the defenders to switch it to the right wing. He’s going to dine well when Pau is back in the side.

what the fuck? If the keeper goes the right way and still gets nowhere near it it's a brilliantly taken pen, no idea how you could see it any other way.

It’s a sad day when you realise this, but watching Marco Asensio I feel like the chance for me to play as a winger at Aston Villa may never come. I just think he’s a bit better at football than me.

If Mings doesn’t get that touch to divert the ball wide off that header, it’s a different game.

And quite right too!

I'm seeing any away wins as preparation for Preston away from now on. Feel for any own-goal scorer, though, in any game.

Final whistle: well done lads!

The game was decided by 2 defensive moments, Mings at risk of putting into his own net trying to clear pulls off a spectacular goal line clearance, their guy desperate to cut out a very good cross couldn't match it and put into the top corner.

We rode our luck, but who cares.

The changes that Unai made did the job.

He put Kamara at RB.
Pushed Cash forward and both the cross for the OG and the pen came down our right.

Never doubt Unai.
