In a similar vein to the On This Day thread in Off Topic but specifically for Villa.
Just an excuse for me to post my favourite ever Villa goal - Tony Morley's second here.
43 years ago today Dynamo Berlin 1 Aston Villa 2
-
First one isn't half bad either
-
Reminds me of Dalian's brace at Hillsborough in 1992, two goals that were so good it was hard to say which was best.
-
Yes I remember those and the two Alan McInally got against Millwall!
-

Neil Ruddock scored with a thunderbastard for Millwall in that game too.
-
2 years of Unai today. What a ride so far.
-
43 years ago today Gary Shaw scores twice v Wolves in the league game in between two legs of a league cup tie against the same opposition.
And 34 years ago today Kent Nielsen's finest hour (which makes me feel really old!)

I can vividly remember getting home from school and checking teletext to see we'd drawn Inter, and being beyond excited by it.
-
I can vividly remember the Inter game. I was just 16 and went to the game with my older brother who is an Albion fan - I even remember meeting him at the station. Memorable because I had never been to a game with him before, it was always my other brother who took me to games when I was younger, but I can't remember where he was for this.
I was stood right behind the piss-missile from Nielsen.....what a goal. I remember Cowans bossing the game that night. I also remember being disappointed with Inter not filling their allocation of tickets for such a big club (not to mention big game in my eyes).
-
Today in 1958 Gordon Sidney Cowans was born.
-
..as was the concept of passing the ball accurately up to forty yards off either foot.
-
The forty yard pass from Sid would come after he had run thirty yards to slide in from behind an opponent to take the ball off him ,get up and turn without touching the said opponent who would still be wondering where the ball had gone.
-
Yep, that was our Sid!
-
..as was the concept of passing the ball accurately up to forty yards off either foot.
By a seven year old in Aldershot.

I got that, which I'm impressed with as he left the club a few years before I was born.

This!!!
-
My two favourite memories of Sid.
1. An astonishing cross field pass to set up Daley I think for a goal away at Wimbledon.
2. His run and finish for the first goal against Everton in the 6-2 in 1989 live on itv. In front of less than 18k!
-
30 October 1937, we drew 1-1 at home to Coventry in front of 67,000 fans. Still a record attendance for a 2nd tier game I think.
Also on this day in 1886 we beat Wednesbury Old Athletic 13 nil in the Cup.
-
And 34 years ago today Kent Nielsen's finest hour (which makes me feel really old!)
We used to have a 'Dads Team' from the kids Junior school, Andy Comyn turned out quite a few times for us. He was a really nice modest fella, almost seemed embarassed talking about his Villa days. I think at one point we could have turned out close to an entire team who had played in the top divisions in England.
-
Chico Hamilton born on 31 October 1950
-
Six years ago today Alan Hutton wrote his own small bit of Villa folklore.
-
More importantly though the man who walks on water was born today in 1953.
Happy 71st birthday Brian Little.
-
Happy Birthday Sir

Happy 71st birthday Brian Little.
Which means it is 30 years to the day since he became our manager. it was his 41st birthday.
Where have the years gone.
-
Something I have only just found out is Brian was born on the same day that Hungary beat England 6-3 at Wembley.

This will resonate with those of us of a certain vintage who bought Villa stuff from his shop in the 1970s and 1980s. Harry Parkes was born today in 1920. Thanks to the AVFC History BlueSky account for this one.

Loved visiting his shop. Had the privilege of buying my first ever Villa scarf from the man himself there back in the day. Always remember the clutter inside and the cricket bat door handle. That scarf travelled to many third division grounds and made it to Rotterdam - good value!
-
Just seen on this day in 1983 - We played Northampton in the FA Cup 3rd round - won 1-0 with a brilliant Mark Walter's goal
I was there that day a 3 sided ground - it does not seem that long ago (I am very old!)
-
Today in 1981, with Villa already 1 up from a Peter Withe header, Kenny Swain carried the ball out of defence on the right before backheeling it to Gary Shaw. Gary then split the Liverpool defence with a pass which allowed Dennis Mortimer to slide the ball past Ray Clemence. If I close my eyes I can still see it unfolding.

Withe's goal wasn't a header, and I only know that as the goals came up on Twitter today.

Dennis Mortimer’s goal is one of my favourite Villa Park goals. The simple move from defence to attack was almost ahead of its time and Unai would be proud if we scored a goal like that with our current squad.
I was 14 back then and this victory made me realise that we could actually win the league. Happy memories indeed.

You're right and I knew that do not sure why I wrote it like that. I think I was too busy thinking of Tony Morley (my favourite player in yhat team) turning Richard Money inside out

9 years ago yesterday we beat Palace 1-0 to register our first league home win, this was the line up.

Dear Gods - what a line up. I have gone cold...
At least there was a strong bench……!!
-
If i remember correctly it was freezing cold and their goal keeper dropped the ball over the line.
Absolutely awful team and season!
-
5 years ago today Ezri Konsa thought he'd got his first Villa goal with a stoppage time winner against Watford only to be told in his post-match interview the ball had flicked Tyrone Mings on the way into the net.
-
I went to that game and felt for all money that Ezri had got the winner.
He looked really upset when he heard the news!

I remember being on Teaching Practice in Erdington and phoning in sick so I could get to this one and getting there by a combination of buses and trains and taking nearly all day to do so. Worth it though. A tad better experience than Monaco! ;-)
-
30 years ago today Mark Bosnich completely took out Jurgen Klinsmann - and got away with it - but the incident was completely overshadowed by Eric Cantona having a few spectator issues at Selhurst Park. A brilliant curled pass down the touchline from Steve Staunton set Dean Saunders up for the only goal of the night.
-
10 years ago today we beat Bournemouth 2-1 in the FA Cup, Delph signed a new contract and it was the last win under Lambert.
-

A quirk I remember about this game was that, as Bournemouth had beaten Blues 8-0 at St Andrews earlier that season, they had scored more league goals in Birmingham then we had by the time of the game.
-
Carlos Gil who we thought was going to be world class scored a great goal.
-
I posted on another thread that Carles only scored three goals in his eighteen months with us, but they were all absolute crackers.
-
Jimmy Rimmer 77 today.

11 Feb 1995

Vowden and Lochhead for us and McDougal's diving header for them.

My first ever game, I was 11 and went with my now late Dad and Uncle, what a noise that day, still feels the loudest I ever experienced at Villa Park (or anywhere else for that matter)
-
Yep. I think we scored two goals in three minutes after being behind for about half an hour in a four-point promotion clash. Almost immediately, Chico Hamilton was inches away from scoring a third. The noise almost took the Holte roof off!
-
My dad used to take me to Harry Parkes’ shop, think I got my first tracksuit from there c 1981 Umbro, a work of art.
-
35 years ago today Sid Cowans gave a passing masterclass on a terrible pitch at The Hawthorns as well as heading their best chance off the line.

Possibly my best Holte End standing experience ever.
-
Me too.
-
In addition to the League Cup Final 50 years ago today three years later Johan Cruyff gave a bit of a masterclass until he went off with Barcelona 2-0 up. Ken McNaught and John Deehan dragged us level in the last couple of minutes. Allan Evans, playing up front on his debut as a sub, caused the Barca defence a few problems.

2014 Benteke tears Norwich apart as we score 4 in the first half.
2019 Jack vollets in a beauty against Derby as we score 4 in the first half.

When I read your post hurriedly, I thought, "What does Grealish want with a vol-au-vent?"

Good for soaking up the booze mid session.
-
Is that the voice of experience speaking?
-
10 years ago today we put the Albion back in their cage. Shocking scenes at the final whistle, reminiscent of the very worst days of the 80s as thousands of Villa fans invade the pitch, dragging our reputation into the gutter. I’ve got a great photo of me and Pat in the goal area in front of the Holte.
-
Wheras the real thugs were in the North Upper, raining ripped-up seats at the Villa fans below.
An Albion-supporting mate of mine was near the front of the NU and he nearly got brained by a flying seat.
But they're such a cute club, aren't they?
-
This day, 27 years ago, we went out to Atlético Madrid on away goals in the Uefa Cup quarter final. One of the big 90s nights.
-
Also the day we beat Dinamo Kiev in the quarter finals second leg. As a youngster I remember Villa supporters calling them “bloody Ivans” which is very ironic given recent history!
-
Superb performance against AM and so unlucky to go out. One of Dwight Yorke's worst games for us, in terms of missing clear chances. Very good sub impact from a young Hendrie.
Amazing atmosphere!

Can anybody remind me why we wore our away kit even though we were at home?

For some reason lost in the mists of time I was absolutely fucking fuming after that result. I remember storming out the ground in a foul mood while everyone else seemed to be happy enough. For me, it summed up just about everything of all the 90s missed opportunities. I didn’t set foot inside Villa Park for 6 seasons after that.

I went to the first leg, we were shit that night and quite fortunate to come away only 1 down.

IIRC Yorke fluffed a gold plated sitter after an unbelievable run by Joachim at the away game

Yea I travelled to that game. We actually played well and it seemed a good result but losing 1-0 away was a killer with the away goals rule. Fantastic trip though. Remember being in a bar with Nigel Kennedy before the game!
-
The home leg was a great game and we were a bit unlucky to go out in the end. Collymore scored a great goal and their keeper with the dyed blonde hair made a great save at the end to deny us the goal that would have put us ahead on aggregate.
-
Yep, that was a big save from Hendrie who tried to bend his shot inside the post but didn't quite make it past the 'keeper's hand.
-
2014 we lost 1-4 at home to Stoke.
-
On this day in 1996 Savo’s thunderbolt put us on the way to battering Dirty Leeds out of all recognition at Wembley.
-
2014, Benteke did his achilles tendon in training.
-
The last title winning Villa captain was born 73 years ago today. Happy Birthday Dennis Mortimer.
And on a more minor but still significant note Thomas Hitzlspeger in 43 today.

6 April 2013. We beat stoke 3-1 away. Lowton worldie.
What a shit team this was.

They were shit but what a day and one of the best terrace mentals of the last 15 years after Lawton’s worldie.
-
1993 Villa 0--0 Coventry. They celebrate a 0-0 like they've won the world cup and we get halfway out of Aston before we learn the ref has added on extra minutes until Man Utd score to beat Sheff Wed. Bastards.

35 years ago today Chris Price scored his first Villa goal as I yet again put watching Villa ahead of my imminent A-levels and it was absolutely worth it.

2015 we lost at home to Burnley and started to think that maybe Tim Sherwood wasn't going to lead us to world domination.

A week before we'd been smashed 6-1 at Southampton, with Tim applying the most brainless tactics I think I've ever seen.
A week after the Burnley defeat, we were hammered at Wembley.

Happy Rotterdam Day!

The same to you all.
A time when success was more based on merit and didn't mean you then had to sell a couple of your best players.
