We're playing well (and will, even with rotational changes) whilst they've got more pressing concerns. We'll win in 90 mins and get a shit draw.

Will be a weaker team

Olsen starting
Carlos and hopefully mings starting
Maatsen at left back

Duran JB and kamara starting i would imagine

If we play a substantially weakened side, then given we lack the relentless killer instinct needed for the title, that the trophy Emery is on about is the European Cup.

That said, I don't think it's possible to field too weakened a side unless you're doing it deliberately.

Gauci

Ned
Carlos
Mings
Maatsen

McGinn
Barkley
Kamara
Philogene

Emi
Duran

                  Olsen
Nedeljkovic Carlos Mings Maatsen
Bailey  Barkley  Kamara Jaden
                 Buendia
                  Duran

I hope we go stronger than this though.

We've had a few league cup encounters with them. The best was a 2nd replay in 1978 when we took over Highfield Road.

were in the best shape we've been in for decades, have a genius manager but we do need to win something to make it worthwhile and count
28 years is ridiculous and needs to be put right under Emery

my fear is that while we can compete the league and CL might be out of our reach just now,
so that leaves this cup and the FA cup and i'm not sure we will have the same intensity in those competitions, you only have to read some of the coments on this thread to see how people see our priorities,
i dont want us to end up empty handed when theres a perfect opportunity of getting our name engraved on some silverware

Realistically this is the best chance of a trophy. Not many rounds to get to the final.

I want us to take the cup on Wednesday seriously for once.  I think we’ve got a reasonable chance this year.  There’s no real excuse for not being able to field a decent team given all the injury returns.

I have visions of Emi Buendia winning this competition single-handedly for us while his boss rests him from league and Champions League games.

He becomes a cult hero and in the 2050s still visits Brum with his namesake but is now Martínez's equal.

Post by: TaxDodger on October 27, 2024, 04:42:19 PM
If our starting eleven contains players who have been in the match day squads regularly this season then we should probably win. I think there are two issues though;

- He might go massively under strength and start the likes of Sil Swinkles, Kaden Young etc. as he did at Wycombe.
- He probably won’t play Emi, and Joe Gaucci is extremely untested.

Post by: Nev on October 28, 2024, 07:50:21 AM
Personal circumstances preclude me from attending despite the fact that I love the competition and want to see us win it again. My feelings are not mirrored by Emery so we undoubtably we'll field an understrength side, although we could be strong given the players available.

Possibly the only negative of the managers reign is the meek exits from the domestic cups and for the majority he has been utterly justified but I'm one of those odd people who would rather win the FA Cup than the CL. Perhaps not the LC over European glory but it runs it close. An odd stance it may seem but it was the first trophy I saw us win in the flesh back in '94 and I really don't think anything will top it.

I think I will be disappointed on Weds night.

0-1

No need to go overly weak in this:

Olsen
Ned - DC - Mings - Maatsen
Kamara - Barkley
Bailey - Buendia - Philogene
Duran

Essentially the subs bench from Saturday plus Ned and Jaden. That’s a team that should be good enough to progress here.

Surely he'll play Gauci rather than Olsen? I don't see what the point in spending a few million on Gauci was if he's not as good as Robin Olsen.

I reckon you work out what the team for the Spurs game is then flip it.

So, for Spurs game -
Martinez, Konsa, Carlos, Pau, Digne, McGinn, Onana, Tielemans, Ramsey, Watkins, Rogers

For the Palace game -
Olsen, Cash, Bogarde, Mings, Maatsen, Bailey, Kamara, Barkley, Philogene, Duran, Buendia

Agreed, think it will be mostly along those lines. I'd be surprised if Mings starts against Palace though, be nice to see him get on at some stage for some minutes, he still seems a bit behind Kamara on being match fit.

Even if that happened, we'd be unlikely to be favourites with Arsenal, Tottenham and Man U still in it. Obviously would depend on the draw.

Going to this one, so really looking forward to it. I'd love a Buendia hattrick, but would settle for a dodgy, controVARcial own-goal to take us though.

Growing up in the 90s, I have a strong affinity for the League Cup - I think Villa are intrinsically linked to it. So it's really about time we won it again.

Cash                Carlos       Bogarde         Mastsen

                        Kamara     Barkley

Philogene                                                Ramsey

                                 Beundia

                                  Duran

Not sure about this one. Palace are in a false position in my view, Eze is a player and Matete is big and strong and has caused us problems in the past, presuming they play. I can see a tough game with our inevitable changes.
I’d take a 2-1 (Duran, Beundia).

They only made three changes in the last round, and one of those was due to an injury. Hopefully they have one eye on what appears a fairly vital game against Wolves at the weekend, but I'd guess they'll play more first team players than us.

If you're not in Europe, I don't think there is an excuse for not going full strength in the cups. You might end a season playing just 40 games if you get knocked out in the first round.

Palace will pick strong. We'll do well to win this one given that we won't be at full strength

The schedule has been influenced by last week's European matches.

ManU, Spurs and Chelsea played in Europe on Thursday, so their weekend games were on Sunday, which in turn pushed their Carabao games (and those of the teams they played) forward to tomorrow.

Liverpool v Arsenal was  TV Sunday game and so their Carabao games were also pushed back.

Every League Cup match is televised this season.

Not the best 11 and struggle into the Quarters after penalties.

upper North almost empty.

Grim

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Upper North either. Was in it once for a SHA game, didn't sit there again.

👍 very good, ALITA: it’s grim up north.😊

Disappointing that BV possibly didn't geddit considering he's usually sharp as a tack.

Anyway, when we held the 1994 League Cup, I have vague memories of young hot-shots Gareth Southgate and Chris Armstong grabbing a brace each for Palace as we got dumped-out the following season. One of Sir Brian's first games in charge.

Just found the highlights. We scored a well-worked opener through Dalian. Unfortunately, the night was another one of those "horrible ones" at Selhurst Park:

I think that Unai will start with the eleven he would choose as if we were playing the Champions League final tonight!!

It's all very well having a full squad to choose from but pointless if your preferred starting eleven are not 'match' fit. Let's be honest, we have been brilliant on occasions this season but at times we have also been shit.

For the first time, Unai has a chance to start his preferred strongest eleven, give them match time, get some continuity and make tweaks as this game and the season progresses.

Unai also said he wants a trophy. I believe him.

2-0 to the villa.

Not a chance with the 3 away games coming up next week.

Im hoping that Kamara and Buendia get full starts. Bailey finds some form, same for McGinn.

Tyrone makes an appearance at some point to a heroes welcome.

We "boringly" win 2-0 and get a minnow in the next round at home.

If Carlsberg made Wednesday evenings.............rather than shit beer

If they go strong then I can see this game being a close one.
I can see Cash playing along with Ramsey, Barkley, Bailey, Maatsen and Duran starting with Mings Buendia and Kamara coming in. The rest is anyone’s guess. We have a decent squad now and it’s good we can still put out a half decent team.

If this cup is his lowest priority, tonight is the night to get his perceived strongest eleven on the pitch and let them get match time, an understanding, a shape, some continuity etc. Chopping and changing every match will get us nowhere.

Why not start tonight. Nothing drastic. My strongest eleven would be:

                      Martinez

Konsa          Mings         Pau        Digne

              Kamara      Tielemans

Bailey                Rogers          Ramsey

                     Watkins

Ideally, make 5 substitutions during last 30 minutes.

The sooner we have a settled starting eleven the better. IMHO  :)

Probably right after Monday's shindig, but a pity. He is an integral part to playing out from the back which has gone pear shaped recently.

SSN are saying Mings & Kamara ‘set to play’. So they’re not promising anything, but here’s hoping.

Killed two birds with one stone by taking the babby to his barbers in Perry Barr, allowed too much time and so we’re in the ground already. Haven’t been in this early  (corporate excepted) since the Barcelona game in 77/78, when we came straight from school to get a good spot against a barrier.

Our starting 11 will have to get the job done as there's not much on the bench and Palace have put out their strongest side by the looks of it.
