Title: Aston Villa vs West Ham pre-match thread
Post by: Olneythelonely on January 23, 2025, 04:06:15 PM
Could be down to bear bones for this one. Still, they’re rubbish, we should do them.

Probably won't be done, but I would start Malen.

Home game so seeing one of the new players will lift the crowd from the start after the disappointment of mid-week.

I'd be amazed if he doesn't play some part (and disappointed if we see Bailey start).

We've lost the league game after the last 2 CL Aways, and the players will have BOTH eyes on the Celtic game. Will be amazed if we even get a point out of this one.

Why bare bones? Have we got new injuries/suspensions?

Just thought that there were some proper walking wounded on Tuesday. We’ve got 2 fit centre halves and 3 midfielders out. Maybe bare  bones (or bear bones as I said - idiot) isn’t quite the case but we could do with some players back.

Thank You.
430pm Super Sunday game. First time this season Villa get top billing.

Francisco Martín "Pako" Ayestarán Barandiarán Assistant Head Coach be running things from the touchline. Emery suspended.

Emery record at home v West Ham 3 wins (2 Villa, 1 Arsenal)
Emery record v Potter 2 wins from 2

In the FA Cup game when upped the tempo and quality West Ham couldn't cope. I think only managed 30 or so minutes of decent play but that was enough and would again for two goals and  go for a win but this time a clean sheet.

I would start Watkins he has scored 3 goals and 1 assist home and away last 4 Prem matches.
And has 3 goals in 4 at home in the Prem against West Ham.

I'd start Maatsen in this one but I think he'll play Digne.
And I think Bogarde will get some minutes.

2-0
Watkins and Ramsey

On that subject - We play on Tuesday, then have to push our league game all the way back to last billing on the Sunday, before a critical midweek Champions League game?!

Why the fuck has Villa v West Ham even been selected for primetime weekend telly? Must be a shite week for fixtures! Thanks very much Sky!

It also means that we have an extra two days of rest before Wet Ham in what is also an important game for us.

As the late Queen used to say, 'recollections may vary'. The FA Cup game changed when they lost Fullkrug then Summerville, this a team without Antonio (get well soon) and Bowen. Danny Ings, even with his new hair was never going to scare us. I'd have a lot more sympathy for West Ham if they didn't have a nonce's anthem as their own.

Unai needs to get the lads moving as they're like statues half the time. Ideally McGinn will be back to bring some much needed energy to the midfield. Obviously Bailey doesn't start, it's a toss up between world class, international class, top PL goalscorer, Ollie Watkins or sulky, childlike Jhon Duran. Not sure I would play Rogers, R9 or infuriating are his two levels but I'm pretty sure Unai will play him.

Looking forward to seeing a right winger in a Villa shirt for the first time this season, welcome Donyell Malen. More than anything I'm looking forward to 3 points. We should be beating teams like West Ham at home and need to stay in with the top 7 pack.

I think Emery still sees Watkins as a safer bet in the bigger games against better opponents, so will start him v West Ham and Duran will start v Celtic.

Amazing that we all spend hours of our lives on here yet without looking it up or FV telling us, how many of us would have been able to name Unai's assistant who will be running the show on Sunday?!

I can picture his bald head and now that I've seen his name written down it makes sense but would never have been able to come up with it independently. It's terrible fandom and I apologise.

Please no bailey , im done with him , if he scores his confidence will come back , well it didnt happen and sick of him losing the ball and then falling over like he is hurt so please MALEN.

Id go with with JJ and  Buendia and give Rogers a break and Duran up front to wind  the hammers up.

Will Garcia be on the bench?

can Mcphee start earning his money too ..     we are absolutely rubbish at corners , we was doing that near post corner for ages and think we scored one goal from about 6400 corners and now gone to dropping it in the goalies hand and then better teams will then hit us on the break so pease sort the fucker out.

anyway 3 0 Villa

I'd say highly unlikely to get top 7 and not going down. A squad that needs a clear out and rebuild I can see them simply muddling along until May and then Potter can really get to work.

Can be as low as 9th and even 10th depending on trophy winners.

3 wins in a row they are eyeing Europe, 3 defeats in a row they'll be peeking over their shoulders.

And that's before playing for their futures with a new manager.

True, just don't see it happening though unless they have a great January window including signing a decent striker . They've got plenty of dead wood that need moving on too.

Id start Duran over Watkins anyway. Ramsey to come back in. Maybe give Bogarde a go next to Kamara. We really don't have that many options to rotate a clearly fatigued team in Monaco. Tielemans, Rogers, Watkins off bench is still strong.

Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Kamara, Bogarde, Malen, Buendia, Ramsey, Duran.

Bailey 2.0 , please no . I'd rest Watkins and let JD have another go .

Cash Konsa Mings Digne

Ramsey ------------ Rogers
---Malen ----- Duran -------

Like many, I have supported Bailey through 'thick and thin' but enough is enough. Has to be dropped against West Ham..

Last season he was our Mo Salah, this season he is our Mo Farah. Running around in circles!! He has lost all confidence, pace and his positional sense is disruptive to the team. I sometimes think he is hiding from the ball. Must do Unai's nut in.

One thing I noticed about Liverpool is Mo Salah is often their 'out ball' from defence. He stays higher up the field than any other Liverpool player and always out towards the right touch line. With haste, the ball is either hoofed in his general direction, or if a Liverpool player has a bit more time, a precision pass to him follows. Salah has space, then a 'charge of the light brigade' from the rest.

One thing I noticed about Villa, is that we dither and fart around with the ball at the back and by the time it reaches Bailey he is suffocated by defenders.

Yes, Bailey has been playing shyte but perhaps we are doing him no favours. He could be our 'out ball' with either Watkins or Duran dropping a bit deeper when we are defending.

Just a thought.

I don't think there's a chance that Duran and Malen both start, though I can see them both getting minutes.

Tricky game (aren't they all these days?) but we're on the second longest unbeaten home run in the Premier League and that will continue.

Bowen and Summerville both possible for Sunday. I'd like to add the former to the list.

If Bowen is back then without being a bit of a twat I'd stick some right meaty challenges in on him because there's no way he's fit and confident after breaking his foot.

I'd rest Watkins and Rogers in preparation for Weds.

Emi

Konsa
Mings
Digne
Youri
Kamara
McGinn
Malen
Ramsey
Duran

Subs Olsen Ned Maatsen Bogarde Garcia Buendia Bailey Watkins Rogers

Pretty much they will see for both as they don't want to rush them back. They might be on the bench I suspect.

So Duran scoring 7 in 600 minutes is not frankly ridiculous, but Ollie scoring 10 in 1540 minutes is? He has also scored in all the games he has started in this season apart from the Newcastle match, but then we know why for that one.

We've the second longest unbeaten home run in the Premier League. Our one home defeat was to Arsenal in August. We beat this lot a couple of weeks ago in the Cup. Our home form is WWWDWW.

Of course we have it in us.

I've never been this late with a prediction and yesterday's games have put a different slant on things. In an up and down season you'd guess that we'd beat them once in two meetings at home but I'm going for twice. They have Bowens Coaches back but then we could have SJM and our home record is good.

I hate games at this time, leaving the house at 2 on a wet cold Sunday afternoon isn't right, and I'm driving so alcohol can't help but it will be worth it. We'll keep plugging away in the league.

4-1

I’m hoping the fact we were utterly hopeless on Tuesday stokes a bit of a fire for this one. We have to get at West Ham, because they have some attacking talent but they are defensively very shaky. We need to be winning this.

I didn't mean today. I mean the 5/6 consecutive wins that would take, which would include 2/3 away games, in which we've mainly been shit.

We have three games now we need to be winning now if we're serious about qualifying for the Champions League next season. Let's try and get those over the line and then see. Personally I think almost all our games are too tight, for a handful of reasons, to put a run like that together.

I thought our home wins against Brentford and Man City were both convincing but conceding when cruising in both games meant they ended up feeling less convincing than they actually were.

Anyway, today’s the day. Villa 3-0 West Ham.

They'll have one eye on Wednesday, as will most fans. We've lost both league games after the last two CL away games, so really need to be on the ball today to avoid a third.

Personally, I think we'll come unstuck today, with a dour 0-0/0-1 result.

EDIT: Potter not a fan of Ings it would appear.
