4 minutes. That’s at Anfield it’s 10.
-
Can't get going at all this season.
-
Fire away. Just shit. Peace out
-
We ain't getting top 5
-
If we continue to miss pretty much open goals this is what will continue to happen.
-
Nowhere near good enough. This approach of playing very slowly and then trying to up the tempo at the end just isn’t working. Dreadful result.
-
League form this year is so inconsistent.
-
Concede every game you won't win on a regular basis. Ipswich are shit and have scored 3 against us.
-
Draw which feels like a defeat . Their keeper did well .
Garcia my MOTM
-
Going to be one of those seasons now, league-wise.
You know it's not going to happen when a bug eyed ex Baggie reserve keeper has the game of his life against you.
-
May as well concentrate on the Cups.
-
We seem to not turn up against teams we should be beating. Pretty bad habit.
-
So disappointing to have so much of the ball and so much control with so little to show for it. Feels like a loss.
-
May as well concentrate on the Cups.
I agree with you..
-
Unless we beat liverpool dont see how ee finish top 5. We blew it
-
Fours sitters missed by my count.
I don’t think we were bad, but the finishing was awful. And the Ipswich goal was terrible from us.
-

Our walking football + an organised team that presses our midfielders and defence = a bad day at the office.
I didn't see the Ipswich goal. How on earth did we manage to let them score? From what i saw at the end of the first half there was no way I could conceive we'd concede, not even us.
Anyway, Rashford looked promising. And shame Asensio skied that good chance he had.
-
Such a shit, arrogant performance. Fair play to the Ipshitters.
-
Our set pieces especially corners are pretty abysmal , what is Macphee bringing to the table
-
4 without a win in the league, which includes games against the sides 16th, 17th and 18th.
-
Another 2 points dropped against shit opposition.
We’re still toothless against teams that park the bus, and the back 4 let us down again…if we don’t concede we more than likely win today. Our inability to keep a clean sheet is killing us this season.
-
With Newcastle and Chelsea both losing, that's a terrible loss.
That, plus the other points we've thrown away at home.
-
So when is this much-predicted funeralling of an opposition team actually going to happen?
This is a poor result in the context of an afternoon when our goal difference should now be comfortably back in the positive.
-
We had our chance and blew it big time. Such a frustrating season.
-
Fair play to Ipswich. Defended really well and deserved the point. We simply didn't do enough to win it
-
We're capable of dominating teams, but we don't start playing until we concede. It's been the problem all season long, and it's starting to get really fucking annoying.
It's the reason we're not currently competing with likes of Liverpool. They are generally on it from kick off and maintain the intensity for most of the game. And they're not all blowing out of their arses with an hour gone.
Either we're approaching games deliberately killing the pace, or we have a general fitness issue. Either way, it needs addressing pronto.
-
Same story all season. Every game is 50/50, so results are 50/50. I think we've been found out and need to tweak our style. Works in Europe because they're less familiar, but everyone in the league (apart from Spurs, mate) knows now to play against us now. We can't dominate like we did last season.
For the first time under Emery I think we're under performing against the quality of player in the squad.
-
We typically do better in open games, but struggle when things are tighter or more physical like today. I agree with other posters that our slow, lethargic build-up does us few, if any, favours. I do like the look of Rashford, Malen and especially Asensio though.
-
4 without a win in the league, which includes games against the sides 16th, 17th and 18th.
Yep. Any talk of top five should've been in the bin weeks ago. It's definitely done now. We're into miracle territory.

No quite - we’re not going to get out of midtable and we don’t deserve to.
-
Too many home draws is really the main story behind our "formidable home form".
Too many games played in fits and starts, rubbish goals given away and too many missed chances. Start the new lads up front from beginning and I think we'd have been comfortable instead of scrabbling for a late equaliser/winner.
Last 20 league games W 6 D 8 L 6

My point is that in the game a few days ago they gave us the freedom of the centre of the pitch and were cut to pieces. I think you probably knew that.

TBH it shouldn't as we should now been 3rd on 45 points and coasting. The fact we are not is why CL qualification is being thrown away.
-
Not bothered on the league now. Lets focus on the cups mainly the fa cup.
If we can get europa we can maybe focus on winning that next season and get in CL via that route if we faith to get top 5
-
Teams that drop four points to Ipswich don't get into the Champions League.
-
We ain't getting top 5
We ain’t getting top 8
-
It was a poor performance but a terrible result given we played for so long agasint 10 men. Even though we were poor we still contrived to miss 4 sitters.
Mings is a problem for our general play. He slows everything down and has far too many touches. We are twice the tean when we play it quickly through the lines.
Tielemans was poor and please get him off set pieces.
Rogers had his quietest game for some time.
Our 2nd half subs improved us with Rashford especially looking a threat.

Just from watching us. These results are going to happen. We're not good enough for that this season.
-
100% correct sexual ealing
-
Beat Liverpool and we’re still par for these two games. Big ask but not beyond us.
-
Finish ninth this season and then mount a strong challenge for the title next season without european distraction.
After today's performance, that must be our plan. >:(
-
We are the only team in the top 10 with a negative Goal Difference.
Our GD deficit with Liverpool is 38.
-
We are the only team in the top 10 with a negative Goal Difference.
Our GD deficit with Liverpool is 38.
Add that and that we miss too many chances is the reason we are where we are in the league
-
Seems sometimes we're trying to walk the ball into the net rather than shooting when the clear opportunity arises. Very frustrating at times, although the new signings all have something different to offer. I do think we're looking at a UEFA or Conference League campaign next year.
-
We've massively overrated what this squad of players are capable of
-
For a long time under Emery we never drew, like it rarely happened. I loved that, cos for too many years of my Villa-supporting life we've been boring and had too many stalemates at VP (Gregory, O'Neill, McLeish etc.)
If you're drawing half of your home matches, chances are you'll be midtable unless your away form can make up for it which ours can't.
We just can't keep the back door shut. I think we do have enough creativity and firepower now to make chances against 10 men behind the ball - the last 20 minutes showed that so that's encouraging but we need to be more dynamic earlier.
Ironic that JJ in his interview after Spurs last week, was talking about the starters having to up their game now that we've added strong January signings - and today he is promptly hooked at half time! As much as I love him, it was the right call. We need more from him.
-
Walking pace shit again.
-
Missing golden chances and always gift the opposition a goal means mid table at best. We are so better than that which makes it even more frustrating.
-

Particularly after last week's showing followed by a free week to prepare. Smacks of complacency - "it's only Ipswich".
-
Personally think youri should have been subbed not JJ. Youri was utter pants today
-
It was like watching 90s England trying to break down Andorra until Asensio came on and started doing something revolutionary called passing and fucking moving.
I think I'm in love with him already.
-
Good:
Garcia
Rashford
Asensio
Overall going forward performance
Bad;
Finishing
Corners
Defensive concentration for a couple of seconds
Yet another goalkeeper that turns into Lev Yashin
-
Personally think youri should have been subbed not JJ. Youri was utter pants today
Agree Tielemans had a poor game , thought Ramsey was doing ok great run to get the guy red carded
-
Just our luck that they change their goalies for this game. Their usual fella is utter pants. We would have won with him in.
-
Garcia looks the real deal👍
-
Another wasted opportunity to close the ground. Not sure how many more we’ll get this season.
-
Far far too slow a tempo in that second half. Pitch looked a bit sticky on tv. Miracle save at the end but massive opportunity missed. Brilliant finish by Delap
-
Garcia looks the real deal👍
As does Malen, he works really hard, makes things happen and technically is surprisingly very good.
-
In the CL last 16, still in the Cup, 8th in the league.
Swop that for beating Ipswich? Nah.
We were still shit though.
-
9th
-

Well said. As frustrating as that undoubtedly was, it’s not the end of the world. Yet.
Need to beat Liverpool and weirdly, that might be easier for us tha beating relegation bus parkers. Got to take the chances we create though .
Their goalie was like peak Gordon Banks. At least 3 worked class saves. And we missed our usual 2 or 3 easy ones. On another day that’s 5-0.
The only negative thing aside from the profligate finishing was how we defended their goal. Didn’t stop the cross for the 10th time and 3 defenders undone by that scrote up front.
-
On the flip side, if we finish 9th and go out in the QF of both cups it could have an impact on players that stay or want to join us as well as who we can afford to keep/buy.
-
Frustrating result, especially given results elsewhere. Failure to keep a clean sheet has been costly again. Didn't think the performance was too bad on the whole and we created enough to win the game.
Not that we should be relying on injury time against a 10-man Ipswich, but how on earth did they only come up with 4 minutes after their keeper's antics?
-
We aren’t going to finish 9th. 6th at worst I reckon. Whether that’ll be enough to keep our better players who knows.
Kamara is key. Fingers crossed.
-
We didn’t get going and conceded the usual terrible goal.
We didn’t move the ball quickly enough and didn’t create enough. Lacklustre all over the pitch. That top 5 isn’t going to come this season.
-
We're 9th after 25 and have won 3 of the last 10 and can't keep a clean sheet. We're not playing like a side that will finish top 6.
-
Cardinal sin conceding vs 10 men, gives them more to cling onto and puts more pressure on the forwards. So frustrating. Too many off the pace today and I thought they wanted it more.
It was another piss poor atmosphere for a league game too, I can’t imagine that helps matters.
-
More irritated with the goal against. Otherwise we win 1-0 with some great saves by Palmer. Kamara injury could really tank our season.
-
any news on Kamara ?
-
any news on Kamara ?
Looked like a hamstring to me. They were debating if he was going to come off or not so hopefully just precautionary.
-
any news on Kamara ?
According to BBC, Emery said “It’s bad but I don’t know now”
-
We did play ok, just about as others have said but this against a team in the relegation zone and playing with 10 men for an hour. Not too much to get excited about.
-
asensio needs staring soon , he was fantastic other than his chance but hes just quality and loved Rashford beating his man , just gets you on your seat , kinda thing you are desperate for Leon to do . Malen looks good too .
agree with a free posters Youri was very under par as was Rogers .
Garcia looks another bargain .
very frustarting today , Watkins scores first half , its probably 5 0 , just didnt get going till Asensio came on , was all pedestrian and slow in second gear too may short passes back and front and the corners was terrible , must have had 15 at least , big players in the box but no one putting the ball in.
it wasnt as bad as Man Utd performance as their goalie made that great save near end but took too long to get going. .
Dropped 4 points to Ipswich .
-
Being a CB for Villa is more dangerous than being the drummer for Spinal Tap.
-
Not doing hindsight and really like Ollie but a natural goal scorer would have seen us win this.
-
Now Townley quoting Emery: “I don't know now but I think it is not a lot." 🤷♂️
-
Cold, tired, disappointed.
Forms far from great in the league, but we are only 5 points off 5th. So all still to play for.
-
Just read Ollie is now our leading Villa Park scorer in the Premier League era. He's nearly got Gabbys record.
-
I know the defence has had to change a lot this season, but the inevitability of conceding a goal, no matter the opposition or now seemingly whether we are playing against 10, is proving a real problem.
Added to that is missing the big chances yet again at key moments.
Martínez, Kamara and Digne set the tone for slow play from the start today. I have no idea why we don't play to our real strength more often, which is playing on the front foot rather than the slow build up.
-
Dunno if Duran would’ve helped. I think Duran would’ve scored the one Ollie missed, but not been in position for the one Ollie scored.
-
Being a CB for Villa is more dangerous than being the drummer for Spinal Tap.
Yes expecting to see one of our CB’s spontaneously combust against Liverpool
-
-
Think we will see Rashford and ascensio from the start Wednesday , cannot afford to keep dropping points .
-
I’ll guarantee everyone that the Ipswich keeper turns back into the Cinderella the tramp next game. Likely a 5-0 battering and two through his legs. Time and again average keepers roll into Villa and become the next coming of Gordon Banks.
-
Tielemans has 1 goal and 4 assists from 25 games. That is a problem for us.
-
Think we will see Rashford and ascensio from the start Wednesday , cannot afford to keep dropping points .
If we perform like that against liverpool they will trounce us. One point against Ipswich and wolves is simply not good enough . Even worse when you consider Ipswich had 10 men
-
Thought Garcia played very well though. Looks a great prospect, be amazed if he's not the number one rb after a good pre season in him.
-
Such a disappointing result and performance.
A complete lack of energy, pace and incision all over.
A couple of things stood out for me.
I love Mings. He has been absolute stalwart for us, and is still one of the best defenders at the club.
But, he slows the game down too much, far too much.
Pissing about, taking an age to move the ball 25 yards up,the pitch allows the opposition to get everyone back in position, behind the ball.
Our midfield are then left trying to pass through a packed final third. Packed with defenders and our forward players.
Because everything is so condensed, there is no where to go when the ball is passed.
It was noticeable how today our players were passing the ball, and then standing watching rather than making runs off the ball, because there was nowhere to go.
So that just slowed everything down to walking pace and complete stifled us.
That stems from defence, but also from the sideline. Surely Unai should have been telling the players to move the ball quicker and stretch the game ?
To be so fucking pedestrian and lacking in energy after having a week off, is criminal.
-
That is one of the reasons Pau is so important to us, his range of passing helps a lot with our forward play.
-
Not doing hindsight and really like Ollie but a natural goal scorer would have seen us win this.
Agreed
-
Poor defensive effort to let that goal in. Three defenders and Emi.
Midfield static. Space for Roger’s disappeared after the sending off. Cameos from Rashford and Asensio but I do wonder if they are starters.
Not sure how Watkins missed the st chance so badly first half.
Probably a poor decision to take Digne off.
I will never understand the people who leave early. 1-1 today and they all exit at the usual point,
-
Tielemans has 1 goal and 4 assists from 25 games. That is a problem for us.
We massively overrate him as a fan base
-
Bearing in mind he takes a lot of set pieces as well it’s a really poor level of output.
-
Play like that and Liverpool will rip uas a new one.
-
Fucking hell.
Yes, it was frustrating, annoying but it isn't indicative of our season really is it?
I'm still enjoying every minute and I think we'll take the game to them on Weds.
-
4 minutes extra time , WTF.
-
Microcosm of the league season really, we have made hard work of everything. A lack of clean sheets combined with profligacy in front of goal and general sloppiness has stopped us kicking on. Two points from three games against West Ham and Ipswich at home plus Wolves away is rubbish.
I understand the optimism of people who point at us still only being five points from the top five but other teams look far better than us and we can't string any results together to close the gap.
Now we have Malen, Asensio and Rashford, we should be able to give Rogers the rest he needs once in a while. All the new boys look good, which is at least promising. Although Disasi got done for their goal.
-
The ref showboating, pointing at his watch 5 or 6 times…
We had the keeper down for 2 mins, 2 goals, VAR check on our goal, 3 or 4 sets of subs, players ambling off the pitch and loads of (understandable) time wasting.
Ridiculous.
-
Like others I’m really frustrated by our slow play. I think it is Emery’s way of managing fatigue as no mater who is playing our tempo is consistently slow. Also once they were down to 10 men we had the chance to wear them out but didn’t up our game until we were behind. This also has a massive effect on the atmosphere as it is hard to get excited when Mings, Martinez and Disasi are seeing who can keep the ball the longest.
Maatsen is a good threat moving forward but he should never have allot the cross to come in for their goal. I haven’t seen it back but Selap seemed to be more alert than Mings and Disasi which is piss poor - similar to the Leicester equaliser last month.
Up front I don’t think we got behind them enough or moved them out of position with our own movement. I was in the Upper Trinity today towards the Holte so had a good view of our overall play and we had few occasions where we pulled them out of a comfortable shape.
Extra finishing practice for all of them tomorrow. Their keeper made some good saves but our shooting is poor and we often dally before firing in a shot allowing the keeper to set himself.
-

The ref was awful.
And yes, he appeared to love being front and centre.
-

Harsh, he’s been playing in positions which will not influence games as much as maybe he could without the maestro Kamara for the best of this season.
For the best part of 13-16 months in Emery’s reign we had Kamara and Luiz on song playing without missing a game and they were incredible. However Kamara got injured and Dougie lost his mojo….
It’s been a funny season, yes, we’ve played some substandard games, and at times we’ve lost the pazazz from a lot of last season but we’re in the Champions league and still in the cup with possibility of a decent league finish. It’s not all doom and gloom.
Tielemans is fine and has been a very good player for us.
-
When Tielemans is playing in advanced role, and we are zipping the ball around, he’s one of the best.
-

This is true. I said the keepers against us suddenly become Lev Yashin, but in reality we probably flatter them by our shots being saveable.
-
For me this game was lost in the first half, our approach to games all season long is nothing short of reckless, we start games on our backs asleep, why is that? do these players not get prepared for the game, it sets the template for the whole game, lay down the law and the opposition withdraw, you don't do that and they get buoyed, confident and start to attack you, we conceded, after that Ipswich could have gone down to 9 players it would have made no difference.
Positive from the game, if the likes of Ipswich can come to Villa park and come away with a point then we can easily go to Liverpool and get 3.
-
I thought we had enough to push both full backs much further forward and one of the centre halves into midfield in possession as well, I thought we were far too slow and didn't commit players forward fast enough.
Just didn't do enough against a team who only seemed to have one attack, and scored from it.
-

Cheers, meant to say we should beat them at home.
-
Not for the first time this season, we have failed to put to bed a shit side. We have a tendency to put together better performances against better sides. I hope!! Really poor result today.
-
Games like this can happen in a season. Unfortunately it’s a repeat theme this season; concede on first big opportunity, waste countless chances. Despite how close the league is for champions league we’re just not going to take advantage of it. As others have said, best to concentrate on the cup competitions now.
Games like this show how important Torres is to our build up and breaking low blocks.
Rashford showed a lot of quality which will be helpful for us finishing the season.
Their goal keeper will never play as well again in his career.
Only 4 minutes added on was an absolute joke.,
-
We haven't really put a team to the sword at home, we don't really create anywhere near as many chances as you'd think we would looking at the attacking talent we have.
-
And, yet again, when Rogers isn't on song, we lack fluidity and look disjointed going forward.
-
We haven't really put a team to the sword at home, we don't really create anywhere near as many chances as you'd think we would looking at the attacking talent we have.
Because we 'control' the opposition by passing it around the back and giving them chance to get back behind the ball.
-
Thought Ramsey was our best player first half. Some lovely moves from him down the left that should've resulted in goals especially from one himself that he should've buried on half time.
So a real downside of the Rashford loan if it's an either/or. Rogers was totally anonymous by comparison for majority of match and Malen struggled to do much out wide.
Overall two points from West Ham, Wolves and Ipswich is very poor and pretty much ends our top 5 hopes now I'd say as we were winning these games last season.
There was me thinking Unai had finally made us ruthless against ten men and we roll back the years to give a textbook display in how not to play against that number.
I get the conserving energy mentality but we've just had a free week for first time in ages and to win that game today we needed to take far more risks than we did and dare I say go a touch more direct. The chances we created in the first half were simple balls flighted over their backline.
Games like today we're a bit overcoached and that results in a passive atmosphere as the crowd struggle to get involved if we're just passing sideways endlessly 30 yards out when there's only a few minutes left.
I can live with today if it means we're going all in for the FA Cup and we might not have a choice on that in four weeks so this season can still have an exciting finish even if it's the one outcome the hierarchy wouldn't sign up for.
-
Poor defensive effort to let that goal in. Three defenders and Emi.
Much like the entire performance it wasn't great , but for their goal let's not forget how easily Maatsen was skinned . He is shaping into a really weak defender though ok on the front foot.
-
Such a shit, arrogant performance. Fair play to the Ipshitters.
I have thought but I cannot add any further wisdom to this post. Concisely summed up.
-
When Tielemans is playing in advanced role, and we are zipping the ball around, he’s one of the best.
I think luiz at his best is better than youri at his best personally. He does not score enough goals in the league for me.
Luiz was killing it.
-
Fair play to them, they stuck to their game plan even when they went down to ten men. Morgan and McGinn looked way off it for me and their keeper made some very good saves. Just one of them games I'm afraid.
-
Missing golden chances and always gift the opposition a goal means mid table at best. We are so better than that which makes it even more frustrating.
Our league form over the last 12 months suggests we are not so better.

Yes. There was a glaring example of that near the end when almost entire Ipswich team had crossed the halfway line and play was over on our left hand side the ball ended up with Martinez, with Ipswich out of shape Garcia had sprinted up towards their half but Emi instead of quickly releasing it to him hesitated a little and than rolled it 10 yards to Disasi. By the time Disasi played it forward Ipswich were back in shape.
-
Fair play to them, they stuck to their game plan even when they went down to ten men. Morgan and McGinn looked way off it for me and their keeper made some very good saves. Just one of them games I'm afraid.
That's true.
Had a conversation with some Tractor boys on the way back to the carpark and they said the same however when one of them asked me if I thought it was a correct sending off I said yes as two yellows were justified and it wasn't a straight red in which case he would have a point. He didn't get that till one of his mate said the same thing.
-
We need to be much faster , the best sides when they turn the ball over move at pace , switching from flank to flank with speed . We just don't move the opposition quickly enough in games like this.
Ironically I think the Liverpool and Chelsea games might suit us better as those teams will attack us leaving more gaps .
-
Unai bollocks them for trying quick breaks… if the opposition is out of shape then so are we, which is a massive problem for Unai.
-

Must've had a bit too much cider in the away end if he missed the ref showing Axel the two yellows. Was as clear a second yellow as you can get.
-
Terrible defending for their goal. We had three defenders against one, and yet he still manages to score. On the other hand I don't think we were as bad as some make out. We absolutely battered them and their keeper had the game of his life. Just one of those days I'm afraid. Poor defending though! Very poor!
-

We absolutely battered them and their keeper had the game of his life. Just one of those days I'm afraid. Poor defending though! Very poor!
It starts with Maatsen getting skinned . Not good enough.
-
Unai bollocks them for trying quick breaks… if the opposition is out of shape then so are we, which is a massive problem for Unai.
I think we saw that with his reactions towards Garcia all second half.
People moan about Cash constantly coming inside when moving forward with the ball but Garcia was doing exactly the same so this is how Unai wants his RBs to play and it isn't changing.
We've been a touch too precise in our play and now we've stopped winning games it is becoming a problem.
-
It feels like us conceding from 4 shots and only scoring once from 25 is very representative of our issues this season.
-

It does and it’s very frustrating as although we haven’t been at our best we’ve made lots of promising attacks and either made the wrong choice or not taken our chances and been picked apart at the back far too easily.
-
I hope ipswich stay up. A fraction of a budget yet we couldnt beat them in either game. Credit to them
-
What is so irritating is we create all these chances while playing so poorly. Is it that we simply do not have a goo enough strike force?

I'm starting to think the unthinkable that maybe we should cash in on Ollie during the summer.

Other key players will likely be off too if we don't start getting our shit together.
-
Too much control; too little intensity.
We have players to hurt teams and yet we continually slow round down and not press home the advantages we create.
Rogers was rubbish.
-

It looks that way. When we win the ball we tend to look for a backwards pass which kills any counter attack.
-

We need a clinical finisher , like a prime Vardy or Owen. Players who win games with a single chance .
-

All strikers miss chances, this season he has missed too many match winning chances.
Today was a case in point.

I am more than starting to think it, I absolutely think we should.
Someone will offer us stupid money for him for the last time this summer, he's nudging 30.
We've had his best years, cash in, move on.
-
Pretty sure he will go to Arsenal in the summer anyway . Wheels in motion I reckon.
-
I thought it was a given.
Unai said something along the lines of the Club has been very good to him and now it’s time for him to be good to the Club in the winter window.
I took that to mean please don’t go now but we will let you go in the summer.
Personally I’d prefer it if we didn’t sell our best players. Brings back memories of the long list of player sold being read out to Doug at AGMs!
-

Doug sold them to make money. We should be looking for an upgrade on Watkins.
-
I’ll guarantee everyone that the Ipswich keeper turns back into the Cinderella the tramp next game. Likely a 5-0 battering and two through his legs. Time and again average keepers roll into Villa and become the next coming of Gordon Banks.
if you put the ball where a half decent keeper expects it to go then he'll save it. Our finishing has been dreadful this season, hence the awful goal difference.

Given PSR and what happened with selling Luiz and over paying for Onana I’d fear for that approach!

Said the same earlier. He scores a few but bloody hell he misses some sitters on a regular basis as the stats prove. £50m to the Arse
-
I’d definitely move Ollie on in the summer too, and I think we will. Way too many missed chances this season, and I think he’s peaked. Cash in.
-
Easy to say sell Ollie and just get an upgrade. Who would they be and how much would they cost? Anyone with a better record than him in the PL would be outside of our budget, so we'd be taking a gamble on someone in a different league.
Personally, and I know he's not an out and out striker but he has played there and he's possibly a better finisher than Ollie - I would break the bank for Bowen. He's the only spark in an awful West Ham side and is surely getting pissed off at a club going nowhere.
His Dad's Villa, tap him up and let's try a reverse Durán, hopefully Jarrod hands in a transfer request. I'd have him ahead of Malen and Rashford.
-
We struggle against poorer sides because they come to defend, the pace we play at gives them every advantage. By the time our back line gets themselves in order you could make a cup of tea. It is so obvious but nothing changes, when we were flying we were all attack, it was fast exciting football now we seem to play not to lose and very easy to defend against.
I wanted Ollie off at half time and revert to the forward line of last week, he is missing too many now, he has been a good servant but his easy misses this season has cost us, if had taken that easy chance early we would have gone on to win comfortably. Our two best players were the new boys and they need to start.
-
The amount of big chances we create we just need a better finisher . Watkins is a 1 in 4 big chances guy, we need a 1 in 2 .
-
Sexual will be getting a semi reading these.
-
When Tielemans is playing in advanced role, and we are zipping the ball around, he’s one of the best.
I think luiz at his best is better than youri at his best personally. He does not score enough goals in the league for me.
Luiz was killing it.
Not in the second half of the season he wasnt , he was a passenger and a burden.
-
It wasn't half the season, he was still playing well til March when he had some wobbles.
-
How much would an upgrade on Ollie cost ?
Who would that be ?
And if it’s that simple, why wouldn’t Arse go for that person rather than Ollie.
-

I don’t think that’s necessarily the only way to look at it.
Firstly, you’re assuming that we’d be looking to buy a like for like player with Ollie’s profile. That may not be ultimately what Emery wants either now or to evolve the side to.
Then, have to consider that in our position, we’re not going to be sinking £60/70 odd million we may get for Ollie on a direct replacement. That’s not how Monchi operates. We’d be looking at a younger player, or someone who is damaged goods elsewhere, probably outside of the EPL that we’d take a chance on becoming as good or better than Watkins. Arsenal are not operating in our market, certainly not in January. They are looking for a guaranteed, EPL experienced striker that can plug straight into their side.
Another thing Emery and co will undoubtedly be considering is when is the right time to sell a player and what other options does selling that player open up? Wenger back in the day use to be the master at selling players when Arsenal had seen the best of them. I think it’s arguably true that we’ve probably already had the best of Watkins.
-
Emery has a point when he says we are still in the building phase, we have come so far so fast, the problem is we have the likes of Rashford joining us because we have the attraction of European football, if we miss this season it will again get harder to attract better players. He took JJ off yesterday which I found puzzling as he seemed to be the one getting past defenders. I know we have big games coming up but three points from yesterday has no less merit on the ladder than beating Liverpool.
-

We need a clinical finisher , like a prime Vardy or Owen. Players who win games with a single chance .
Shoot, if only we had one of those in our squad who was young, pacy, and scored at the same rate per 90 as Erling Haaland! Well, at least those are easy to find.
-
Watkins will definitely be off in the summer and it will suit both him and the club. But I don’t think we’ll get mega bucks.
-

He is now playing in Saudi.
-
It’s worth rephrasing that, he’d prefer to play in Saudi than in the PL.
I missed the last 15 minutes, did we miss any big chances? Before that, Watkins had one and Rogers had two half chances at the near post. Generally, however, we didn’t create much. Is that how it carried on?
-
Well the keeper made some good saves in the last 15 or so..Asensio and then the rebound after Rashford's run right at the end
-
we lack a clinical finisher - Watkins scores enough,, but it's a good job we create him 4 good chances a game. We miss a top top level one, but without constant CL football we won't get one.
-
Watkins will definitely be off in the summer and it will suit both him and the club. But I don’t think we’ll get mega bucks.
If arsenal bid 50m (which i doubt they will) i would sell him. He scores goals but misses too many chances as well. Far too many. At 29 as well you would imagine he will only start declining.
But the biggest investment we need to make is some bloody defenders that can defeneld. Unpopular but i would consider selling onana if we can get close to what we paid for him. He is just never fit and we dont need that here
-
we either sell Watkins this summer, or he stays till the end.
-
I know we weren’t brilliant and they only had ten men but fuck me, their keeper made some unbelievable saves to stop us winning the game comfortably.
-
Personally looking forward to us suddenly willing to shell out the £80-100m it’ll take to get a better striker than Watkins.
I also think we’ll sell him for PSR reasons, but it’ll be a backwards step rather than something I’ll be happy about.
-
we either sell Watkins this summer, or he stays till the end.
Yep. If he stays then we can gamble on some youngsters for a year or two knowing with have the insurance of Watkins.

Ascensio put a great chance over the bar , he really should have scored.
-
Ipswich kettled the game a lot, interestingly switching wings every so often as a unit to do it. Which, a man down away to the team ten places above you, is absolutely fair enough. We just didn't have the nous to break it down
-

We broke it down enough times but were let down by wasteful finishing. Without ever playing particularly well we should have won the game comfortably. It’s happened to often this season.
-
Whether we decide to cash in on Watkins or not in the summer, I’m not sure he’s really to blame for not winning yesterday. He had two good chances and scored one of them. I think Asensios chance was a better one than the chance Ollie missed. Watkins also did really well to set Rogers up at the end of the 1st half, great save but Rogers has to bury that.
I think there is a lot of writing our chances of Europe off in mid-Feb, which seems very premature and just as much based on all the teams above us maintaining better form than us for the next few months, which isn’t a given. Saying that other than Man City, our wins at home have come against, Southampton, Wolves, Everton, Brentford, Leicester. We are going to have to up our game with Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, Forest and Fulham to come to Villa Park.
-
Seems sometimes we're trying to walk the ball into the net rather than shooting when the clear opportunity arises. Very frustrating at times, although the new signings all have something different to offer. I do think we're looking at a UEFA or Conference League campaign next year.
There was nothing to aim at because of the amount of bodies they had protecting the goals and blocking pretty much everything we tried which was very frustrating. When we did manage to get a shot on target there was an ex albion reserve keeper who turned into prime Lev Yashin for the day. We did manage to carve out some clear chances but once again they went begging. It's what has defined our our season.
-
We're currently looking at no Europe next season. You get nothing for 9th. Our current form isn't good enough to move us up either. There needs to be a change, both play style and defensively we are still off.
-
We really are careless with our chances, the last two games we’ve carved out some excellent opportunities. Rogers, Ramsey, Watkins and Asensio should really have a goal or two to their name. It’s been like this all season. Last season they were flying in.
That and letting opponents score from so few chances is destroying the league form.
-
Our corners are hopeless. We had enough of them yesterday but they're so predictable to defend.
-

Our free kicks were not much better until Rashford smashed it at the bar.
-
Set pieces were all poor apart from the Rashford/Watkins goal .
Corners were either floaty nothing balls or short ones that lead to nothing. Macphee isn't having much impact this season .

I don't think he's having any impact this season.
-
Aren't we still second or third in most goals from set-pieces in the league? I'm sure I saw a graph showing that recently on MOTD or something, with Arsenal comfortably in front thanks to their penalty-corners.
-
Our corners are hopeless. We had enough of them yesterday but they're so predictable to defend.
We only had 16 no where near enough for us to get a goal
-
Yep, I saw that too eamonn, we are, however I wonder what the statistics are in relation to our conversion rate. It does seem we’re not making the most, but that might just be frustration due to our lack of cutting edge this season in general.
-
How much would an upgrade on Ollie cost ?
Who would that be ?
And if it’s that simple, why wouldn’t Arse go for that person rather than Ollie.
Because Arsenal signed Havertz and Sterling when they could have had Alvarez or Gyokeres. They do stupid stuff. If more evidence is needed they signed Jesus and Zinchenko.
-
A word for the Ipswich fans who I thought were great yesterday. They got right behind their team and their players responded accordingly. I thought we were very quiet throughout and the atmosphere amongst villa fans was a bit like the gloomy weather. The team needed the Holte End to give them a boost yesterday but it just didn't happen. What happened to the booming noise we heard against Celtic? They're gonna need us on Wednesday and Saturday.
-
A disappointing performance, but having said that, we were up against probably the best keeper to have come out of Kidderminster, but fair play to Alex Palmer for his first match in the premier league that was mightily impressive.
The good news is, it looks like we have finally found someone, who looks capable of scoring from free kicks, that was some effort from Marcus, I thought I saw the crossbar shake and brilliant reaction from Ollie to put us level. Despite inconsistent displays at VP, our unbeaten run in the league, now stretches to 12 matches, only Arsenal have a better record. That record is obviously gonna be severely tested on Wednesday, it looks almost certain we'll be without Kamara, which is obviously a big blow.
-
I want our high line, high press, lightening fast attacking Villa back!
This slow and lethargic constant passing back and forth in an arching semi circle around the back four/wingers is doing nothing for the team (*or the Villa Park atmosphere!). A team down to 10 men is going to sit deep and create little space - Our slow paced tactics yesterday played into their hands.
To Ipswich's credit, at not one point did they feel like a team down to 10 men. We failed to make a single shred of the man advantage. A shout out for their fans too - Embarrassed the home crowd.
Next few weeks are going to be critical - The Euro league qualification positions look massively under threat, and with Liverpool and Chelsea up next this week, we could be pretty much dead and buried on that front by next weekend. Our season hinges on the FA Cup and the next round of the Champions League. It's either going to be an amazing ride, or fizzle into disappointment - It's currently on a knife edge.
Not sure if its just me getting older and grumpier, but even though we're being served up the most 'successful' period in recent times, I can't help but feel I'm slowly falling out of love with football. The costs involved, the more affluent 'tourist fans' turning up to games filming every second of the match on their phones displacing years old diehards singing their hearts out for the team, VAR, general modern day football tactics - It's no longer a spectacle to go and watch a football match 'live' imo.
Awaiting season ticket pricing for next season, cos if it's another piss take by Heck, I could be clocking out. I'd be watching on a dodgy fire stick too - Am I fuck contributing a few more quid to Sky and co, the cause of the destruction of our beautiful game.
*But I would absolutely love it, LOVE IT, if we beat Liverpool on Wednesday! 😉
-
Good man Nii!
-

I don't think he's having any impact this season.
He’s doing well defending them I think.
-
Being a CB for Villa is more dangerous than being the drummer for Spinal Tap.
I'm waiting for the bizarre gardening accident now ;): we've seemed to have had every other injury!
Frustrating result to say the least: that's top 4 definitely out now, but fair play to Ipswich: their goalie was terrific!
Wouldn't be surprised by a Rashford goal against Liverpool on Wednesday, though...
-
I've not been to as many Villa games this season as I would have liked, but I attended yesterday.
Some observations:
Maatsen is not a defender. Decent going forwards, but if Digne is on the pitch at the point that cross goes in for their goal, they don't score.
Ramsey was anonymous 1st half and the call to replace him with Rashford was justified.
Tielemans was a passenger for most of the game imo and needs to influence/control games like yesterday's better.
Pushing Rogers to the right to accommodate Asensio doesn't work. Either Asensio plays on the right or replaces Rogers.
Where are the goal contributions coming from if not from the impressive Ollie or Morgan?
Rashford needs to be relieved of corner duties. He needs to be in box where he's a danger.
Their goalie was the difference between the 1-1 scoreline and
the battering that would have come their way had he not been so inspired.
I thought before yesterday 7 points from Ipswich, l'pool and chelsea, would be a good return. 7 points is still on if we can up our game, especially Wednesday.
-

I agree with you, I think they are the best away fans I’ve heard in the league this season. Our support however is t helped by the slow pace of our play and even in The second half we didn’t build up sustained pressure where I thought they would crack.
Their keeper played very well but I would expect most keepers to make the saves he made, with the exception of that last minute save from the deflection which was frustratingly good. Looking at MOTD highlights last night the real sitter was Asensio’s chance as he had time to place his shot.
We’ll need to be a lot better against Liverpool on Wednesday
-
There are games where we don’t play well, or look “off it”, and as disappointing as it is not come away with three points, I think it speaks volumes that the oppo goalie was man of the match.
Another day we win that 4-1. I didn’t think the performance was “that bad”. Not great either, mind, but we’ve played a lot worse recently.
-
The idea that we stand a better chance of winning against Liverpool and Chelsea than we did against Ipswich feels like it's going to lead to some disappointment.
-

Indeed. Particularly against the former, our remarkable ability to concede a very high ratio of goals vs shots is going to be a problem.

Liverpool indeed. Chelsea at the moment not do much, their form isn’t great either, they actually lost to Ipswich a few weeks ago.

Not sure of the logic, and on this day we were held to a draw by 10 men in a relegation battle.
It was poor whichever way you wrap it up.

Step forward Gonçalo Ramos at PSG. The footballing Ollie Watkins. For numerous reasons it hasn't quite worked out for him since leaving Benfica. There was talk of him going on loan to Juventus in the January window but not for sale. I think PSG would bite our hand off if they were to get their £50m back they paid for him. That said it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up at Arsenal.
Champions League football would probably be a requirement though.

Its not that complicated is it really. On another day, a player of Asensios obvious quality, buries the easy chance and probably finishes the one the keeper saves. On another day, Rogers buries that one in the first half, likewise Rashfords cross at the end squirms past the keeper after the deflection.
We didn’t play well, but its bizarre to pretend we didnt dominate that match, in particular the second half.

Yes, we dominated 10 men.
Yes, we carved out and missed many good chances.

We have have far too many of those performances and results at home this season.
And yet another game where we haven given away a shit goal to the oppositions first shot on target.
If we are serious about pushing on and getting higher up the league, we have to do better.
I don’t particularly want to be happy with a 1-1 draw with 10 man Ipswich fucking Town.

At the game yesterday in the first half we were too slow and quite narrow . The times Digne had it then it went back to kamara ! Again second half we were too slow getting to their final third and by the time we did they had everyone back and it is hard to breakdown. Ipswich worked very hard their fans were very vocal if inbred , i hope they stay up

Agree with this 100%. If Hitlers Mom had a headache that night no Hitler. However he was born and was a massive ****** and we could only scrape a draw with an awful Ipswich side. It doesnt fill me with confidence how any team can play us and get something nowadays. I was in the bad day at the office camp but think the office is truly fucked at times now.
Well played Ipswich however as it is nice having them in the league. But how we havent got all 6 points is beyond me and needs sorting as despite what some posters think I cannot see us getting anything from Liverpool or Chelsea unless we work on finishing.

I think I'm right in saying that there have been 5 Saturday 3pm kicks off this season at VP. Bournemouth 1-1, Palace 1-1, Southampton 1-0, Leicester 2-1 and now Ipswich 1-1. All of them have been really poor games, and we've not played well in any of them.
-
There are games where we don’t play well, or look “off it”, and as disappointing as it is not come away with three points, I think it speaks volumes that the oppo goalie was man of the match.
Another day we win that 4-1. I didn’t think the performance was “that bad”. Not great either, mind, but we’ve played a lot worse recently.
On another day we win 4-1 ?
Not sure of the logic, and on this day we were held to a draw by 10 men in a relegation battle.
It was poor whichever way you wrap it up.
And if your aunt had bollocks she’d be your uncle.
Where did anyone say we didn’t dominate the match ?
Or are you just making that bit up.
Yes, we dominated 10 men.
Yes, we carved out and missed many good chances.
We have an abundance of riches up front, but ultimately we failed to beat 10 men, who are in a relegation battle.
We have have far too many of those performances and results at home this season.
And yet another game where we haven given away a shit goal to the oppositions first shot on target.
If we are serious about pushing on and getting higher up the league, we have to do better.

Bad day at the office-the office is truly fucked. Jesus fooking christ, get a grip.
Have you forgotten 2010-to late 2022, were you around in 85-88?
Its turning into a disappointing league season ‘compared’ to the last two since Emery took over, but its not a disaster and what we’ve done on the champions league and hopefully FA cup, still marks progress.
I was as pissed off as anyone coming home from the ground last night, but bit of perspective needed.

Possibly Wolves too was a 3pm Saturday, didn't go to that one.

In terms of a not dissimilar replacement, I think that’s not a bad shout at all.

The lad who scored against us on Saturday would be a decent Ollie replacement should he leave.

Agreed, he reminds me of a young Alan Shearer. Strong as a bull.

No idea Rambo why I need to get a grip. I said at times we look fucked as it’s about inconsistency. Haven’t said it’s a disaster or a write off. But it’s been a great opportunity to establish ourselves and keep our decent players and be in the top 6 but it’s whimpering out.
FYI I was 2 in 1985. Anyway I’m done in this match now. Time for the next one

Comparing a draw with Ipswich to Hitler being born is why I love H&V.

Yes, another good shout. Like the look of Delap.

No worries mate. We are all on the same side. Let’s hope we get the FA cup this year.

Very disappointed with yesterday.
-
That was a shocker of a miss from Rogers before half time. Would expect more from Asensio near the end, never got hold of that shot with his left.
Very interesting team selection coming up on Wednesday. No Kamara is a disaster. Tielemans was running on empty last 20 mins or so and needs a break.

Was the 46th time a player has been sent off against Aston Villa in Premier League history and Villa have failed to win the game (D26, L20).
We lose or draw more than we win (Won 45). Could be a bit misleading though without looking at the minute of the sending off, or whether we were also down to 10 etc, but we do seem to struggle. Dunno how that compares with other teams though.
This one's a bit more interesting..
Since the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season, #AVFC have had 70%+ possession in a game in the competition twelve times (W3, D7, L2).

We are all over the place in defence, but it cannot help that we are constantly changing our defence every game.
Garcia, is okay and a trier but not the answer at right back, also I know that Mings gets a lot of love on here but for me if we do want to constantly challenge for top 4 then he is just not good enough, same can be said for Cash.
Watkins, for me we should have sold him in January and kept Duran, the young lad should have been the future of our attack.
We need better defenders for next season, but if we do not get into a European competition then we will struggle to attract the top players that we need, also some of our better players (Rogers / Kamara / Martinez etc.) could look to move on from Villa, as they have had a taste of the Champions league and will want to continue to play in the European competitions.
It is going to be an interesting summer for Unai and Monchi.

This is the first game I’ve ever been to at VP where I didn’t care about the score. Took my 7 year old lad for his first ever game. It was just magical. Best VP experience I’ve had in as long as I can remember.

He didn't mind the wind, rain, result or grumpy Villa fans? Good lad.

I took my lad of a similar age, he said 'Dad, why don't they just kick the ball in the Ipswich net?'
Out of the mouth of babes...

He probably heard lots of new "nicknames" for our players after that match.....

Garcia, is okay and a trier but not the answer at right back,
Interesting how different people see different things, I thought he looked good the last two games, for someone new to the country, I think he has great potential.

Same here.
Didn’t stop running, kept going beat his man a few times.
An upgrade on Cash with bags more potential.

Bloody loved it. Wants to go again asap but asked that we get the train next time. Didn’t get home to SE London until 10:30. Whoever on here suggested parking in Star City is in my baddest of bad books.

It was a good finish, but shit defending.

Garcia looks fine as a full back, Maatsen is a concern for me , defensively he is fragile .

Blimey I got home to South Devon by 9pm and I went to the Lower Grounds for a bit after the game. Traffic was grim getting away, I think something had happened on the M6, took me an hour to get to West Brom and the M5. Glad your lad enjoyed himself.

M6 south was worse than usual as well although I couldn't see any particular reason other than volume. A cop car went speeding northbound so maybe there was a problem your way.

JUst read a few comments
Andreas Garcia 7 million
Ian Maatsen 37.5 million
Theres only one player Im a little worried about there and thought the other one has looked mighty fine.

I said at the match, how much did we pay for Maatsen in comparison to Garcia?
Wow.

Tottenham and Man U are Ipswich's next two games. Watch that Lev Yashin bellend turn into an amputee Taibi.
-
The last second save would have been an OG as well because Rogers whiffed it, although he probably would have saved the initial shot anyway. I mean the only time we scored was when Rashford dummied the freekick off the cross bar so he wasn't in between the sticks to save the follow-up.

Maatsen was in the CL team of the season last year, so there's clearly a talented player there. To my gammy eye he's not as fit as he should be. If that's an issue, he needs to address that first. You have to be able to mix it physically to thrive in the PL.

In fairness the price tag was part of the PSR game rather than true value although he was voted best LB in the Champions league so although to me he looks a little lightweight he will come good
-
Maatsen looks about 12. Can we get him on booster-boots? There's only one Alan Wright...

Great to hear, he can’t change now, his choice (or yours) has been made!
I normally park just past Star City before you get to the Lichfield Rd and it’s generally not too bad although I imagine actually getting off the car park at Star City could be problematic.

If it’s any consolation the trains back were buggered. I was on the Marylebone line but it was jammed as apparently the Euston trains were down. Always more annoying when we haven’t won.

As has already been suggested, you need to take off about £19m off the Maatsen fee, as that was the Omari Kellyman part of the deal.
-
We're a bit of an enigma at the moment, aren't we? Straight out of the traps against Spuds, then slow, slow, slow in the first half against Town.
-
As has already been suggested, you need to take off about £19m off the Maatsen fee, as that was the Omari Kellyman part of the deal.
But that renders Kellyman worthless which is not the case, he's a very highly rated kid.
Both fees were probably a bit inflated to meet the same needs for each club, I think shaving £10m off each side makes the figures a bit more realistic.
And it's easy to point at the difference in fees between Maatsen and Garcia but the latter hadn't just been voted the Champions League's best full back and transfer fees on the Spanish 2nd division are generally buttons.
