The match tonight has me reminiscing about that game, the Graham Taylor one. The best atmosphere I can remember I think, or at least the most memorable. I'm looking forward to this last game at Goodison Park.
-
I've been twice, I think. The FA Cup QF in 2000, that was a great day out. The other game must have been in 96 as I remember the Everton fans were giving Southgate tons of shit for his penalty miss.....that was in the days where scousers liked the national team.
-
I went to the FA Cup Quarter Final in 2000, which may have been my first ever away game.
I remember the Scousers showed their trademark wit by shouting "fucking Brummie twats" after the game.
In fairness, they may only have been talking to CDBearsfan.

Was John Fashanu's debut up there?

Yes, a milestone in the club's rich history for sure.
-
Mersons last minute winner in the rain, 2000
Absolutely pasted them 4-1 in 98.
-
Went there in '78 for the F A Cup tie and saw Ron's team beaten 4-1 thanks to some really poor defending. Leighton Phillips was sent off in the second half.
-
The 3-2 win there still one of my favourite ever away days.
-
For one reason and another, the away ground I have visited most often, including last night. Rickety old place but I like it. Helps that I've seen a fair few wins over the years.
-
For me, the atmosphere for Taylor’s last game up there was only beaten last season at Palace.
Also remember playing up there early in the 93/94 season when Guy Whittingham scored our winner. We were in our green and black Asics away kit which clashed with the officials’ green and black kits so for the second half the ref and linesmen wore white Everton away shirts.
-
All the games up there mentioned on here I was at, it probably is the ground I've been to most outside Villa Park. There were some crap ones too, Boxing Day 1991 with Platt trying to knick a goalbound equaliser for himself in the last minute and inadvertantly clearing it off the line, and that game when that red nosed prick Schmeichel scored for us that we lost 3-2, in which me made Thomas Gravesan look like Zidane.

I was there for that one too. To be fair to Platt it was one of the most acrobatic clearances I've ever seen. How he got his foot that high I don't know.

Glad I'm not the only person still annoyeed by that, must correct myself though as it was 1990, not 1991.

First day of the 1998/99 season. Yorkie didn't try a leg, Gregory realised he was fighting a losing battle and that was it, our last world-class player hot-footed it out of here.

Apologies as I think I've posted this before but: My first trip to Goodison was 1966 at a time when we were really shit. Anyway, were were 2-0 down and an Everton attack was broken down and the ball passed to Alan Deakin RIP, with his back to goal, our goalie Colin Withers RIP had moved to towards the edge of the penalty area and yelled out "yes Al" letting Deakin know that the safety of a back pass was on, Deakin duly obliged by turning around and not just passing the ball back but believing Withers was further back whacked it! One of the best own goals I've ever seen.
A miserable day compounded by the the mardy coach driver who wouldn't let me on with me chips.

I was at Goodison in 1981 when Tony Morley scored the goal of the season. It was the game I started to genuinely believe we could win the league. A great old stadium.

Went to the FA cup match in 1978. One of those mad 70's away days. Walking into a Blue pub drunk as skunks at 12 only being saved from a kicking by doing the Dying Fly. Drinking with Toffees until 2:30, getting into the ground and then passing out until the second half. Andy Gray scored and I didn't know we were 4-0 down so went ballistic only to be brought down to Earth moments later. Massive scrap after the match. Mate went missing and we feared the worst. Back into the pub to find him with a head wound being treated by barmaids. More drinks and then back home. Still see the lad who had the head wound.

Like you, Dick, that win at Goodison convinced me we were in with a shout. Everton were in really good form at the time we played them (I think they had just knocked Liverpool out of the cup) and we could easily have beaten them by more than we did. I think we hit the post a couple of times, too.
-
Given our strong record there in recent times and the fact we've played them more than anyone else, is this the ground where we've won most of our away games?

Assuming this site (https://www.11v11.com/teams/aston-villa/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Everton/) is accurate, I threw it into Excel, excluded cup games and this is the overall record for League 1 and Premier League:
Villa at home:
D - 26
L - 28
W - 53
Everton at home:
D - 30
L - 29
W - 48

I idn't think we'd ever played each other in the third tier?

Mu first away outside the Midlands clubs was the 4-1 defeat in 1978.
-
Went there in Nov 99 for a drabbish 0-0, but the match was just punctuating an epic weekend visit of loads of us friends to Liverpool, legendary.
Was back there on my 26th birthday for the FA cup QF 2-1 in Feb 2000, such a great day.
More recently in Jan 2022 under that half wit Stevie G, brought my lad up for the 1-0 win.
Obviously a bit dilapidated now, but a great old ground and along with Villa one of the last of its kind.

1990 SGT 3-3
2000 - FA Cup QF
Ashley Young game.
Great times.
-
3-3 game. I was not behind the goal but in the stand to the left of the away end - we were all joining in at Half Time. It was actually annoying the home fans at one point.

Seem to remember a similar effort at the Baseball Ground the following September too.
Have been there loads, probably more than anywhere else, some great games but my favourite memory of there was probably the worst game of the lot. Got absolutely drenched in the lower tier, a group of about 50 of us singing non-stop all game in a bid to stave off death by boredom or cold, and then after 90 minutes of dross Merson lobs the keeper from 40 yards.
-
What a goal that was!
-
Tremendous but the timing of it made it all worthwhile!

The GT chant started at HT and didn't stop until after the final whistle then the great man came out onto the pitch to wave goodbye .
-
That 1990 game was an absolute belter and the send off for SGT was amazing.
-
Beautiful sunny day too , we all piled back and had a great BBQ that night .
-
I remember passing Knotty Ash on the way and doing a diddy man impression.
-
I was there for a none none (I think) when Dr Joe was in charge.

I thought that Venglos's only game at Goodison was a 1-0 defeat on boxing day. The one where Platt bicycle kicked a goalbound header off the libe denying us a last minute equaliser.
-
Yeah, that was amazing.
Kent Neilson's header, wasn't it?

You may be right I can’t remember anything about the game tbh, they were during my drinking days watching Villa.
Singing Jozeph Venglos claret and blue army (thinking this don’t sound as good as GT’s) is my only go to moment on that game
