What: UEFA Champions League match 8
When: Wednesday 29 January 2025. Kick Off 20:00
Where: Villa Park, B6
One of the most important matches in our new history. A match that we must win. Celtic have qualified for the play-off round and will also be rested after their game was called off this weekend. We simply must avoid the play-off round.
-
200-0. Fuck 'em, they look like a pack of Pacers.

OMG I HOPE THEY DON'T SING NASTY SONGS ABOUT DEADQUEEN!!11!!

200-0. Fuck 'em, they look like a pack of Pacers.
I was going to say 10-0, but I'll go with you. 200 would be better.
-
Hope that we win and we should - 2-0
-
Be interesting to see if McGinn starts from the off in this one
We'll need his drive and I can imagine he'll be extremely keen to play.
Celtic match was called off over the weekend
Still I think we have the quality , tactical nous and desire to get all 3 points.
3-1 Villa.
Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Digne
Maatsen
Kamara
McGinn
Tielemans
Rogers

I'll go first - Stiliyan Petrov!

Massive game. We need to win and hope results go our way. But having digne at cb doesnt inspire me with much confidence that we can keep a clean sheet.
The Celtic boys will be load so villa fans need to drown them out. Lets do this

I must declare an interest here and state that I follow Celtic, not anything like the Villa, but they are one of the few sides that I don't wish to get battered every week. And any organisation that makes the already furious and red faced Sevco associates even angrier is alright by me.
It's CL carnival time again, the matches we desire and that (at home) have lived up to the hype and I don't think Weds will be any different. Team wise, I have no idea how we will line up, players are tired, injured, struggling for form and only a few can claim to be any near their peak. Having qualified for the KO stage, our opponents have already over achieved and you could say we have but with the tantalising prospect of two games off we need to give it everything.
At this stage I have no idea about the result, it will be noisy, atmospheric and a night to remember, hopefully in a positive way.

Martin O'Neill managed both Villa and Celtic of course.
I imagine he'll be asked to comment leading up to the match.
Possibly invited by the club?
Or used as a pundit for TNT .
-
Angus McCoatup (he was cloakroom attendant at both clubs).
-
Alan McInally
McInally has quite the role at Villa now doesn't he.
Very involved on Villa TV and media side of things.
Quite the host.
He was most prominent for the 150 celebrations yet he only played two years at Villa.
Seems to have an affection for us as only English club he played for.

Whoosh!

Celtic won’t be fancy they’ll be up for it, fast in your face pressing, plenty of high balls into the box and very direct
Just the sort of attacking football we struggle to defend
Anyone thinking it will be a cake walk will be very disappointed especially the way we are playing at the moment
I think it will be a tough night for our defence,
we should have enough quality but that won’t be enough We need to be totally focused and match them in effort and energy levels all over the pitch and attacking intent
2-1

That strikes me as strangely despondent.
-

No, But they are, of course, really easy to activate and use. I suspect the late delivery is a very deliberate ploy to make it as difficult as possible for the green and white army to descend upon our fabled ground.

Thank you for your kind offer, but you really aren't my type.
I've enough shit to worry about in life without trying to find a negative in everything. The tickets will be issued, everyone will get in, we'll watch the game and hopefully life will be lovely by 10pm on Wednesday.
I'm sorry if my optimistic view of life isn't to your taste, I just happen to believe in what I post. As I'm sure your miserable take reflects yours.

Yes, I think that anyone saying ahead of the Mostar games last season that they couldn't see us winning would be similarly strange.

Probably because we have lost to two of the shitter teams we should have won against. Add the injuries in i can see why some are worried about the game.
For me he has to go swinkels and konsa at cb vs celtic. Digne needs to stick to left back that was one of the biggest fuck ups last night
-

It's quite possible that we won't win, for all the reasons that you give, and more besides.
I just don't understand the strange fatalism of not being able to contemplate a scenario where Villa (a better team), beat Celtic (an inferior team).
It's like saying that you couldn't imagine Villa managing to beat, I dunno, Sheffield Wednesday.

Especially as CB aside, pretty much everyone else but Onana is now available. For many seasons now, we seem to have been reluctant to put young players in and give them a chance when we've been a bit short. Both Swinkels and Bogarde are in their 20's now and should be chomping at the bit to get their chance.

They seem a bit nervous.
The only way any Celtic fan can gain access other than the 3002 seats allocated to them is via the GA+ scheme or more than likely Villa fans either profiteering or giving to family and friends.
Either of the latter 2 options and they should be banned for life in my opinion. If you are a villa fan and are lucky enough to have a ticket why the f*ck would you want to give to someone else never mind sell it.
I take no real notice of the pub league they play in but recently i did see Rangers wipe the floor with them - if we play as we can then we should batter them.
Im not happy that all the focus is on McGinn and his boyhood team etc... if he is not in form, and he looked off it on Sunday, then this is not a charity game to give him a run out.
-
Celtic are without two of their better players as well aren’t they? One sold and one suspended
-
5-1 Villa. Rarely confident we'll win, but I am here
-
A much more comfortable win than some expect. We’ll batter them.
-
we will need energy structure and to centre halves
-
we will need energy structure and to centre halves
I think two proper centre halves is super unlikely.
-
They've delayed the electronic issuing of tickets a bit while they try to ensure that no Celtic fans are in our ends after the debacle at the Man U v "Rangers" game last week. They should be issued today.
-
Thanks for the info CD. I will put my prayer mat away for now.🙂

I think Konsa will play left and Bogarde RCH.
But I think that is the team he will go with.
-
Digne will play centre half. Clearly wants a left sider on the left and he won't change his mind off the back of an hour's football
-
Digne will play centre half. Clearly wants a left sider on the left and he won't change his mind off the back of an hour's football
There’s no one else who can play there who’s a left footer. He’ll be ok and can help Maatsen as well.

If we have to play Lucas Digne at centre half we'll do well to win this game.

From where we're being told there'll be about ten thousand left-footers outside.

I've just realised the irony that will be at play should I not receive my tickets when everyone else does. Help! Bren got his, I've not got mine yet!

Digne had his interview yesterday for the LCB and it didn't go well .
Never again please . Keep him at LB and keep Maatsen well away from this one too.

I know, I’m starting to wonder if I actually even paid for them
I’m in the cup scheme but they took the money like yonks ago didn’t they
I’m absolutely sure it’s because of the possibility of them getting into the wrong hands
So like you, I’m only going to start to worry if everyone else gets theirs and not me
-
Is Swinkels injured ?
Seems odd that he wasn't on the bench yesterday

I have heard they’ll all be inside and we won’t get in. I’m scared to go now.

Even the thought of the Papist takeover of Asda Minworth is putting me off my Findus Crispy Pancakes.
-
Console yourself with a Pop Tart for breakfast
-
Maybe Uni should consider a 3 at the back like West Ham did against us with only one fit centre-half. Bogarde on the Right, Konsa in the middle and Digne on the left.

Three Celtics in One.....
Tommy Barber.
He scored the winning goal for us in the 1913 Cup Final.
After suffering wounds in The Somme in 1916 he was evacuated back to Britain and recovered in an Aberdeen hospital. In 1918 he played as a guest for Celtic, in 1919 he played as a guest for Belfast Celtic and after that was on the books of Stalybridge Celtic !

So should be ok

I can’t even begin to work out the best results for us should we win on Wednesday.
Has anyone done a simple summary that shows our path for finishing in the top 8, or is it too mind bending?
Yes. We need to win and ONE of the following needs to happen:
We beat Celtic by TWO goals more than LEVERKUSEN beat Sparta Prague
ATALANTA lose or draw away vs Barcelona
AC MILAN lose or draw away vs Dinamo Zagreb
ATLETICO MADRID lose or draw away vs Salzburg
INTER lose at home to Monaco and we make up the GD (currently they are +2 better than us)
and assuming that one of the other teams on 13 points (Monaco, Feyenoord, Lille) don't go crazy and absolutely smash their opponents by a stupid score and overhaul our goal difference advantage. Although if that was Monaco, Inter would go below us.
Most likely one of those things will happen; but it will be sod's law that we don't beat Celtic.
Oh, and a very unlikely pair of results where we batter Celtic and/or Arsenal get battered by Girona, and we make up 7 goal difference.
-

Yes I did the other night after Monaco game. It is win tomorrow and we finish top 8 as for it to not happen about 5 teams also need to win their matches. That’s not going to happen. One or two will slip up so you andyh make sure it’s not us🫵🏾
-
Wow !!!
That is a seriously good summary TS, thank you.
Oh, and you obviously have far too much time on your hands 😂

After their recent shitting themselves about going to the game, followed by kissing up to Rangers fans in the hope they don't get battered, I doubt Celtic fans will want to mix with that rabble. Celtic generally pride themselves on not being Rangers.
-
My anxiety levels are building up about a half n half scarves breakout on Wednesday night .

We'll win by at least three goals.
They're shit.
Too much modesty around here.
If we don't win at least 3-0 we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.
Its going to be so one-sided you'll all question what you were worried about.
Honestly think it could be 6 or 7.

It really won't. We are in a bit of a rut form wise, they have been decent enough in Europe this year. From memory one of their best under Rodgers in Europe. Solid scrappy win will do and get us into the next round.
Martinez, Cash, Konsa, ?, Digne, Kamara, McGinn, Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey, Duran.
-
6 or 7 are you having a laugh? We beat Southampton 1-0 at home, they are definitely not worse than them.
-
Only needs to be 1-0. I'd be happy enough with that, although we may need a better goal difference.
-
We should be wiping the floor with Celtic. But there's a malaise about us this season and it's so frustrating. I'll take a 1-0 win and that's how far we've fallen.
-
Comfortable win. Last 16 beckons.
-
6 or 7 are you having a laugh? We beat Southampton 1-0 at home, they are definitely not worse than them.
Which of their players do you reckon would get into the Southampton team?
I wouldn't take 11 goals in 70 Championship games Adam Idah over Archer. Or Adam Armstrong with his 80 or so Championship goals.
Their centre-backs are Auston Trusty who was in and out of that awful Sheffield United team last season and Cameron Carter-Vickers who spent his entire pre-Celtic career jobbing around the fringes of not-very-good Championship sides.
Joe Aribo plays around half Southampton's matches, having joined them as one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership.
This doesn't mean we definitely win. We could easily lose. But player for player, they are Not Good.
-
Jota is back isn't he. (Not that one)

That team would easily beat them.
Remember when we were shit and got relegated. Scott Sinclair, one of our shittest players, left and became their best player and was part of their treble treble-winning team.
The gap is absolutely massive.
It will be a thrashing on Wednesday night.
-
Jota is back isn't he. (Not that one)

You may be right, but there is nothing from us to say we’re going to click and walk through a team at the moment. Granted they had a horror show in Dortmund - maybe some intel from Malen might help - but equally they drew at Atalanta. If we breeze past them I’d be delighted, but I’d also be surprised.
-
Just checking the Irish TV listing for Wednesday night and we've been relegated to the chanel nobody has in favour of Man City vs Brugge and Liverpool vs PSV.
I'm shocked that our game isn't getting proper coverage considering its Celtic we're playing.
-
I don't think that we'll breeze past them either (although I also wouldn't rule it out).
Just that their quality is that of a mid-table Championship side. But Premier League teams have lost to teams much worse than that in the past.
-
I don't think UE will need much in depth scouting from Malen about their game in Dortmund.
'Don't give the ball away in your own 18 yard box by constantly trying to play out from the back when you are shit at it' should just about cover it.
-
Yeah and perhaps I articulated it poorly, but whether Celtic are man for man better than Southampton wasn’t what I was really call out. It’s more the idea that we should be ashamed if we don’t stroll through them - all my experience with Villa, especially in our current form suggests breezing strolling past anyone feels unlikely.
-
I don't watch a lot of Scottish football, mainly because it's a bit rubbish. We can't take these lightly though. The pressure is off them now they've qualified and like we always tend to do, we'll probably make hard work of it.

There you go, that expresses my view in a more succinct way.

This is going to be a very hard difficult game, I can't see anyway they are going to approach this in a half arsed manner, they'll want this, problem is the way we have turned up lately, with little fight to offer, this could be a bit of a shock.
I'm going for Villa, based on nothing more than wishful thinking.
-
I’m expecting a really noisy Villa Park and I’m expecting the team to respond positively like they often do on such nights. Close but a Villa win.

Tend to agree. Going from memory, we've won by more than two goals just once this season and that was against a collection of young boys.
We've rarely been convincing since August (I actually think our first two games, WHam away and Arse at home were our best performances to date in 24/25).

My anxiety levels are building up about a half n half scarves breakout on Wednesday night .
For first time in my life i might actually get one. Just to wind up the EDL chaps around me. Nah, I probably won’t.
Indeed Bren, i had some twenty something who sits in front of me (has done for years) ranting in my ear at the end of Sundays game about Bobby Sands loving wankers coming here on Wednesday etc. cant wait for my villa brethren belting out the first chorus of no surrender.

Don't be, the level of interest in Scottish club football in Ireland has declined hugely. Was a lot different when MON was up there and both Glasgow clubs were getting to European finals and swapping league titles.
Celtic will always have some level of support, especially in Donegal with the huge generational ties to Glasgow and up north generally for political reasons. But down south honestly you wouldnt see many Celtic jerseys around these days.

I'd still imagine there'd be more interest in a Celtic game than a Man City game. Although the idea of watching Man City fail to qualify is appealing, I suppose.

Had the brother in law over for the Villa Manchester United (he's united by the way )game about 20 years ago and were in the upper holte and some twats singing about sands and chicken in a basket shit , heard the same shit a few years ago behind me in the lower holte a few seasons ago and another arsehole when we played Tottenham calling Harry Kane a Irish c**t,look around,I thought to myself go on repeat it, we got our own dick heads that live in the dark ages

Were any of you at the infamous friendly v Rangers in 76?
I was 13 and my dad wouldn’t let me go on my own. He didn’t have to do much to stop me other than not give me any money! As a Dubliner he knew what would happen.
Back then on a saturday we used to go to our nan’s in Newtown and then head down the Bull Ring markets to buy food. My dad would work on a Saturday morning and then come to our nan’s for a few cobs and then the two of us would head to Villa Park. The day of the Rangers game there were groups of drunk Rangers fans at the Crown and Cushion when we passed on the bus around 10am and when we got to Newtown my aunt told us not to go into town as the Rangers fans were causing problems everywhere, even in Rackhams.
We went home to Great Barr while the game was on and heard the events unfold on the radio. Most of our friendlies back then would get gates of 7-8;000 so having 10,000 Rangers fans was crazy.

I am actually tasked with buying one for my nephew’s lad but hoping he can get it himself.

Apart from Celtic missing a penalty and having 3 goals disallowed.

Indeed he was. I remember reading about how his comrades, who mostly supported Celtic, Liverpool or Man Utd, found it sad that he wasn’t around to see Villa win the league and the European Cup. I was one of what the National Front referred to as ‘the remote control boot boys of the Socialist Workers Party’ at the time and every now and then I sold their newspaper on the ramp leading to the Pallasades, a busy shopping mall in Birmingham city centre. One week the paper was plastered with a pro-IRA headline and I had to stand there and sell it, about fifty yards from one, and a hundred yards from the other, of the two pubs blown up in the Birmingham pub bombings.
As you can imagine, it was quite a day and I vowed never to have so many heated arguments on a subject ever again. I kept my promise until, decades later, a bloke on the internet tried to convince me that the more goals a defence concedes, the better it actually is.

Were any of you at the infamous friendly v Rangers in 76?
I was there. A Rangers fan asked me if I was Catholic or Protestant. I was 12 and it meant so little to me I didn’t even know. I said Church of England and got away with it, but I had no idea that made me a Protestant as people in England rarely used that word to describe their faith. (I was actually an atheist at the time - my family did a lot to help build a church in our area and I was a rebellious child).
I quite like Buddhism these days, because they abhor cruelty to dumb animals. So in the spirit of Buddha, I apologise for being nasty to you on the other thread.

I was there, yes, along with my dad and two sisters. Quite what dad was thinking, taking us, I don't know. It was a seriously scary couple of hours.

I was there with the old man, a Catholic Glaswegian Celtic fan.
He wanted to take them all on when they invaded the pitch, but saw sense and got me out of there, as I was only 12 at the time. Was very frightening.

Were any of you at the infamous friendly v Rangers in 76?
I was there as a naive 14 year old. Similar to other recollections I was surprised to see so many away fans in the city centre in the morning, particularly for a friendly game. They were all over town and all seemingly drunk. As the day unfolded I became fearful for my safety for the first time at a football match. I had a wake up call and learned the art of being street wise, very useful to going to a football match, particularly away from home in the 1970s and 1980s. I still look back on the day as a valuable life experience. And I’ve never liked Rangers since.

Were any of you at the infamous friendly v Rangers in 76?
Luckily I'd been in town that morning so anticipated what it would be like nearer the ground. That said I've never seen so many drunks in one place. I remember stepping over fans slumped against walls on Aston Lane clutching bottles of port as I was on the way to the game. Two specific memories, firstly the next home game The Holte was littered with thousands of whisky bottle caps flattened into the concrete. Secondly I worked for Birmingham Social Services at the time and as late as the following Friday the social work teams were trying to arrange safe returns to Glasgow for large numbers of younger teenagers who had travelled down unaccompanied and run out of funds to return (or been detained by the police).
-
I know on paper we're probably better but you could say the same about West Ham and Monaco. If we turn up, energised and *taps temple* tactically aware, I think we win. Celtic are a team that are used to big European games and they do tend to give a good account of themselves generally. I don't think we should underestimate them at all. Looking forward to it, whatever happens! I'm still so grateful that Villa at long last are able to compete on this level and write more chapters into our history. Do us proud, Villa.
-
It is a cup game , you only have to look at Man u and Rangers we have to show more than we have done the last month or so
-
It is a cup game , you only have to look at Man u and Rangers we have to show more than we have done the last month or so
Man U are fucking tripe though.
We’ll win by 3 clear goals.
-
I think we’ll win, although the centre back situation concerns me - but the idea we’ll just walk through them flies in the face of, both, everything I know about Villa and also our general performance levels this year.
-
This is a game where the Villa fans need to find their voices, as we are in a dodgy spell form wise and the Celtic fans will no doubt be refreshed from an all dayer In town and very noisy. We are so unpredictable at the moment any result is possible, but if we put in a 7/10 performance we will win.
-
This is a better Celtic side than has graced Europe for a number of years. They've added a pragmatism under Rodgers II to the Angeball that swept Scotland aside for two years but flopped in Europe.
We're helped by Maeda's suspension and Kyogo leaving but despite us being favourites, don't expect an easy ride. Their biggest threat will be Kuhn, who plays wide on the right but cuts inside onto his left.
-
Yeah, well we've got Bailey!
-
*crosses self*
-
I do agree with the crowd being key to this. Obviously the atmosphere will not intimidate the away team but it has been mentioned many times it inspires our team.
I really hope we turn it on for this game and wipe the floor with them
Remember even tactics Tim outsmarted the genius that is Rogers

yes too
11 years old with dad and grandad , was a right eye opener . I think I was still waiting for the second half as I was a bit naive saying to my dad , they will sort the goalposts out wont they . Very disapointing to go back Hinckley early but Im sure Dad just wanted us back safe . My Rangers mates are always mentioning ths game when we go for beers, never forgotten.

Were any of you at the infamous friendly v Rangers in 76?
I was walking through town at 7 in the morning after an all night party in Moseley. Saw coaches coming off Spaghetti junction, full of rabid Scots banging the windows and offering us out. Decided to give it a miss. Few of my mates saw me after the game and filled me in on what had happened. Quite a few Dads went to the City centre that evening looking for payback. Tony Butler on BRMB was imploring people not to go out for revenge. Looking back, I’m amazed Villa arranged that friendly. Rangers had caused mayhem at Elland Road and St James Park in other so called friendlies . It is of note though that the Blues had played a friendly the week before against Celtic, and although there were a few arrests, pretty normal for those times, there was nothing like the mayhem we were subjected to.

My Celtic supporting boss from Glasgow is very worried about their lack of firepower up front.
Their fans have been told that banners over a certain size will require a fire certificate…… and they’ve been advised to avoid the Windsor before the game. I can’t imagine a pub with that name being high on Celtic fans’ list of priorities.

To smash it up? Probably. Would suggest William keeps a low profile.

Still a possibility Tyrone can play .

Unai Emery said: "We will see this afternoon and then we are going to decide how every player is feeling. We have Lamare Bogarde in the squad as well, he is training every day and competing very well. Sil [Swinkels] is another option because he is training with us, but we are thinking of letting him leave on loan. I think he will need more experience to get minutes.
"We have enough players to compete and feel confidence. For example, Lucas Digne is left-footed and is an experienced player. He can feel confident [playing at centre-back]. Firstly, if Tyrone Mings is available then he could play, but if not, Bogarde - who has usually played in midfield - he is training sometimes as a centre-back. I am confident and I believe in the squad we have.

Some mad stories there. Didn't they wreck Manchester in more recent times for that UEFA cup final too.
Was there any truth in rumour Villa fans were waving tricolours etc to wind them up? 18 months or so after the bombings so I would have thought the tricolour would have more likely to be burned at both ends of the ground around then.
Old school Celtic fans would have a soft spot for Villa over 76.

Same with me but I didn't realise until I got to the ground and the old bloke at the Holte End turnstile said "I wouldn't go in there son, go up the Witton End". Personally I've never had much time for either Rangers or Celtic, even more so now I partly live in Glasgow. Most of the fans I've met in pubs and out and about in Glasgow have been great and love chatting general football. What I don't like is, when on my frequent visits to lower Scottish league grounds, seeing all the locals waiting for the many coaches to Glasgow instead of watching their local team. Most sides still have a loyal hardcore following though (I went to Hibs with Clydebank in the cup last week which was a great day, apart from the result!)
-
Anyone know if Stan Petrov will be at the game? Big game for him also.
-
Dunno, I'm just hoping Didier Agathe is invited to perform the "Saturday Night" dance once the tannoy operator blasts out a bit of Whigfield for the half-time entertainment.
-
I’d keep Digne at centre half, and hope with a bit more time to work on it, him and Maatsen make a better job of it than Sunday.
It would be different if we’re away from home, but we’re going to have the majority of the ball and it should suit Digne playing there, rather than the alternatives.

You are correct concerning the tricolour, not sure if someone ran on with it towards the centre circle only for a Rangers supporter to run on carrying a big blue and white teddy bear, which finally kicked it off, pretty sure it all correct unless my mind playing up

There has been times when they say the injury isnt as bad but then go missing for long periods. I doubt they will risk mings with his knee problems and will give him time.
Rumours are rumours though until a player comes in swinkels shouldnt be going anywhere. We already fucked up with letting carlos go with no replacement thus far.
Finally its not about apperances its about having options when a injury crisis arises so on that basis i disagree.
-
Agreed on the good middle name though yeah?

There is no way Swinkels will get near to the starting line-up. Emery has shown zero confidence in the lad to date.
If it were me I'd play Kamara at CB and bring Bogarde into defensive MF.

You say that, but all I can now see is Zaniolo pinging that long-promised worldie in from thirty yards and a 2-1 Atalanta win.

It's not often I agree with DC, well about anything really but he has a point on this. What happens tomorrow if either Konsa or Digne takes a knock? By putting Kamara back there, you could argue you are weakening the midfield. As decent as Bogarde was at Arsenal, he had Kamara alongside him.

The stuff about a Villa fan waving a tricolour that kicked off trouble is made up nonsense.
Unfortunately it is not ....a car pulled up outside the Aston Hotel and threw two tricolours and half a dozen Celtic scarves to the lads outside .
They were waved throughout ...I fully understand the sensitivity because of 74 but everyone was fuming about them in the Holte ....The lad ran into the pitch upto the halfway line and was dancing around .
As the other chap said a bearded jock clutching a big blue teddy bear came out the Holte with a couple of others ....The Villa lad taunted them before running back into the Witton the rangers fans were encouraged to follow him but declined .... I witnessed it myself
-

Actually it ain’t. I worked with a guy from Glasgow then. He was a bit of an arsehole when drunk, which was quite often. He was also a big Celtic fan. I gave the match a miss, but later one of my other mates told me Jock had taken a small Irish flag to the match in order to rile the Huns as he called them. A week later he left Birmingham and gave me a cooker he’d just purchased, it turned out to be nicked.

When I see tricolour my immediate thoughts went to France and that's the association.
But to be clear that's not the case here and for anyone else like myself who didn't follow:
"The tricolour is the Irish flag that Celtic Football Club flies on match days to celebrate its Irish heritage. The flag is green, white, and orange, and it symbolizes the unity of Roman Catholics and Protestants"

There was about half a dozen of them on new street this afternoon shouting and drinking on the street and basically acting the c**t.

As the other chap said a bearded jock clutching a big blue teddy bear came out the Holte with a couple of others ....The Villa lad taunted them before running back into the Witton the rangers fans were encouraged to follow him but declined .... I witnessed it myself
Thanks for clarifying that, thought old age was playing tricks on my mind
When I see tricolour my immediate thoughts went to France and that's the association.
But to be clear that's not the case here and for anyone else like myself who didn't follow:
"The tricolour is the Irish flag that Celtic Football Club flies on match days to celebrate its Irish heritage. The flag is green, white, and orange, and it symbolizes the unity of Roman Catholics and Protestants"
I read that in the voice of C3-P0. I’ve never heard t he Irish flag be called the tricolour before however. Anyway all that was before my time. I don’t see us winning tomorrow however. Hoping we do but not confident

Be interesting to see if McGinn starts from the off in this one
We'll need his drive and I can imagine he'll be extremely keen to play.
Celtic match was called off over the weekend
Still I think we have the quality , tactical nous and desire to get all 3 points.
3-1 Villa.

The stuff about a Villa fan waving a tricolour that kicked off trouble is made up nonsense.

I don't know what that is?
C-3PO or See-Threepio is a humanoid robot character in the Star Wars franchise.
Star Wars is a space opera film series about a war between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance.
The story takes place in a fictional galaxy "a long time ago"
This is definitely not my sort of thing with respect I don't go in for fictional galaxies.

went into town before the game and it was pissed up rangers everywhere. All down lichfield road was the same - theyd already broken into the holte and slept in it the night before. Carnage everywhere.

It is of note though that the Blues had played a friendly the week before against Celtic, and although there were a few arrests, pretty normal for those times, there was nothing like the mayhem we were subjected to.
a Blues mate of mine had a knife waved in his face on the Tilton v Celtic.

In 25, I do hope this won't be happening.
There was footage of Rangers fans in the Man Utd home end, but I'm not sure what level of trouble occurred at that match last week. Or incidents in and around the area linked to the football supporters.
There will be tight security for this match tomorrow then.
Not just within the club security and intelligence that are made aware of prevent troublemakers but plainclothes officers I would suspect.
Best not to speculate or discuss this however a little insight on these things (people will start thinking that steward or fan by me are they a police officer) as best to have an element of ignorance for general football fans not being aware of thinking of these things.
Their job is to be using gained intelligence to prevent and keep safety, but the majority of football matches will not have too many undercover there would be several each match for certain games as well as personal security for certain attendees.

From Celtic
Fans are strongly advised not to attend the stadium if you do not have a valid match ticket. There will be a large Police presence with ticket cordons in place on approach at Witton Lane.

And I send all best to all attendees tomorrow.
Including may or may not Prince William, who of course will have RP0 That's Royal Protections officers, but again it's also best not to speculate on William being in attendance due to security. (I suspect he will be at the match.)
For discussion sake though we can expect that extra policing security visible around Birmingham itself and at the ground anyway, given the event and William at the match MI5 (military intelligence 5 comes from the 5th branch of the protective military intelligence) will be in place I suspect.

I come from Witton Station direction where I park and need to get to middle of Witton Lane Stand. Am I best to divert at Yew Tree Road etc to get to Holte Pub etc given the police cordons on Witton Lane? Presumably they won’t let Villa supporters through and I’d end up on Trinity Road etc

I expect it will be the same as previous matches where they allowed home fans access through gates at the back of the store located near Nelson Lane.
Edit: Although if you could do the same when you went to last years Conference games, that will also be allowed this time. I suppose it depends how many Celtic Fans go there.

I'll be sad if I'm wrong (obviously) but I think all this fear of widespread trouble will come to little.
There'll be a few drunken scuffles in town; their fans will turn up, sing a few silly songs about the royal family, Bobby Sands and Palestine; we'll give them a good hiding on the pitch and, humbled by our magnificence, they'll make their way back to Glasgow over the following 24 hours.

They're doing the same they do every match, with a bit more road closure after kick-off, presumably so they can keep a better eye on anyone without tickets.

We've had those lorries at either end of the ground to try to prevent terrorism for years.
-
The anti terrorism stuff was mentioned in a. Statement by the police I saw earlier.
I suspect that like the Ajax and Olympiacos matches the only people who will be able to enter Witton lane from Witton island will be Celtic supporters. This wasn’t the case against Bayern or Juventus (and I doubt against Bologna although I was in North Stand then)
-
Bologna fans got kettled, I know because my dad accidentally got kettled with them. No harm done, lots of Italian lads made sure the stewards got him safely where he was meant to go.
-
I just don't understand what they think using the word 'terrorism' will achieve other than alarming Villa fans and local residents, and making Celtic fans feel profiled.

Whatever the result, heading back into Brum after the game is going to make an interesting couple of post match pints .

May be a legal requirement for road closures?. They do say it is a continuation of the existing counter terrrorism strategy.

Anyone Brighton-based watching this in a pub tomorrow? Doubt we'll be first choice in most pubs outside Brum and Glasgae.

I met my nephew at the North stand gates as usual for the Olympiacos game. I felt it was low key and we were all mixed together on the train to Witton, and I walked up to the ground from Witton island They were exuberant but friendly and it felt like the police picked up on that.

There’s nearly always trouble with Rangers, mainly because they’re religious nutcases. The vast majority of prisoners in America identify with one non-existent sky fairy or other. Atheists make up a tiny proportion of the prison population, suggesting they’re almost always decent, law-abiding citizens, devoid of magic where their brains should be.
Sorry for any offence, other god-botherers.

^^ I like Buddhism because you don’t have to really believe in much except kindness. Buddha’s example was he was born rich and gave it all away after discovering poverty outside his palace. Then he went to live under a tree.

Satyin is definitely the one to ask, but I don't consider Buddhism a 'religion' in the Western sense at all.
It's a school of thought that completely transcends 'our' (i.e. our inherited culture's) monotheistic models of duality between good/evil, punishment/reward, that pervade our religious traditions and our notions of ethics and morality.
But anyway, yeah. Sorry. Villa vs Celtic, haha.
-
Ah the God debate got here too. Wonderful.
I hope we win.
Just to say that Buddhism has nothing to do with 'god'.

From my experience, most Buddhists in the Western hemisphere would probably consider themselves secular (do not believe in a creator) Buddhists, yes.
But let's not get tangled up. This must be as boring to people who aren't interested in Buddhism as Christ is to people who aren't interested in Christianity.
Buddhism, it's fair to say, is a far more complex and nuanced belief system than monotheistic religion. 'Nuff said 🙂

Looks like Carter-Vickers is out for this one. Celtic fans seem to think Alistair Johnston might also be rested and their back four will be Ralston, Trusty, Scales, Taylor. They don't sound very confident with the word 'gubbing' being used ahead of the game.

Buddhism is not a theistic religion in the way that the Abrahamic religions are. The Buddha is not raised perpetually above humanity, with a greatness to which we are forever secondary. Rather, the Buddha is a figure to aspire to, to try and emulate

Even if we had not sold Carlos, Unai still would not have played him whilst Mings is injured, due to Unai insisting that only a left footed player can play on the left hand side of our defence.
It will be interesting to see how Digne does at centre half this evening.
-
Even if we had not sold Carlos, Unai still would not have played him whilst Mings is injured, due to Unai insisting that only a left footed player can play on the left hand side of our defence.
When has he said this? Or it it just that we've never been in a position where we were missing both of Torres and Mings so it's never come up before?
I find it unlikely that he wouldn't have played Diego Carlos, who has played most of his career at LCB ahead of Digne if he were still with us.
-
I have seen comments from Unai saying that the reason Digne did and can play there is because he’s left footed. So it does seem like it’s one of the bigger attributes he looks for in a LCB.
However, I just looked for those comments and now I’m convinced I dreamt them.

Even if we had not sold Carlos, Unai still would not have played him whilst Mings is injured, due to Unai insisting that only a left footed player can play on the left hand side of our defence.
It will be interesting to see how Digne does at centre half this evening.
Left side was Diego’s natural position TBF, so he’d have definitely put him there.
-
Emery on Mings injury: "Lucas Digne helped us but we lost a little bit."
"I don't know sadly but hopefully not a lot. With the left CB it's very important with Pau Torres. He can play with his left foot. Today we have another centre-back. I needed one left-footed player."
“Lamare Bogarde can play centre back on the right but playing on the left, with our build-up, I decided for Lucas because he has experience, he has a left foot.”

And also given Carlos was a bit loose and tentative bringing the ball out on his good foot, he'd have been a bomb scare on his left side.
Is Courtney Hause still a footballer ?
-
I honestly thought that Carlos was a right sided centre half, he only seemed to play in that position, although I am probably wrong?
-
Yes, you probably are.
-
I honestly thought that Carlos was a right sided centre half, he only seemed to play in that position, although I am probably wrong?
We bought him based on his performances for Sevilla, where he played on the left with Kounde on the right. Given the issues between Gerrard and Mings when Gerrard arrived, it seems logical that we bought him with a view to our first-choice centre-backs being Konsa (R) and Carlos (L).
Whether Emery is wedded to the idea of a left-footer at LCB I don't know. But it doesn't seem impossible that he'd pick Carlos over Digne if he'd had the choice.

He was a right footed/sided centre half, but he played on the left for Sevilla I think, whether that was cos they didn't have a left footer to put there I don't know

Is tyrone definately out ?

Is tyrone definately out ?
We think so, 2 weeks.

Well enjoy the game everyone.
3pts is the main objective and anything else for other team results for a top 8 finish could be possible ! Time will tell.
Up the Villa!

So is Birmingham awash with Celtic fans this afternoon?

My wife just messaged me saying she’s saw lots. Lots of police out too. She was fine though, once she denounced the royal family and kissed the tricolour.

Who have Celtic got on the weekend?

I'm 40 miles away and I can hear the thundering terror of the marauding Fenians.

I live with one, it's worse earache all day

I took an hour long walk around town this afternoon. I was completely shocked by the behaviour of the Celtic fans, one asked me the directions to Malmaison and I saw one of the others sipping a pint of what looked like lager. I'm not sure how the city can be expected to cope with such louts.

Tonight's the biggest night of European football the world has ever seen the top and our names on everyone's lips.
Enjoy it.

Any top tips for parking near the Barton 1730/1745 ish?? I’ve never been 🫣
Villa supporting American cousin driving me up 💪🏼
No Emoji rule exceptions due to excitement.

Scum. Good job we have those anti-terror laws in effect this afternoon.

Aston Tower Community Primary school, a short walk to the Barton's.

Most Celtic fans looked to be heading for the station. The only singing I heard was an out of tune version of the Amarrillo CL song splutterd out by some Villa fans.
Pubs are steady.
-
There will be a few Celtic fans in the Doug Ellis.

Wonder if they don't realise they aren't any pubs around Aston, especially for away supporters

That Amarillo CL song is just so cringeworthy. Villa boys are taking over. Jeez.

Love it!

The Emery song makes my skin crawl, if only for the absolute butchery of the melody.
-
So is Birmingham awash with Celtic fans this afternoon?
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside. I wonder to myself.
-

I’ll do it myself then.
“Motherwell”
“Yeah, she’s fine, thanks for asking.”
-

Yep, at least follow the tune and timing of the song.

Get there early enough and you can use the pubs very small car park at the back. They charge £16 on match days though. If not that, definitely use a paid car park, that whole area is dodgy as hell.
-

The only words I know is Unai Emery

Thank you so much DB, booked en route. Against all my habits to pay but the Cuz is, compared to $60 at the NFL, £9 is small change.

Big game, this, innit?
Yep, atmosphere should be great. Could be a really important one in terms of how the rest of our season unfolds really.

Looking for recommendations where the best place to park coming off the Aston expressway. My lad is going up for the game but he is driving from London.
-
Digbeth is filling up.
Spotted dog will be hopping. Reliably informed a few months ago it's a Blues pub though
-
Didn't Diego play a lot of games on the left side of the defence for Sevilla?
-
He did but that's all in the past now. Come on you Villa Bhoys!
-

On match days yes, for about an hour or two after the game. Otherwise it's just a pub and a decent one if they get their staff to pour the Guinness properly.

Same with a lot of the pubs round there. They love to claim them as a "blues pub" but it's only on matchdays and only because the sty is walkable. The Fountain is a bona fide nose pub though. They run away coaches from there. Decent pub tbh I meet my bro in there occasionally.

Anyone know what the tifo will be? Looks a girthy one judging by the ropes.
-
Ozzy Osbourne.
-
"Girthy tifos" - you'll never sing that!

Not if you are sky its not. Breaking news was Rashford trained today but has not travelled....yawn

Most of our songs are. Because they're created on Twitter by the younger crowd.
As far as I'm concerned, if it's nicked from another club it's shit. If it has a reference to a local team it's shit. If is too sweary, it's shit.
Original songs please. With not many words and family friendly.

Wish I was going - decided not to, and now will have the listen to the glee in the voices of the commentators as they discuss Ollies dream move

Odds on a Celtic win - 6/1
And people on here are worried and think it'll be close ;D
Going to be such a gulf in quality it's laughable.
We haven't thrashed anyone in a while and this is the perfect opportunity.
I'm going 6-0 Villa.

Celtic are all on the old crown. The nitty headed in small heath claiming a victory. My Nan hated Celtic as they were Scottish pretenders in her eyes.

Their version of ‘brass in pocket’ wasn’t very good though

To those going tonight, don't be scared when you get confronted by some pissed up Celtic fan screaming and pointing at you. He probably just wants to exchange scarves.
-
I am parked up, ready to walk down shortly.
A gang of about 40 have just gone past my car.
All dark clothes, scarves round the face.
It felt slightly intimidating for no reason other than it was a huge gang ambling past my car
Edit
Just spoken to someone who was walking behind this groups.
They picked up another 30 or so at Aston Station.
He also said he thinks they may have been Rangers ‘fans’ as many were carrying union flags !!
-
No surprise but no Mings tonight confirmed by Elmo.

My office is in Digbeth. Pubs were packed full of Celtic from midday

What did he say about our want-away strike-force?
-
The balaclava boys under heavy police escort on platform 6. No idea why anyone would need to wear a balaclava today...
Edit. Probably a sunburn risk.
-
Many of them will be ginger.
-
Bogarde at CB. Watkins starting.
McGinn and Duran on the bench.

'Watkins always shoots at the keeper, couldn't trap a bag of cement, get rid' and 'Duran will be in prison and penniless by the time he's 28'.

Gulp

'Put your balaclava on and if you do need the toilet, put plenty of paper down first'

Bogarde's on the bench as well as in the 11, according to the graphic.

Well, at least the options from our bench will keep them guessing I suppose…
-

Travis patterson. A exciting attacking midfielder apparently

They're about as tasty as a Glasgow chippy.
6-0.
