Villa 4 Manchester United 0
Goals Hateley 2, Burrows and Deakin
Still our largest victory over them since the war and also famous for Denis Law being sent off.
Sidebottom, Wright, Aitken, Deakin, Sleeuwenhoek, Pountney, MacEwan, Ewing, Hateley, Wylie and Burrows.

I thought you had to virtually murder someone to get sent off in those days.

Stamped on Deakin (I think) whilst he was on the floor.

I pretty sure that's correct. I remember the game well.

My second Villa first team game. We beat Arsenal in my first. My 11 year old self thought it was always going to be that way.
-
My eldest brother told me that Law was sent off for kicking Alan Deakin in the teeth.

As a young lad I was standing at the front by the tunnel when Law was sent off. Still remember the abuse he got that day.

One of the apple cores was mine!

The genesis of cabbagegate?

That's a great report ALiTA. Eric Woodward, later to be Villa's press officer and Commercial Manager. Classic Argus match report - fine detail about pre-match happenings (including the mascot's experience and address). What sounds like an eventful first half covered pretty deeply and the second half, including a last minute goal, sketched into the final few paragraphs so that Eric could get his copy in in time for printing. Fabulous.

Yes, well done, ALitA.
