Title: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Pre match thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on May 14, 2024, 06:20:42 PM
So hopefully by the time we kick off it will be Crystal Palace vs 2024/2025 Champions League participant Aston Villa. This will be a very hard game. They are playing really well and that Palace front line is on fire right now. And we don’t do that well at Selhurst anyway. But maybe we can slow them down a little a score 1 or 2 ourselves. And in doing so Ollie gets his 20th league goal.

I’ll go 2-1 Villa. Ollie with both.

Suddenly after last nights renaissance i'm more optimistic about this game than i was a week ago. Palace are the form team for sure and it will be difficult for us. No matter what the result, the players have earned a holiday and deserve it 100%.

Give a breather to all of Pau, Tielemans, Bailey for this. They've all been less than 100% but been getting out there to get the job done.

I can see Tim and KHH starting this tbh.

Palace probably win as Olise and Eze are ridiculous currently. Ollie getting his 20th would be the icing on the cake so hopefully we can create some decent chances.

I agree . There is no point playing players who are exhausted and carrying knocks. Bailey bench. Give kesler and timmy a start see how they do. Hell even tempted to give kellyman and gauci a start.

Even if we lose big who gives a fuck.

They are flying right now but with the pressure off it should be an entertaining game.
It would be great if Ollie gets his 20th league goal.
We should play our strongest available line up.
I can see those not 100% fit not playing (Tielemans, Torres).
Going for a 3-2 win to the Champions League team.

Exactly my thoughts. I won't be there but know some who will, they weren't around back then but I hope they have as good a time as we did. It's amongst my finest memories, kicking off a glorious summer. I also feel that the Manager is held in the same affection as Taylor, not just for their achievements but for the conduct, sportsmanship and good grace, something that is rare amongst the bitter, hypocritical wankers at the top of the game.

In shall be raising a glass while I watch the game, to a wonderful season.

3-3 as well.

Now that 4th place is done and dusted I imagine that our game will not be one that is shown live. City's and Arsenal's games will of course be shown, so I guess the other one or two will be those that focus on who gets Europa League qualification.

The lads had a lock in upstairs at Albert Schloss til at least 4am. Ollie and Matty Cash came downstairs to DJ, gave Hi-ho Silver Lining a spin.

Just something to consider for your predictions.

They're young and have enough days to recover. They'll be professional and will want Ollie to get his 20th goal.
If Spurs had won last night I think they'd all have been tucked up in their beds by 10pm.

71 points sounds a lot better than 68. Unai will demand a victory.

Getting Champions league qualification is a bit like getting promotion. For a player it is a doubled edged sword. Villa players will know the cheque book will be out this summer as the squad will have to be strengthened/upgraded to meet the extra demands of Champions league football.

This is the last match to impress the boss and leave a lasting memory over the summer. The fans can rejoice but the players can't, they are playing for their future.

For this reason Palace 2 Villa 3

Some of them will be in squads, not sure how many of them will get a large amount of playing time. They'll get extra time off after anyway. Point being, we don't need to be resting anyone unless they're genuinely fatigued and an injury risk.

Yeah agree - getting these guys a start would be the best thing we can do for the future.

Maybe Tielemans to help him get fit for the summer.  I would rest Bailey - for me just edged player of the Season from Ollie.

I would start Ollie to see if he can get his 20th

Bailey and konsa would be getting rests for me

Kesler and kellyman would be getting starts for me. Its a meaningleas game why nit give them a start see how they do?
Give duran a start too
Yeah agree - getting these guys a start would be the best thing we can do for the future.

Maybe Tielemans to help him get fit for the summer.  I would rest Bailey - for me just edged player of the Season from Ollie.

Only player should be afforded a start is Gaucci
I would go along with VillaTim selection for outfield players. 70 mins or so.
------- Martinez ---------
Konsa Diego Torres Digne
----- Luiz -- McGinn -----
Bailey ------------ Tielemans
---- Duran --- Watkins -----

I can see why it might be a good idea to play a few fringe players but I wouldn't be playing too many of them personally. Maybe Duran and Tim to start then like someone else said, give the others minutes as the game goes on.

Agree. Unai won’t want to let standards slips, this is a tough game despite nothing tangible riding on it, most of them will have most of the summer off. I think throwing KKH in against Eze or Olise would ruin the kid. Same team that started against Liverpool.

Unless they are at the Euros...plus they would probably report back in the last week of June.
Those involved in Euros would probably get an extra week.

I'd play a couple of the bench players and hope OW gets to 20.

I think Watkins will definitely start, so that he has a chance of 20 goals, but the rest of the line up could be anything depending on who’s been partying the least.

Barring Luton this season, and even allowing for Bournemouth, it is the worst stadium in he Prem, and it’s as if it has been frozen in time for decades, and from the outside it resembles a prison in parts.

They're building a massive new stand to dwarf the three other sheds surrounding the pitch, so it'll soon resemble Elland Road instead.

Quote
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Will Hughes is unavailable for Sunday's match against Aston Villa.

"Will is out for the last game against Aston Villa,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

"It looked terrible on the video – in the game and on the video – but fortunately everything is OK with his ligament.

"He has a bone bruise and he will be out for several weeks. He should be back for pre-season, but he is out for the last game."

Jefferson Lerma will return on Sunday, however.

"Jefferson Lerma is fit and will come back to the squad, and all others are fit," he added.

"I’m always pleased if a player comes back from injury.

"It’s good, but he was out for four weeks now and this was the first week of training, so he has to get back into the rhythm, but it’s good to have him back.

"We lost Will, and we lost Ama [Naouirou Ahamada] because of the red card, so both are not available and this gives us another option in midfield."

Yeah, Watkins getting to 20 is all I'm bothered about now.

Within reason. If it finishes 10-1 to them with Ollie scoring for us it wouldn’t be great.

They're not good enough for a squad that has a chance of improving to challenge for the league or get into the last 16 of the Champions League.
I think they could both be sold - similar to Ramsey, JPB & Archer last summer. They should be making more first team appearances now if they're good enough.

With Germany v Scotland kicking the Euros off on June 14 I wouldn't have been totally stunned to see McGinn rested.

Ditto Martinez. If Argentina go deep in the Copa America he could be in action up until July 14.  Other players will be back in pre season training for two weeks by then.

There's a definite case for that pair not aggravating pre existing injuries ahead of that schedule and grabbing the break when they can.

Crystal Palace can finish Top 10 (depending on other results) if they win this. They haven't finished that high in 10 years. Would be a good season for them, so I can see them going all out.

I'm not sure which Villa Will show up today. We'll either be so relaxed and free flowing that we'll put 4 or 5 past them like some of the early season games, or we'll all have switched off after Tuesday and look like we did against Olympiakos.

10th in 14/15, so I guess 9 years rather than a full 10, but I think it would be something they're aiming for.

There was some stat about Watkins and goals a few weeks ago, and I remember thinking he'll hit that next record no problem, there's loads of games left. And here we are on the last game of the season and we're just hoping he'll get the 20.

Not that I'm complaining. I'm sure he feels it more than us. Just funny how hard it can be to get over that last hurdle.

I may be completely wrong but I thought Watkins was playing within himself against Liverpool. Certainly Duran made a big difference.

My guess would be he is far more concerned about not getting injured for the Euros than he is about scoring 20.

Bailey and Pau are playing through injuries I'm fairly sure so can see them being rested today.

If Tim can't even start a dead rubber for us then he needs to be clearing his locker out but I think he'll get a start today and will be a very good test against Eze, Olise and Wharton.

I'd also like to see KHH get a start for the same reason but will probably be Konsa at RB.
