The time has come to ask the question and discuss our two forwards:
Should it be Watkins or Duran or Both?
Emery has made his comments . What do you think ?
Emery on the competition between Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran up front: "I'm happy, I want it. I want our players competing, each one to increase and add quality for us. Of course they are two strikers in good form and last year they played together sometimes. Last year their connection wasn't so good on the pitch."
"But Jhon Duran is getting mature, he is getting confidence. Ollie Watkins, after his small problems and after he came trying to get fitness quick, progressively he is feeling better and they can play individually or they can play together. Of course I want the best of them from here until the end of the season and I am happy it is those players in this form."

In a similar vein to should Watkins or Ings or both start ?
Pau Torres or Mings and the Coutinho or Buendia debate there's the question of who starts and can they or will they play together effectively.

I mean it's pretty clear it's a worthy debate.
Duran the form and upcoming striker the pretender one could say
Watkins the main man and established player.
There is competition now and it's a discussion to be had for those who want it.

Mock all you like. But this is something that will be at forefront of discussion this season with the competition between the two syrikers.
Duran has such a high potential and his goals to minutes ratio is outstanding. Then we have Watkins who is proven but slowly getting back to form and fitness. He now hasn't scored in 8 games in the league.
Recent form:
Duran has scored the winner in two away games this season and made the difference against Liverpool last home game of the season
Jhon Duran has scored seven Premier League goals despite making only three career starts in the division. His tally of six goals as a substitute since the start of last season is the most of any Premier League player
Watkins has not scored for Villa since April in the league
He last scored for Villa in early May in Conference league semi.
-
TLDR
-
We have a pre match thread, totally unnecessary.
-
It could be Watkins or Duran, Watkins and Duran, Watkins and A N Other, Duran and A N Other or A N Other or An Other or A N Other and A N Other or neither, depending on who Emery picks.

This is for the whole season!

Thank you BE at least you're discussing said topic.
It certainly interesting the choice to be made and that Emery said yesterday "Of course they are two strikers in good form and last year they played together sometimes. Last year their connection wasn't so good on the pitch."
This prompted my curiosity and think it's deemed very worthy of discussing.. thank you for at least understanding!

Goodness have we lost the ability to debate and discuss?
Emery said yesterday they can play individually or they can play together. So that's what I'm asking and encouraging debate to who you would start or if would play them together.
Maybe it needs a few more matches for people to get on board but I think it's quite a discussion topic.
Duran level is very high and he would be a likely start for a lot of other Prem teams. Certainly over half the teams in league would love him. I even think he would start for Chelsea or Man Utd maybe even Spurs or Arsenal and Liverpool
Same as Watkins being better than what most have in the league:
Duran or Jackson - Duran
Duran or Solanke - Duran
Duran or Jota /Nunez - Duran
Duran or Havertz - Duran
I would say Isak is on par. And only Haaland better than either Watkins or Duran
-
Ordinary World was better than Blame it on the Boogie. (Duran v Jackson).

This really just could have been discussed in the match thread, and your constant drive to start unnecessary threads, and then continuously bump them is extremely tiresome. When's your next holiday, out of interest?

I’m merely trying to debate a very important topic of discussion!
I will leave now and return after the next cyber update I mean international break.

I'm not sure you've ever had it. That said in an individual match thread there's an opportunity to discuss what might be best baased on who we're playing, who's in form, if there are any injuries, what the schedule looks like, etc. All of which fits into the well established mtch threads we have on the forum.
If you want to spread the discussion to cover the whole season then there's nothing to discuss, Watkins will start games, Duran will start games and sometimes they'll both start games so the only answer that makes any sense is yes.
-
This really just could have been discussed in the match thread, and your constant drive to start unnecessary threads, and then continuously bump them is extremely tiresome. When's your next holiday, out of interest?
Well, I never meant to annoy you or anyone, it just came to mind after reading the comments about Watkins and Duran and thinking it was a good debate. I only wanted to contribute to the discussion. I seem to get on the wrong side of you and others without intending to, and I wonder how much is my fault and how much is due to people's differing views on what constitutes good discussion.
The only intentions are positive for the HandV community. I will not start any more threads until the end of October! As a challenge to myself and that I hopefully be treated more fairly in doing so
However, I will bump any threads that I consider necessary, and they are not all mine I just do it because its the thread that most appropriate to put my thoughts . So at moment Tielemans and Emery's appearance on the main discussion board first page appeals to me in particular because I see them as key.
Okay, let's get back to being respectful and reasonable?
I won't write in this topic till after the game, but most likely tomorrow, thank you.
And apologies to anyone who misunderstands my aim to dispute topics about which I am fascinated or excited! But please don't drive me away and not make me feel welcome, it's not a great feeling.
I will always listen to reasonable suggestions and people being honest. I will also do whatever moderator orders but I certainly didn't intend to spoil site.

I don't think so. It could be part demographic, part technology as the forum ages and gradually becomes home to Millenials and various lost souls should really be on TikTok or Instagram 'Reels'.

How about we all post on, or ignore, topics we're interested in or not, respectively?

Hey Footy-Vill,
Let’s get straight to the point: it’s clear from your post that you’re frustrated with how things have been going. While I get that you’re passionate and want to contribute to the discussion, it’s crucial to recognize how your approach can affect the overall tone of the forum.
If you want to be taken seriously and avoid rubbing people the wrong way, it’s important to think about how your comments come across. Sometimes, it’s not just about the content but also the delivery. If you want to bump threads or add your thoughts, make sure it’s done in a way that adds value rather than stirs unnecessary conflict.
It’s good that you’re willing to take a step back and reflect on how you’re contributing, but let’s make sure your future posts are more constructive and respectful. Everyone’s here to enjoy the discussion and support our team, so let’s keep that in mind and avoid making things more complicated than they need to be.
Let’s move forward with a better attitude and focus on keeping things respectful and reasonable. No one wants to drive you away, but we do want a positive and engaging environment for all.
-
Or, alternatively, you could just carry on being exactly who you are and if you don't fit in their box...fuck 'em.

Your problem is Footy. My problem is you.
If you ignore Footy, rather than queuing up to give him a kicking every time he does something you don't like, then I no longer have a problem. That feels like the best solution to me.
-
Footy doesn’t need you to be his knight in shining armour to come to the rescue. He’s the most attention seeking poster on here and gets miffed when others don’t agree with him, his endless need for validation and recognition as seen by the mindless threads he starts or bumps because others don’t find the topics interesting. The problem is Footy, and yes we could all ignore it. But when’s it’s literally on every thread it’s impossible just to walk past. He’ll have a hissy fit eventually, declare his departure and come back in a month. As he/they/it always does.
-
Or, alternatively, you could just carry on being exactly who you are and if you don't fit in their box...fuck 'em.
Yes.

If footy was a Bot then the constant replies would be just be feeding the AI algorithm and making it worse. This thread is three pages long and there’s barely a response on the topic.

People could just do what Dave W asked them to. As crazy an idea as that is.

I see the debating has started
Exactly what I was thinking !
Would have had a hat-trick today given the same chances Watkins had.
Deserves to start for a few games. We've got some nice fixtures now and Watkins can come on from the bench.
For me it's clear.
Big D must start.
Completely disagree. I think we get the best out of Duran when he's coming off the bench with a chip on his shoulder. Keep him angry!
It would probably keep Ollie on his toes too. He's still the main man but he's going to have to perform at his very best week in week out if he's got Duran doing that every week.
It's fascinating to see what going to happen and if both will play !
-
It could be Watkins or Duran, Watkins and Duran, Watkins and A N Other, Duran and A N Other or A N Other or An Other or A N Other and A N Other or neither, depending on who Emery picks.

Hardly a case closed is it ! It has only just began.

Should it be Watkins ? Duran? or both?

Absolute nonsense.
But what a couple of strikers we have
Its not nonsense. He's outscoring Watkins from the bench and despite his two goals today, Ollie still looks a bit short of sharpness. Missed a few sitters. Duran would have had at least 3 today had he started. He definitely deserves a run in the starting 11.
It is. You can’t use scoring goals as a reason to start someone, whilst at the same time also suggesting someone deserves to be dropped after scoring two. I’m ignoring the fact that Duran would also score all the imaginary goals.
-
I think we're seeing a genuine superstar taking off on front of us, 3 goals off the bench to win 3 games, each magnificent in their own way.
i said the same somewhere else Lee. Three superbly taken goals all different and all taken without any hesitation. Ollie is outstanding in his own way, but he's just not doing what Duran does. It's something about that South American madness about him, oryou see it in African players too who score some fucking screamers. To even think about what he did in that moment, so far out. The shot itself literaly couldn't have been any more perfect. Immense power, swerve and beat the current England keeper who is a very good shot stopper. In fact no keeper was stopping that.
Come on guys let's play fair. Now in a debate regarding our strikers who are you starting v Young Boys and next week at home to Wolves.
Surely you can now see it makes sense I raised the topic
-
Form is more than one match. That's why Ollie should be dropped.
Ollie's all round performances haven't been great.
Of the two, Duran is the one in form. Not nonsense at all.
I see you are saying Duran should be the current starter.
Certainly be interesting to see him start ahead of Watkins and impact Watkins makes off the bench position.
I like to see them both play to be honest and actually Rogers could miss out as he's the one not firing so for me Watkins AND Duran
In Sky commentary they made the claim that Duran said 'hes better than Watkins '
Certainly Duran strikes the ball probably the sweetest striker in league.
-
Thirty-nine replies, seems like a popular thread. I'd like to try them both together from the start on Tuesday, might be fun.
-
With Bailey out there's a good case for them both being on the pitch together at the moment as Ramsey/Rogers/McGinn just aren't quite there with their final ball/shot right now. We are getting consistently in to good positions though which bodes very well
-
FFS.....why do we need to debate this bollocks. We are a CL team, we have two top class strikers. They will both get plenty game time this season.
-
Unai Emery is there to answer the so-called striker 'debate'. He will sort it out by being demanding in our way. My contribution to the subject of this thread. I will now not post again until the next time I do.
-
If Durans efforts in training replicate his effort and attitude that he portrays on pre match warm ups he is miles away from being considered as a regular starter. Granted once on the pitch he is explosive. Just what you want from your substitutes (finishers). This will help greatly increase his value for the January trading and possibly enable the purchase of a world class striker potentially relegating Watkins to the bench. Unai knows what he is doing and what he wants. I imagine he’s looking years ahead not just games.
-
Ordinary World was better than Blame it on the Boogie. (Duran v Jackson).
Correct.
-
It should be Watkins. Or Duran. Or both.
-
It’ll be predominantly Watkins, Dhuran sometimes and both of them when tactics necessitate.
-
I reckon Whatkins and Dhuran will get games, and goals.
-
What would it mean for how we play if we were to start both? We do seem to have a lot of options in midfield at the moment, could we do something completely different from how we normally play, or would it be a case of just starting them both and hoping the formation and tactics still work?
Playing one or the other is a good option to have, but it's not likely to keep them both happy in the long term. Sure Duran seems to gave gotten his head screwed on over the summer, but he's kind of put his money where his mouth was, so to speak, already and we're only 4 games in.
-
If Jhon Dhuran doesn't move to Celtic it will be disappointing.
-
Blur or Oasis?
-
Neither
-
I think it s fine how it is with Duran replacing Watkins after 60 and some minutes. Question is if it will keep Duran happy enough.
-
Neither
I like Beetlebum.

Unai Emery on the Striker debate :
"Duran potential is huge and I want to support him, help him and be demanding with him. Then he can possibly get better, more confidence and today Watkins scored two goals - you have to feel comfortable with those strikers. We have to think about how we can play with two strikers - this is the challenge I have."
I think it s fine how it is with Duran replacing Watkins after 60 and some minutes. Question is if it will keep Duran happy enough.
It seems El Maestro is now working on a plan on how to play with both Watkins and Duran.
-
Thirty-nine replies, seems like a popular thread. I'd like to try them both together from the start on Tuesday, might be fun.
Unai Emery himself is looking at the challenge of playing both.
As for Duran, I've said before he is almost the perfect player to bring on against a tiring defence. I know he wants to start, but his impact coming on for the last 30 mins is unbelievable. I still think Watkins is the better fit as our starting No 9, but I desperately hope we can keep Duran.
Yes, this is where my head currently is. I noticed on Saturday that he was running around at 100mph, chasing the ball-carrier from the back; something he wasn't so keen on doing.
Also, with the goals he's scoring this season, opponents are going to be well-sighted on the danger he poses: I think we'll find him getting a much tougher time on the pitch; which will test his temperament.
Personally I would be starting both Watkins AND Duran.
-

-
He should absolutely be starting. He takes his chances.
Watkins scored tonight never a handball.
Personally I'm thinking Rogers may have to be out for Duran and Watkins as if you're talking about taking chances Rogers seems unable to actually finish ability of Watkins or Duran and maybe have to look at options because Rogers plays support striker at the moment and Watkins and Duran could dovetail nicely as the two instead.

Nothing wrong with having 2 quality strikers at the club with the season we have ahead. Enjoy and let Emery manage them both . Working well so far albeit Watkins should be on about 6 goals not 2.
Agreed. We should not be afraid of that at all as a fan base. Ollie isn’t storming out of the club if he’s not picked every so often. The biggest clubs rotate their best players so they are fitter across the season and because they have that many good players they have to keep the squad happy. We need to do that also and not hit ourselves of one of the traditional starters gets a game or two off.
I ask do you think they can play together?
Would you play them from the start together?
-
Hmmmm. I’d have put my money on Duran taking the chance that Watkins mis-controlled off his knee in the first half when through on goal.
Based on current form, if Duran had the same chances Watkins’ has had so far this season then I reckon we’d be joint top of the league.
If they were both on the pitch he would score more ? Emery said they didn't connect well last season and he's saying it's a challenge hes working on in how play both of them
Watkins isn't 100% fit. I think have to be fair. Would you start both ?
-
If we keep playing well as a team whilst winning there is no need to play them together....Play either or and protect fitness levels for the entire season.
As the season goes on i would consider starting Duran over Watkins a few times
-
I'm generally a big fan of your work but it's getting a bit obvious and repetitive now. Kind of like when Weller used to bring out an album pretty much every year.
Maybe restrict yourself to fortnightly trolling or something.
How dare you!
-
Problem with starting with both is you lose your options from the bench to mix things up.
Watkins is clearly better with the press out of possession, if Duran can improve this team element of his game, he’ll find himself starting more games other than the occasional one to lesson Ollie’s workload.
Unai does though need to find opportunities in games when we are in control of games to try them together to help their understanding for those moments where we are chasing games and throwing the kitchen sink in the last 15/20 mins.
It seems when he does this he prefers Ollie up top with Duran in the hole, which is different to the usual big man up top with the runner feeding off scraps we were all brought up on
-
I think the main point people need to remember is that it's going to be a long, hard season, and even without injuries, it's just not possible to play 60 games and maintain the same levels throughout. We saw this with Watkins as the end of last season, who got to 19 goals and then just ran completely out of steam.
-
Durans biggest weakness is protecting the ball but that can be taught. His left foot reminds me of Rioch.
-

Yeah! Paul is always bursting with ideas, don't busy-shame him.
-
I know Ollie will absolutely insist on playing but I'd be inclined to sit him on the bench at the weekend and make absolutely sure that foot recovers. Big Jhon can handle the Dogs. We could well see a couple of changes and then I suspect wholesale changes against Wycombe.
Duran's finish last night was filfth. I'm baffled as to how far back VAR can look, because from handball (Onana had no one on him so had it not scuffed his hand he'd probably have done nothing different) to the goal was about 20 seconds and 7 passes. It's more feasible a decision than Ollies granted.
There's been a lot of debate as I suspect regards should it be Watkins , Duran or both.
I do think can't just forget how important Watkins is for us.
Emery has said it's a challenge for him how to fit them both in the team.
-
Why can Man U, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal all keep multiple top players in the same position and we can’t for fear of upsetting them?
Because none of them are Jhon Duran.
All of those clubs over the years have had players who wanted more playing time. That’s part of being in a top side. Jhon Duran can only get better which would mean a better side with even more competition and even less guarantee of first team football. He’s seeing that now based on what everyone at the club seems to saying regarding his focus and attitude. He’s just a young kid, with age of talent maturing in front of us in real time. You get the outrageous talent and occasional petulance. The closer Ollie gets to 30 and closer to the end of his peaks years we will see the rise of Jhon Duran as his successor.
This is an ideal world scenario which we’d all like
But do you honestly think Duran and his agent are going to sit around waiting for Watkins to get a bit leggy before he gets a chance to be the number one striker
What’s going to happen when one of those teams you mention slap 70 million for him maybe even as soon as January
Don’t forget he wanted to go a couple months ago, he would’ve gone if someone stumped up 40 mill,
Alvarez left Man City because he wasn’t getting game time behind Haaland, Harry Kane please every game is under city is a big part player, Duran won’t settle for that
I’m just leaving in the real world asking real questions
Welcome to my world.
I asked should it be Watkins , Duran or both and there seems to be little forthcoming with an answer
-
I think Duran is excellent, and I love that he's ours, however, Watkins is reliable, scores goals, works hard and has his head screwed on.
I want both, and with the games we've got, and the way it's working, I don't think it's an either/or choice.
It's very much an either or regards starting it seems.
Would you start Duran ahead of Watkins ?
-
He's a better finisher than Watkins but he can't link play like Watkins can. However, to have two great strikers that are so different is a great problem for the manager to have. Presently, I reckon the last 30 mins of a game is just right.
That's fair assessment.
Starting Watkins and Duran together would be interesting combo though but it can impact dynamics of the team
Real Madrid have adapted with Mbappe so it's funding right system for these two to play together for me.
-
Seeing Taremi and Thuram 2 strikers starting up front for Inter against Man City I hope that's what Emery does when go away to Man City.

It also means not having to play Ollie every minute of every game - which is useful in terms of his recovery between games.
And without jinxing it, fewer minutes for key players is useful as fatigued players are more likely to get injured. UTV

Ok I sense you're annoyed I will endeavour not to keep bumping this thread if I find that people are posting on other threads when technically should be debating here.
Mentioning Christ and the good lord though perhaps in not the most prayerful terms but get the emphasis so take it from me I will write here only where deemed necessary but most importantly do my best not to put other comments from other threads here unless really need too !
Point taken Corey.

It also means not having to play Ollie every minute of every game - which is useful in terms of his recovery between games.
And without jinxing it, fewer minutes for key players is useful as fatigued players are more likely to get injured. UTV
The fact that Watkins and Duran have such different styles is a great problem for our manager to have and a nightmare for the opposition manager to have. Duran is the better finisher which he's proved in devastating fashion. I don't think Unai's going to start many if any games with both on the pitch but I think we'll finish plenty with them both on the pitch.

Unai Emery on the debate between Watkins and Duran:
After Young Boys
"Now we have Jhon Duran in good form. They can play together Duran & Watkins. As well, today Watkins plays 60 minutes, another 30 minutes for Duran. Of course, we need both, together, and individually, adding his capacity on the pitch in the time we need.”
-

Ashley Young yes.
Agbonlahor does have the Prem goalscoring record.
Regards a comparison to the Title league and Euro winning strikers of the 80s Withe, Morley, and Shaw I haven't seen them, but they must be better as they won.
They are rightfully part of history, we can't compare those current three, though Watkins could be regarded as one of our greatest strikers in modern era. Duran potentially can go far.
-
So Duran comes on when 1-0 down as a partner for Watkins not to supplement .

Watkins scores with JD on pitch not replacing him but playing together!

Bet we start neither next game

Watkins and Duran didn't end the game together and I think Duran scored when Watkins was off the pitch.
Both scored which is just fantastic!
I think with Ginny injured there's an opportunity for JD to start with Watkins.
A two up front scenario

Interesting words on the Watkins and Duran playing together debate
Emery said:
"It’s my challenge to try to get the best of (Duran) him, playing as a striker, playing with Ollie Watkins. The idea is they will play more together"

Vs Ipswich Watkins started Duran bench and came on to play together.
Only given 20 mins of time on pitch together and little evidence there was any link up play .
Duran on 64.
Watkins was subbed off 84.
-
I thought they we got worse when we played both on tbh
-
A thought With Ramsey injured there's a chance for Duran and Watkins both starting ?
Watkins could even play wide left forward.
On TNT it was interesting to hear Ash Young talk about Watkins after Ferdinand suggested he was a confidence player.
Youngy said "Ollie is a worrier"
When asked after Duran must be considered to be starting because he's scoring Youngy said " Ollie scoring as well so he doesn't think he drop him"
Though way Duran keeps performing it is going to be worrying Watkins. I do hope something can be worked out for beneficial of team and having both on the pitch together.
-
Vs Man Utd Watkins starts.
Duran on the bench.

fascinating insight that certainly isn't already common knowledge and not on the match thread. can you not just pack it in, this thread is fucking joke at this point
-
Duran did come on 64th mins and he partnered Watkins instead of replacing him. Bailey made way instead.
In commentary it was suggested Rogers and Watkins have built up and understanding which also contributed to fact Duran isn't starting.
Didn't see much evidence of link up play between Watkins and JD.
I'm wondering if it's a Watkins and Ings scenario.
-
With Duran coming in and scoring for Colombia on international duty I would give him the bench role again on Saturday v Fulham and start Watkins.
Against Bologna I would start with both of the strikers.
-
Emery has talked about Duran starting.
I don't see Watkins being dropped so it's a matter of time before he starts both.
Maybe it's Fulham or maybe Bologna!
On Duran:
"I am thinking how with his process here and how Duran is progressing how important it is for him to start in these matches. Maybe tomorrow or maybe in the next games we play.
He's ready and his next challenge is coming. Jhon Duran's performances have been very good for us, playing minutes and getting more minutes for him. I think this month is the same."
-
Vs Fulham Duran comes on for Watkins.
No partnership seen as not on pitch together.
Would have been nice to see it especially against 10 men.
-
Half way through the season and this debate is still very pertinent and at forefront of discussion.
Duran isn't leaving in this winter window , back from suspension but Watkins scored last match and he's got the jersey as far I see for Arsenal.
El Maestro said this week on Watkins and Duran
"I’m happy with both strikers, and it’s a privilege for me to train them. Every Aston Villa supporter should be proud of how we can have strikers like Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.
One is the reality, and performing always very good, and progressively getting better - that’s Ollie.
And the other is Jhon who is 21 and we can exploit his potential here. Of course, I don’t know if we are going to keep them here for a long time but hopefully we will."
I actually think if was a choice Watkins may stay longer term than Duran. Emery seems very fond of him and talks about Watkins being reality and Duran beng potential.
-
The best scenario would be that they learn how to play together and form an unstoppable partnership. We’d be nigh on unbeatable

Part of interview with Watkins there's debate on Watkins and Duran.
-
Watkins the man in form keeps his place and starts with Duran on the bench.
Hopefully Watkins can get his first champions league goal. He's been unlucky so far this tournament.
Both have appeared in every champions league match.
Suspect Duran to come in at some point
One more booking would see Duran suspended
-
On the ever continuing debate regards Watkins and Duran there's was a conversation on TNT pre this Monaco game.
Hutton said he doesn't think both can play together. Its one or the other.
Lescott said they don't need need to play together.
It was also mentioned the signing of Malen as another attacking option and the West Ham £57m bid for Duran.
Lescott also seemed to think Malen was a replacement for Duran!
Hutton more informed as Malen can play across the forward line.

I think 3 goals in the last three games suggests that Watkins was nailed on to start, and rightly so.
Agreed.
-
Unai looks sick to death about being asked about them all the time.
-
Posted this in the Match thread but probably better here:
As much as I love Duran and what he could become, watching the last training session he really needs to get over himself. Previously I watched him turn up late for the group, then acting the twat as he wanted to be in another group rather than the one the coaches had put him in. Mings had to drag him in. Then he did nothing but Unai sent him in.
The other day he at least got out in time though again the last player out. He then put in a half arsed warm up and really wasn't that interested. I know this is down to reading his body language but I really think the lad needs to grow up. That stupid interview where he brags about arguing with Unai was fucking embarrassing.
Fantastic player, could go on to achieve whatever he wants but I'm thinking he has forced Unai's hand to play Watkins tonight by once again acting like a twat. You can't be seen to reward such actions so he only has himself to blame.
-
Definitely not both….
-
Can we agree, “not both” that was awful second half.
-
Very odd that we can't make the two up top work for maybe 20 mins at the end of a game. Surely they have worked on this in training as in theory it gives us a very flexible system to play as plan B or C.
-

You could spend a month working on it without success. Both occupy the same space and want to be the striker up top by themselves. It's a tough one for Emery to manage but obvious decision was to start Duran tonight as Watkins has a lot of football played in recent weeks.
-
He should use both but not together.
-
Agree, Duran should have started. Its been a very costly experiment tonight in more ways than one
-
Flog one of them make sure it’s the right one.
-
Duran and Watkins seemed to play as an actual two up top.
I feel there's some scope for wide role Watkins when Duran but really of the two v Monaco Watkins did okay and at least adapted I thought Duran struggled in the two.
Both positioning and discipline.
He came on in 55 mins or so touched 11 times fould twice , gave away 3 times and had his speculative shot.
Watkins played a lovely ball in with outside of right foot which was heading straight for Duran in the box but was just cleared away.
If that had reached Duran be talking about great link up but of the two Watkins has shown he's more cohesive with the team play when they are both on the pitch.
-
Watkins is imo the better all round player Duran is a better finisher take your pick
-
Take your pick all round I think there's 5 players who make the team and then 6 for interchange
I found the strongest starting 11 thread so putting that debate there.
-
Watkins is imo the better all round player Duran is a better finisher take your pick
I would say Duran is a more spectacular finisher.
-
Neither player is going to settle for being a cover, we would get a lot more for Duran.
-
I feel like it's 2010 but - you can't play two out and out strikers in a 4-4-2 these days unless you want to sit deep and counterattack like a relegation candidate.
-
I'm not sure last night is any evidence of them not being able to play together, but it sure was evidence that the rest of the team haven't got a fucking clue how to play in that scenario.
-
He has tried it a few times with no success, previous former managers have tried the two strikers format same result.
-
I'm not sure last night is any evidence of them not being able to play together, but it sure was evidence that the rest of the team haven't got a fucking clue how to play in that scenario.
I think evidence was clear .Emery has come out and said it was a mistake. He said it all.
"We have two good strikers. Playing with two strikers is my challenge. Both are very good players, but today it didn't work well,
I made a mistake when I decided to play with two strikers. Until that moment, we were more or less controlling the game."
I feel like it's 2010 but - you can't play two out and out strikers in a 4-4-2 these days unless you want to sit deep and counterattack like a relegation candidate.
Quite right Monty
Emery:
"I think we played 70 minutes like I wanted. The opponent, of course, had a gameplan as well. They were good in transition,
We created three or four good chances to score. Of course, if we want to be at this level, we have to take the chances we had. But despite that, I was more or less positive.
The last 20 to 25 minutes we were playing with two strikers and we were not threatening like the first 70 minutes.
With two strikers, we were not organised with the positioning like I wanted."
Says it all
-
Ollie and JD go together like bacon and custard.
-
If we are going to play Watkins and Duran up front when we are losing surely we need to work it wide and get as many crosses in as possible? Instead we had no width whatsoever and seemed to persist with trying to play through the middle.
We also have tried Watkins wide left, I'm sure he doesn't want to play there long term but it was worth a go for 10 minutes.
We do seem very hesitant to try something different even when the players available on the pitch don't fit our usual system.
-
I have the impression Duran is becoming a problem due to his inability tactically and understanding of himself being a team player.
This lack of adaptation, discipline, and following instructions to me is the problem.
Now in reference to the debate Watkins , Duran or both ? well Duran hasn't completed one 90 minutes. And with Watkins proven scoring and in form then: It has to be Watkins starting.
-
https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12799/13295406/aston-villa-jhon-duran-transfer-and-ollie-watkins-partnership-in-focus-ahead-of-west-ham-clash
Sky Sports Article Jhon Duran transfer and Ollie Watkins partnership in focus ahead of West Ham clash.
Aston Villa rejected a £57m bid from West Ham for Jhon Duran on Monday; Hammers had tried to sign the striker in the summer; Duran has best strike rate in Premier League but largely as a sub, with Unai Emery unhappy with on-field partnership with Ollie Watkins in defeat to Monaco

I think that's a massive disservice to how far Duran has come since last season. I think he presses well and his scoring record is phenomenal. For me he should start on Sunday to give him a run out and keep Ollie fresh for Wed night too.

He is the very opposite of the depcition of him presented by Footy. He's been brilliant this season in all areas of the game. Lots to improve upon but his all round game at both ends of the pitch and his overall work rate has been excellent.
-
Definitely not both. Just doesn't seem to click between them. I think they both prefer being the main man. To be honest, and its probably unfair to Watkins as he has to work the defence the hardest, I think Watkins for the first 60-70 minutes and then Duran from there on works very well. whether both are happy with that is another question.
-
If you want a team player then it has to be Watkins!
If you want a player to score goals then it has to be Duran!
Definitely not both as they just get in each others space!
-
Watkins scores goals. And gets assists.
-
I still think Watkins scores and assists just as many coming from wide. Whether he's willing to do that is another argument, but he can because he has before.
-

Not at this level he hasn't though, and not for a long time now.

True plus I very much doubt Watkins wants to play out wide when he still has dreams of playing for England again.

It's Watkins up top for me currently with Duran deputising when required. I know Watkins can be profligate, especially this season, but his workrate etc do it for me.
Whether that's acceptable to Duran is another matter. Something I think the management will have been thinking a lot about. I suspect we'll cash in soonish.
-
I get that, Tayls but Duran has finally been putting in the kind of shifts that have been missing from his game and get highly used in defence of Watkins. In defence of Watkins I do finally see him being more of a team player, no more looking pissed off if somebody else scores and his assists record is there for all to see.
He does annoy me that now when he presses from the front, something he was very good at but now seems to be going through the motions. Defender had the ball and Watkins never really gives him anything to think about. Previously he'd be in with an attempted block. He gives the defender nothing to worry about.
As for Duran, I can understand him accepting a move if he's not been given the chance, especially when the player keeping him out of the team isn't having the best of spells. With so many games I'd have expected a bit more rotation, especially this month. My biggest concern with Duran is his attitude in training, always the last to get out there then behaving like a spoilt child. It's not funny, it's not clever, he needs to grow the hell up.
-
Duran would have had a better chance of starting against Monaco if he wasn’t one booking away from suspension.
In the league he has three yellow cards, which is as many as Chris Wood and Haaland put together.
Hopefully the penny drops for him at some point. His ill discipline can cost him opportunities, his managers trust, and cost his team points.
Rooney was exactly the same at his age, and he did OK! But it’s definitely an area of the game for Duran to work on.
-

Well I'm aligned with Emery's thoughts.
As I intimated , observed and shared about Duran.
Now Watkins selected again ahead for West ham.
Most telling and I couldn't put it better myself :
Unai Emery: "But the first requirement is to be a TEAM. And in this beautiful four-lettered word there is no place for anyone that won't be a good team-mate, for anyone that won't understand the meaning of effort, generosity and responsibility."
That basically describes says it all
-
Duran is an excellent striker of the ball, he's desperate to score and has proven to be successful on a number of occasions and at a better ratio than pretty much anyone else around.
He's doing his job and if Emery didn't trust him, he wouldn't get any minutes, wouldn't have been given a new contract and Emery wouldn't have said what he has.
Asked by Sky if there were any circumstances in which it might make sense for Duran to leave Villa in the next week, Emery said: “Such circumstances, of course, in this moment are not helping us to be focusing 100%, but Jhon Duran is our player and I am happy with him. I want him here with us.”
Then asked if he was desperate to keep Duran at Villa Park, a steely-eyed Emery added: “I want him here.”
I think this is more telling.

Emery was singing Danny ings praises and even captained against Stevenage in the infamous FA cup defeat.
Then Ings was not long sold in the January window.
Make of that what you will
So even if Duran starts tonight or plays apart doesn't mean he'll be staying
-
The way the speculation is going today, we'll have neither to choose from! >:(

It won’t be both.

Shame Emery couldn't get them playing together. Oh well..now to fix Leon Bailey and the defence.

Thank you for re doing the title thread as I was wondering if do a new thread with such a debate!
Welcome Rashy!
-
Tuchel says Rashy.
-
Watkins is injured.
Both is what Emery picked on Wednesday.
-
Rashy started up front as the main 9 to help the team. Watkins was on the bench.
2 goals so shows he’s an option.
the beauty is they can both play together as well without much issue .
-
Watkins always scores against Brighton, I'd be starting him.
Yes, I was thinking that yesterday. He's got a decent record against them, unless he leaves Rashford in now he's off the mark.
Rashford didn't impress me playing as a striker - didn't hold up play or stretch them behind - so I'd be playing Watkins, and even Malen, first.
He's looked more than decent as a winger though and provides squad depth across all the attacking positions.
I think Rashy is definitely lined up for PSG given his form and experience against them and expect both to start that one.
-
Rashford starting ahead of Watkins tonight vs Brighton
-
and Rashy scoring … twice as striker now he’s scored both matches …
-
Ollie replaces Rashy during the brighton match after 65 mins .
A great option to have and interesting at moment it’s one or the other.
-
Tom Collomosse ITK on Watkins or Rashford as striker:
Watkins is carrying a knee injury and having his minutes managed. He says Marcus Rashford is expected to be given the nod at centre-forward and likely to keep his place up front against Nottingham Forest.
-
Well he's not that in the fucking know is he?
-
Epic fail.
-
Something is off with Watkins, we’ve seen it before with him. First touch is dreadful, passing and decision making poor. He will rebound, he always does…..but it’s different now with the squad depth and talent and he might be making more appearances in the bench than he’s used to.
-

I honestly think the first conventional end of season tournament for 6 years last season for lots of top form players had an effect on the England ones and some others too.
Palmer nowhere near as good, Foden had already come off the boil and then injured, Watkins same. Saka injured. Bowen nowhere near as good. Konsa same. Rice less good. Guehi same. Stones and Walker heading towards semi retired.
Gordon and Gallagher only outfield ones improved - latter had new challenge. Henderson in goal is the other who has got better.
Kane still an outlier.

Palmer had a great first half of the season, though.

Watkins is a sulker, he can't handle competition for places, he's stropped when Ings came in and Gerrard moved him wider, he didn't like Duran getting games, and now he's threw his dummy out when Rashford gets picked - which I can understan, but he needs to be taking more chances than he does - don't get me wrong, he's been really good for us, and we've been really good for him. I think he'll leave, which is ok, if we replace properly - I also think he won't get that record.
I don't know so much about the Newcastle interview have had a lot on but may explain why Malen came on for Watkins to play as number 9
The debate now is Watkins , Malen or both ?
Also come the summer will another striker be bought and will Watkins be sold I'm surprised to be reading around that Watkins is to be sold ?
Either way another top quality striker is needed for next season.

Rashford being out injured explains exactly why Malen came on as sub for Watkins.
As for the interview, whilst the words always make it sound worse then it was, the context of him smiling during most of it AND Redknapp laughing and joking with Ollie that he (Jaimie) used to be around the managers door asking to start is always lost.

Just reading back through this thread as I hadn’t bothered with it before. F-V’s ‘insight’ (lol) certainly lived down to expectations didn’t it?

Time you could have spent with your kids. Or in the sun. Or having a shit. or pulling your fingernails out.
