Gutted. Hope Gary Gary Shaw pulls through.

Both Gary Shaw and Brian Little were my favourite players when I was a kid. Christ knows how good he could of become if he hadn't suffered with those injuries.
Such a bloody good footballer.

Hope you get well Gary

The rumour has been confirmed - he's in a coma following a fall last week. Thoughts, prayers, fingers crossed, the lot.
Awful news. Echo the sentiment. Would love to have seen him play.

Too young to have seen him play but drank with him a couple of times and he is a lovely fella and obviously a real Villa legend.
Hope he pulls through.
-
Spent the Fulham play-off with Gary and he was a really nice guy - always a footballing hero but a good man as well. Really upsetting news
-
Awful news fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery. One of my favourites, along with Peter Withe, what a duo they were
-
Get well soon gary , a true hero of mine as a kid . Why is it that whenever there is a story about one of our legends , the noses reckon he was 'secret blues ' ffs . They got a thread now all saying he waz a blue
-
Apparently Lee Hendrie.is a nose according to them as well so I'd take no notice.
-

There's a couple of years between us, and as a local boy, I always thought of him as very much one of us...and of course, he was/is!
One of our finest and one of our own!
Get well soon Gary.
We love you very much!
-
Love Gary Shaw. Wishing him a full recovery.

My favourite player ever
Hope he pulls through
-
Horrible news to hear, fantastic player and a lovely man who I met a few times, so hope he’ll come through this.
-
Awful news
Get well soon Gary.
-
In my head he's the Gary Shaw youngster who moved like a dancer and had the world at his feet.
Get well Gary, please get well.
-
There is a privileged generation of Villa fans who will be crestfallen to hear of this. We saw his magnificent rise and painful fall. We were thriiled and pained and we may not see his like again.
God bless ya Gary - and get well soon.
-
Just been aware of news. Seemed a great flair player and I know hes a Villa hero from the champion and European days and a legend. And he means a lot to many. He was before my time and only have historic knowledge.
But will include in prayers for him in aiding all the best to him in recovery.
-
Gary was a classy footballer and a clinical finisher. The 21year-old who won the league and European Cup would be a £100m striker nowadays and would be wanted by all of the top clubs in Europe. It was such a shame his career was wrecked by injury. I went out with a girl for a while in 1981 simply because she lived by Gary and could get me his autograph. I wish Gary all the very best in his recovery. A proper Villa legend and one of our own.
-
Gutted to hear this. Saw him make his debut off the bench at Bristol City and privileged to have watched him sparkle as part of the great side of the early 80s. Absolute class. How he never won an England cap is an absolute travesty.
Please get well Gary, sending all the very best.
-
Sending him all the best.

Did anyone else find it difficult to concentrate at work this morning?
This has really upset me.
I keep checking back hoping for good news.

Strangely, one of my most vivid and fondest memories of Gary Shaw is of him playing in the Villa youth team that played Leicester away in the FA Youth Cup. It was just at the point when he was on the cusp of becoming a first team player, and that night at Leicester he was head and shoulders above any other player on the pitch, scoring our goal in a 1-1 draw. I was able to go to that game as I'd just started university at Leicester, and took along a mate (a Sheffield United fan). Great days, and me and my mate both still talk about that game and, in particular, just how good was that blond haired boy playing for Villa up front.

I never saw Gary play but my standout memory is 25 years ago, when he rang my house to ask me something, and my dad answered and asked who was speaking. When he said "Gary Shaw", my dad said "Gary, you're my hero!" and came to find me, beaming.

I've just seen someone on another villa forum say that he is out of the induced coma!

That's very good news if true.

Great news if true.
Wishing him a swift recovery.
-
Those that are too young to have seen him play will never know just how good he was. That his career was ruined before he was 23 was a tragedy.

Today, a meniscal tear can either be repaired in some cases or "trimmed" (a partial menisectomy). Back when Gary was playing, it was not uncommon to completely remove them (complete menisectomy) which leaves the knee with no cushioning and results in early and severe osteoarthritis. Gary told me this was what he had done. So it is even more tragic when you consider it wasn't even what we would consider a major injury today and it was the unsophisticated surgery that ended his career.

Digne had a pop from a free kick there.
Soz Gaz! Wrong thread.

Soz Gaz! Wrong thread.
It's fine, I put it in the correct thread.
-
I think I have mentioned this before but in the late 70s early 80s Bill Shankly had a column in the Sports Argus. In one Saturday edition he made the claim that Gary Shaw had the potential to be the most exciting British player since Denis Law.
I was too young to have seen much of Law ( he barely registered in my eyes in the 1970 league cup semi final) but he was revered by grown ups, particularly Scots, so this was high praise from Shankly. Particularly as Dalglish was by then winning trophies for fun at Liverpool.
-
Sad news to hear. I do hope you recover soon Gary.
-
I've just seen someone on another villa forum say that he is out of the induced coma!
Not true according to my mate who went to visit tonight at 6.
-
A medically induced coma will usually be for at least a few days, and normally a week or more.
-

Oh no.
That had really raised my hopes. I'm very sorry for raising other peoples' too.
-

I assumed we were only hearing about it today and it must have been a week or so.
I've been refreshing all day for good news and when I saw some, I got so excited I wanted to share it.
Sorry again.

Can’t be blamed for reporting what sounded like good news, we’re all happy to hear it.
According to my pal though, he just needs plenty of rest to recover. Not sure how medically accurate that can be.
-
Did anyone else find it difficult to concentrate at work this morning?
Yep, been checking for posts on here all day…mixture of hope and trepidation everytime there is a new post
-
They usually induce a coma so as the body is able to work on fixing what needs to be fixed while everything else is doing as little as possible. Sadly I know this as someone I care a lot about has been put into one a number of times the last couple of years.
-
I don't know what good it would do but it would make me feel better if we managed to get a good chorus of "gets the ball, he's bound to score, Gary Gary Shaw" going in the Holte on Saturday.
-

Would've been Cowans/McGrath level easily in conversation for some of our greatest ever players in the modern era.
Given he's only 63 now he could've played somewhere up to the late 90s pretty comfortably but injuries finished his career pretty much at 25/26.
Used to see him all the time down Penns Hall years back so hopefully he can get through this.
-
2 days ago was 40 years after the Forest incident. He was a few months from his 23rd birthday, and one of the top players in the country. He never had a decent run of playing consecutive games again for the rest of his career. With Ellis back we'd almost certainly have sold him but he should have had a special career wherever he was.
A telling thing of how good he was is that I was looking at some posts about him on Twitter etc earlier and there were so many fans of other clubs that had seen him play and were saying how special a player he was.
-
He was also the reason for a spate of Gary's born in the early 80's. My cousin being one of them.
-
And loads of people around the country going to the hairdressers and wanting a Gary Shaw.
-
I’m hoping for good news soon about the recovery of Gary Shaw, an absolutely inspirational player and by all accounts, a very modest man.
-
I was 11 when I first saw him at his prime in 80 as a kid.
So he isn’t that that much than older than me.
Shit news.
-
Real proper Villa legend.
And one of us.
-

Shit news.
I was about 4 or 5 when I saw him having a kickabout on the grass next to Meriden Drive about halfway between our two houses. He always wore a Villa bobble hat and would have been about 6 or 7, and we all knew about him even then.
In school, he had an air of snobbery about him as a Villa fan. If you spoke to him about a Villa game the night before, he wouldn’t talk to you about it if you hadn’t been (I nearly always had). A bit ‘better fan than you’, but he was very young and that’s how much he loved the Villa.
-
Absolutely one of us
Prayers said, get well Gary.
-
I'm sure we've all seen it a million times, but take a close look at his involvement in the European Cup winning goal. Absolute quality. Top, top player.
Get well soon.
-
Nowt but a youngster; part of our story.
Get well, lad.
Bloody hell; he's only 3 years' younger than I am!
I apologise for my patronising first post on this thread.
Anyway, very much part of our story and I truly wish him well.
-
I swear Lineker would have hardly played for England had Gary remained fit.
-
Read elsewhere that there is speculation that he has now passed away - hoping that this is bull shit.
-
Why post internet rumours if they are not confirmed?
-
The club's social media hasn't even spoken of him yet. Too busy pushing corporate packages I suppose.
-
Gary was my first villa hero, I was six or seven when he was at his peak for us. I hope he recovers quickly and fully.
It's been about thirty years since I last thought about it, but didn't he win something like "European Young Player of the Year" back in or around 1982? I guess it would be a precursor to today's "Golden Boy" thing, but I can't find any mention of it anywhere on the Internet.
Did I imagine it?
-
Not a word from our club about him, meanwhile from Shrewsbury who he only managed a couple of dozen games
https://x.com/shrewsburytown/status/1833450370011476342
-
Get well soon, Gary
-
You didn't imagine it. It was officially called the Bravo award.

Great, thank you - was beginning to worry if my mind was playing tricks on me. Some incredible names on that list of winners. What could have been if it weren't for that knee injury (which I'm guessing could have been treated much more easily these days)
-
A true Golden Boy. Get well soon, Gary.
-
A true Golden Boy. Get well soon, Gary.
He really was, had the looks to match the talent.
-
Nobody really knows anything at the moment but hopefully the club will be providing updates soon.
-
Thought i'd post some non Villa fan comments about Gary, there's loads more as well. Maybe gives those too young to have seen him an idea of just how good a player he was.
There aren't too many players that are so good everyone takes notice of them but Gary Shaw was one.
Although I support Liverpool I still took notice of this incredibly talented player.
Villa fans must have been estatic when they saw him burst onto the scene.
Not part of the Villa family, I'm Liverpool, but I'm also part of the football family & remember Gary very well, what a player he was, I wish him well in his recovery, get well soon Gary
Not a Villa supporter but still a favourite player of mine back then, best wishes to Gary and his family.
Not a villa fan but growing up Gary Shaw was my favourite striker. Get well soon
As an Evertonian he was one player I always feared when playing Villa. Hope he recovers soon.
One of if not my favourite non Everton player in the late 70s early 80s, hope he gets through what he is suffering from, get well soon Gary
Oh that’s awful news. I loved Gary Shaw, despite not being a Villa fan. He was just brilliant to watch, one of my favourite non-Brighton players. Come on Gary pull through fella. 👊
Always Wanted Man United To sign Gary Shaw, Played in one Of The Great Teams of The 80s Packed with great players
-
Yep. Just one of those special players that nearly everybody can appreciate regardless of allegiances.
-
Steven Withe, son of Peter posted yesterday -
I’ve been inundated with messages and calls today about the legend that is Gary Shaw I’ve not answered any messages from anyone and I’m sorry I’ve not responded, but as the power of social media has taken over and the news is out. The whole Withe family love you and we pray 🙏🏻 for a speedy recovery. I rang my Mum & Dad today and they are absolutely devastated to hear this news today. God bless you Gaz UTV 🙏🏻
-
Nobody really knows anything at the moment but hopefully the club will be providing updates soon.
I'd have thought that the club would at least have posted a get well soon type of message yesterday?
-
I'm not sure it's wise Jane. They may, or may not, know more and pre-empting a prognosis could just go wrong.
I'm sure they will when the time is right because it's something as club that we do really well.
-
Giving their best wishes is easy enough to do. Well for the old Villa it was.
-

Yep, I thought this just as I posted, which doesn't bode well. I don't know what we're about anymore after this week tbh.
-
Villa know what's happening so let the fans know what's happening. Gary Shaw IS Aston Villa. The club is really playing a blinder this week.
-

There could be any number of reason's why they haven't said anything as yet. They wouldn't ignore one of our european cup winning side for nothing.
-
Maybe it’s at the families request right now.
-
Shrewsbury did a post about him. While smaller than us it's the club that thinks most of him that he played for after us.
-
The club should be able to say something that is not controversial or breaking any confidences.
The club is aware of the news concerning Gary Shaw and our thoughts are with him and his family a this time.
-
As simple as Shrewsbury did
All our thoughts this morning are with our former player Gary Shaw as well as his friends and family.
Gary, who played for #Salop in the early 90s, is currently in a serious condition in hospital. 💙🧡
-
Get well Gary.
-
I'm hoping that no news is good news. A wonderfully talented player & the best finisher I've ever seen. Robbed by injury of 10 years at the highest level. I'm praying for good news
Get well soon Gary.
-
I'm hoping that no news is good news.
Same here, John. We don't know if he fell into a coma or was put into one, hopefully the latter.
-
There is plenty to have a go at the back office stuff at VP at the moment - one thing they have always done superbly well is looking after their own and with this in mind there must of been a request to not announce anything in public.
Either by family or (with everything crossed) they may know that this is very serious and they may have to announce something a lot worse (fuck me i hope not)
-
What about something like this
“Aston Villa like all fans and the wider football community are very sad to hear the news of one of our favourite sons Gary Shaw and his ongoing medical condition, get well Gary Saw”
I am sure someone could write it better, but it’s not difficult, if Shrewsbury can do something…….
-

How about we stop second guessing and just hope for the best. There may be many reasons why the club hasn't released a statement and we really shouldn't be trying to enforce something when we don't know the facts.
I know you mean well and I understand the sentiment but let's just sit tight and wait for the news. As hard as it is. :(
-
Ok, but Shrewsbury Town have seen fit to wish him and his family the best, I really don’t understand why we can’t, the news broke and nothing from the club, announcement about how happy they are we have sold out v Bayern, not even an acknowledgment? Not even a sentence to acknowledge one of ours is in hospital, sorry we could and should have something
-
I’m not second guessing anything, Gary Shaw is in hospital and AVFC have not committed, nothing to second guess.
-
Commented, sorry my bad spelling
-
Look I'm loathe to defend the club, especially this week, but as others have pointed out there may be reasons that will become clearer with the passage of time.
However I am just about sick of organisations having to make public announcements on the status of this or that, and those that are waiting to harangue them for doing/not doing it in the correct fashion/time etc.
-
Gary is still employed by Villa on a matchday and is much closer to lots of people at the club, so you would hope and expect that Villa are privy to more information. We all hope for good news, but in this case the club have to deal with it sensitively - Shrewsbury are passing wishes on to a friend, we are talking about a member of the family.
-
What ever you think of the ticketing stuff, there is zero chance Villa would be ignoring this because they didn't care, or weren't aware. There is clearly more to this than we know about that is preventing them from saying anything now.
-
Problem is we are not talking a very simple get well, or are thoughts and prayers (best wishes) are with you and your family. Only my opinion and if I have upset anyone I apologise.
-

Ok fair comment
-
Can you imagine how good the England team would have been with Cowan's, Mortimer, Morley, Withe and Shaw? Probably would have been World Champions. I can't remember exactly but I'm sure Maradonna said he was the most exciting talent he'd seen after we played Barca in the Super Cup. High praise indeed.

I think Doug tried to sell him to Barca in the bar after that game.

There's no think about it.
-
Was there also a link to Juventus prior to his injury or am I remembering that incorrectly?
-
The latest news is that he's breathing unaided but still in a coma.
-
Thanks Dave. Good news, hopefully on the road to a full recovery.
-

That sounds like an encouraging move in the right direction.

Thanks for keeping us updated Dave. Must be a difficult time for those who are close to Gary.
-
Feared the worst so that is something positive.
-

Apparently Real Madrid were looking at him too.
-
I went to a book-launch in Brighton last night, about the never-quite-made-it indie musician Lawrence, a Brummie lad who led bands called Felt, Denim and most recently Mozart Estate.
Now 61 and still dreaming of pop stardom, the story of his life may end-up being more successful than his music career was. Strong reviews and sales so far.
Anyway...he wrote a catchy little song a decade or so ago with a whole verse dedicated to Gary. So when the book talk was over and he was signing copies, I went up to him and mentioned I was a Villa fan and asked him had he heard the recent news about Gary Shaw. He was shocked. He said he'd grown-up in the same area and knew him as a kid and that when the song had come out, Gary had sent him a card to thank him which meant a lot to Lawrence. He, of course, wished the best for our hero.
From 01:10 here:
-
Great post eamonn. I bloody loved Felt.
-
Great post eamonn. I bloody loved Felt.
I was just thinking of you Risso and our B&S roots/Felt lineage. I couldn’t get to the Rough Trade launch in London last Friday, had no idea of this song’s existence, thanks so much Eamonn. Especially lovely to hear of that conversation.
My Gary Shaw scrap book has been sitting on my shrine since the news, I think time to share some snaps, maybe I’ll try and do it over a few days, part of our Gary vigil…
-
That would be great mate! Gary was the first Villa player I was properly aware of, and as such my first Villa hero.
-
8th minute round of appplause at the Everton game.
-
8th minute round of appplause at the Everton game.
Hopefully's everybody is in by then!
-
Besides his goals he played a key part in 2 of our most iconic goals, Dennis v Liverpool and obviously Bayern.
-
Wishing Gary and family and friends all the best, hoping for some good news.
Sad I can’t make it tomorrow as too late for the little ones.
Decided to do it all in one go, you’ll notice the close up of one question in his first Sports Argus Column. You can’t imagine how proud I was when we got the Argus that Saturday, no doubt taking the clipping into school as a ?6/7 yo.
Didn’t compare to being the only kid in my school who got to Rotterdam though!
Forever grateful for so much of my wonderful childhood.
Would love to sing his song on 8mins, better than applause. I’d probably cry if I was there.

I have mates in their mid 60s who had middling success in the early 80s of the same mindset. It's a thing with singer songwriters they never hang up their boots.
Great story by the way.

Besides his goals he played a key part in 2 of our most iconic goals, Dennis v Liverpool and obviously Bayern.
Plus Tony Morley's goal of the season at Everton of course!

Great stuff Purple, thanks for posting. As for his answer to your question, I have something that may be apocryphal to add.
For those of you who have read my book ‘Gangsters etc’ there was a character in it called Hands of Stone. He was based on a real person, one of my best mates, who played in the same team as Gary when they were both schoolboys - North Warwick. Now, Hands is a bluenose, which gives the story he told me a bit of credibility in my opinion. He said that after one game a bloke came into the dressing room, said he was a Man Utd scout, and offered Gary a trial. The answer he got was short and to the point:
“You’re wasting your time mate, there’s only one team I’m gonna play for”.
I went to school with Gary, and I know for a fact that he was Villa mad, on a par with the most passionate of us in our school, so the story doesn’t surprise me in the least.
-
Thanks Percy and everyone. I quite like my little home made scrap books contain’s Gary’s debut Argus & Shoot columns, worth a read I think.
I quite like the description of Saunders showing a caring side.
Gary Shaw was definitely my first hero, I’ll never be able to thank my Dad enough for ensuring I had a ST for 80/81, going to local aways (and Highbury) and of course the ‘family holiday’ as my School Hesdmistress was informed with my Dad & Gramps the following year.
In the end Sid became my favourite - I guess not just because of talent but longevity.
There are memories of lovely moments of meeting the players in the days when you had the freedom of Bodymoor Heath, and the chance to recall some of those meetings with a few of them at the Rotterdam 20th anniversary dinner.
But the golden boy was my first hero.
If you are going, sing his song tomorrow for me.

Funnily enough I was telling my Mrs about Lawrence and Felt on Sunday when one of the National Newspapers ran an article prior to the book launch.
In was into Felt and had their LP's when I was in my teens. When at the University of Birmingham, (circa 1988), I had a job behind the bar at the Trocadero in town. I was in there one night chatting away to a bloke at the bar and I asked him what he did for a living. Quite nonchalantly, he said I am a singer in a band. Oh yeah I said, which band? He said Felt, and to his surprise, I said skeptically ...you're Lawrence...nice one I'm a big fan. I have always wondered to this day if it was him, (I dont think it was). I had never seen a picture of him before, so i didnt know. However, he was not at all what I imagined Lawrence to be, so I suspected it was a line he trotted out and was surprised that someone had heard of him, (I only knew of one other person who had ever heard of Felt). I will never know if it was him or not, unless he reads this. Oh well good luck to them both!

Eamon and Purple great stuff.

Cracking thread this. Shows the calibre of the H&V regulars. I'm there today and I'm really hoping a spontaneous round of "Gary Shaw,Gary Shaw, Gary Gary Shaw, when he gets the ball he's bound to score, Gary Gary Shaw" breaks out on minute 8. If not I'll just sing it on my own. I'll be in the NS lower if anyone wants to join in.
-
The latest news - again unconfirmed but from a reliable source - is nothing's changed and more tests are being carried out.

Please tell me it happened?
I made the most of not being there and had a lovely afternoon with my parents visiting me and their granddaughters, found the perfect place for lunch, feeding golden carp, soft play and some vegan brownies to bring home. Really trying to savour moments with loved ones while we can.
Just as my Dad was about to drive off we heard Radio 5 saying ‘Duran goal of the weekend’ even my Mum was saying, is that the Villa?
Alma age 5: “Daddy what’s a thunderbolt?”
Hope we can sing it on Saturday at 8mins, we’ll all be there in our new (fake!)* shirts
*yes I know ethically dodgy, but £184 less than the price I’d have paid at the club shop should I have been able to afford it :/

Mmmmm. I wonder why ticket prices have to go up to support a business trying to comply with rules that are revenue based ?
-
You really think the Sky6 don't sell way more fakes than we do?
-
Didn't notice it near me, but then it was mostly younger supporters in their 20's and 30's and I'm not confident enough to start one.
Noticed the screens had a video which started with Gary Shaw but it turned out to be screamers scored by us over the last 40 odd years. They just need to edit Durans in now.
-
You really think the Sky6 don't sell way more fakes than we do?
I'm sure they do. Especially in Asia etc. The general point remains. The ciub needs revenue. It can come from any and every source. Anything that denies club income via fakes has an adverse impact. IMO it's the rules that needs challenging. But until that happens we have to increase revenue - simple as. Maybe when Citeh115 win their case because they've got better lawyers then that will open the gates and good owners like ours can start to compete with the likes of Chelsea and ManU who can run up crazy debts but keep on spending.
-
Maybe the £184 saved goes towards match tickets, which the club make way more on per £1 spent. Not everyone can afford both.
Although this isn't the thread for this debate.
-
I didn’t hear or see any tribute sadly.

Probs not aided by the fact in the 8th minute we were attacking the Holte and had a couple of corners so even if anything had started it wasn’t quiet enough to allow a chant to grow…shame though
-
There were a handful of people near me in the Trinity lower, roughly my age, who clapped. Was really disappointed but people seemed oblivious to the reason why we were clapping.

Apologies.

I expect the median age of the crowd is about 35. Gary Shaw had stopped playing several years before most were born. And TV highlights of goals and play were three a weekend if you were lucky. And as our club hasn't stated anything, the majority of those fans are totally unaware of his condition either.
-
Nev from H&V was belting out the Gary Shaw song in the 8th minute behind me. Quite a few joined in. Others looked round slightly bemused...
-
I have spoken to a few fans who are my age, and they didn’t know Gary was poorly.
Obviously it’s not really in the wider public domain.
-
I didn’t hear or see any tribute sadly.
Problem was we had two corners just on the eighth minute - some folk (including me) did clap but it just got lost in the general noise for the corners
-
There was a low key rendition in the Lower North
-
We all wanted to be Gary Shaw in the park
-
We all wanted to be Gary Shaw in the park
Girls wanted to marry him.
-
In any organised game as a kid I had to have the number 8 shirt because of Brian and Gary.
-
Did he ever write a memoir or do any extensive interviews/podcasts about his career?
To have his talent, looks and success by the time he was 21, it must have taken such strong spirit and resolve to get through the years that followed of disappointment and frustration with injuries.
But he achieved more than 99% of footballers/professionals ever do. I hope he had a good life afterwards.
-
Gary Shaw was my first footballing hero - the first Villa player's name I ever remember.
I did have the honour of meeting him at a Villa Park event, where he was a guest speaker; and I had the job of introducing him to various senior managers/Directors of the companies who were at the event.
I was starstruck, but he was your typical friendly Brummie, didn't seem to have a massive ego.
I often wonder what sort of career he'd have had without his injuries - he'd have surely been an England star in the mid-late 80s.
-
Awful news. One of our own.
-
One of us - god bless x
-
A mate of mine helped him move house/flat a while back back, and said he was lovely and gave him a drink for his trouble.
-
I'm not sure anything sums up just what a player he was better than this
1981 was the year that football and I clicked, and even though I wasn't a Villa supporter I remember Gary Shaw as being the most exciting forward about at the time. A local boy scoring a ton of goals with style. Just the sort of player who makes you love football.
-
So, so sad. My all time favourite player. Truly heartbroken about this.

Not only a tremendous footballer and a legendary part of our class of 1981/82, but also one of our own. Devastating news.

Sad, sad news. Such a gifted player who lit up so many football days for us all.
-
How terribly sad. Always remember the excitement of the 1980 to 1982 period and he was a huge part of that. He was so personable and had time for everyone when I saw him at events whether at VP or elsewhere.
-
The sheer joy on his face as he runs towards Peter Withe after the most important goal in world history is a beautiful beautiful thing.
-
He’s not in a good way but is still alive.

I've now seen someone say this on 2 separate forums. This is unbearable.
-
Tom Ross has tweeted that Gary is still alive.
-
He’s just repeated it in a second tweet - gravely ill.
Probably best to leave the family its privacy until - and hopefully there is not - any formal announcement.
-
I heard it from the best possible source, who told me in good faith.
-
Well let’s hope it’s not true and we all stop believing everything we read, just because we think they know, or are a journalist, it’s horrible absolutely horrible
-
Have the club tweeted anything?
Edit. I’ve just checked the the last I can see was 5 hours ago about Bogarde. Perhaps it would be best to wait for more official confirmation one way or the other.
-

Agreed. It’s for the family to announce these things. Not a stampede of “journalists” and ITK’s to be first for their own egos.
-
Have the club tweeted anything?
Don’t think so, nothing, about him being ill, in hospital, nothing from what I have seen
-
If anyone is ITK on here then it’s Mr Woodhall. Look at his last post.

No, but Kilmarnock have (I didn't know he had played for them tbh).

I can only apologise for what I was told in good faith by several credible sources. I'm also glad I was wrong.

Maybe add something like "still fighting" to the title?
-
Thank goodness he’s still with us. Let’s all pray he makes as good a recovery as is possible.

No need to apologise, as you in turn were acting in good faith. It's not as if you did a Jay Forsyth.

Funny that people were annoyed earlier in the week about the club not mentioning him, and then something like this happens. Better to keep quiet, I suppose, until things are clear.
-
@StanCollymore
Villans, as Tom Ross mentioned, Gary is still in hospital and still very poorly. I've had this confirmed.
Keep him in your thoughts tonight, for as long as there's life, there hope.
Keep fighting ledge, thinking of you.

It's where I am. He lived the dream. Give him some space. That said I've been in a bad mood all afternoon his hearing the news. Villa's Chosen Few. He lived the dream. Played for us. Won the league with us. Became Champions of Europe with us. Blonde bombshell at 22. Best under 23 player in Europe?
More than anything he was a man of the people. If you doubt me, ask Eric.
-
The Sun reported 45 mins ago he passed away. He didn't.

Somebody rushed to Wikipedia to edit the page to Gary Shaw was etc.
It's been reverted now.

Definitely. All done with the best of intentions.
He was before my time, but Gary is a legend. Always.

I don’t agreee with deleting the thread. There are many lovely heartfelt tributes in these pages which would be lost.
Like it or not ‘The Immortal Gary Shaw’ coming back from the dead is now part of his story.
The way to keep the thread as it should be, is not to post recriminations about who is to blame, and keep it to tributes and good wishes.

I agree. Any 'wrong doing' is certainly no fault of anybody on here and, as you say, the tributes and good wishes would go.

Glad he is fighting on. Really hope he comes through this.

Always check on BBC. When it simply comes to reporting whether something has happened or not, whatever you think of them, they’re spot on.
Or just leave the family in peace unless and until they want to make a statement.
Why all these budding social media Woodward and Bernsteins want to “confirm”, have “sources” and be in the know. Goodness knows. This is real life and someone’s loved one. Have some respect!
-
Now confirmed by the club. RIP Gary.
Thanks for the memories.

Heartbroken. So incredibly sad. RIP Gary.
https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2024/september/16/A-tribute-to-Gary-Shaw/
Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn that Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes, has passed away.
Gary was one of our own, a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goalscoring exploits which helped fire Villa to success in the 1980s. Individual accolades would also follow for a player who was idolised by many on the terraces.
He passed away peacefully earlier today surrounded by his family, who asked Aston Villa to release a statement on their behalf.
The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Gary’s family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.
Born in Kingshurst in January 1961, Shaw was the golden boy of Villa’s golden era. Supporters easily identified with the blond-haired local lad who hit the target on a regular basis.

Shaw’s partnership with Peter Withe struck fear into the heart of opposition defences during the title-winning campaign of 1980-81 and the European Cup trail the following season. While Withe provided the power, Shaw’s pace and anticipation completed a lethal duo, earning him recognition far beyond Villa Park.
In 1981, having contributed 18 goals to Villa’s League Championship triumph, he was voted PFA Young Player of the Year. Twelve months later his talents were acknowledged on the continent as he received the accolade of European Young Footballer of the Year.
He began his apprenticeship with Villa in 1977 and by the end of the following year he had been given his first taste of senior football, making his debut as a substitute against Bristol City at Ashton Gate in August 1978 before having a couple of starting appearances.
After signing professional on his 18th birthday and establishing himself as a first-team regular in 1979-80, he missed only two league games during Villa’s march to the title the following season.
His Euro award was the result of some outstanding performances along the road to Rotterdam, including the crucial breakthrough goal from a tight angle in the quarter-final against Dynamo Kiev. He remained a regular during the 1982-83 season, during which he won a European Super Cup medal but then, sadly, became the victim of a series of injury problems which seriously curtailed his involvement.

After 213 appearances and 79 goals, he was given a free transfer in 1988, later playing in Denmark, Austria and Hong Kong. He subsequently worked for Villa as a youth team coach and for the Press Association.
In recent years, he had been a regular visitor to Villa Park on matchdays, engaging in Q&A sessions with guests in corporate areas around the stadium as well as working as a football statistician.
Rest in Peace, Gary.

Club have announced his passing, sad day. Can the thread title be changed please?
-
Desperately sad news.
-
Terrible news. RIP Gary and thank you for the brilliant years of football for our Club.
-
Incredibly sad.
-
Gutted. A proper football and Villa hero to me and so many others. Rest in Peace.

World is a bit darker now. RIP Gary, you were something special.
On the day the team set off on a new campaign in Europe it seems cruel we lose a man that helped make our greatest ever journey possible.

Really awful news, RIP Gary.

Rest in peace, Gary.

Just terrible news.
Amazing player and top bloke too.

I’m sat at my desk reading this with tears in my eyes, and I’d imagine most of you are the same.
RIP Gary. You will always be a Villa legend.
-
And only 63 years old :'(
-
Deeply sad news. Thanks for the memories Gary. Top lad. Top player. We've lost a legend and a true "one of our own" RIP Gary. HEITS.
-
Withe and Shaw but appropriate in memory.
-
RIP Gary Shaw. Before my time, just, but a legend from a golden age, a player still looked up to by those of us who came of age after his exploits on the pitch.
-
RIP Gary.
His partnership with Peter Withe was up there with the best!
-
Fucking gutted - often spoke with him at VP and such a decent bloke - proper Brummie.
What a shame. How he never got a full England cap is a disgrace for such a talented player - the usual London bias back in the day.
A local lad who achieved immortality playing for the club he loved - HOITS
-
Absolutely devastating. It's all been said, just terrible news.
-
Awfully sad news.
Never to be forgotten my Villa hero.
-
So sad 😢
Thanks for the good times Mr. Shaw

Ah fuck, no age. RIP.

RIP to one of my early heroes . That team shaped my youth .
The definitive “One of Our Own.”
Rest well , Legend .

We've lost a hero, a friend, part of our youth.
-
The most golden of golden boys it's possible for any football club to to have, Gary Shaw was, is and always will be a giant of Aston Villa. Sincere sympathy to all his family, team mates, friends, colleagues and fans. Such heart-breaking news.
-
RIP Gary & thank you for giving me Aston Villa…first time I saw him play as a young lad this blonde haired was Villa through and through…the family of Blues was not so enamoured with my choice
Rest easy Gary
-
Genuinely one of us, he lived our dream on the pitch on our behalf. Was lucky enough to meet him a couple of years ago and I got to tell him he was my hero.
-
I was a bit too young to remember seeing him play, but I knew about him, like I knew about Jimmy Greaves and George Best. That's the level of company he keeps. What a loss. RIP.
-
I didn’t have many ‘Non-Wolves’ heroes when I was young but Gary Shaw was a player I always admired hugely. A fabulous footballer with a great sense of style & a fantastic 80s wedge cut that I tried to emulate by taking his picture in Shoot Magazine to the Barbers.
RIP Gary Shaw.
-
Such an awful shock only 63 part of a wonderful team and a wonderful time to be part of the club. Loved watching him and Peter Withe together RIP Gary
-
An astonishingly gifted player. I was lucky enough to see him from his debut to the game at Forest that effectively finished his career for us. Touch, balance, unbelievably sharp in the area, and he made such intelligent runs. He would have been a great player in any era.
My favourite goal was v Barcelona in the Super Cup at the Holte End - instinctively brilliant.
The youngest player in the European Cup winning side and the first to go. I’m absolutely heartbroken.
-
So sad, the youngest of the 82 Champions of Europe yet the first to join HEITS. How poignant that we play Wolves on Saturday as I remember going to Molyneux and seeing Gary slam a left footer into the net. It’s been a terrible 12 months of seeing our former heroes pass away but this news is the most depressing.
Like a lot of us of a certain age I got to meet Gary in his heyday and it was just like talking to an old mate. RIP Gary Shaw and thank you for some wonderful football memories.
-
We've lost a hero, a friend, part of our youth.
My first sporting hero. I was Gary Shaw in the back garden games with my brothers.
-
R.I.P. legendary part of the rich tapestry of our history, sleep peacefully sir.
-
Genuinely one of us, he lived our dream on the pitch on our behalf. Was lucky enough to meet him a couple of years ago and I got to tell him he was my hero.
I think that’s it, he kind of showed the possible dream to a young boy as he lived it.
All feels a bit odd having been moved to tears yesterday, taught my little ones the song they’ll hear next weekend, called my Dad.
I’ve never thought too much about the need to have heroes and idols, but he was mine at that important age.
So much gratitude for the joy, skill, beauty - all shared at the match with my Dad and sometimes Gramps, and in the playground and beyond.
So much pride given to so many.
Hopefully we can all find the right balance of celebrating the life lived as well as marking the loss.
Love to all.
-
Beautifully put, Satyin.
-
Heartbreaking. Another piece of my youth falls away.

RIP Gary Gary Shaw! Sadly gone, but never to be forgotten!

I'm a Brummie, villa mad, and 58.
I've never been star-struck, though I'v been lucky enough to meet a fair few famous people.
Admiration of character and appreciation of ability, yes, but for the most part I've very few idols.
But I love Sid, Paul McGrath, and unquestionably, I loved Gary Shaw. The news has really knocked me back.
Rest easy Bab.
-
RIP Gary. A great footballer and an even better person.
-
Awful news, RIP Gary. Anderlecht home was my first game, and the penalty areas were mud and sand, but his touch was sublime despite that. What a talent, what a guy
-
RIP Gary. Everything has been said about what an exciting player and Villa hero he was.
I met him once, a few of us entered a quiz team in some tournament or other held in the Aston Tavern, we played against a team of some of the younger Villa players, including Gary. The lasting impression of him was of a Villa fan who happened to be a marvellous footballer so spent his time on the pitch rather than the terraces.
Condolences to his family

RIP Gary Shaw 🙏😢 The crazy world of social media and it's now been officially announced. I spoke to my Mum and Dad over Facetime and told them the news and we all cried and I've not seen my Dad like that since we lost our Grandad. God bless all Gary's family and friends 🙏
-
Official now and none the more palatable for that. Whoever thought back in the championship and Euro cup times singing his name on the Holte and openly envying the good looking talented bugger we'd be hearing this.
The memories are there forever and ever.
Thank you Gary.
-
such a sad day today . Welling up here . I saw his that game at Bristol city with my grandad when he made his debut and fell in love with him , he made my Villa love even stronger and covered my walls and I thank him for all the pleasure he gave me and my family. Proper villa legend and thanks for that day I had in Rotterdam with my dad and grandad , never to be forgotten . This is just awful.
-
Never posted before although I do read most things on here. Felt compelled to post on such a sad day.
Gary was a wonderful player but also a genuinely nice bloke. I got to know him in the mid 90s when he attended the same gym I used to go to. At the time I was a bit down on my luck as I'd not long been made redundant. Gary knew this and invited me to attend the Villa v Leicester game ( early 1995 ? ) He knew money was tight but said don't worry about paying I'll get us into a box and we'll have a few free beers.
He was as good as his word. In fact, we had so many free beers in various boxes I didn't realise the game had finished 4-4 until the next morning !!
He also arranged for a club employee to give me a lift home. To this day I don't know who that was. What a wonderful gesture from a wonderful bloke. I don't need to say anything about his footballing abilities as those of us who saw him play saw those skills for themselves. Suffice to say he was unlucky to be around when England seemed to have a number of very good strikers.
He's been taken far too early. Thanks Gary for those wonderful football memories and for showing me a kindness when times were a bit tight. RIP HEITS.
-
Saw all his home games and some of the away we always chanted his name and he was always bound to score.

-
What a kick in the teeth this is. The word “legend” is put around way too much these days but Gary Shaw was one.
One of my hero’s who I worshipped as a young
lad standing on the Holte. A league winner, a European Champion, a European Super Cup winner and a young European player of the season.
This doesn’t appear real at the moment as in my
mind he’s still that young, blond haired Villa supporter playing in the best Villa side I’ve ever seen. A supreme player who lived us as much as we loved him.
He’s a massive loss to our club and I’m absolutely gutted.
God bless legend and thanks for the memories I’ll take to my grave.

I'm sure the song will get one last airing during the minute's applause for him on Saturday.
Was born in 1980, so missed what turned out to be the peak of a career sadly cut short by injury. Me and my brother's first pets (two goldfish) were called Peter Withe and Gary Shaw though, so he'd made an impression even at that early age.
Met him a couple of times in person over the years and would echo what others have said here, seemed like a genuinely nice bloke who had time for others.
Adds some real poignancy to the opening Champions League fixture at Villa Park given the opposition.
-
I've been desperately hoping for positive news all weekend. Saw the confirmation on Midlands Today, and it's hard to keep the tears back. So very sad to lose one of the golden generation at such a comparatively early age (2 years my senior). I count myself lucky to have watched him throughout his Villa career (including the night of nights), and to have met him a couple of years ago.
RIP Shawy. My sincere condolences to all friends and family. HEITS
-
RIP Gary.
Thanks for the great memories.
-
Those of us who are a similar age to Gary Shaw wished that we were as blessed with his talent and had a footballing career that emulated the same. He was the David Watts (The Jam) of our football world. We didn't envy him, we loved him and wanted to be him doing it for our club the way he was. Of all the former heroes that have left us his is affecting me more than any, I feel sick in my stomach now that this has hit home.
-
Last nights premature relief blown away today.
Many great posts. Will always be the blonde haired Villa fan who won the prize and was really, "one of our own"
Deepest condolences to the family.

RIP Gary a true legend I was glad my grandson had a photo with you last season god bless HEITS
-
Oh bugger.
The thing about Gary was he was such a talented footballer and Villa legend b was always just a decent bloke when you met him.
Spent the 2018 play-off final with him and he was just great to be around even though we lost,
Have a treasured photo with him from that day.
Sharing the grief with the Villa family makes it a bit easier.
-
I first saw him as one of the runners up to Crystal Palace in the 1978 Youth Cup Final. Palace had a very strong team and we didn't play that well, but Ivor Linton was lightning, and it was hard to miss the blond lad up front. The Missus fancied him something rotten.
The last time I saw Gary (I'd always "just missed him" at Mr. Woodhall's fanzine station) was in the late 80s at Bodymoor. The teams were playing 5-a-side and Gary flickered and flared like a flame in the breeze. I thought he was back, but was told he couldn't hack it any more. Nevertheless, that's the strongest memory I had of him.
-
My abiding memory of Gary was at an autograph signing session at the CO-OP superstore at Wilnecote with the European cup. He'd signed so many autographs by the time I got to him that he had a blister so he asked for a plaster, The CO-OP staff gave him one of the new-fangled (at the time) band-aids that you opened with a draw-string instead of the two-flap jobs. After trying and failing to open it I heard him mutter "I haven't got the 'O' levels for this thing!" We fell about laughing. Thank you for the memories Gary. You will be missed and the world is a little sadder today :'(
-
RIP Gary. What a player he was.
-
Shrewsbury had a few last glimpses of his talent. He's still thought of fondly by a lot of them that saw him play there, including something like a 5 minute hat-trick.
-
He was the hero of my childhood. They say never meet your heroes. I did. And he was everything I imagined him to be. And more. He's leading the attack up above now for the rest of the Holte Enders In Tbe Sky. Thanks for the memories Gary...one of our own.
-
Such terrible news and so upsetting, it's really difficult to find the words to describe just how special he was, especially to us, on so many levels. He had the lot. Young Brummie playing for the club he loved, handsome lad with a cracking haircut, a great technical footballer - he wasn't just a goalscorer, he created them too, it all seemed so natural for him, he really made it look easy.
Watching him come into the side and deliver week after week at the very highest level during those few short years is something I'll never forget. When defenders couldn't cope with his skill and movement they'd often give him a hefty kick or two. He just got up and carried on. No fuss. Plus he knew his teammates had his back, he was the gifted kid of the team yet played with such maturity, way beyond his years. He was loved by all yet was ridiculously modest for someone so talented.
I was fortunate enough to have met him a few years after his injury when he turned up to give the prizes for a 5-a-side competition. Looking back I just think why did he bother, he could have been doing a thousand other things but there he was, no fuss, giving back to his community when nobody expected him to. Afterall, he was Gary Shaw, the Aston Villa legend with a cabinet full of silverware.
What a player and what a man. Rest in peace, Gary and thanks for absolutely everything.
-
So saddened to learn of his passing. Like many of my generation I feel blessed to have seen him play and will be forever grateful for all he did for the club. RIP Gary
-
Rest In Peace Gary. Such sad news. Brilliant player who was sadly overlooked by England, utterly ridiculous! Scored some nice goals and always troubles defenders with hard work and a bit of movement. Go and have a game of golf with Paul Birch. Thanks for the great memories. Thoughts to the family too. 😢

We've lost a hero, a friend, part of our youth.

Shrewsbury had a few last glimpses of his talent. He's still thought of fondly by a lot of them that saw him play there, including something like a 5 minute hat-trick.
Scored the only goal when they knocked Wimbledon out of the cup, too, back when Wimbledon were top flight.
-
I'll always remember him as the kid who had everything:
A good looking Brummie lad playing for Villa
Scoring for fun - on and off the pitch
Winning trophies and the adoration of the Holte End.
He was everything that we hopeless park kickabout, jumpers for goalposts wanabees we're never going to be, but we lived out our dreams through him.
Thanks Gary - you gave us much more than you possibly realised.
RIP

RIP Gary.
-
All the more outrageous that he never won a full England cap when you consider some of the absolute carthorses who have been given them over the years.
-
Absolutely gutted at this sad news. Gary was one of us in every sense. His career at the highest level was all too short, but what he achieved in those years is incomparable with those who went before or have come after him.
A legend in every sense of the word. Only a year or so older than me. Thank you for those memories, we won't see the likes of you for a long time. RIP
-
I’m gutted. So very sad.
I'm honoured to have been on the Holte for those golden years - what a player, what a star, a local hero. I hope the Holte End can sing his song next Saturday. There'll be a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes for sure.
Rest in Peace Gary Shaw - taken far too soon. I wish it wasn't so.
-
It was generally harder to win a cap back then, although it was ridiculous they took Gary to Australia and then never played him.
-
Apart from the fact that he wasn't playing for a London club, I think the reason he didn't win England caps was because he was considered to be first and foremost a penalty box finisher - a nonsense really, when you look at the part he played in goals for others, notably Withe v Bayern, Mortimer v Liverpool, and Morley v Everton.
-
Like many of us born in the early-mid seventies he was my first Villa hero. Had a number 8 sewn onto the back of my first Villa kit. I had blonde hair like Gary, every time I kicked a ball about with mates, I was, in my mind Gary Shaw.
Thanks for the memories Gary, rest well you beautiful man.
-
I think the team were too focused on winning trophies to lower themselves to play internationals.
-
He was before my time but having read all the comments from those that watched him from the stands at Villa park and met him in person, it appears he was quite the man, living the dream, our dream.
RIP HEITS
-
We've lost far too many too early, and lost some that were amazing Villa men and human beings but none have upset me as much as this.
-
Can anyone recommend interviews/podcasts he gave in recent years? Was he a little shy? Doesn't tally with all the things I'm reading but I can't recall him doing interviews or co-comms on the in-house channel like Tony Morley, Ken McNaught etc.
Also, if it's a minute's applause on Saturday, I hope they show some of his best goals on the big screens. Let Durán, Ollie etc. know just how privileged they are.
-
I'm so sad he never got to see us back in the European Cup, fabulous player and man. Rest easy big man...
-
Absolutely gutted to hear this terrible news ,yesterday i still had everything crossed for him to make a recovery, remember watching him in the early days with a couple of mates we couldn’t believe we had such a player
You know when they’re a legend because you always want to be him when you had a kick about on the local green
God bless you Gary, Rest in Peace .

Henry Winter
Gary Shaw – a tribute. Shaw, who has passed away aged 63, played the game the way it should be played. The Aston Villa attacker played with flair, an unquenchable hunger for goals, commitment to team and loyalty to club. He played to win, conquering England in 1981 and Europe in 1982, and he did it in style. Shaw’s finishing was not only about the quantity, 79 goals in 213 games for the Villa, but also the quality.
Shaw was fleet of mind and body, able to sense the best positions to glide into, whether holding his run to the edge of the area for a cutback and strike with either foot or darting to the near-post for a poacher’s finish with head or foot. He could stun a ball speeding in, flick it up, juggle it and volley it in, all under pressure from a merciless centre-half and on pitches that sometimes looked more suited to ploughing than pillaging goals.
And he scored vital goals. It feels like only yesterday, rather than 42 years ago, that Shaw was dribbling through Dinamo Kyiv’s defence and scoring with a low left-footed shot from the tightest of angles at Villa Park in 1982. It was not only a brilliant strike but hugely significant in Villa’s run to European glory.
So many fine finishes: running on to Dennis Mortimer’s through pass and driving the ball through Jim Platt’s legs at Middlesbrough in 1980; and gambling on a David Geddis flicked shot coming back off the post, falling to his right, connecting with his left in 1980 at Villa Park in the 3-0 Derby win over Blues – that athleticism and positioning again.
Shaw could link and create and finish, famously against Nottingham Forest in 1981, dropping deep and taking the ball from Morley, loaning it to Geddis, then giving it to Mortimer in the centre-circle and ghosting into the area. Kenny Swain, released by Mortimer, crossed low and hard from the right, Shaw timed his run to perfection, meeting it first time. A bad knee injury in 1983 lessened his impact but his mind was still sharp, taking him into the right positions. When Paul Rideout nodded down against West Brom in 1984, Shaw pounced.
For Villa fans, he was “one of our own”. For the rest of us admiring from afar, Shaw was a Boy’s Own hero, prolific and photogenic, the PFA Young Player of the Year, then European Young Footballer of the Year. Shaw would be worth a fortune in the modern era. His versatility would be highly prized. He could play as a second striker, centre-forward, even wide.
His partnership with Peter Withe was the proverbial rapier and broadsword, silk and steel. They cut a swathe through opposition defences. The photo of Shaw and Withe holding the 1982 European Cup above Morley and placing it on his head remains an iconic image and embodied Villa’s attacking approach. That year, Shaw made the 40-strong long-list for the World Cup but was eventually overlooked by Ron Greenwood. He ended up with just Under-21 caps, and only seven of them, crazy really, given his calibre.
Shaw’s impact felt even more uplifting because it was a counterpoint to the mood of the country at the time. With the dark clouds of unemployment, strikes and bombs in London parks scurrying across the landscape, a glamourous footballer who scored fabulous goals brought hope as well as joy.
Villa have lost a legend and English football has lost a player who lit up the 80s. His family have lost someone very special. Shaw was a very likeable and down-to-earth human being even to those of us who only encountered him briefly in the Villa Park press room. Just a really approachable guy. My thoughts with Gary Shaw’s family, friends and former team-mates. RIP.
-
This almost seems worse now, after the brief bit of hope last night. Rest in peace Gary, one of the greats.

Gary Shaw, you gave me tears of such joy as a teen and today you give me tears of sorrow.
All the boys at school wanted to be Gary Shaw and all the girls at school wanted to be with Gary Shaw. A true Villa legend gone to early.
HEITS
-
Thank you for making my mid-teenage years ones of sheer joy at your ability and the wonderful goals that you scored, the trophies we won and to us you were one of our own.
RIP Gary Shaw

He was majestic on the shit pitches back then. He’d have killed it on today’s surfaces and in the modern game.
-
Summed up succinctly, RIP Gary.
-
One of my biggest Villa heroes, I even copied his hairstyle in my teens, though the glasses kind of ruined the look.what a player he was, and what a privilege to watch that great side he was such an important part of
Rest in peace Gary Shaw.

Hi.
Sunderland fan here.
Just want to offer my sympathy with you all for the sad loss of Gary Shaw.
He was a magnificent young player, and lost to the game as a player way to young.
RIP Mr Shaw.
Good man. Thank you.

Tribute from Dennis Mortimer
I want to recognise the contribution Gary made on the pitch and to pay tribute to the man he was away from it. His role in the team that took Aston Villa to the Division One title in 1981 and the European Cup a year later, when we became champions of Europe, cannot be understated.
He’s the first player we’ve lost from that era. The contribution he made is reflected in the fans and the love they have for him. Those who saw him play and those who have been in his company since he retired know how much playing for Aston Villa meant to him.
I speak for all of his former teammates when I say we’re going to miss his smiley face. He was a rascal and he lived his life to the full.
We’re going to miss him dearly at Villa Park. We’re going to miss him when we meet up and celebrate the anniversaries of our successes. His absence when we come together for the Bayern Munich game in the Champions League in a couple of weeks will leave a big void. It’s going to be a sad day without him.
Gary was one of those players who was a natural footballer. I remember doing an article about him once and putting him in the same sphere as Kenny Dalglish, he was that good.
He was a Birmingham lad and he gave so much to the football club. His passing leaves us with a big void. He was a very likeable person who would talk to anybody. When we were playing, he was a young man who revelled in playing football. After he finished, he loved the opportunity to talk about the game, to talk about Aston Villa and his part in the club’s history. He was such a lovely lad. It’s such a shame that we’ve lost him far too soon. Most people who have met Gary will have gone away with a good impression of him.
I know Villa Park will come together on Saturday to remember what he did for the football club. The fans will remember him because of his exploits, and we shall keep his memory alive through those successes.
A lot of love goes out to Gary’s family and friends from all of us.
Rest in Peace, Gary. Thanks for the memories, you won’t be forgotten.

That's a lovely piece from Dennis.

You'd be hard pushed to find anyone that has a bad word about his ability as a player, or that met him as a player or later on. It would have been easy to be bitter over being as good as he was and having it gone before your 23rd birthday but Gary never seemed to be. He just carried on loving the Villa.
-
Being born in 1972 he was my first and biggest ever Villa hero when my dad started taking me in 1980, and today's news is more upsetting to me than anyone else in the public eye who has passed and who I've not met. I'm in this picture of his goal against Coventry on 27/02/1982 against the yellow arrow. Rest in peace Legend.

Such very sad news about a true Villa hero.
Your memory will live long and you'll never be forgotten by so many.
Condolences to friends and family.

It was generally harder to win a cap back then, although it was ridiculous they took Gary to Australia and then never played him.
Yes, it does seem bonkers, doesn’t it?
-
Hi.
Sunderland fan here.
Just want to offer my sympathy with you all for the sad loss of Gary Shaw.
He was a magnificent young player, and lost to the game as a player way to young.
RIP Mr Shaw.
Much appreciated
-
I finally cracked while watching the piece on Midlands Today. Central News only gave him a cursary mention which I thought was poor.
-
Shrewsbury had a few last glimpses of his talent. He's still thought of fondly by a lot of them that saw him play there, including something like a 5 minute hat-trick.
Scored the only goal when they knocked Wimbledon out of the cup, too, back when Wimbledon were top flight.
I was at the Gay Meadow to witness that goal (26/01/91), the last I saw him score; a typically instinctive Gary Shaw goal, having also seen him score on his Villa debut at Bristol City (26/08/78).
The hat-trick was against Bradford City on 22/12/90, scored in 4 minutes and 32 seconds!
-
I'm too young to really remember anything about Shaw as a player but I know I met him a few times as a toddler and again a couple of times as a teenager and from the latter my memory is of a great guy who loved football, loved Villa and loved the part he got to play in our history.
-
Thoughts are with his family, and all of H&V posters who held him dear.
He was before my time - but whenever I tell anyone older than me that I'm a Villa fan - they talk of the great team from the early 80s - and he's always one of the first players they mention.
Googled some of the players from my childhood, and he was younger than most of them - he was way too young - and judging by what you're all saying a legend in every sense of the word.
RIP - HEITS
-
I was born in 74, so only saw peak Gary Shaw live before the injury, a handful of times. Shaw and Withe typically scoring to get us back to 2-3 vrs Liverpool in December 82 being one of them. But despite that Gary Shaw for me is the epitome of the golden memories of my childhood. I’m 8 playing Wembley singles in the park with my mates, my new Villa kit on and I am Gary Shaw, living the dream for 10 minutes on a summers evening.
I’m 50 now and I feel far more affected by this than maybe a man of my age with a family of my own should. Gary Shaw is not only a villa legend, he’s my childhood dreams too. I feel pretty devastated.
I know he will get a deserved send off on Saturday, but I hope the real tribute is against Bayern, surely his greatest moment was against them so seems fitting.
RIP Gary, HEITS

Yes me too.
I like everybody else loved Gary Shaw.
I was lucky enough to watch him in his pomp; play against him in 1987 when the Villa bought a first XI to Birmingham Uni to play the 1st team, (we lost 9-0 & his touch was unbelievable); and also meet him socially when we both occasionally sat in the hot tub at the David Lloyd in the mid 90's.
He was a brilliant player and a lovely bloke.
Rest in peace one of our very finest.

Indeed, the way he struck the ball like that, the ball coming across him so he took it first time on his weaker foot, drilling it low and hard into the corner of the net, was simply outstanding technique.
-
I will be forever grateful to The Boss. I saw Gary Shaw on numerous occasions but was always too shy and awe-struck to speak to him properly. Whilst selling H&V one sunny afternoon he came over, shook my hand and said, "Hello, Lee." Thanks for getting him to do it, Dave.
-
A desperately sad day as one of my boyhood idols leaves us. He was the player who added stardust to the Villa and the one we all wanted to be. The former Holte Ender with the pop star looks who made it to the first team had the world at his feet. I’m so glad he achieved what he did before his injury but would love to have seen him have a long career with us. And it really rankles that Ron Greenwood never picked him for England.
I’ve spent ages today reading tributes and have been amazed by the comments coming from fans of other clubs saying how he was their favourite other team’s player in the early 80s. If you can find it on Twitter ( my iPad strangely doesn’t link with it ) Henry Winter did as good a tribute as I’ve seen from a non Villa source.
RIP Gary

A few more from non Villa fans
Everton fan
I was at goodison park, early 81,when Villa battered us 3-1. Tony Morley scored goal of the season, but the best player on the pitch by a mile was Gary Shaw, what a striker what a player and he looked like an adonis. The Everton fans clapped Villa of the pitch that day.
Forest fan
The thing about Gary Shaw for me and all my friends, no matter who we supported was that he wasn’t much older than us, he had rockstar looks, was a great player and we all wanted to be him. When any of us scored at lunchtime we were Gary Shaw!!
I'm an Albion fan but I Ioved Gary Shaw. One of the best I've ever seen. I remember that turn on a sixpence to set Tony Morley off for his wonderful goal at Goodison.
-
This one hits hard. Gary Shaw was the reason a young lad in Preston ignored the other local kids in the early 80s with their Liverpool, Everton and Man U kits and got a Villa top with number 8 on the back and joined the lifelong rollercoaster of being a Villa fan. He was just brilliant to watch, so talented.

In Italy, in the 80/81 season, a private TV station began broadcasting English football matches, with great audience success. The season coincided with Aston Villa's historic victory.
I still remember many players from that team (I also spoke to some of their fans I met in Athens for the Conference final in May) and among them Gary Shaw.
This photo dates back to the summer of 1982 when, after the great victory of the European Cup, Gary was voted the best Under 23 in Europe by an Italian magazine.
The award was entitled Bravo and Gary, who came to Italy to collect it, was awarded here by Enzo Bearzot, coach of Italy who had recently won the world champions. Ciao Gary 🙏

Very telling how he just used to be the ball magnet wherever he stood. Sign of a truly great player. Linekar must thank his lucky stars for the career he had just on Shaw getting injured.
-
Just rewatching as many of Gary’s goals that I can find. I was at the Kiev game in 1982 but I’d forgotten just how good his goal was, the angle, the number of defenders around him and the state of the pitch. That goal is one of the best that I’ve seen in person at Villa Park.

I was at that game against Forest 2-2 boxing day - fantastic game of football

I would like to send my deepest condolences to Gary’s family, friends and the Villa fans. We have lost an amazing guy, and I am deeply saddened to hear of Gary's passing. I would like to say when I came to the club, we formed a telepathic partnership that was electric and both of us scored goals that will always be remembered in Aston Villa's family and history. Ron Saunders said I was the final piece in the jig saw but you played an integral part in the success of AVFC.
We as a team made history and I am so proud to have played alongside you. RIP my friend

I'm slightly too young - remember seeing him in the 1987/88 team photos - the season I started going - but didn't get see him play. Despite having never seen him play, though, I used to idolise him. Probably because my dad thought (and still thinks) he was the bees knees.

I was just too young to have seen Gary play in his pomp, but he is the first footballer I can remember and the first I wanted to be - when I was 5 or 6 and Villa were winning the League and European Cup he was the one everyone talked about. It is such a shame that injuries stopped him from achieving what we all knew he could have, but then by the age of 22 he'd already achieved more than 99.99% of players ever will.
It's been really sad the last couple of days, because this is one of those occasions when you feel like part of your childhood has died. I was lucky to meet him in one of the lounges before the Newcastle game last season when we won tickets via the Reward points, and his absolute enthusiasm and belief in the Villa was infectious. He was bantering with a Newcastle fan who had somehow got access, and Gary was convinced we would turn them over by 3 goals - unfortunately that was one occasion where his prediction wasn't as accurate as his shooting! It was great though seeing him there, as despite now being in my late 40s just being in his presence made me feel like that 6 year old boy again.
RIP Gary, you were one of the very best.
-
Would love to see footage of his fast hat-trick for Shrewsbury or his goal for England U21s against Ireland.
-
The first time I saw him post his end of career was at the 96 League Cup final. He was sat in the posh seats above us, and spent the entire game waving to the Villa fans.
-
He was in with us plebs in 94.
-
Absolutely devastated by this passing he was my hero growing up and I've met him a few times he was a true gentleman.
-
one of my first memories of Gary Shaw was a box of tissues in claret and blue with a picture of him on the box (random)
I think I was too young to appreciate him then , but wow what a player , such a shame
-
I would normally move on by now if someone I like in the public eye passes, but I still feel gutted and really flat with this one!

Too early for a decision I know, but I wonder if a big public memorial service will be held and where?

Regarding the number 8 shirt, I didn't realise that Gary wanted it so much as his hero and mine Sir Brian of Little had worn it before him!
-
I was fortunate enough to become aquainted with Gary through a mutual friend Karl Court..
The first time we met I ended up propping Shawy up and him telling me he loved me
Over the years our paths crossed and he was always good company, shy of buying drinks, but always polite, never refusing anyone a pic, always with a twinkle in his eye if there was female company.
The last time I saw him was July last year, he promised me he was going to come to my stag do, and lo and behold the footballer I grew up idolising, came out for a drink with me and my party, Shaun Teale also came with another lad who was attending
But my hero came for a drink at my stag do... How good is that.
Gary Shaw, Baller, Legend, Gentleman
Thank you for the memories
RIP My hero

Nice tribute on MOTD CL ahead of our highlights.
Forgot about the highlights show, will go look on iPlayer.
I’ve just be looking back at some clips, particularly struck by the couple European away goals in the club’s short video tribute https://x.com/avfcofficial/status/1835717028763627557?s=46&t=i0eH9ovn4hH0MJN1zK2sog especially (at 55 secs) the screamer from outside the corner of the box, possibly hadn’t seen it before, I think I’ve worked out was 20/10/82 first leg of our last winning European cup tie, at Dinamo Bucharest. Can anyone confirm? Stunning strike.
I’d been thinking of blubbing when that team were on the pitch for the 40th Anniversary May 2022, https://youtu.be/Jcf9BtnKmQs?si=qSiFXXILhk4vTbNr I guess somehow the emotion of not being there with my Dad but having little AV on my shoulders waving her flag, not long before her 3rd birthday seeing the “old men” from Daddy’s childhood, chuffed to spot us in the crowd.
Nice to read that team will go to Bodymoor the Weds morning of the Bayern match.
Saturday is going to be very strong for a lot of us.
-
Had just about got through the horrible news on Monday by doing that bloke thing where you don't actually cry but strategically blow your nose at regular intervals.
Later, the phone rang. An old mate of mine, lovely bloke, not a Villa fan, asked me if I'd heard that Gary Shaw had died? Cue the floodgates opening.

It's also repeated tonight on BBC 2 at 11.05pm.

Is that a repeat or an updated show with the highlights of tonight's games (Arsenal) ?

Good question. I'd forgotten there were some games tonight so it's probably be the latter.

Listening to the support sing about Gary yesterday was fantastic. It brought back some memories and I could just visualise him scoring the first against Barcelona in the super cup.
I felt extremely emotional but had a huge smile of my face at the same time.
-
Good to hear the Gary Shaw song ringing around Villa Park again. Many would have been singing it for the first time.
-
MoTD covered the tribute well too.
-
I thought the tribute before the game was poorly handled by the Club but the reaction from crowd on 8 minutes and in second half was wonderful!
-
A minute silence while the screens showed a compilation of his talent would have been more powerful but fair play, there was a lot of love for him audible yesterday before kick-off and on the 8th minute.
-
It was meant to be a silence and that was announced over the pa but the crowd were already applauding. So that's what it became.
-
They announced at 2 when they played the tribute that the family wanted a minutes silence.
However a combination of the build up to the teams coming on the pitch and the PA announcer completely using the wrong tone meant there was a lot of noise.
The referee then didn’t follow the instructions to blow his whistle.
A bit crap really and could have been done a lot more professionally!
-

I think at a football game a minute's applause is always by far the safest option anyway. With a silence, there's always the danger of a few idiots ruining it for everybody. As happened away at Luton with the silence for Chris Nicholl. Sadly, it was Villa fans who were the bellends on that occasion.
-
As much as I hate to say it it would have been hard to see Manchester United or Liverpool get it so wrong.
We need to up our game!
-
There were lots of people still outside the ground, shouting at stewards. It's for the best we didn't have a minute's silence.
-
Problem you have with a silence is that there's always people still coming in and/or under the stand. That's especially a problem when a club is having issues getting everyone into the ground in a timely manner.
-
Minute's silences very rarely seem to happen now because everyone just starts applauding
-
Just listened to Matt Kendrick's tribute. Jesus, hard not to have a little cry after that.
I wish Gary had done a memoir though, when you see the litany of journeymen who put out a book on their careers. I know Daz laps them all up, but they're largely formulaic. There must be so many stories that Shaw had which he was too modest or shy to divulge in interviews.

I didn’t know that but if it was what the family wanted, it’s pretty poor from the club not to ensure that was respected. It only needed to be put on the big screens beforehand to make sure it was communicated clearly. The PA announcer is not very good at the best of times.
-
There was no way a minute's silence would have worked yesterday.

He was completely useless, should stick to the win where it lands bollocks.

Surely you just respect what the family want given they were all there.
-
There was no way a minute's silence would have worked yesterday.
It doesn’t work at all anymore.
That’s down to people. They don’t understand the need to be respectful in the way the occasion demands.
Clapping is not always the appropriate reaction.
That said, how difficult would it have been for the club to put it on the screens from 14:55 and leave it there.
At the families request there will be minute of silence.

Nobody knew what the family wanted, first I've heard of it is on here. The people shouting at the stewards outside definitely wouldn't have known. Really odd thing to moan at the club about.

People outside the ground won't see any screens. Minute's applause was the right thing to do.
-
Surely it's the fault of the club that there were still people stuck outside?
-
It was just handled really badly.
If it had been done more solemnly there would have been quiet as there is in remembrance weekend.
If the ref had blown his whistle as announced I think the crowd would have quietened.

They announced it at 2 according to Jon and then not again that I heard. Why not just before the players came out. Anyway, sometimes a minutes silence is right given his relatively young age, the unexpected nature of his passing, and the first of the eleven to go.
There was tumultuous applause at 8 minutes so that type of appreciation wouldn’t have been missed.

It was messed up during a previous occurrence too.
Apologies, but I don’t recall who passed, but a minutes silence was called for, but people clapped.
-
It was handled fine. A well-observed minute's silence wasn't an option, the two available options were:
1. A minute's applause.
2. An attempted minute's silence punctuated by hundreds of people shouting "you don't know what you're doing" at stewards and then, probably, loads of booing.
I reckon option 1 was more respectful.
-
The club could easily have had info that it was to be silence on all screens in the concourses and the big screens, and a pa announcement say every 10 mins. Rather than blaring shit music and pushing club shop tat and other sponsors.
The club could also try getting everyone in on time so there is no noise outside.
The only reason it wasn't the silence the family wanted is because of the club, no one else.

The club knew what the family wanted and should have honoured that.
The fact that the club and tye announcer failed to communicate this is where the problem lies.
It was handled badly and amateurish.

I completely agree.
A silence was by far the most appropriate marking of his passing.
Followed by a massive round of applause and singing of his song.
Plus, we have more fecking screens than you can shake a stick at now.
It’s not difficult to put a message on them.
-
A silence wasn't possible, as explained, not sure why you keep ignoring it but I can't be arsed to say it any more.

The announcer just needed a better tone and to state ladies and gentleman please can I have your attention.
As it was he just kept speaking in the same tone and I doubt most could hear he was announcing a minutes silence ok the referee’s whistle!
-
There were announcements made twice that it would be a minute's silence and not applause but these were made when there was hardly anyone in the ground and no later announcements were made when they needed to be.
But even when there is a minute's clapping and not silence, people start clapping over the eulogy, ruining it.
I know many people on here weren't fans of Doug, but that's what happened with his eulogy too, making a mockery of it.
Yesterday, people clapped over the eulogy and over the scheduled silence, ruining it from my perspective.
I always like to look at the intention behind an action rather than the action itself and people meant well and didn't intentionally mean to spoil anything and that is what I keep reminding myself, but it still seems like every pre-match tribute at the Villa becomes a travesty aside from Rememberance Day.
(I'm also not sure that supporters of other teams appreciate renditions of HEITS during their pre-match rememberances at away grounds and to them it appears disrespectful).
At least the later round of applause and Gary Shaw chants felt like they made up for it.
-

That's also because people start clapping before the announcer has actually had a chance to get more than a few words out,

I get that but that’s where it’s his job to set the tone and step in.
Better signage would have helped too.
And the pre match build up frenzy doesn’t help at all!
-
I agree with all the points you make. It would’ve also been possible to step in and stop the applause and still have the silence

I agree with all of that, and especially the mention of our supporters singing HEITS during or after the remembrances of other teams, which I think is totally out of place, and a pretty awful thing to be doing, really.
-
His sister and I believe, other members of his family were there yesterday.
If they requested silence rather than applause and we fcuked it up, it's embarassing at best and insensitive at worst.
-
It was just handled really badly.

I don't agree. The announcements in the ground are rubbish, both generally and as they applied to the situation yesterday - as CD says, no one knew what the family requests were. The applause was spontaneous outpourings of appreciation for the lad.
It would have helped if the club had made it abundantly clear, before the game, what they intended to do and what the family's requests were.
-

Why can’t you recognise the fact it’s also what the family wanted ?
Remembrance is signalled way in advance - it's the date nearest the 11th November - and they have a bugler to notify the start of the silence.
What the family wanted was not made clear! Was there a eulogy? - I've just learned that here, 2 minutes' ago.

Okay.
In the Upper Holte, almost all the announcements by the PA system are unintelligible. It was entirely unclear what was really going on, other than that the players were around the centre circle and people were applauding ...

OK - that explains why the premature clapping always seems to originate from the Holte and why the Holte End at least carried on clapping yesterday while the announcer said that "a minute's silence will now begin on the referee's whistle".

Yeah. The club didn't clearly publicise their plans in various media before the game ... they could have encouraged people to enter the ground well before k-o, for example.

This is why the Club needs to do better. It should have been much more dignified!
-
The issue as I see it is that applause is the new way, people are in the groove and just go with it. I think it started with a George Best tribute, and is the new way of doing things. People like it because it's a positive way of celebrating a life.
Trying to stop people showing their appreciation in that way is really hard. Putting the message out, to everyone, that it's a minute's silence is really hard to do, and it only takes one person starting to clap before the whole ground does it.
Remembrance Day is a completely different tone, we're remembering millions of people who died in war and a round of applause just isn't ever going to be appropriate.

The applause also takes away the factor of imbeciles shouting during a minute's silence. Sad reflection, but it does stop that. I remember w@nker Manchester United fans (who'd have thought) shouting through the minute's silence for Tony Barton years ago and it spoiling it completely.
-
Is there a funeral and when is it?
-
I prefer a minutes silence, it's much more respectful & appropriate. Spending a minute individual thought about Gary, what he achieved & what he meant to us.
But if they want a minute silence they need to make that clear from the onset before saying anything else, including showing it on the screens. Once they start talking about the person & their achievements it will almost always lead to a round of applause.
I blame Heck.
-
I blame Heck
Really?
I hope that is a tongue in cheek comment as there can be a lot put at his door over pricing but i am proud that Villa always seem to be a compassionate and caring club.

100% this - the amount that turn up right on kick off a lot worse for wear it only takes one muppet to start gobbing off and then the crowd turn on him and then booing etc.
The minutes silence for the 11th Nov is well established in British society and it clearly has a presence with the armed forces in attendance and the bugle.
I thought all the little touches were classy.
The reimplementation of the banner "Shaw, to Williams etc"
The photo in the press box where he sat on match day
The videos and big screen images.
The singing from the villa crowd - half of which i would imagine never saw him play.
I really dont see a lot the club could be criticised for TBH
-
For me, his life was celebrated in the way he would have wanted. Warmth, raucous applause and people of all ages, singing his name.
So it went a bit awry, shit happens.
-
I think some people have missed the fact that we have a grieving family.
Of course the club should have made sure there wishes were carried out, that was all that mattered.
-
Of course the club should have forced 42000, sorry 39000, people to shut up and be silent.
-
Of course the club should have forced 42000, sorry 39000, people to shut up and be silent.
You mean putting notifications on the screens instead of trying to flog stuff, or getting the stadium announcer to announce what was going to happen, to maybe switching off the shite music earlier to make the announcement.
Yeh, nothing the club could have done.
-
I'm not getting into an argument on this so I'll leave it there.

Exactly this. It was about showing class and dignity not being dictated to be a lairy few!
-
Lovely tribute to Gary from Nigel Kennedy at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club last night. He dedicated his show (all kitted out in his Villa top as always) to Gary, who he referred to as a great loss and quote - 'a perpetual 18-year-old who never got married and all that kind of stuff but lived life to the full.' Bless him. Great show too.
-
A fantastic mural on the Witton Pub of Gary.

Or sorting it so several thousand more people were in their seats rather than queuing outside because the ticket validation technology is shit.
-
The picture of the team in front of the 82 mural on the other thread.... they left a gap for the cup*, but they should have also left a gap between Withe and another player for Shaw.
*The gap might have been for Shaw but looks like it was for the trophy to me.
-
It's Shaw! it's Shaw! Gary, Gary Shaw! He gets the ball he scores a goal Gary Gary Shaw .
That was beautiful and most touching to hear ring out around Villa Park. Came across wonderfully on TV I was watching.
Gary would have been looking down from Heaven smiling.
It's first time I heard the chant but can tell it's not first time it's sung.
Well played.
-
Those are not the words of the song though.
-
Ok so what are the words it's what I thought I heard.
Apologies
-
Those are not the words of the song though.
TBF, for someone coming in years after Gary stopped playing, those were the words printed by the BBC as stated by their midland correspondent in his tribute. So an AI would probably pick those up on a search.
-
Gary Shaw, Gary Shaw, Gary Gary Shaw. When he gets the ball he's bound to score, Gary, Gary Shaw.

That's what we used to sing. The Witton Arms has got it wrong. They have put when he hits that ball.

Wolves fans were singing the “other” lyrics on the Witton train last week. Classy as ever, the scruffy fat bastards.
There’s a great story about Shaw doing a Q&A session for fans in a pub in Stourbridge a few years ago. After the session he was hanging around, drinking with the remaining fans and at chucking out time he asked where they were going and they told him they were getting the bus back to town so he joined them. That’s a league and European champion, sitting on the top deck of the number 9 with a few drunk, starstruck Villa fans.

Ok so what are the words it's what I thought I heard.
Apologies

I knew that song before I knew how to tie my shoes, or what even an 'Aston Villa' was.

I remember that Liverpool nicked the song and used it for Ian Rush.

and then Andy Cole.
For some reason i always remembered it as "He's shaw he's Shaw He's Gary Gary Shaw"
the other ting I always rember is that flag "Withe Villa we're Shaw to score"

Withe Evans help we're Shaw to score.

Thank you. That's a great chant!

It doesn't scan with Ian Rush, he's two syllables short of a picnic.

Exact same syllables isn’t it?
-
Sorry, one syll.
Ga-ry = 2
Ian = 1
I guess they stretched out the EEEEn for Ian.
-
Calling Bad English. Two syllables surely, but somehow more fused?
Presuming this is not a wind up, https://www.howmanysyllables.com/syllables/ian

Yeah. Eee-an Rush. Surely?
-
Yeah, I gues I-an is how you say it. The only Ian I know goes by Een phonetically, maybe it's an Irish thing. Gary does scan better though.
-
More importantly, after what felt very underwhelming from the family zone for Wolves, to be in and hear the Holte belting it out full gusto (stilll not got my voice back properly) was more than satisfying and honoured his memory.
I’ve resisted writing about it, but I’d be confident Gary Shaw’s little eddy of consciousness in the collective would have felt/been aware of what happened in the stadium. It made this image, as coarse as it is all the more meaningful. The result was the best tribute, thank you Unai.

It doesn't scan with Ian Rush, he's two syllables short of a picnic.
Exact same syllables isn’t it?
It’s more that it doesn’t rhyme.
In our version we rhyme Shaw with score.
Newcastle fans rhymes Cole with goal.
Rush doesn’t rhyme with anything relevant.
-
Indeed.
Forest fans had the same problem with Pierre van Hooijdonk.

Yes.
And Lawrence said it best:
What happened to young Gary Shaw?
He played for the Villa, he don't play for them no more
And the crowds from the terraces shout for Gary Shaw x2
And the Holte End kids shout out for Gary Shaw
Ah, that blonde-head Brummie kid - he sure could score

It's a verse from a song by Brummie musician Lawrence Hayward, I linked to it earlier in the thread. Go to 1 minute 10 secs here:

Had to stick it on again. It is lovely.
I don’t have the courage to share which Shaw referring Villa song was my ear worm this morning, I think Risso would have very stiff words with me.

You’re spot on Eamonn.
Here in Brum Ian is basically Ee Yan, two syllables. My cousin in Dublin is Ian but pronounced by all the family as a single syllable Eeen. Except for his mom who calls him lazy.

Can't see it has been posted anywhere else yet.

I understand the funeral procession arrives at Villa Park at 1.15pm and leaves at 1.30pm.

Sorry, the link appears to have gone down. Sutton crem. Donations to Acorns.
-
Fine for me. Just donated. However there was nothing in the link about anything to do with Villa Park. Can that side be confirmed on what and how to attend there?
-
That was in the message I received with the above link. I'm sure it will be confirmed more firmly in due course.
-
Yep, fine for me and just donated.
RIP lovely boy!

Come on Villa fans surely we can raise more in memory of Gary Shaw than £2,000? Make a donation to Acorns in memory of Gary and leave your own personal tribute message.
Use this link and scroll to donation. Let’s try and get this up to £8000 for our favourite number 8.

Still struggling to process this.
Goodnight and God Bless Gary .

Have donated to Acorns, but I’m still finding it difficult to believe that Gary Shaw has left us.

It would be nice to think the club would buy, and keep, them for display. But I know it won't happen.
-
Be very sad if a collection like that doesn’t end up in the club archives/museum…but I would have very little faith Mr bottom line will see it that way
-
According to the mail Gary insisted the collection was kept together even though they would likely go for more if sold individually, the suggestion being the club might buy them.
-
Think he sold his medals a few years ago and these are now being resold by whoever bought them
-
Just read the coroners report for Gary, so sad and an awfully sad way for a life to end.
-
Yeah, tragic end, God love him.
-
His Medals sold for £39.500.
Hope it was the club that brought them.

Actually, the medals didn't sell. There was a bid at £39.5k, but that was below the reserve.
