I love reading that stuff.

Am I right in thinking that we used to play on Christmas Day as well as Boxing Day?

From what my Dad & Grandad used to tell me, that was the case. Usually local derbies.

A Wolves fan I knew, lovely bloke, said they'd walk to Villa Park on Christmas or Boxing Day because there was no public transport.

One thing I would say regarding the article is that Darwen spent another season in the top flight, our first championship season of 1893/94. They got there on merit having finished 3rd in the first Division 2 season and beaten Notts County (third bottom in Division 1) in a test match.

Small Heath were the first Division 2 champions but lost to Newton Heath in their test match so didn't get promoted.

There was a logic to Darwen because if the original 12 six were from Lancashire and six from the midlands!

Clearly expected them to evolve into a better team than they did :)

yep its amazing how close those Lancashire clubs are - i saw virtually all signposted on the way to Burnley last year.

there was also a symmetry with European Cup winners when it was just Manchester United, Liverpool, Forest and us.

Lancashire and midlands.
