Big Daz never sleeps.

Sorry Dave.
-
Absolutely brilliant Dave. I haven't stopped grinning since the game.
-
Exactly how I feel Dave…..everything off the field about the club makes me cynical / angry / frustrated and gets language usually only saved for awful referees….but the moment I climb those 6/7 steps off the concourse into the panorama of VP nothing else matters….its Villa & I’m home. Nights like Wednesday don’t come round round often
-
Enjoyable read, the amount of half and half scarves was indeed an eye opener.
-
Was that me with my two children? I’m offended. I’ve brought many more than two!
Lovely article. Insightful, cynical and romantic.all at once.
-
Hi Dave, I have a question if I may. I don’t know which individuals/groups are left on the FAB but is it possible they might all resign given the lack of engagement from the club, and would the Premier League then get involved as mediator? Just wondering how the situation might come to a head and whether similar has happened at other clubs.

I doubt it.

Maybe some of the half and half scarves were bought by regular fans as souvenirs of a great event?
-
My daughter asked me on the walk down 'Dad, if you don't want a half/half scarf for this, our biggest match in ages against a team we wont play again, are there any circumstances that you would buy one, or me one?'
'No'.
-
I was delighted to see that all the season ticket holders around me in the Holte end, who were there in the dark days of 2019 and years after, were there on Wednesday. Holte end still feels like it always has, can’t speak for other areas. Is it noticeably changing?
Great article, much I could grumble about re pre match experience but once we kick off, as you say, it’s football and it’s the mighty Villa and all is well.

I think it was a brilliant night to bring children too, a great investment in their future Villa support. Beating one of the European giants in that atmosphere would make them the envy of their peers at school the following day. It will stay with them for the rest of their lives and ensure they are Villa for eternity.
I like the thread title too. More than a nod to Marlene Dietrich.

I’ve no doubt the majority were, but surely the red half could have been hidden away until they got home.
Back in the day I remember my mom saying that scarf won’t keep you warm tied round your wrist. She also used to say “Stop moaning and be grateful”.
Great article.

Great read Dave.

Poignant words as ever Dave!

Good point about hiding the red half!

I normally cringe at the thought of a half and half Scarf, but after I saw lots of other buying them, it made me think that I would like a momento of what would be an historic win (yes I had a feeling we would) and it was also my birthday, so the date being on also meant something to me
I did hide it in my coat pocket for the game though and gave to my boy the next morning who was buzzing with it
-
Great read Dave.
Thanks Daz.

I posted this on FB on Weds before the game.
"A few years back.. I had two hobbies, in fact one was a love affair, following Aston Villa, and the other was fishing.
Most of what occurs in these sports revolves around a weekend due to me working Mon to Fri and the football and fishing fixtures
It was impossible to do both properly, due to time conflicts, financial and family ties.
I chose fishing.
Tonight I'll be watching the game with my son on the box, Sunday I'll be fishing a match and listening to it on the radio. I hope that everyone in there tonight and Sunday really appreciates what special times these are.
Did I make the right decision in picking fishing over football... I think so.. Im still mates with my football pals.
Am I jealous as f**k of everyone in there tonight? OH YES
If youre there tonight get behind em.. Give em a shout from me
UP THE F**KIN VILLA"
Looking back after Wednesday, what I saw on TV, the atmosphere, the noise, colour, passion, the will to win the ball, bodies on the line, I've never enjoyed a game on the box so much, I watched it with my boy, who's 14 and Villa daft, we had a beer or two together and had a real special time watching it together, even more so as he's lost his mother 4 weeks ago, so it was a proper special time watching one of our greatest nights, and his mood visibly lifted ( thats what football does ) I do wish we'd been there in person.
Ive found if you take time away from actually going to the game, it becomes a habit, and something takes its place. and since giving up my season ticket in 2008, Ive probably been to 50 games, mostly when someones shifting a spare, but the love never leaves you, you see something like Wednesday night, or Man City last year, and you know, you just know that one day you'll be back there, next time itll be with the new wife and lad in tow, passing the baton onto him. Hes already done a few games with me as a toddler but hes really got the bug now. Short term its the Firestick and fishing rods ..long term .. who knows
Sunday is 48 hours away, and I'm almost tempted to forget to set my alarm, but I have a feeling Ill still be on the river bank listening to us do United like I did for Emery's first game, I nearly fell in the river when we went 2-0 up that day, I was jumping around like Zeberdee on acid.
as per the post title falling in love again... this week has summed it up perfectly
-
Don't really like them, but those half & half scarves were just about forgivable the other night.
Anyone who buys one on Sunday though should be banned for life and shot in the face with a harpoon.
-
Done.
-
Brutal. Shouldn’t you have at least waited until Sunday though?
-
Never mind the scarves, the flags were half n half as well. Left mine under the seat… humph.

I thought the same. As we were walking down Trinity Rd from the church end and approaching the car park there was a large queue, we looked at each other and said it was long to get in the holte end, it turned out they were queuing for a programme. Much the same I would think they were mostly bought as a memento of a famous night.

It's easy to get carried away with all the media hype at the moment especially when seeing videos like this... https://youtu.be/PBbFuXI0EmA ... but with it lays the seeds for destraction and the enevitable fall.
Let players and fans alike walk that media hype tightrope in humility. Keep our sights laser focussed and our steps sure footed to avoid us falling into that pit of poisonous egos and abnoxious arrogance.

I was lucky enough – and old enough – to be at Rotterdam but I enjoyed Wednesday even more. To be in VP with that atmosphere, family members beside me was wonderful. Back then we enjoyed it for what it was, now we look forward with anticipation. I’m still buzzing.
If you had pitched this story last Tuesday you would have been laughed at.
“A club who had their most glorious match 43 years before finally manages to enter the competition again. The first game at their iconic home ground is, coincidentally against the team that they beat to win the trophy 43 years earlier. This team is one of the favourites to win it again. The fans are super excited and this includes the players who played in that famous match. Then 2 weeks before the game, one of the class of ’82 dies tragically at the young age of 63. Emotional tributes are paid at each game played with away fans joining in. The first goal scored in the competition - at the away ground, wears the squad number of the deceased player. The match at home begins in a feverish atmosphere and with 15 minutes left the number 9 enters the field. This is the squad number of the scorer 43 years before. Within 10 minutes he scores an amazing goal and the match ends with the scoreline 1-0. The crowd are ecstatic and universally the club is lauded as one of the best teams in the country and beyond. “

Great read Dave particularly the last sentence.
-
Very good, thank you however this bit puzzled me "The night after, when my mate rang me". Mate?

Scarf tied around the wrist. Those were the days
-
Never thought I'd encounter the day when the NOW sport package felt like less of corporate rip than actually going to VP but here we are
-
Great article Dave. The only difference for me is that the Club will have to work very hard to keep me as a season ticket holder next season. Everything Heck is doing is pissing me off and I feel a disconnect with the club just now. People were moaning about the CL prices but, I agree that, if we make the knock out rounds, you ain’t seen nothing yet. I’ve been a season ticket holder through all the thick and thin years but, not prepared to pay the stupid prices no matter even if it was Bayern. Good luck to all those that went to it as a one off match but, who we probably will never see again unless we draw a big name in the next round!! That sums up PL clubs nowadays, sod the old faithful fans as long as we can get some tourists to replace them. Enough is enough.
-
I used to think the half and half scarf thing was massively corny. But I now just file it in the who cares category. Let people enjoy the experience as they want. I’m not buying one ever but doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. I’m sure the Villa fans wearing them were every bit loyal Villa fans.

The horrible bit is that the won’t be trying hard to keep any of us…we’ll get the price & the date to renew and that will be as much as they try to keep any of us….thats of course unless they decide they want any of our seats for the nonsense GA+ then they’ll tell you they are taking your seat and you should be grateful they might offer an alternative.

After years of being a ST holder I didn’t renew this season for a number of reasons. I watch every game at home with a few beers and I’m not missing going to VP at all.
Never ever thought I’d say that but what’s going on off the pitch has killed it for me.

And the club doesn’t make a penny out of them. You got to feel for Heck.

They’ll have made a good few quid out of the official ones in the club shop

Unfortunately Heck doesn't realise this, in the next 12 months we will lose a lot of fans who have been priced out or can't take being mugged off. If we drew Real Madrid in the knockout phase I hate to think how it would be priced.
