Title: Aston Villa v Yr Adar Gleision (FA Cup 5th Rd) Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Brazilian Villain on February 26, 2025, 01:43:02 PM
After last night's disappointment, it represents an excellent opportunity to make it through to the quarter-finals.

3-1 home win and an upturn in the collective mood.

UE needs to rotate to the max he can here, I feel. Wouldn't mind if everyone on the subs bench last night (Zych excepted) started

3-0 (yes, I know, -0, whacky aren't I?)

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a few players starting that we'd consider to be more 'squad' than 'first team'.

I think Emery has had a change of heart where the FA Cup is concerned and that would explain some odd decisions last night, he definitely had Friday on his mind.

So following that logic I see a strong team and much better showing, out of form players such as Bailey don't deserve a place and a back four is required, no fucking about with formation.

......the Manager may have his mind on Tuesday though....oh ffs!

3-1

Id probably go with this. Massive game really given the opportunity it provides. I think theres pretty much no doubt Olsen will be in goals, which always makes me nervous. Cardiff will be well up for it, which also makes me nervous, we need the first goal which we often find difficult.

Anyway i think its difficult for Unai to pick a really weakened side these days.

Olsen (presuming Emi’s not fit)
Garcia
Konsa
Mings
Maatsen
Bogarde
Tielemans
Asensio
Rashford
Malen
Bailey

They will still score with their first shot.

Exactly what I think it will be, shame we can't give McGinn a rest but there are not many other options, other than Ramsey in centre mid, but I've never seen anyone play him there before.

Olsen
Garcia Konsa Mings Maatsen

Can't ever see us keeping a clean sheet ever again.

Callum Robinson to score with their first shot.
El Ghazi to get a round of applause.

Garcia and Maken are sure to start as they can’t play in Brugge.

If Martinez is out I’d go Zych in goal, putting Olsen in just kills the crowd - obviously won’t happen but that is what I would like to see….

My side would be;

Zych
Garcia Konsa Mings Digne
Bogarde Teilemans
Malen Rashford Ramsey
Watkins

Likes of Maatsen, McGinn, Rogers, Bailey, Barkley amongst subs but would like to see Jimoh-Aloba & perhaps Broggio and Borland on the bench too and Jimoh- Aloba actually get on after half a dozen bench appearances

Demitri I fully expect your Mount Olympus rage if we lose to academy players. I will sit back and enjoy!

But I do think we have the best chance to get silverware this year in the FA cup as opposed to winning Fuck All. Let’s do it as I am in the generation of only seeing 2 league cups. That was 29 years ago. We should be winning more silverware if only to shut the rags up a bit. No chance in the European Cup really so let’s go for it tomorrow

Ramsey would seem to have the ability to take the ball under pressure and turn and pass so in that aspect you'd it might be worth trying him in that role, the tactical discipline would be more of an issue.

You can upgrade on the night at any of the ticket offices and just pay the difference. Or gamble on them not being able to check in any way at the turnstile.

Great news, guys.

I've just won 560 quid from a 20 quid stake at 28/1.

I've had Cardiff winning at half time, and draw at full time.

I think we'll squeak past them unconvincingly, in half time or even worse, on penalties.

There's no way they don't score first.

Unless they're playing a front three of: The Ashes of Stephen Hawking - Jordan Bowery - That Blind Bloke off Strictly

Just done my bit - I rarely win when betting. Put a tenner on Cardiff to qualify at 8/1.

Quarters here we come!

Regarding Emery's comments about not being contenders for the FA Cup, I tend to look at it this way:

Would you go into your yearly review with your boss saying everything is going to be extremely easy to achieve?

Really?  That's mad isn't it!  'Magic of the cup' in short supply since the 80s then.  Maybe that is another reason (on top of the obsession with the PL in recent history) that a lot of fans have become progressively less bothered about it.  Actually, I'm probably staying the bleeding obvious there, but that is a telling stat for sure.

Be interesting to see.

2-0  to us. Happy memories of Boxing Day 1968  (goals from Hole and Tiler). An amazing day...Tommy Doc's first game in charge and over 40,000 there to witness what many regard as the route back to greatness.

On the plus side that second half effort should have eliminated any potential complacency. We really need a backlash and actually if the backlash is relative to the level of abysmalness from the other night it should last until the end of the season.

For someone born in 1959, i.e me, to have never seen my team win the FA Cup is insane.  I m really not sure now I’m going to feel if and when we  finally win it, but I will raise a toast to my old man who was there in ‘57

Loooing at the u21 side about to play Everton in 5 mins (live on Villa TV if you have a subscription) you can probs assume Jimoh-Aloba and perhaps Broggio and Kerr Smith if they are fit at the moment will be in the first team wider squad for tonight

What will a SAOT decision visual look like?

Once the decision is made – a decision visual will be sent to broadcast, giant screens in stadiums and shared on the @PLMatchCentre X account.

This will feature a 3D virtual replay of the relevant players identifiable by each team’s kit.

An offside decision will be shown with a red line and onside with a green line. A white vertical wall will represent the offside line, with a blue "pulse" on the defender’s relevant body part.

When an attacker is offside, the part of their body which is offside will appear through the white wall and be outlined in red.

The final image in the virtual replay will be on an angle, off-centre, to provide a clear view of the attacker and defender involved in the offside review and the "pulse" will no longer be displayed.

Without looking I'd say Portsmouth 2008, Wigan 2012, Leicester 2020, Everton 1995.

so the Sky 6 are: Arsenal, Man Utd , Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool and is it Spurs the other ?

I see Leicester City won it with Tielemans but they were a top 6 team then ?

When we last won the cup man city were on 3 wins, arsenal 3, m united 2, tottenham 1, chelsea 0 and liverpool 0. Now they are on 7, 14, 13, 8, 8 and 8. So 49 wins between them since we last won it.

What sort of team are Cardiff prepared to put out this evening giving their league predicament?

I think on Villa side of things expect a few changes and rest and rotating.

In all competitions, Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last 15 home games against Cardiff City (W13 D2), winning the last seven in a row. Cardiff’s last Villa Park win came back in December 1954.

Heading to England for the weekend, but flight delayed so not going to be home for kickoff. Hopefully we are winning by the time I get back for the second half.

This should be a comfortable win and one to sweep away the gloom ahead of a great end to a stop start season.

Callum Robinson will always be a Villa man and given a different set of circumstances would have made himself a consistent top level starter at Premier League level.
Hasn’t worked out for him on that stage but I always felt he puts in effort.
