Title: Aston Villa: On This Day
Post by: Exeter 77 on October 21, 2024, 07:35:20 PM
In a similar vein to the On This Day thread in Off Topic but specifically for Villa.

Just an excuse for me to post my favourite ever Villa goal - Tony Morley's second here.

43 years ago today Dynamo Berlin 1 Aston Villa 2

Reminds me of Dalian's brace at Hillsborough in 1992, two goals that were so good it was hard to say which was best.

I can vividly remember getting home from school and checking teletext to see we'd drawn Inter, and being beyond excited by it.

I can vividly remember the Inter game.  I was just 16 and went to the game with my older brother who is an Albion fan - I even remember meeting him at the station.  Memorable because I had never been to a game with him before, it was always my other brother who took me to games when I was younger, but I can't remember where he was for this.

I was stood right behind the piss-missile from Nielsen.....what a goal.  I remember Cowans bossing the game that night.  I also remember being disappointed with Inter not filling their allocation of tickets for such a big club (not to mention big game in my eyes).

The forty yard pass from Sid would come after he had run thirty yards to slide in from behind an opponent to take the ball off him ,get up and turn without touching the said opponent who would still be wondering where the ball had gone.

My two favourite memories of Sid.

1. An astonishing cross field pass to set up Daley I think for a goal away at Wimbledon.

2. His run and finish for the first goal against Everton in the 6-2 in 1989 live on itv.  In front of less than 18k!

30 October 1937, we drew 1-1 at home to Coventry in front of 67,000 fans. Still a record attendance for a 2nd tier game I think.

Also on this day in 1886 we beat Wednesbury Old Athletic 13 nil in the Cup.

We used to have a 'Dads Team' from the kids Junior school, Andy Comyn turned out quite a few times for us. He was a really nice modest fella, almost seemed embarassed talking about his Villa days. I think at one point we could have turned out close to an entire team who had played in the top divisions in England.

Loved visiting his shop. Had the privilege of buying my first ever Villa scarf from the man himself there back in the day. Always remember the clutter inside and the cricket bat door handle. That scarf travelled to many third division grounds and made it to Rotterdam - good value!

Today in 1981, with Villa already 1 up from a Peter Withe header, Kenny Swain carried the ball out of defence on the right before backheeling it to Gary Shaw. Gary then split the Liverpool defence with a pass which allowed Dennis Mortimer to slide the ball past Ray Clemence. If I close my eyes I can still see it unfolding.

Dennis Mortimer’s goal is one of my favourite Villa Park goals. The simple move from defence to attack was almost ahead of its time and Unai would be proud if we scored a goal like that with our current squad.

I was 14 back then and this victory made me realise that we could actually win the league. Happy memories indeed.

30 years ago today Mark Bosnich completely took out Jurgen Klinsmann - and got away with it - but the incident was completely overshadowed by Eric Cantona having a few spectator issues at Selhurst Park. A brilliant curled pass down the touchline from Steve Staunton set Dean Saunders up for the only goal of the night.

For some reason lost in the mists of time I was absolutely fucking fuming after that result. I remember storming out the ground in a foul mood while everyone else seemed to be happy enough. For me, it summed up just about everything of all the 90s missed opportunities. I didn’t set foot inside Villa Park for 6 seasons after that.

IIRC Yorke fluffed a gold plated sitter after an unbelievable run by Joachim at the away game

Yea I travelled to that game. We actually played well and it seemed a good result but losing 1-0 away was a killer with the away goals rule. Fantastic trip though. Remember being in a bar with Nigel Kennedy before the game!

The home leg was a great game and we were a bit unlucky to go out in the end.  Collymore scored a great goal and their keeper with the dyed blonde hair made a great save at the end to deny us the goal that would have put us ahead on aggregate.

Yep, that was a big save from Hendrie who tried to bend his shot inside the post but didn't quite make it past the 'keeper's hand.

On this day in 1996 Savo’s thunderbolt put us on the way to battering Dirty Leeds out of all recognition at Wembley.

The last title winning Villa captain was born 73 years ago today. Happy Birthday Dennis Mortimer.

And on a more minor but still significant note Thomas Hitzlspeger in 43 today.

1993 Villa 0--0  Coventry. They celebrate a 0-0 like they've won the world cup and we get halfway out of Aston before we learn the ref has added on extra minutes until Man Utd score to beat Sheff Wed. Bastards.

35 years ago today Chris Price scored his first Villa goal as I yet again put watching Villa ahead of my imminent A-levels and it was absolutely worth it.

"He'll never score as long as he's got a hole in his arse"

A statement from one of our lot on the Clock End shortly before the goal.

Thanks PWS, I enjoyed watching that again.

Who else is overcome with the sweet intoxication of nostalgia?

No, me neither.

2015 we lost at home to Burnley and started to think that maybe Tim Sherwood wasn't going to lead us to world domination.

A week before we'd been smashed 6-1 at Southampton, with Tim applying the most brainless tactics I think I've ever seen.

A week after the Burnley defeat, we were hammered at Wembley.

The same to you all.

A time when success was more based on merit and didn't mean you then had to sell a couple of your best players.
