Another one.

It's the shit years that make the good years so memorable.
Third division to European champions in just over 10 years and relegation less than 6 years later. The nadir of 2016 and now.
It's better than the 'fans' of Yanited complaining about how miserable the post Ferguson years have been or Arsenal fans wanting Wenger out even when they won the cup several times.Winning the Cup we'd go ballistic and the manager would become a legend.
File Derby,Newcastle,Forest ,Leeds and others in the eager to embrace some of the glory of yore .

Yep.
In my formative supporting years, we were heading for Division 3.
I remember singing:
Division 2
Welcomes you
Aston Villa
It's been a bumpy ride for we elderly Villa fans.
Make the most of every moment.

I don’t go back as far as the drop to Div 3, I was born in 74. But i started being brought down to VP irregularly from late 82 and started going independently from around 85, things were different back then for kids. My first season ticket was 86-87 and we know what happened then.
So it has been a bumpy ride but one i wouldnt of missed. My teenage kids (17 and 14) have been coming with me for 9 or 10 years so have also had a similar bumpy ride.
Its a crest of a wave with Emery and this team now, but sadly things off the pitch leave a bad taste. We found out with a days notice before the resale day our season ticket seats in the lower holte are being moved. The prices now, are equivalent to a big monthly bill, approaching the levels of my council tax bill.
I will renew even though money is tight, because i love it and so do my kids, its in the blood, but if the current trajectory continues, decisions will have to be made in the relatively near future.
Good article.

A great read as others have said.

Really enjoyed the read Lee old friend. Hoping you're well.
I've renewed my season ticket, but am REALLY disappointed to have moved from the end of a row to the middle of a row. I've emailed the club and they've just come back with the usual stock bollocks answer. As others have said, how can we get things so wrong off the pitch, but so right on it? Being on the end meant that I could run down the steps celebrating (VAR permitting). I don't like being hemmed in. I'll see if I can have a look at my new seat at Foo Fighters in a couple of weeks or so - the club have said that I won't notice the difference, although it looks like about 10 yards to the right to me.....
-
Done. Nice one, Lee.
-
Agreed.
-
One of my favourite seasons home and away for Div 2 under Sir Graham. Football isn't about buying success .

How much was your Foo Fighters ticket? Modern footballs no different from live music, theme parks or cinema in its spiralling cost

You don’t have the same expectation to do all of those things nearly every week, even when it’s shite.

Not quite the same but i've seen this sort of answer a few times.

100% agree with everything written here.
It’s nothing a lot of us weren’t saying in 92 when Sky invented football. Football is now eating itself, money is king and the loyal fan is being overlooked.
Please never let us move from our glorious home into a soulless bowl.

Difference is nost people will see the Foo Fighters, or Springsteen, or whoever, maybe a few times in their lives. You can't really compare it to going to the Villa every other week.

Maybe not to you or I but that's where footballs gone as a form of entertainment. Even non league.

I've been going since 1966, a lot has changed. I read that and my initial emotional reaction is I agree with every word.
However. Maybe we do look back on the past with rose tinted spectacles. Like most of us I'm more cynical about watching football than when I was younger. Then again I'm more cynical about politics, day to day living in general, food doesn't taste as good as when you were younger, getting drunk does not have anywhere near the same appeal, more people get on my nerves for longer, it's harder to put socks on in the morning etc etc. On the plus side I really don't give a shit what people think of me any more which I believe is very good for my mental health.
Even if I don't get to a game, I can see every kick without having to just read a match report the following day. If I do go to a game I'm unlikely to see anybody getting their head kicked in. If it's an away game we're more than likely not going to be herded around like cattle with ultra aggressive policing.
I take the point about the excitement of the goal in the moment but bathing in the afterglow of a great victory does still last just the same.
As I say I've been going since the 1960s. Back then there were probably old boys moaning about the game not being the same. Overpaid players, ridiculous transfer fees, hooligans, skinheads, Clive bloody Thomas, Alan bloody Hardaker, boring 0-0 draws (it's getting like bloody Italy!), Don bloody Revie and Dirty bloody Leeds. Even the FA Cup, there hasn't been a final like 1953 again.
It was never jumpers for goalposts and the money side of it took over when Alf Common was transferred for the ridiculous sum of £1000 !
If I didn't still have to work and money was no object. I would happily have a season ticket, an away season ticket, and go to every game in Europe and enjoy it all as much as when I was a lad . Well almost as much.
Up the Villa !

What a great post.

Easy to gloss over all the good stuff though. £1.50 to get in. Saturday 3pm KO . No VAR. Pay on the gate home and away. No Arabic Sportswashing. No 3rd kits. Better match commentary. Fewer idiot pundits. Domestic Cups that were cherished. The list goes on. Modern Football is wank by comparison.

I suspect none of us are getting any younger.
