I feel like it’s a big game for JJ today - need him driving from midfield in the absence of SJM.

Good that Carlos and Philogene are fit after all. Not that familiar with their team although Jack Clarke can be a tricky winger.

I think Carlos needs a few games to get match sharp, so picked today in the hope he’s up to speed by Bayern.

I forecast a 2-1 loss but that line-up has allayed a lot of my concerns.

Now, 2-1 to the villa.

That's the first time I've looked at their team on paper. That front three is decent and the midfield is okay too, if Phillips finds his form. Muric isn't a bad keeper. Don't know much about the defence, barring Axel. If it's any good then they could have enough this season.

Might be a tough game today.

I agree, decent enough team. Ogbene is a good signing for them, Delap is decent, as is Hutchinson.
Ill always have a soft spot for Tuanzebe for the promotion season and that song..

Ipswich are no mugs. The only teams who have beaten them are Man City and Liverpool.  Yes, they're winless, but they aren't being battered like a lot of teams that come up after a long time outside the top flight.  They also have a couple of very talented youngsters in Delap and Hutchinson.  Plus some reasonable Premier league experience in key positions in Philips, Tuanzebe, Ogbene and O'Shea.

We should be beating teams like this, obviously, but I'd say they're actually a lower mid-table side rather than relegation fighters.

This won't be the walkover some are imagining.

(I hope I'm proven wrong extremely quickly, obviously)

Yep definitely no mugs. A dangerous from three, Ogbene is a good midfield player and Pearce is looking like a snip at the back.  They invested wisely

I’d like to see Emery rotate more for games we should be confident of winning. Especially with such a big CL on the horizon. Obviously don’t want too many changes, but had he picked say 2 for from Barkley for Onana, Maatsen for Digne or even Duran for Ollie we still should have enough about us to see the job through. We ran out of steam by the end of the season (or the MON effect as it’s also known) due to injuries to key players. Need to make sure we protect as many as possible over the course of year. Still it’s Emery and he prioritizes the league above everything, so hopefully in a couple of hours we are sitting in 2nd.

I think at the moment the better idea is to start games like this strong, and make changes as early as possible. The top 9/10 teams are pretty close at the moment. We don't get all 3 points here and we're at risk of dropping to 9th the next week.

I’m glad we are playing a team with the same level of attacking menace as Bayern in preparation for the game next week.
Kane got injured yesterday. Fingers crossed he'll be out for Wednesday.

Watched the game. Kane was hopeless, barely had a kick.
Why have you done this? lol.

Our defence, and defending generally, is just far too casual. We need to sharpen up and make sure we don’t concede.

We’re exciting in attack but we ask too much of the attack every week. In all likelihood they’ll need to score another, because we’ll concede another sloppy goal.

I don’t think it’s that. It’s a promoted side without a win this season trying really hard and unsettling us. Throw in some very poor play from us defensively and we don’t look convincing. But these are games we need to learn to play in and overcome. We’ve not been great this season but we’ve won all but one game. It’s quite impressive.

Carlos is a liability, and Pau, for all his excellence on the ball, defensively isn't great. We need Mings back as soon as possible.

We've just seemed way too casual across the pitch today. There is a massive difference in quality between the teams so if up the focus then we should win the game comfortably

Watching him walk inside our penalty area as the Ipswich player moves past him to shoot and score is a first for me. His goals are hiding some below average performances. Right now I'd rather see Barkley playing there. At least Barkley is awake.

There’s some truth to that. The one thing I’d point to is Onana walked into our side whereas we’ve seen other new signings being introduced more carefully. Emery talks about players understanding the process and how he wants them to play. Look how long it took for an experienced player like Tielemans. So Onana is learning on the job so he’s going to make some mistakes. He’ll only get better as other players have. Kamara for me is still the senior of the two players in the Emery system.

That was bad, Konsa moving forward with the ball, no one covering the space he left though it seems Emery screaming on the touchline nearby to get some done on that. Our style og play is not to get into players and have a fight so if we are going to win this need another superb move(s). But seems more plausible now that they fight another one into our net.

Konsa needs to come off, or go to centre back.  He has been really poor at right back today.

He's a shocking right back...the metric merchants on here will try and say different but he's terrible with and without the ball when he plays there. All our problems have come from the Konsa/Carlos axis today

Man City looked plenty good and would have won away to Newcastle - quite a different proposition to Ipswich - if not for an incorrectly awarded penalty.

Very poor and defensively it’s a worry.
We haven’t lost but we have a right back on the bench who surely could’ve played today, leaving Konsa at centre half.
Maybe Wednesday is in their heads a bit but we will have to up this 10 fold to even stand a chance. A decent start to the season overall but it’s definitely 2 points dropped today.
