Wednesday 30th October.
Kick Off 7.45pm
No replays, no extra time.
-
We're playing well (and will, even with rotational changes) whilst they've got more pressing concerns. We'll win in 90 mins and get a shit draw.
-
Will be a weaker team
Olsen starting
Carlos and hopefully mings starting
Maatsen at left back
Duran JB and kamara starting i would imagine
-
If we play a substantially weakened side, then given we lack the relentless killer instinct needed for the title, that the trophy Emery is on about is the European Cup.
That said, I don't think it's possible to field too weakened a side unless you're doing it deliberately.
Gauci
Ned
Carlos
Mings
Maatsen
McGinn
Barkley
Kamara
Philogene
Emi
Duran
-
Olsen
Nedeljkovic Carlos Mings Maatsen
Bailey Barkley Kamara Jaden
Buendia
Duran
I hope we go stronger than this though.
-
We've had a few league cup encounters with them. The best was a 2nd replay in 1978 when we took over Highfield Road.

0-2

--------- Olsen -----------
Ned Mings Bogarde Mate
---- Kamara - Barkley ---
JPB -------------------Buendia
--- Duran -------- Wilson --
-
I'm not sure it will be seem as a priority to he honest, but it's one game away from a quarter final.
-
were in the best shape we've been in for decades, have a genius manager but we do need to win something to make it worthwhile and count
28 years is ridiculous and needs to be put right under Emery
my fear is that while we can compete the league and CL might be out of our reach just now,
so that leaves this cup and the FA cup and i'm not sure we will have the same intensity in those competitions, you only have to read some of the coments on this thread to see how people see our priorities,
i dont want us to end up empty handed when theres a perfect opportunity of getting our name engraved on some silverware
-
Realistically this is the best chance of a trophy. Not many rounds to get to the final.
-
I just like the fact that I have a ticket for a seat over the halfway line for £30 including charity round up. Actually feels reasonable...
-
Palace have the relegation zone over their shoulder. I imagine they'll be even more distracted and in a mind for rotation than we will be...
-
Not going to this one. Whatever side we pick i really hope we win and then into the QFs? As others have said we need to win something
-
--------- Olsen -----------
Ned Mings Bogarde Mate
---- Kamara - Barkley ---
JPB -------------------Buendia
--- Duran -------- Wilson --
Zero chance Wilson is starting with his contract situation. I imagine Ramsey/McGinn do 45 minutes each or Kadan Young gets a go. The other ten look right though
-
--------- Olsen -----------
Ned Mings Bogarde Mate
---- Kamara - Barkley ---
JPB -------------------Buendia
--- Duran -------- Wilson --
Who's our other nr9's in the reserves / u21 's ?

-
Wilson?! He's not even been on the first team bench, has he? More chance of Young getting a go or Stefan's young fella, Mooey Jr.
-
I want us to take the cup on Wednesday seriously for once. I think we’ve got a reasonable chance this year. There’s no real excuse for not being able to field a decent team given all the injury returns.
-
--------- Olsen -----------
Ned Mings Bogarde Mate
---- Kamara - Barkley ---
JPB -------------------Buendia
--- Duran -------- Bailey --
I've put Bailey in as i think Emery will be trying again to play him back into form / fitness
-
We have the squad to give this a real go this year and it would be disappointing not to even if I understand the basic rationale.
-
I have visions of Emi Buendia winning this competition single-handedly for us while his boss rests him from league and Champions League games.
He becomes a cult hero and in the 2050s still visits Brum with his namesake but is now Martínez's equal.
-
If our starting eleven contains players who have been in the match day squads regularly this season then we should probably win. I think there are two issues though;
- He might go massively under strength and start the likes of Sil Swinkles, Kaden Young etc. as he did at Wycombe.
- He probably won’t play Emi, and Joe Gaucci is extremely untested.
-
I dont think palace wilm go strong either tbh
-
Sweden's best keeper for 7 consecutive years
Cash
Mings
Bogarde or DC
Maatsen
Barkley
BooBoo
Jaden
Emi 2
Leon
Chaos Panda
-
I reckon we will beat Palace 2-1 and progress into the next round.
-
Personal circumstances preclude me from attending despite the fact that I love the competition and want to see us win it again. My feelings are not mirrored by Emery so we undoubtably we'll field an understrength side, although we could be strong given the players available.
Possibly the only negative of the managers reign is the meek exits from the domestic cups and for the majority he has been utterly justified but I'm one of those odd people who would rather win the FA Cup than the CL. Perhaps not the LC over European glory but it runs it close. An odd stance it may seem but it was the first trophy I saw us win in the flesh back in '94 and I really don't think anything will top it.
I think I will be disappointed on Weds night.
0-1
-
No need to go overly weak in this:
Olsen
Ned - DC - Mings - Maatsen
Kamara - Barkley
Bailey - Buendia - Philogene
Duran
Essentially the subs bench from Saturday plus Ned and Jaden. That’s a team that should be good enough to progress here.
-
Surely he'll play Gauci rather than Olsen? I don't see what the point in spending a few million on Gauci was if he's not as good as Robin Olsen.
-

The last two benches would suggest not.
-
Cant believe olsen is ahead of gauci
Think gauci is more long term option and looks better than olsen
-
Olsen has done well of late when called upon .
-
I reckon you work out what the team for the Spurs game is then flip it.
So, for Spurs game -
Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Pau, Digne, McGinn, Onana, Tielemans, Ramsey, Watkins, Rogers
For the Palace game -
Olsen, Cash, Bogarde, Mings, Maatsen, Bailey, Kamara, Barkley, Philogene, Duran, Buendia

Agreed, think it will be mostly along those lines. I'd be surprised if Mings starts against Palace though, be nice to see him get on at some stage for some minutes, he still seems a bit behind Kamara on being match fit.
-
Mings to start? That would be good but i think more a sub appearance
-
Olsen has done well of late when called upon .
Ahem - his last game was Palace 0-5
-
play Gauchi .. Dont think Mings will start but love to see 25 mins .
-
Emery could Chuck his son in goal for this.
-

Ahem - his last game was Palace 0-5
They were all MIA that day so it don't really count
-
Emery could Chuck his son in goal for this.
Chuck? Thought his name was Lander.
-
Looking at the ties, Liverpool, Chelsea and C115y all have tough away ties and could all feasilbly go out . Which if we beat Palace would leave us favourites
-
Even if that happened, we'd be unlikely to be favourites with Arsenal, Tottenham and Man U still in it. Obviously would depend on the draw.
-

yep the draw is key if we get through
Chelsea or Man Utd away and it goes the way it always goes i'm afraid to say (yeah i know thats the spirit)
-
Going to this one, so really looking forward to it. I'd love a Buendia hattrick, but would settle for a dodgy, controVARcial own-goal to take us though.
Growing up in the 90s, I have a strong affinity for the League Cup - I think Villa are intrinsically linked to it. So it's really about time we won it again.
-
We better win this again before Keir bans it.
-
Olsen has done well of late when called upon .
Ahem - his last game was Palace 0-5
And he was totally let down by his partying team mates.
-
Gauci
Cash Carlos Bogarde Mastsen
Kamara Barkley
Philogene Ramsey
Beundia
Duran
Not sure about this one. Palace are in a false position in my view, Eze is a player and Matete is big and strong and has caused us problems in the past, presuming they play. I can see a tough game with our inevitable changes.
I’d take a 2-1 (Duran, Beundia).
-
Doubt Palace will be anywhere near full strength
-
Just read they only changed three players for their game in the last round against QPR.
-
Doubt Palace will be anywhere near full strength
They don't really have a choice but to play almost full strength as they have fuck all in reserves. They'll get murdered if they don't
-
I think we will toil and go out with a whimper.
-
I do wonder if clubs ever come to a gentleman's agreement before the match about the type of starting line-ups they put out.
-
Doubt Palace will be anywhere near full strength
They only made three changes in the last round, and one of those was due to an injury. Hopefully they have one eye on what appears a fairly vital game against Wolves at the weekend, but I'd guess they'll play more first team players than us.
-
Doubt Palace will be anywhere near full strength
They don't have another strength and they are in a much better position League wise than they were in Round 3.
-
If you're not in Europe, I don't think there is an excuse for not going full strength in the cups. You might end a season playing just 40 games if you get knocked out in the first round.
Palace will pick strong. We'll do well to win this one given that we won't be at full strength
-
Is the game on Villa TV
tried to figure it out put can not see if it is or isn't
Only game of the round not on local TV
-
Palace have a huge game away at Wolves Saturday so i think they will prioritise that. I'm expecting 4 to 5 changes.
They will also look at the teams left in this and know that even if they get past us they aren't going much further .
-
especially with wolves not playing in the week .

Weird ticket take up. Lower Holte and Upper Holte pretty full bar the wings. Same with the Trinity bar the two blocks in the third tier. Witton pretty full, upper North almost empty.

Doesn't look like it, just the normal away section.

Palace still selling tickets to this on their own website

3rd home game in 8 days, on tv, unexciting opposition. In hindsight should have charged a tenner.

In hindsight a freebie for purchasing all 3 CL fixtures might have been an idea.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Upper North either. Was in it once for a SHA game, didn't sit there again.

Bit wierd that only two games today and rest tomorrow

kids for a quid UN , just fill it
-
And now a GA sell out. Quite a few GA+ and Hosp tickets available.
-
Bit wierd that only two games today and rest tomorrow
The schedule has been influenced by last week's European matches.
ManU, Spurs and Chelsea played in Europe on Thursday, so their weekend games were on Sunday, which in turn pushed their Carabao games (and those of the teams they played) forward to tomorrow.
Liverpool v Arsenal was TV Sunday game and so their Carabao games were also pushed back.

They wouldn't fill that if it was the Champions League Semi Final.
-
And now a GA sell out.
so in 3 hours the UN has gone from barely sold to sold out ?

They’ll be on secondary sites for £2.50 in the morning

I’m away for a couple of days so missing this. Hopefully the atmosphere won’t be similar to the Everton league cup game last year, it felt at the time this really impacted upon the performance.
-

No, I don’t believe that either!
-
Just had another look and there’s seats available all over! Utterly bizarre. I went on and looked and there were no GA left. Then a mere hour later there’s availability everywhere. (Throws hands in the air)
-
Being lazy, is it on the telly?

Every League Cup match is televised this season.

So whats it gunna be tonight..
Shit team and out with a whimper again...or..
Strong team and march into the quarters ?

Disappointing that BV possibly didn't geddit considering he's usually sharp as a tack.
Anyway, when we held the 1994 League Cup, I have vague memories of young hot-shots Gareth Southgate and Chris Armstong grabbing a brace each for Palace as we got dumped-out the following season. One of Sir Brian's first games in charge.
Just found the highlights. We scored a well-worked opener through Dalian. Unfortunately, the night was another one of those "horrible ones" at Selhurst Park:
-
I think that Unai will start with the eleven he would choose as if we were playing the Champions League final tonight!!
It's all very well having a full squad to choose from but pointless if your preferred starting eleven are not 'match' fit. Let's be honest, we have been brilliant on occasions this season but at times we have also been shit.
For the first time, Unai has a chance to start his preferred strongest eleven, give them match time, get some continuity and make tweaks as this game and the season progresses.
Unai also said he wants a trophy. I believe him.
2-0 to the villa.

more chance of Halley's comet making an appearance
-
C'mon Baldy, don't be naive.
-
I'll be very very surprised if he starts his first 11. Can't see it at all
-
Im hoping that Kamara and Buendia get full starts. Bailey finds some form, same for McGinn.
Tyrone makes an appearance at some point to a heroes welcome.
We "boringly" win 2-0 and get a minnow in the next round at home.
If Carlsberg made Wednesday evenings.............rather than shit beer

I know it’s on Sky.
I have Sky Sports but can’t see where.
Can somebody help this old man?

From Bham Live

I was gonna go tonight, I'm a ST holder with ST card and need E-ticket for entry, went to VP about midday and ticket office not open till 4pm.
Rang the TO was 27th in queue, I just cant be bothered with this jumping through hoops, same for every game I have to purchase additional tickets for !
That's £75 quid they aint getting
>:(
-
Did we even bother with a "presser" for this?
-
If they go strong then I can see this game being a close one.
I can see Cash playing along with Ramsey, Barkley, Bailey, Maatsen and Duran starting with Mings Buendia and Kamara coming in. The rest is anyone’s guess. We have a decent squad now and it’s good we can still put out a half decent team.

If this cup is his lowest priority, tonight is the night to get his perceived strongest eleven on the pitch and let them get match time, an understanding, a shape, some continuity etc. Chopping and changing every match will get us nowhere.
Why not start tonight. Nothing drastic. My strongest eleven would be:
Martinez
Konsa Mings Pau Digne
Kamara Tielemans
Bailey Rogers Ramsey
Watkins
Ideally, make 5 substitutions during last 30 minutes.
The sooner we have a settled starting eleven the better. IMHO :)

SSN are saying Mings & Kamara ‘set to play’. So they’re not promising anything, but here’s hoping.
Killed two birds with one stone by taking the babby to his barbers in Perry Barr, allowed too much time and so we’re in the ground already. Haven’t been in this early (corporate excepted) since the Barcelona game in 77/78, when we came straight from school to get a good spot against a barrier.
-
Mings is definitely starting
-
He is such a fantastic ambassador for the Villa and speaks so well. If anybody is coming back as strong as before, I really hope it's him (I'm pretty sure Kamara is going to be fine already).

Our starting 11 will have to get the job done as there's not much on the bench and Palace have put out their strongest side by the looks of it.
