From what my Dad & Grandad used to tell me, that was the case. Usually local derbies.

Post by: Meanwood Villa on October 18, 2024, 06:30:43 AM: One thing I would say regarding the article is that Darwen spent another season in the top flight, our first championship season of 1893/94. They got there on merit having finished 3rd in the first Division 2 season and beaten Notts County (third bottom in Division 1) in a test match.

Small Heath were the first Division 2 champions but lost to Newton Heath in their test match so didn't get promoted.

there was also a symmetry with European Cup winners when it was just Manchester United, Liverpool, Forest and us.

Lancashire and midlands.
