Title: Aston Villa v Southampton Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Accent Guy on December 05, 2024, 05:59:40 AM
Well, I've only started on of these and we won so here we go.

Could really do with a clean sheet, as for all the "best keeper in the world" plaudits, it was one shot, one goal for Brentford and our goals against is unbefitting a top side.

That and we still have a minus goal difference to sort out. We could really do with our subs making a positive contribution in this one too.

Think Mings has to start again and we can play Torres against Leipzig, as Europe tends to be where he has his best form.

After this we face Forest, Man C115y, Newcastle and Brighton in the league as well as Leipzig in a crucial CL game, so this simply has to be 3 points.

Same team as yesterday and a routine 2-0 win. That should be enough for top 6 and what a difference a week makes.

Really hard to argue against playing the same side given how we played for most of the game. Hoping we can rest players in the second half before the Leipzig game.

Only thing is can Mings do 2 matches in 4 days.

Torres needed a rest for sure. I'd keep him for Europe.

Can't see why he couldn't..He's been kicking his heels for weeks on the bench since the Brugge game. Torres can come back in for RBL, his performances need to improve. It's that simple.

Mings absolutely has to keep his place, it would send entirely the wrong message if he didn't. He played the complete match so not like Emery brought him off as he has been doing with Kamara. Torres has to earn his place back now, which is how it should be.

I don’t agree that’s how it should be. We should play the best players for each game. There’s plenty of matches where Pau is the best option and plenty where Mings is.

Could see the end of their Manager if we do.

Same team please with only one tweek and that is Digne rested for Europe and Maatson to terrorise them down the left.

I don't agree with that at all. The defence has been running at nearly two goals a game against for a year, whoever the opposition is. Good teams are built on a solid defence, time to give Mings an extended run.

It’s little over 1 per game this season at home, where we tend to have more possession and have more control. I think Pau is more suited to those games. Away from home where it’s exactly 2 goals per game, I’d probably go with Mings, as we tend to be a bit more under the cosh. Not an exact science, as Mings was more suited to Brentford’s more direct approach, but is at least indicative of the positive of going game by game.

Just press them high up the pitch and abracadabra the ball is returned to us. Russell Martin has his principles but it is suicide when the opposition players are better than yours.

And ours really are

Southampton are this seasons Burnley. If Russell Martin plays his cards right with his football IQ he could end up with Dortmund and Soton will be back in the championship.
We should win comfortably but am reminded of that home game v Sheff United last season. So three points and a clean sheet please. 2-0 snooze fest would be ideal. No harm to rotate a few players ahead of RBL next week, Buendia might come in too.

Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen, Kamara, Barkley, Bailey, McGinn, Rogers, Duran.

Pau needs a rest, Mings needs games. If he's fit enough to play I'd go with Mings, even if it's just for his leadership on the pitch. Hopefully he'll have a very quiet afternoon but the midfield and strikers need to maintain the energy levels shown first half last night.

We should win at a canter but I'm still scarred by memories of a game against Saints around this time of year (well, early Nov) at the turn of the millennium. 25 years!

John Gregory's descent into coaching mediocrity loomed large in an awful match on a cold Saturday winter's afternoon at VP when Southampton won the day thanks to a late header from a corner, scored by Dean Richards (sadly, since died prematurely - always thought he was too good for Wolves and hoped we'd get him, especially after Ugo and Southgate moved on).

Football is a simple game and tomorrow is a simple game. Follow up a good performance with another, keep the form players in the side, accentuate the positive and to hell with the negative. The throaty roar of a 5 pints in Saturday 3pm at home will help, a foul and dark December afternoon, made for a match like this, a slightly festive atmosphere in anticipation of the years climax around the corner and a Champions League tie next up.

3-0

They make so many mistakes trying to play out from the back, we need to exploit that.  If the winds are going to be as bad as mentioned above, then punting it long won't be wise either.

Unless the wind's blowing towards their goal. In which case I'd suggest a Sensible Soccer type punt straight from kick off.

I'm off to London for a Christmas piss-up. I wouldn't fancy going to VP.

Are the trains ok in brum? If they are not operating  they may as well call the game off as not many fans will be able to get there

Is there any way of finding out before traveling?

Probably depends how far you have to travel.
In Liverpools case 90% probably travel 200 + miles.

Cross city lines seem to be running still, but with delays. Not looking forward to setting off. The wuss in me is hoping for the game to be called off!

The intrepid explorer in me desperately hopes the game goes ahead.
It’ll be fun to be out in ‘unusual’ conditions (for us) and should make for  a game that will be a little out of the norm.

We shouldn’t be protected from absolutely everything.
Of course, individuals will make their own decisions based on distance to travel etc, but in reality, how many of us are going to be ‘in danger’ travelling to and from the game ?

From memory I don't see why you can't do both. ;)

The 12:30 Leeds home game is going ahead so I don't see our game being called off . Be interesting to see the crowd numbers

My daughter got cross city line into brum this morning for work and it was running a couple of mins late, which is par for the course without the storm. Just looked online, running to time at the moment. Id say if they were going to call it, it will be in the next hour, although wind mph is supposed to stay about the same for k/o I think. With trains & buses running, i reckon itll be on.

Less than 20 miles between Everton and Wigan. Both have a 12:30 kick off time.
The Wigan game is still on (as at 45 mins before KO )

Windy and wet in Town. Not as busy as you would expect as people choose to stay away. Strangely the market around the Cathedral is shut but the Jarman Market is open as usual. That's a lot of trade to throw away...

This should be a never in doubt kind of result but so was Sheffiled Utd at home over Christmas last year.  Hope Archer isn't involved today, just in case.

App shows they are still running but visual inspection confirms the same train has been sat at Northfield for at least 35 mins.

Trains are running on the Aston side of the line, it's weirdly quiet though, as if people haven't realised they're running.
