We were the better side all night. Some crazy incidents, mistakes. But fair fucking play to them for keeping up the fight to the end.
-
Bonkers game.
Love Duran.
-
Proud of 'em.
'Sobs.'
-
Teams are crap if they drop points after being two goals up.
-
What a point that is!
-
Bloody hell
-
Massive heart and balls in this squad.
-
I mean come on, that was a cracking performance

Your not on my ignore list, well said
-
John Duran - the (young) man!!!
-
Good fight back. Spurs need to win both now. Hoping they do not find a way tomorrow.
-
Fair play great fight back . Duran the hero he needs to play more next season . Bailey McGinn take a bow .
-
What a game. I really enjoyed that. I had to turn the match thread off though. I was so far behind in time it was driving me nuts watching and knowing something had happened.
Get in.
-
Dhuran Dhuran two goals on film said the commentator
-
I thought we were exceptional going forward tonight, could've had 6. The defence is really fucking frustrating but get most of the squad fit and ready and We can take another step forward next season.
-
Great point in the end
-
Fucking massive point! Lots of energy relatively speaking. Spurs are going to lose anyway.
Edit. Diaby needs to bed-in, have a pre-season, a pair of glasses....
-

Is Grealish fit? I'd nearly put money on him scoring the winner for Man City tomorrow.
-
Never. Ever. Give up.
UTV
-
Mental - we were dead before big Jhon came on. Massive effort from him and Diaby did brilliantly.
-
I live on Pheasey and I heard the crowd singing after Duran's second goal!
-
I mean come on, that was a cracking performance
We were playing very well at 1-1 and 1-3 as well. Even had we lost it would have been a really decent performance.
Not that you'd think it from the match thread.
-
Over to you Spurs, go and beat this Man City team and do it by a few goals...
-

TBH, I think Citeh are the only team where the whole squad is fit at this time of the season.
-
Proper end of season with all to play for, brilliant game of football, a game to cherish, Villa represent that never give up thinking, we did it, got the point, thought the Villa fans where unreal, fantastic night of football
-
A brilliant point, the team gave it their all tonight. UTFV

It is but I think we deserved all 3 there, I honestly think that was our best performance for a while, created loads and looked dynamic and energetic after being 'leggy' for a while.
Durans 2nd was the goal we desperately needed, one that was a bit of luck going our way.
-
Not being funny, and we're away and they're in good form, but that second half Villa could beat Palace and make all of this worry academic anyway.
-
Brilliant game for a neutral, heart attack fodder for a Villan!
Should have won it, but a good point and should be enough to see us take 4th.
-
Incredibly proud of the squad today. Ran their socks off and earned a good point.
-
What's happening after the match? Is the crowd hanging around? Lap of honour? What's the atmosphere like?
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
-
Well, that didn't do a lot for the blood pressure, but at least a draw is no good to Spurs now. Brilliant cameo from Duran, first finish was top class, the second he deserved for his effort.
Plus, next time anyone says we're soft and keep giving away 2-0 leads, we've got something to point at that shows we can come back from two goals down ourselves. Results like this can do a lot for a team's belief, and remember this is a team that had title ambitions a few weeks ago, and they were two goals up, and it STILL took a great 87th minute save by Allison to prevent us winning.
That's also 7 points from 9 from the three teams above us when they came to VP. That's an excellent return.
-
Don't underestimate how much confidence that could give the players going in to that Palace game.
I hope to see more Duran next season.
-
How am I supposed to go to sleep after that?
-
A decent point.
Pleased for JHON DURAN
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No.
-
Thanks Duran Duran for a new mood on Monday.
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No.
Just seen table. I am dumb!
-
A point will do against Palace won't it?
-
Duran needs far more game time next season, hugely unpredictable and I love it. Diaby will come good with an intensive pre season. Torres played very well, SJM was amazing first half, visibly tired second half. Probably Zaniolo's best game... 😅
-
Could not be prouder, you can see how much it means to the players
John McGinni I salute you 🫡
-
In the grand scheme of things that is a huge point, we can play great stuff at times we just need to defend better.
-
Superb performance, fantastic energy and commitment right to the last minute! A draw was the least we deserved.
-
Attacking wise there is clearly so much to build on for next season. Get the defence sorted out and we could replicate the sort of season we've had.
-
That was fantastic from Villa. We looked a threat all game long and had so many chances. Also, when was the last time we clawed back a two goal deficit?! Championship maybe? No idea, let alone against a team like Liverpool. I'm so proud of them. They've given everything all season long.
-
A point will do against Palace won't it?
If Spurs beat City and Sheff Utd with a 8 goal swing
-
How am I supposed to go to sleep after that?
I'm cracking open the ketamine.
-
New Moon on Monday etc… That was nuts.
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No.
The most Spuds can get is 69, with two wins. With a draw and a win the most they can get is 67, and we're on 68.
-
A point will do against Palace won't it?
Short of Spurs getting +8 goal difference in wins against City and Sheff Utd, yes, a point would be enough at Palace.
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No.
5 points difference so they need 6 points and hope we get nothing against Palace, or if we draw there, they need to score 9 goals in the next two matches.
-
Probably Zaniolo's best game... 😅
I did think similar - if we end up in the Champions League by a point, then him getting injured so that Duran came on a bit earlier than he otherwise would have will probably be one of his most important contributions.
-
That was a brilliant effort Villa, where the players got the energy from I don't know, delighted for big Jhon.
-
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.
-
That reminded me of the last two games in 90, both 3-3s. Pleased we didn't lose, I would just love us to get one last win and see the season out on a high to cap tonight.
-
Nice to quieten the doom mongers on here, suspiciously no words from the usual suspects
Excellent performance for the most part, great spirit to get back in to that and almost win it.
Had the chances

Oh do fuck off with that.
-
This Villa is built different.
-
Awesome fight back. Would have taken a draw before the game. Proud of the lads! UTV boys!
-
I must admit I turned off when I thought their disallowed goal was going to make it 4-1. Cue big sulk, I love Abu Dhabi posts on WhatsApp. Turned back on when it went back to 3-2 just in time to see big Jhon's second. Big point, changes the dynamic tomorrow night. Nearly there
-
I mean come on, that was a cracking performance
Was it...after all the misses great that lady luck finally smiled at us at the end! That was a cracking finish for Duran's first goal. Finally one of our forwards showing a bit of composure on the night. Credit to Diaby who kept going all night despite many mistakes, he caused Liverpool serious problems and our hearts too. Less said about our back 5 tonight the better, our defensive setup needs a complete reconfiguration over the summer.
Martinez 3 - worst error of season, poor for second too.
Konsa 4 - just don't want to see him at right back again
Carlos 5 - miss of the season, we need better next season, had a decent second half
Torres 4 - needs summer holidays asap
Digne 5 - terrible for their third, was the best of our back 5 until then
Tielemans 6 - fine goal, used ball very well but a traffic cone without it
Luiz 7 - thought he played well, lovely through ball that Bailey/Diaby made a mess of
McGinn 8 - slow start, pity we had to move him from the left, great captain of the club
Bailey 7 - magic at times with the ball but nowhere for their second
Diaby 7 - terrible miss and a number of other mistakes when well placed but he kept going and caused huge problems
Watkins 7 - great assist, caused problems, not sure what the shouting match with Bailey was about
Zaniolo ...missed a big chance, last time in a Villa shirt, Duran first goal was top quality, Chambers, give him credit for the turnover
-
Interesting McGinns comments about Duran there- said he was a nightmare team mate at times and that they would have to spend the next couple days trying to keep his feet on the ground
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No they have to win.
-
Interesting McGinns comments about Duran there- said he was a nightmare team mate at times and that they would have to spend the next couple days trying to keep his feet on the ground
Yeah I thought they were interesting. I thought he was going to say he is a nightmare for the other team but no 😆.
-
Well done Villa - amazing to get something from where we were - great character. Also - a much better performance - and Tielemans back is a big boost. So if we need to get something on Sunday hopefully they've got it in them.
We need to sort the defense out, because if we don't let in another goal this season we're pretty much guaranteed Champions League. I think Konsa is struggling play at right back - particularly on days like today when he was facing an overload at times. I think Torres isn't fully fit, and Digne could probably do with a rest. Unfortunately, I think Carlos is just probably isn't as good as Mings, Torres or Konsa. Hes had some good games this season - but not enough.
I also don't know why our defenders go up for set pieces - they seem to do more harm than good.
Well done to Diaby, who had some poor moments but kept going - did great for the third goal and brilliant at the end when he chased back and ended up with cramp.
Duran does look like he could be a top player. I thought McGinn was good too - and was subject to consistent fouling. I imagine that's the last we see of Zanilio - shame it never really seemed to click.
Great last 20 minutes of football at Villa park for the season - hopefully Man City get the job done for us tomorrow, if Spurs win - then they deserve to take us to the last day.
-
Bat shit crazy match.
We must be the closest you can get to getting 4th without actually getting there yet.
-
Interesting McGinns comments about Duran there- said he was a nightmare team mate at times and that they would have to spend the next couple days trying to keep his feet on the ground
I said ages ago how it seemed like Duran and Diaby had the same problem on the pitch (bad decision making) but for polar opposite reasons. Luckily for us Duran's extreme levels of confidence tend to have better results than Diaby's complete lack of.
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No they have to win.
Yup, a draw gives them 64 with a game to play. We now have 68.
-

Yes. We were bossing it.

Nil points for Duran?
-
I know it’s exciting but the quality of the maths on here is schoolboy at times
-
Thought Bailey was best on ground, credit to the players who are obviously playing injured our bench looked very light. Fantastic result considering.
-
Just took the dog for a walk in the rain to calm down. That was insane. After the last few weeks we were dead and buried, and then from nowhere... Rarely do I want City to win but please don't let this go to the wire I don't think my poor little heart can take it.
-
Absolutely a match thread for the ages, that.
Jesus Christ, some proper, proper glass-half-full-OF-DONKEY-PISS doomery at work.
I am no happy clapper, far from it, but fuck me.
Like I said, a top, top match thread.

-
Duran meant that finish. It's a Duran finish.
-
This time of the season at the top end with it at stake, a match like that, fuck me this is so much fun and what we as fans went through years of utter dross for.
-
Not read any comments on here yet, but I want to give a bit of credit to Diaby. I was getting so frustrated with him most of the night, and in many ways he had a fairly terrible game, but he kept going, never hid, defended and created. I think he'll be great next season. McGinn and Bailey put so much in tonight, and I thought Tielemans looked great until he understandably tired. UTV
-
I honestly think in the spirit of us all being Villa fans, we should lay off criticism of match thread reactions etc.
Emotions are high.
I called someone a troll, and regret it.
Peace brothers and sisters.
-
Watching in Greece and an ultra of a firm called the Zulus with me !! Thankfully he is ( obsessed ) a fan of whoever beat Olympiakos last night.
I’d have taken a point before kick of to be fair. Seems we were great in parts , missed a couple of sitters ( Carlos take a bow !)
But what heart. What substitutions. What a team. What a season. What a club
-
Really dug deep for that and point the least we deserved. Only got ourselves to blame for not winning though. Kamikaze defending.
Piles the pressure on Spurs to go for it tomorrow
-
And a word for Bailey who was brilliant again. His maturity is there for all to see when Duran equalized. Went to the kid, tapped his chest to say well done but get up we have a job still to do. Really impressed with him all round.
-
Hours away from CL now. Onwards and upwards.
-
Duran meant that finish. It's a Duran finish.
Yep. Classic top thigh shank.

I have no issue with any fan venting when we're losing 3-1 at home, but the performance wasn't actually that bad, and we certainly didn't deserve to be losing. A point is a fair result in the end, but getting a late winner certainly wouldn't have flattered us.
If some fans want to see "terrible performance" where I see "terrible scoreline, but actually not a bad performance", then I'm fine with it. It would be a boring world if we all saw things the same way :-)
-
I wrote on the Champions League thread that the possibility of a £1600 payout had calmed my nerves. No it fucking hadn’t. And my reaction when that equaliser went in (on the pub table , beers spilled) showed me that £1600 was nowhere near enough. Absolutely fantastic game and so proud of the boys. What a massive boost of confidence ahead of Sunday.
-
Now thats whats im talking about!!!
Fucking passion and desire thats what winners look like and thats the villa we know exist!
So proud of them tonight.
Well done diaby for sticking to it he was terrible 1st half but absolutely sensational 2nd.
Duran fucking love you 😍😍😍😍😍
-

I honestly can't agree with this. The same handful of people make the match threads a fucking horrible experience for everyone whenever we're not leading comfortably and then go silent as soon as we are on top, it's fucking annoying and creates a far worse atmosphere than there needs to be on here.
-
Unai was already planning for the next game by taking off Luiz & Tielemans, incase we need the win.
What a game and in the end unlucky not to win - if the other team pips us to 4th, then no regrets and still a step up to the next level of European football (although I'll be hugely disappointed).
-
Yeah. I suspect if you look at match threads from the forums of basically any club that has forums, they'll be very similar to ours. With any fanbase you'll have a mixture of the over positive, over negative and those in the middle. It's just human nature
-
Shame it’s not all 3 but could spurs still do us if they draw tomorrow?
No they have to win.
That is why this point is massive.
UTV
-
Bat shit crazy match.
We must be the closest you can get to getting 4th without actually getting there yet.
Given that we couldn't get two points tonight then yes, you're right. What a draw means is that Spurs have to win both of their last two games regardless.
I hate having to cheer on Wankchester City, but...
-
And a word for Bailey who was brilliant again. His maturity is there for all to see when Duran equalized. Went to the kid, tapped his chest to say well done but get up we have a job still to do. Really impressed with him all round.
Agreed, I thought he was the best player on the pitch
-
So proud of them tonight.
No you weren't. Earlier they were a "disgrace" apparently.

That Alison save from Diaby at the end was trop draw - Diaby was unlucky there and deserved a goal for his effort.

Durans 2nd was the goal we desperately needed, one that was a bit of luck going our way.
Yes, we did deserve the win. We can go and beat Palace instead just for fun as we will already be in the Champions League by then.
-
Aston Villa captain John McGinn to Sky Sports: "It's a brilliant effort towards the end. We got a bit of luck. It's been a tough few weeks with lads coming back and playing through the pain barrier. This place got us going.
"Big Jhon [Duran] is a bit nuts at times, he's a nightmare to play against. I don't think it's been difficult for us as players.
"There's some of us that have never been close to the Champions League in our life. The manager has a no-excuse mentality. People have written us off and we've floated under the radar. We'll have our Man City tops on tomorrow."

One for the xG fans.....
We had the second highest xG of any team this season tonight with 3.53

Its the universally loved method statisticians use to determing the quality of chances created throughout a game and the amount of goals a team are expected to score from those chances.
Everyone on here has nothing but praise for it
-
I dont know what I would have done if that diaby chance had gone in - I was a mess all game, no idea why as I didn't expect us to get anything from it.
-
That was an absolutely incredible game. At 1-3 I thought we had had it but so much credit to the team for keeping going. That would have ended up 1-5 a while back but this team under this manager are a totally different proposition. So many top performances out there but Bailey had his best game for me and of course Duran was just brilliant. City to thrash Spurs now to send us to the promised land

Manchester city can't risk the draw either

That Alison save from Diaby at the end was trop draw - Diaby was unlucky there and deserved a goal for his effort.
I couldn’t believe he kept it out
It was good, but Allisson didn't have to move much. Diaby was under pressure but slightly wider or slightly lower and it was in. (Not a criticism of Moussa, just stating the save seemed more straight forward for a keeper of his quality).

You didn't mishear. They've just taken the two minute interview and taken 30 seconds of quotes and put them together. He mentioned Youri playing for Anderlecht in the Champions league, for example. It's not a direct and complete quote of everything he said.
-
Holy shit, that was insane.
We did enough to win that several times over.
Big props to the VP crowd for bringing us back into the game.
PS. The ref is a complete and utter wanker for allowing them to kick SJM to pieces on numerous occasions. I'm so pleased it was Mac Allister that lost the ball for our second.
-
I just wish we could all stop waiting for the wheels to come off. We can all get passionate at times and the match thread is often bollocks being said in heat of the moment but we are all villa fans aren’t we?

Give it a rest. Emotions of the game as the poster said. We are all villa fans and want us to do well. Some are better emotionally than others
Lets just all move on and enjoy tonight. Its fucking wonderful. We are so close to CL now i couldnt be more happier
Up the fucking villa ❤️

That Alison save from Diaby at the end was trop draw - Diaby was unlucky there and deserved a goal for his effort.
Diaby with more confidence wouldn't have given Allison a sniff of saving it. Bounced up at a lovely height for him onto his strongest foot, strikes it low and he isn't saving it. At least he got it on target, the one earlier in the second half to put it in the side net was desperately poor and the one in first half was shocking.
But...I thought he had a decent game and caused a lot of problems.

Had a very good game, created several chances and massively contributed to what we got.

The match threads are everything that you've ever heard around you at a game. With the added bonus of PWS's mood changers before anyone one else knows.
-
I know it’s exciting but the quality of the maths on here is schoolboy at times
My bad. I thought we were on 67 not 68!
-
"Champions League You're having a laugh" i remember a few singing this as we left Fulham A at QPR under DOL .
We aren't having a laugh now .
Chilled Cava, on a Monday night .. ? suits you sir .

I think Sky have misquoted SJM there. He definitely said that Duran was a nightmare teammate ;D
He did, and said they're going to have to struggle to get his feet on the ground the next couple of days.

JM "Hiya Jack, its John McGinn. Are you playing tonight ?"
JG " Nah, wont even make the bench"
JM "Any chance of borrowing your shirt ? Only need it for a couple of hours"
JG " No worries, I get it. You know what, it hasn't worked out that well for me up here, I wouldn't mind being back in a Villa shirt, can you have a word with Unai ? "
JM "Hahahaha. Fuck off"

Give it a rest. Emotions of the game as the poster said. We are all villa fans and want us to do well. Some are better emotionally than others
Lets just all move on and enjoy tonight. Its fucking wonderful. We are so close to CL now i couldnt be more happier
Up the fucking villa ❤️
People have asked you many, many times to give it a rest when you're constantly moaning every match thread though, it goes both ways, if you're going to post miserablist nonsense every week you're gonig to get called out on it, especially in the aftermath of a game like today.
-
An incidental bonus of the comeback draw was to keep a reasonable goal difference between us and Spurs. Could be significant, with them going to Sheffield United last game.
-
I honestly think in the spirit of us all being Villa fans, we should lay off criticism of match thread reactions etc.
Emotions are high.
I called someone a troll, and regret it.
Peace brothers and sisters.
I honestly can't agree with this. The same handful of people make the match threads a fucking horrible experience for everyone whenever we're not leading comfortably and then go silent as soon as we are on top, it's fucking annoying and creates a far worse atmosphere than there needs to be on here.
Got a brother who a wind up merchant, when he mentions Aston Villa I just say yes,no,if you say so,he just sits there seething because he doesn't get a reaction, that's what I do on here with some posts now and don't even acknowledge it and won't comment even if it sensible
-
Fantastic game, the grit and determination to keep going was outstanding.
This team will be a real force with a couple of extra quality signings.
-
Tonight was just the second time Liverpool have failed to win a Premier League game having led by two goals in the 84th minute - after a 3-3 draw with Southampton in August 2000.
Aston Villa had never previously turned a game around after losing by two goals at that stage.
-
Fantastic comeback, brilliant goals. Defensively, we have work to do but going forward, we are such a handful. Diaby is in and out but did a couple of things that were key tonight. I hope Man City draw tomorrow but after tonight, Villa will prove they have the fight at Palace if Tottenham manage to win. Some great performances and SJM was super honest with his appraisal, the players are knackered but still giving it their all. We have shown that we can mix it with the best this season and I am looking forward to seeing how we progress in the transfer market. Unai is our King. Good to see Tom Hanks going barmy too. Well done Villa. Proud of you.
-
An incidental bonus of the comeback draw was to keep a reasonable goal difference between us and Spurs. Could be significant, with them going to Sheffield United last game.
Yep, if they beat City by a single goal, a draw would be enough for us at Palace unless Spurs beat Sheff Utd by 7-0.
-
So proud of them tonight.
No you weren't. Earlier they were a "disgrace" apparently.
So you have chosen to come on here, after such a remarkable victory and where everyone is happy to take a pointless dig where i said diaby was a disgrace (and other posters were criticising him not just me for his first half display) yet you say nothing to those at all. I wonder why?
So according to your genius mentality a villa fan who alot of people who know me personally on here you think im not delighted with tonights win?
God grow up mate seriously
Let me fucking enjoy this win ffs
-
We drew
-
Nice to quieten the doom mongers on here, suspiciously no words from the usual suspects
Excellent performance for the most part, great spirit to get back in to that and almost win it.
Had the chances
I give it a go, they were crap,I not renewing my season ticket,I throw all my Villa shirt away,I will support someone else like Birmingham City, now they are going places
-
I do follow the match threads on here but only to read the squabbles
-
Tonight's result means continues our record of not losing back to back PL games all season
-

I completely misheard McGinn then.
You didn't mishear. They've just taken the two minute interview and taken 30 seconds of quotes and put them together. He mentioned Youri playing for Anderlecht in the Champions league, for example. It's not a direct and complete quote of everything he said.
That's fair enough, things being cut, but the "against" bit is made up. I mean it doesn't matter, I just thought I went mad for a bit.

If im unhappy at how a performance is going im not going to be fake and say oh yeh villa are doing well i am going to express my opinion
Its like im going on here being psoutive and getting criticised for being positive so i cant win with some of you and to be honest i dont really care anymore becausesome have their perception of me.
I follow the guidelines and dont call people' names unless they attack me.
Nothing personal paul at all against you. I have no issue with you whatsoever. Lets enjoy this. We are on verge of greatness !

However that would not be enough if we drew 4-4. But this time tomorrow, we will be in the CL.
-
The thoughts in my head during the game are hyperbolic to say the least . At one point this evening I didn’t want to be in the Champions League anymore 😳😃
-
Must have missed our winner.
-
Oh I said a prayer before the end to Michael The Archangel, seems he was listening
-
Squabble when we want...
Squabble when we wantttt....
Heroes & Villains, we squabble when we want.
-
Thats a cracking result after being 1-3 down.
Not a great start, but we pushed until the end, which is surprising considering how knackered they looked in the last game.
Lovely couple of goals from Duran. I think over the course of the season, he has won me over. He's still a bit raw, but he's really growing into a super little player.
A point makes it a necessity for Spurs to win both games, so its a good result in the end.
Really happy with the work rate, very happy with the result.
Be interesting to see what happens tomorrow now.
-

Week after week you slate players in our best team in thirty years and I am glad to see it finally being called out. .
-
I tend to view the match threads as a place to jabber the random thoughts that go through your head as you're following the game. I shudder to think of the nonsense I've posted in them over the years, and I'd hate to be presented with them in a court of law. But I do draw the line at abuse. Howl into the void if you must, but we're all on the same side here.
-

We are a top class team and have been for over 18 months. Those players, even the fringe players, have all played their part.
-
Can we not go on about the match-thread stuff? I only popped-in to briefly look at half-time and am glad I left it, but there's so much joy from our comeback tonight, the forum-squabbles is a shitty distraction from it on this thread.
-

I'll just remind people that (at least on a desk top browser), you have a buddies list within your profile with the option to add people to follow, or people to ignore. Saves a lot of hassle if you can't see what has been written.
-
If im unhappy at how a performance is going im not going to be fake and say oh yeh villa are doing well i am going to express my opinion
No one is asking you to be fake, what they're saying is to take a breath and thinkbefore you hit post. Honestly read back everything you've posted on match threads in the last few weeks and tell me it doesn't come across as both a little unhinged and massively hyperbolic. I totally get being frustrated but right now you can either accuse everyone of bullying you and act like you're doing nothing wrong or you can accept that what you're doing is annoying people and try to wind it down a little. It's your choice but if you go with the first option people are going to keep calling you out over it and I don't think anyone on here wants that.
-
Considering how knackered they must all be that was one hell of a shift. Bailey was sensational bearing in mind he was strapped up and playing through the pain barrier.
-

OK, that probably is enough of that. We've all said our piece, everyone knows where the block poster button is if it's really important to them.
As wiser heads have said, let's leave the match thread in the past now.
-
we are fucking awesome 💪

I do wonder what is worst behaviour of being negative to team performance on match threads or being negative towards fellow posters on here.
-

Massively disagree
But each to their own and all that.
-
I have to admit, the stick Bailey got on the match thread for not leaving the ball for Diaby, but I don't think Diaby would have sent half the defence into the stands before squaring to Watkins.
-
The Bailey Watkins squabble was intriguing, i guess it shows how intense they were all feeling
Was very weird.
I got the impression from their body language that Ollie said something along the lines of "you should have left it for the deeper run of Diaby" and Leon - quite rightly - took umbrage.
I like that he's got a bit of fire about him. I've never really seen him as that sort of player, but he's really stepped up this season and is clearly quite vocal.
-

Bailey has been unbelievable this season, and that's no exaggeration.
I could have picked half a dozen players for player of the season but went with him, and I'm glad I did as since then I've watched him limp through the pain barrier in the last week heroically, and then turn in a performance like that.
In the words of the great man, "what a player".
-
You can never say that this group of players give up. They have given every last ounce of sweat and how they found the energy to come back tonight I’ll never know.
Absolutely fantastic, the lot of em!

Leon should have let Diaby take it from an onside position, and Ollie was telling him, I think.

We have scored so many brilliant goals this season. Whilst the ball hit Duran's knee and went in, it was a great move with clever passing and movement. 8 goals for Duran this season and he has three absolute belters.

Yeah, I can only imagine that's what Ollie said. It's right but heat of the moment and all that.

Loved the way Emery celebrated that third reflex goal by Duran.
He is one of us.

That's mad when you think he's filling for the most durable and reliable centre forward around and getting bits and pieces in games.

I couldn't take the match thread tonight.
I couldn't even watch on TV, I put it on my phone on the app and played Fallout 76 to distract me.
1 think that point does it now. Spurs can't and won't beat City tomorrow surely. Even if they do a draw vs Palace should lock it up anyway because of the goal difference barring Sheff getting tonked.
That own goal summed up our luck recently though and I'm very happy we didn't let it define the game as things like that used to in the past.
UTV and Blue Mooooooooon you saw me standing alone!!!
-
What a finish to the game!! If Diaby had pit that one in I think the place would have erupted. No point analysing a game like that, just hope that Manchester City see of Spurs tomorrow now.
-
I don't mind 'Good luck Citeh from the Shires around Birmingham' but I draw the line at Blue Moon..Tsk!

Same here, went to bed early just after Liverpool second goal, she decided the same didn't want to be on her own, intention was to wait till the end or even tomorrow morning for the result, she pipes up, you lost,I said there only 60 minutes gone, that was it couldn't keep off the phone then, the wife is now buried in the back garden

My lad he could have passed it to Duran,?

There’s obviously players out there carrying injuries and playing through the pain barrier…and there’s player who may not be injured but absolutely dead on their feet running through treacle. I noticed SJM getting handed some kind of tablet (presumably pain killer) when he went to the touch line after going down holding his ribs, so it begs the question how many of them are being managed and/or taking injections/meds to get them through these last few games. Also what it does show is determination and great team spirit led by SJM…they are a collective throughout this regardless of whether we win, lose or draw.
-

Torres and Cash were having a bit of a (mild) barney during the Olympiakos game too. Not great to see things like that after a season of looking like a very together team, but I'd imagine the last few weeks have been very tough, emotionally and physically, so I'm sure everyone hugged and made up after.

If there were any justice that was a 7-4 to us at least or at worst. Jhon Duran is a lucky charm. And poor Ollie, the Diego Carlos WTF followed by the Diaby not calling Leon to not touch that ball denying him his 20 (assuming Diaby would have managed to find him).
-

There's the obvious walking wounded, Emi, Torres, Tielemans, Bailey, Olney.
Then the likes of Watkins and McGinn playing with knocks.
Before we even get to the ones under the radar.
-
I'm not posting this in a negative way, but..... the way we seem incapable of playing a full 90 minutes to the best of our ability is incredibly frustrating. It happened at the start of the season too, and I'll allow for the injuries and fatigue at this point of the season, but at various different times throughout it feels like the whole team just collectively switches off and we're nearly always punished for it.
Anyway..... it's a learning curve, and we've come such a long way in such a short time that I'm sure we'll cut that out of our play soon enough.
-

Watkins messed up a tap in for Luiz a few minutes later. We did some daft things tonight in both boxes, it was a crazy game.

Not quite. Should be upside down I the pub now, rather then hunkering down for work tomorrow ....
-
Where to start with that? Stupendous game really. I thought we were fantastic for most of it and a defeat would have been harsh. Zaniolney going off was a blessing in disguise, Duran was immense whne he came on. Even Klipperty said the place was rocking and I'm sure Mr Hanks enjoyed it.
Come on the Mancs. Over to you.
-
Much of that breathless game encapsulated our season; so exciting going forward, some tremendous play, but with the occasional howler and frailties when defending set pieces.
We deserved to win and would have, if it hadn't been for Alisson, or the earlier profligacy in front of goal.
The comeback made for a great end to the home season and a great reception at the end for the players and their families. Diaby's young son looked like a future player in the making!
-

Bit unimpressed with Hanks, never came into the Troc and bought everyone a pint.
Amateur.
-
How the fuck did Luis Diaz not get booked the fouling little toe rag?!
-
How good was Tielemans tonight . Levels in this game .
-
Sometimes the score don’t matter. It’s more important that you just love your team.
-
Gave up his own free time to be there, mind.
If/ when he confuses us us with West Ham as that other great mate Call me Dave did, he'll deserve his invective bubblebath. Until then.
-
Just seeing the goals now and Duran's second was definitely karma for every bit of bad luck we've had over the last few weeks/months. Pure fluke but we'll have it
-
How the fuck did Luis Diaz not get booked the fouling little toe rag?!
MacAlister doing GBH on McGinn, ref is looking at it five yards away and then casually just shrugs his shoulders when we're asking where is the yellow at the next break in play?
The top teams are that for a reason but their midfield players don't half get away with clear and obvious tactical fouls that break up play and reduce influence of key players, Bailey was also getting the usual kicks in the first half with no punishment aswell.
-
Carragher and Neville

That's us fucked then.
-
Terrific fightback to get the draw: bit reminiscent of the comeback from 3-0 down against Sheffield Utd to get the draw late on in the Championship. Was a night game then too!
Thought John McGinn and Leon Bailey were terrific. I was rooting big time for Ollie to get his 20th goal: hope he can do it Sunday!
-
Would be great if the pressure was off for them all on Sunday. I reckon he's wanted it too much these last couple of games. Although I suppose he did find the net tonight
-
I gave a big cheer watching the game in the pub on about 95 minutes.
Sky showed a Villa fan with a big hair bear bunch hairstyle.
The south London locals were a bit WTF?
But I had a good couple of evenings with him and rest of the Yorkshire Villa when we were playing in Warsaw.
A lovely bunch of gentlemen.
-
I thought Gakpo was at least a metre offside for their second - presumably I missed something?
Mixed emotions. Feels like a point salvaged but we could have won it at the death with Diaby. But the big one was Carlos in first half - Jesus wept. Hats off to every single one of them for dragging that performance out of tired bodies and for keeping going at 1-3 with five minutes left.
-
Yeah, the ref was poor wasn't he? You could tell early in the game he wasn't going to give us much. Was he the one who reffed that Forest v Everton game?
-
Very mixed emotions, after some very iffy performances we were great going forward and created enough opportunities to win a few matches. Silly mistakes in both penalty areas saw them coasting to a win in second gear. Id have taken a draw beforehand and would have ripped your arm off for one a few minutes into the second half. But also annoyed we missed the chance to put this to bed by missing so many clear chances.

It was similar to the Real onside the other week. He could have stood there all match and not been called offside if the the ball went no where near him. But when the ball finally came he was behind it and being played on by Konsa / Carlos as well. No defender dropped back to mark him.

The good vibes from tonight won't sway Emery and the brains trust about what we need defensively.
We need much less Diego Carlos, to begin with. I wouldn't be totally stunned if we listened to offers for Konsa n'all.
-
You can understand Carlos going for that, but it's an absolutely shocking miss
-
Klopp in his post match interview alluded to the fact that they were being overwhelmed in midfield and he had to make the changes bringing on Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Nunez. Of course subs made by Unai trumped that with Chambers' absolute central midfield masterclass and Duran ripping them apart.
-

Fair fucks, that's some achievement missing that.

You can understand Carlos going for that, but it's an absolutely shocking miss
Excellent clearance taking the ball away from the striker about to tap it in.
It did feel like Watkins' own team mates were conspiring against him hitting 20.

Zaniolo has been a bad influence with the ol' betting.

We've had a top class keeper getting a hamstring injury and then (obv) some sort of head injury going into this.
And then DC who just can't who just can't who just can't control his feet at CH. And we've still got a point.
Will take.
-
I thought Gakpo was at least a metre offside for their second - presumably I missed something?
Mixed emotions. Feels like a point salvaged but we could have won it at the death with Diaby. But the big one was Carlos in first half - Jesus wept. Hats off to every single one of them for dragging that performance out of tired bodies and for keeping going at 1-3 with five minutes left.
Just seen it a few time on Telly and Gakpo was initially in an offside position when ball was moved out wide to Gomez. When Gomez crossed Gakpo was actually behind the ball. There was a check on Gomez but he was level.

Shout out to the Liverpool fans clapping through the half time HEITS tribute, they were pretty vocal for the most part.

Agreed, I did look over during the tribute and there were a considerable number of away fans applauding.

Anyway, just home. What an evening, wow! Looked like it was going to be one of those nights. Emi howler, chronic defending for their second and usual post half time set piece fuck up, but what a come back.
I hope Tielemans is fit for Palace, because he made a big difference to the midfield. Luiz wasn't at his best again, but thankfully McGinn was and Youri just gives an extra bit of control and some killer passes.

One for the xG fans.....
We had the second highest xG of any team this season tonight with 3.53
What does that mean?
Villa’s highest, not any team.

Found the Liverpool supporters pretty irritating. Most of their chants are dirges.
Thought Watkins playing within himself (possibly because of the Euros) and Bailey can’t sprint and hasn’t been able to for a while.
Thought McGinn immense and drive the team on and Duran so positive when he came on.
Loved the lap of recognition after the game and Unai’s reception. Best bit of the night.
Was Unai booked after the equaliser and if so why?

Proud of them. Proud of every last one of them. What absolute balls this team has! Sometimes bravery means a big block, but to be 3-1 down, to Liverpool, after the run we've had, with the injuries, the tiredness, the pressure, and to keep taking the ball under pressure, playing their way, not giving up...that's such footballing courage. Amazing.
Let's hope they do get a well-deserved freebie on Sunday, but even if we have to get something from the game, they've really made it seem more possible now. Never know when they're beaten this team. What a bunch of lads.

Very well said, sums it perfectly.
-
Hate to reignite this, but I do want to check.
For Liverpool's second, I presume the rule is that a body part that a player can't score from cannot be offside?
Because from the AVTV footage, the Liverpool player who delivers the ball across definitely appears to have his full arm (possibly a shoulder and part of a leg) beyond our defensive line when the ball is played to him.
No conspiracy nonsense, just the penultimate pass looked a little iffy to me.

So proud of them for that, to come back when they're clearly running on fumes, just shows such huge character.
Undone by 3 really poor goals and lacking a cutting edge for any of the 4 or 5 nailed on, gilt edged chances we created. Inexplicable for the first, we just switch off for the 2nd (although I've seen stills that make him look offside) Dougie I think just doesn't follow him when he becomes his man and Digne loses out a bit too easily for the third. Good header mind.
Diaby should score in the first half and the place would have exploded if he'd have scored that chance at 3-3. He did fantastically well for the 3rd with the driving run.
Tielemans is such a class act. We've missed him and his calm presence. Uses the ball really well.
Really unclear to me how they were allowed to kick us to pieces all game without repercussion?
Salah looks like he doesn't give a toss anymore, the little cheat.
Not sure how Carlos misses. Or Zaniolo. But whatever, had by far the best chances throughout, but we lack the luxury of bringing £140m worth of subs on. For banter purposes or first sub naturally gets injured.
-
Really unclear to me how they were allowed to kick us to pieces all game without repercussion?
Indeed, even taking off our claret and blue-tinted glasses, they were wondering on KUMB how Diaz the 'ankle snapper' hadn't been booked.

It was similar to the Real onside the other week. He could have stood there all match and not been called offside if the the ball went no where near him. But when the ball finally came he was behind it and being played on by Konsa / Carlos as well. No defender dropped back to mark him.
What I don’t understand about this interpretation of the offside rule is how are defenders supposed to defend against or mark a player that is blatantly in an offside position and therefore has an advantage whilst holding a defensive line intended to catch players offside. You couldn’t get a more distinct and obvious “interfering with play” than a player that has been effectively goal hanging in an offside position with the advantage of being ahead of the defensive line to get an easy tap in and score a goal. It shouldn’t be a defenders responsibility to “drop back and mark” a player that is blatantly offside. No doubt we’d have benefited from this during the course of the season but that doesn’t change the fact that the current interpretation and application of the offside rules are broken and not fit for purpose as they are.
-
It's been like it for a while now so it's unlikely to change but I agree, it's always been bollocks.
-
Holy shit, that was insane.
We did enough to win that several times over.
Big props to the VP crowd for bringing us back into the game.
PS. The ref is a complete and utter wanker for allowing them to kick SJM to pieces on numerous occasions. I'm so pleased it was Mac Allister that lost the ball for our second.
This. Every single word. Still buzzing. Just how clinical is Duran?
Special mention to McGinn who just never, ever gives up. Both he and Bailey drove us forward throughout. Unbelievable effort and skill from them both. Bailey will be at home in the Champion's League, he's pure class, a real joy to watch.
-
It is exactly bollocks. For context, the issue I have with a goal like this is that it’s clearly and undisputedly the same passage of play and the player can’t be “passive” or “not interfering with play” as he scored the goal. It’s ridiculous bollocks.
-
Just home. So proud of that team tonight. How they came back from 3-1 down was fantastic. Played some superb football and certainly didn't deserve to get beat..UTV

That must’ve been why the messages kept coming over the tannoy about not going on the pitch. They could’ve just told him directly.😬
-
The fact that Emery picked up as many yellow cards in the match as their entire team shows you how bad the ref was.
-
We were awesome.
Some observations on Liverpool.
1. They are quite a dirty team on the sly. The foul count was overwhelmingly on them and that's just the ones the ref gave. I don't think there's an outfield Villa player without stud marks on their feet or ankles.
2. Salah looks a busted flush.
3. Why did that Elliott kid have a load of crispy fried noodles on his head?
-
Apart from having Frankie Allen wearing black playing for them, this game once again showed that teams like 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' can no longer turn up and take the piss. That said, it is particularly galling that those red tossers just south of them managed to do so (see you next year you ******).
I have chosen to wear my Emi 'I'm a believer' T-shirt to work today, along with my claret and blue watch just to annoy those French people who just can't let it go.
UTV! FTF!

Demitri_C you’re the worst poster on here by a million miles. You can’t wait for us to fail.
What a load of bollocks 😂😂😂
-
Wow. Football, bloody hell. Nobody would have seen that coming, starting with the world’s number one making a couple of hugely uncharacteristic errors for their first two goals. Thought Konsa struggled with Diaz and Digne can’t defend. Carlos was ok but what on earth he was trying to do with that attempt near goal (won’t class it ‘on’) was weird. Thought apart from the assist, Ollie was a bit off it today. But McGinn. Wow. He was an absolute titan today. What a performance. He took on all comers. Tielemans really does ooze class when he’s on the ball. He really makes us tick. Apart from his finishing I thought Diaby was excellent and it was great to see him running at people again. Bailey, loved his fire with Watkins. And then there’s the chaos panda. Really, I thought he should have passed it to potentially 3 more experienced players around him for his first but that’s not the way this kid is built. What an introduction. You never know what he can do. Lots of passion and fire and it may be the point that gets us over the line because Spurs now have to win tomorrow.
-
If im unhappy at how a performance is going im not going to be fake and say oh yeh villa are doing well i am going to express my opinion
So paul my final bit on this, as i think we need to wnjoy yesterday as that was fantastic for the club - the same way you condemn me why you not condeming those that call people names? I might come across negative when villa are losing as its a emotional game but some fool ive never even engaged with on here called me a clown etc etc. You excusing name calling because you dont like negative posts? There was alot of negativity in the match that in first half from a host of posters not just me.
And please dont call me unhinged again. Im not calling you anything or describing you any way. Lets be respecfful yeah?
I will try work on my posts in future on match days but i cant be all happy if we play crap thats just me.
-
The day after what a night.
We just need city to do us a favour tonight. Come on you blue men!!
This game remind me so much of the sheff utd game in championship.
Proud of them that 2nd half we really showed alot of heart chatchter and desire to get a point. What a huge point that could be
If spurs lose today just hope we rest players like bailey for palace. Guy needs a break.
With the bailey ollie argument i am ok with that. Squabbles happen you emotions are high and you desperately want to win. It happens to the best of us. Im sure they are pals again today

The ref was truly shocking.
-
McGinn was our MOTM - absolutely fantastic, we struggled in defence, but some of the passing from Pau into our midfield was a joy to watch.
Tielemans made a massive difference for us in midfield.
The guy who stands / sits behind me in Lower Holte - who wanted Diaby taken off after 20 mins and then said that if Diaby is not taken off at the first substitution he was "going to kick off" - must be feeling a bit of an idiot this morning
Hopefully City will do us a favour and beat Spurs tonight.
Agree about the Ref, he was very poor.
As Unai and the main heads at the club have stated that this is just the start, looking forward to see where Unai can take us over the next few seasons.

The limbs for 3-3….wow !!!!!

Its all been so said, so will keep this short. Got home at 11ish last night after the lap of honour, full of adrenaline, couldn’t sleep for ages. Every single one of them footballing heroes, even the ones who struggled last night.
In my 40 odd years of going down they are easily one of my favourite teams. Love them, the heart, desire and no little skill.
Special mention to our leader SJM, Leon one leg Bailey, total hero, and of course the genius that is Emery. Nearly there.
-
What I was relived about last night was that the result gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy the lap of honour in a positive atmosphere. A defeat might've made it very different.
It's the least the manager and players deserved, and indeed, us fans.
-
How the fuck did Luis Diaz not get booked the fouling little toe rag?!
How come Elliott (or was it MacAllister?!) didn't a yellow for taking McGinn out?! - he then went and got a yellow for kicking the ball away.

Yes, totally. I was utterly perplexed on their second, and I think I know the rules of the games and their interpretation!

I do ahve a sneaky feeling they could go like utd have a post klopp hangover.

Diaz, Mac Alister and Endo we're all very lucky to not get booked and even Elliott only got his for kicking the ball away. Those 4 spent the first 75mins doing the standard rotational fouls you see so often from sides like them. McGinn, Bailey and Tielemans were all on the end of some rough treatment to try to stop us building any pressure.
Funnily enough the 4 subs he made stopped them from being so aggressive and we suddenly found time to open them up. Including the goals I can think of 5 very decent chances in the last 15 minutes.
-
Proper ****** trick from the Ref, booking Emery. It's this sort of pernicious, pathetic, jobsworth behaviour that makes people dislike refs. He knows Emery will accept it with the good grace that he always demonstrates, in that it was a correct decision. Then take a look at other managers, subs and back room staff that pile onto the pitch for other teams without censure and then you'll see how lame it was.
Let's face it, if Woolwich win so much as a corner, it's a massive fucking pitch invasion and lap of honour, involving everyone down to the fucking tea lady.
-
Good point Paul. Their changes were meant to sew up the game but did the complete opposite. Given we took off Luiz and Tielemans, our engine, and brought on Chambers and the nut case. SJM ran the middle on his own after that. He was superb.
-
I was convinced their goal was onside last night and I was sure ours was offside so I was ok with the verdict. Now looking back, I’m not so sure. Neither seem conclusive so surely both should have stood or both should have been ruled out. It’s a flawed system.
I hope the change to the automatic version makes some difference. However some of the rules seem to be very subjective, both for offside and handball where it never was that complicated before.

I'd like to see some sort of review board implemented, ran by former players and not the FA. People like Keown, Rosenior to be on it. A football think tank that improves the game.

Gerard nearly broke Boateng’s leg at Anfield and was sent off. A real horror tackle.
Wasn’t Staunton sent off against us as well?
-
I also thought that making 4 changes weakened them, taking the piss at 3-1 to play it out, Wonder Manager. Backfired as Steve said, SJM was then in charge.
Also the routine fouling, it was Macalister who did SJM, SJM took his revenge on the wrong player and got booked.
Pathetic that their first yellow was for kicking the ball away.
I also guarantee that if the ball had hit one of our defenders hands when jumping in the box a Pen would have been.
Anyway, Villa to go forth as hopefully Angie baby and his boys ship 4 to Citeh

Was there any merit in the handball shout at the end? I haven’t seen a replay of it.

Great comeback well done lads.

Still buzzing after last night. The scenes in the upper Holte for those two late goals were amazing. Can hardly speak this morning...

Not really. The sort of thing that would only be given for Man Utd against us.
-

McGinn's yellow wasn't really a revenge yellow, was a sensible tactical yellow to stop them breaking after we'd lost possession round their box.

An actual BBC report of the match this morning describes our third goal as a Moussa Diaby shot, deflected in off Jhon Duran.
-
Yea the atmosphere was brilliant last night. Well done to those that went
-
Absolutely brilliant night - Another of those games this season where even at 1-3 down, you had a feeling we could still get something out of it.
Players seemed to have recouped a little bit of energy in midfield and up front, but not sure what is going on at the back of late - Defence has been in disarray for weeks. Digne and Konsa in particular.
Special mention for Moussa Diaby - Yes, he missed a few chances last night, but was a constant thorn in their side, didn't stop running, and lasted the full 90 minutes which is a rarity for him. I think he could be a special player next season.
Unbelievable atmosphere, especially after our second went in. People bouncing all around the Upper Trinity, myself included.
Hoping City finish the job off tonight, so that we can relax and enjoy what remains of a monumental season, and look forward to that Champions League music echoing around Villa Park in September.
*And please, please, PLEASE, let Ollie bag a goal against Palace on Sunday - He absolutely deserves that 20 premier league goal record!
UTFV
-
If ever a game summed up the season that was it. Some brilliant performances, effort & desire mixed with a few errors and wastefulness. A game we should have won & only a brilliant save from Becker prevented what would have been absolute carnage.
We looked dead on our feet by 70 mins but somehow a patched up weary team dragged the effort to come back.
They targeted McGinn & Bailey for some treatment & it failed. How Diaz never got booked I'll never know. They'll be vulnerable once Klopp & Salah have gone.
-
An actual BBC report of the match this morning describes our third goal as a Moussa Diaby shot, deflected in off Jhon Duran.
If it was a shot, it was weak. If it was a pass, it was too strong. It was the latter though. I think Diaby hit it hard thinking the player could take a touch and drop it in front for the shot, but he lifted it too much for that.
-
Good job the bestest defender in the universe Van Djik was missing from the line-up. He also missed the match when we won 7-2 IIRC.
-
Thank fuck I was there and not on the match thread. There were some there moaning about missed opportunities but I couldn't have it and just kept clapping and encouraging and others around did too. These players, this team, need positivity and an arm round the shoulder.
What a game what an atmosphere. Brilliant spirit from this team. The desire and will is exceptional.
I'm not going to complain about anyone, they all tried so hard, that criticism just wouldn't be fair or right.

Yeah, looked like he really over-hit the pass. It looks like one of those where you are going for the quick one-two the run and his momentum meant that he hit it to Duran too hard before then trying to run beyond the defender for the return.
Still, all's well etc.
-

I absolutely cannot stand Van Dijk. The way he walks on in that over the top Christ the Redeemer pose, fuck off with that shit.

Exactly, we're overdue a bit of good fortune, and if that's the goal that secures us Champions League football I'll happily accept it. It feels that everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong for us lately, so one pinging in off Duran's knee after an overhit pass is completely fine by me.
-
One fortunate goal each on the night, I don't see a problem. We'd more than earned it.

Not sure about, he was heavily involved in their first two goals, especially the second where it was his long diagonal pass to Diaz that took out all of our defence.
-
It was a sensational atmosphere, I was up on the very back row Upper Trinity A2 and the noise from the Holte was deafening. For even Klopp to mention it tells it all. If Diaby had scored I genuinely think the place may have just spontaneously combusted!

Salah was strange last night. Was making Digne look like Nicky Shorey all first half and then almost completely disappeared in the second.

It was a bit like Atletico Madrid in the UEFA cup, Collymore/Duran setting up the grandstand finish and then Hendrie/Diaby with the 'what if' moment.

He was playing that day, Alisson was out though
I think that's his point.

In the pub after the game I heard a bloke telling his mate that it was still 3-1 when he left. So not even the excuse of trying to beat the traffic.

I absolutely cannot stand Van Dijk. The way he walks on in that over the top Christ the Redeemer pose, fuck off with that shit.
You are so eloquent Risso when praising these demigods.
-
The Duran goal from outside the box was reminiscent of Bruce Rioch.
-
Thank fuck I was there and not on the match thread. There were some there moaning about missed opportunities but I couldn't have it and just kept clapping and encouraging and others around did too. These players, this team, need positivity and an arm round the shoulder.
I had a little browse though that and yes there are couple of proper throbbers posting.
-
My missus - "why do you wanna go when its on the Tele?" - you can't describe being there on nights like this one. Magnificent meltdown of a football match. Our response to all the setbacks of the last few weeks is a thing to be proud of. The atmosphere was just special. The scousers played their part on and off the pitch - did anyone notice how many of them joined in the half time applause for our fallen - a lot of them and respect to them they did so. We gifted a quality side a first minute lead and let them build up a three goal lead - no coming back from that is there? - wrong!!. Its been a fantastic season and last night kind of summed up the roller-coaster of a season.
Villa, i was proud of you yesterday morning and even prouder of you last night.
It went out live all over Europe and me babbies did us proud.
Unai you are a genius mate.
Thank you.
-
An actual BBC report of the match this morning describes our third goal as a Moussa Diaby shot, deflected in off Jhon Duran.
Fucking idiots.
Duran physically lifted his knee/thigh higher to direct the ball on target.
Its as clear as day on the replays...

I was moaning about the early-leavers on another thread, but there's a guy next to me that always leaves with at least 20mins to go (*to catch a train apparently). The amount of times he's missed goals/comebacks this season is beyond comprehension.... but long may it continue! 😄

I left with 10 minutes to go.

It's the match thread though, I suppose.
I always find it amazing how people who demand positivity can't bear anyone not being so. Surely you're too busy basking in the radiance of your own sacred joyfulness to notice?
Up the fucking Villa.
-
I stuck £20 on Liverpool to win yesterday, just to soften the blow if we lost.
Bet 365 paid out when they went two goals up. Result.

I feel that during the game, its difficult to keep ones emotions on an even keel.
Some people can, which is great, but others cant.
I know I cant.
I try to stay away from the match thread for that reason, or only post when I am about to explode.
Or, if we are playing well, lol.
But it's difficult for some to keep their cool while the game is ongoing & wild swings of opinion can happen.
But we are all Villa fans & all want what is best for the club...
-
I left with 10 minutes to go.
I missed both goals as had to drop my sister in law home. Gutted 😔
-
I missed their first goal, wasn't too bothered about that.
-
Bloody good job their effort was ruled out, 4-1 would have made things look very different.
If that goals given we could have been in massive troublw nit just the result but GD. Im still not sure if it was off or on tbh but ill take it 😁
It was off. Very tight but off. I hate those tight calls and stupid lines with a passion but on this occasion I'll take it.
-
Well done lads. A fantastic comeback!
Is there anywhere I can pick up the full game not just highlights? Unfortunately, the game clashed with the Eric Clapton gig I was attending. Thanks.

I was suprised they disallowed it as i was ceetin they giving that one as its liverpool.
Watkins one was blatent offside so right call too

The most pleasing thing about the night was that we put in some great effort, we showed up and wanted to get something out of the game even at 1-3 down. Meekly going out of the Conference and an insipid display against Brighton had me fearing the worst but Emery got the team up for this one, the team responded, the crowd responded to the team and we get something.
I think we will be stronger next season and with Emery at the helm it all bodes well.

That's the sort of miss he'll have nightmares about for years to come.
-
I left the game last night feeling overjoyed or over the moon to to coin a football cliche
It felt like a win
I’m really glad this season didn’t just pitter out and the lap of honour would have been a bit drab,
Brilliant comeback, brilliant atmosphere showed real character players out there giving their all
The best thing about that game is that we were creating chances again, which we haven’t been in recent weeks
We might have been missing them, but at least we were creating them
Worst thing about the night is the defence, it’s shocking really the amount of goals we are shipping in recent matches
I think they’ll be a fair few changes to the back 4 next season
I know Kamara has been a big miss and people look to the midfield for more protection, but some of the basic defending his been rubbish and it has to be called out for it
-
I left with 10 minutes to go.
People were doing it near me. We were saying to them there could be 20 minutes left yet. Each to their own but I will never understand it!

Watkins was initially blatant off, but if you saw the lines on Bailey, it was a probably half a foot in it at most between him on one side, and Tits-And-Ass the other. Close enough that the linesman could have flagged either way, but off enough that on a freeze frame it was obvious before the lines were drawn but a lot closer then it initially looked from the live pics.

I've done it a few times this season and I'm not really sure why I did last night. My mate didn't come so I was on my jack, I think it was just when Zaniolo went over and I thought fuck it, were not getting back in this now.
Need to sort myself out next season.

I read it on the BBC sports page after the game.

How the fuck did Luis Diaz not get booked the fouling little toe rag?!
How come Elliott (or was it MacAllister?!) didn't a yellow for taking McGinn out?! - he then went and got a yellow for kicking the ball away.
i dont think ive seen a liverpool player get sent off against us
Steven Gerrard when he nearly took George Boateng’s kneecap off at Anfield. Big nose Thompson and Houllier came out swinging after the game saying it was a harsh red, which was just mental. Go and find it on YouTube.
Villa won 1-3.
-
Was that the same season Gazza tried to straight arm George across the face and broke his arm?
-
Loved last night, even though after 60 seconds I thought it wouldn't be our night.
My hands were fucking red from clapping by the time we walked down the steps.
We bought two of those soft grey Villa bears before the game to pick up after. We decided on the steps to call the first one Duran, and the second one Duran.
-
Gerrard sending off 6:30 in
Gazza Breaks Arm and then cries.

Whilst I was waiting for the others at the bottom of the Holte steps, some chap walked past me ranting 'John Duran, Hungry Like the Wolf'. It was very amusing.

Well, one is for my mate's lad, the other is to sit in my office! I could tell which was Duran and which was Duran when I got him out the bag.
If you're one of the guys loitering at the bottom of the Holte steps after the game, then I'll have to shout "CLAAAAMPY!" as I walk down some time and see if anyone bolts for it! ;D

Isn't it on the Villa TV memberships?

Yep was there this morning when I was looking for the interviews.

The limbs for 3-3….wow !!!!!
Indeed. Had Diaby's late effort gone in, I honestly think the roof would have come off.....

Got me beat on that one.
-

Had forgotten all about the Gazza one, jeez.
-
The Gazza one was he season before. Like with the FA Cup final, the ref sympathised and didn't show him the red card his challenge deserved. He didn't even show him the yellow even though he saw it and called the foul.

Gascoigne is the single most overrated footballer in history.

Gascoigne is the single most overrated footballer in history.
Yeah, but he was really funny and an absolute lad, which I'm led to believe supercedes ability.*
*before my time so I don't actually know but I'd be wondering what people thought if he was boring and didn't have mental health issues.

Not even the most ridiculous post by me!
-
Gascoigne is the single most overrated footballer in history.

His goal in the 96 Euros showed he had footballing skill, but I would argue his publicity blew how good he really was out of all proportion, so I can see where SE is coming from. However I pretty much only ever saw him for England, not other clubs.
-
He had undoubted ability but acheived the square root of fuck all and played for bang average teams. Yet he's lauded as England's answer to Pele.
-
Bryan Robson was much more overrated than Gazza in my opinion.
-
I'm with SE too. Gazza had a couple of good seasons at Spurs, then ruined his career at 25/26 trying to cripple Gary Charles. From that point on there were only glimpses of the talent.
What did he win?
Entertaining in many ways, a loveable idiot, but a wasted career.
-
He had undoubted ability but acheived the square root of fuck all and played for bang average teams. Yet he's lauded as England's answer to Pele.
Exactly this. He was undoubtedly talented, but the best I can say about him is he had a lot of unfulfilled potential. He just happened to be a ball-carrying midfielder in an era when people in that position were mainly employed to have the ball fly over their heads.
-
Liverpool had the squad depth to bring these 4 players on at 3-1 only to be outdone by a total nutter from Columbia and consumate pro and journeyman Calum Fucking Chambers.

He was rated by his peers though, Gordon Cowans basically called me an idiot to my face for suggesting he was the better player.
-
Gascoigne was brilliant and a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, he was also exceedingly dim and he didn't have good people around him, looking after him, quite the opposite in fact. He made lots of bad choices especially with his career, but there have been lots of very good players who have won fuck all, Harry Kane for example.
-
Yeah, he was different from them.
-
"We all agree, that Platty is better than Gascoigne"
-
But then (and correct me if I'm wrong) but Cowans always came across as humble about what he could do. Which is partly why he was never seen as one of the best players where others wallowed in the publicity.
Although I would also state that the amount of other teams football seen when Gascoigne was at his pomp wasn't much, so you either judged players with how they played for you, or on the occasional live TV match. Of course it helped if you were also based in the same city as some national press was based for promotion as well.
-

As I said earlier Klopp said he had to do that because Billa were dominating. He under estimated the genius of Unai.

None of them did the dirty, niggly shit that Endo, Elliott and Diaz had been up to which ment we suddenly had time to pick up the ball in the centre of the pitch and carry it. Before that we'd been relying on moving the ball and not letting them 'line us up'.
-
"We all agree, that Platty is better than Gascoigne"
if Gascoigne had David Platts mentality he would have been better than Maradona.

The problem with that analysis is that Maradona had Maradona's mentality and he was still better than anyone who ever lived.

I hate Platt and his mentality. He can fuck off anytime he likes.
-
Gazza was brilliant, but about 20 years ahead of his time. He was a tricky, skillful, ball-carrying midfielder, who came through at a time when pitches were still regularly like bogs, and the midfields he competed in were often packed with the strongest most physical players, rather than the 'best' players with the ball. There were better passers (sid for one), better tacklers, better dribblers, players with as much if not more flare than Gazza, but he had the ability to do a bit of ALL of that, in the middle of the pitch.
If he was 20 today, he'd probably still have a great career in the top flight, but he wouldn't stand out in the way he did in the late 80s and early 90s, because today, most teams have at least one midfielder with great skill who can beat a player and be a bit unpredictable. Back then it was much more of a rarity.

Cowan's modesty says more about him as a person than a player. I know which one made the most of their talents (as a player and a coach) and which one I'd have in my team.
Leagues, promotions, European trophies, coaching and all-round decent guy vs one FA Cup winning final, in which they played about 10 minutes and would have been sent off if not stretchered off. Oh and fcuking up a World Cup semi-final.
-

He got all that love for the World Cup and it was Platty that had saved England's arse from another early exit.
-
Fuck me, I've just read that was the ref who was in charge with that VAR fiasco at Spurs earlier in the season when Liverpool had two sent off as well.
No wonder he was eager to please them.
-
That was a shocking Refereeing performance in fairness last night .
-
With apologies to posters on this board, I've always viewed people called 'Simon' with a bit of a side eye.
-
That was a shocking Refereeing performance in fairness last night .
I didn’t think it was that bad. Main failure was lack of yellows for persistent fouling.
-
First thing I heard as I came into work today- "you were bloody lucky." This from a Liverpool fan. Just fuck right off. Sick to death this season of hearing how "lucky" we've been.

"Yeah? Your wife isn't"
-
As if their first goal wasn’t even luckier than our third?! Not to mention the one from Carlos that shall not be discussed.
In terms of the ref, he was as bad as most refs have been throughout the season. I’ve seen this Simon Hooper ref a few times this season and he is more on the incompetent scale than corrupt. As always, it’s their consistency at being inconsistent that is the main issue with the refs, and seemingly their different interpretation of the rules as and when it seems to suit them.
-

We've been fucking cursed since before a ball was even kicked so anyone who thinks that is fkin clueless.
In terms of last night it was liverpool who got lucky that emi made a very rare error, that was missed an open goal and that VAR lines got fucking made up last night
-
That miss by Carlos will live long in the memory and the fact that Ollie was right behind him for a tap in makes it worse. Also Bailey not letting onside Diaby have the ball was another let off for them. That could of easily ended up 5-3 to the good guys. The last two games at Villa Park have been wonderfully bonkers and entertaining. We've seen 12 goals and the atmosphere has been fittingly fantastic. We are fucking box office under Unai Emery. Brilliant.
-

He gave 8 yellows against them in that match. One was upgraded to red on VAR review, and two were for Jota. Liverpool conceded 17 fouls that day, 15 yesterday.
-
Reflecting back , what a mad game .
-
On a mindless scroll through social media, Liverpool fans weren't happy with the ref either so I guess that's football for you

You mean he wasn't biased enough towards them? The only more favourable thing he could have done was pull his shirt off to reveal a giant Shankley tattoo on his chest and lead a chorus of YNWA.

We cant know that. The idea that Gascogine would have been a hall of famer is speculation, he star shone brightly for such a short time.

My best friend growing up was a Liverpool fan and I can attest to his ‘sticking with them through all the bad times’… except of course when he switched to being a Villa fan when it looked like we were going to win the league.
-
I don't mind the Scouse Liverpool fans, but can you remember all the local ones patting themselves on the back when they won the league, the fortitude they had shown when they had stuck with them rather than transferring their affections over to Chelsea, ManCity, Real Madrid, New York Cosmos etc. '20 years of hurt'. Your heart bled didn't it. They shouldn't be dignified with banter, or any kind of response. They don't deserve the steam off our piss.
-
Even conceding so early , even and 3-1 could just tell in that game how we were to get something and deservedly so.
Thought it was thrilling by the boys!
Yes Emery inch by inch!
Up The Villa!
-
For anyone facing Liverpool fans "you wuzz lucky" jibes, the expected goals number sums the game up. We recorded our highest all season which was more than double theirs on the night. add to that the fact that Elliott and / or MacAllister could have been red carded (or double-yellowed) and it's a slam-dunk.

Your heart bled didn't it. They shouldn't be dignified with banter, or any kind of response. They don't deserve the steam off our piss.
Very good assessment. Glory hunting bellends.

An actual BBC report of the match this morning describes our third goal as a Moussa Diaby shot, deflected in off Jhon Duran.
Fucking idiots.
Duran physically lifted his knee/thigh higher to direct the ball on target.
Its as clear as day on the replays...
I was watching in the pub and I joked at the time "he meant that" Watching the replay today and I actually think he did. It's hard to tell what Diaby actually meant to do but I don't care. It worked.
Oh, Diaby overhit his pass, lol.
But Duran knew what he was doing with an awkward ball. 100%.
-
In real time from the Lower Holte I thought Duran had handled it.

Surely there must be a little bit of a person from Birmingham who feels like a complete fraud enjoying a team from Liverpool or Manchester winning. I think we could have an off season truce with SHA and get together to tar and feather them all before shaking hands and resuming our entirely healthy enmity.

Can’t speak for them, but I’m not a Brummie (although my grandfather was from Aston, hence my support) and I can assure you my stress levels were not diminished from not residing in the area! In my case, having supported Villa my entire football sentient life (33 years or so) it certainly means plenty to me.

Most of them "have a soft spot" for Small Heath.
-
I asked a Liverpool fan from Tamworth how he felt about Everton. He said they didn’t bother him, he hated Villa more.
-
Putting lack of glory to hunt to one side mate, that's an entirely different thing to Jason from Pelsall who supports Liverpool because his uncle Trevor had a pair of red flares.

Yeah, and my biggest pet peeve, and I know plenty of people who do this, are those who choose a side and then change when another becomes more successful. What an utterly vacuous existence that must be.

No disrespect intended, we need to appeal to people outside Brum and respect them. I used to live in the Lake District and as there were no local teams they chose a NW or NE team depending where they were in the county. I was fine with that and their big passion for their non home club. But as a proud Brummie I view Manchester and Liverpool as cities whose achievements I simply cannot celebrate.
-
Yeah no offence taken, it was more general venting.
-
Even conceding so early , even and 3-1 could just tell in that game how we were to get something and deservedly so.
Thought it was thrilling by the boys!
Yes Emery inch by inch!
Up The Villa!
Is that 'insight' or hindsight?
-
And I do think just picking a team that’s winning isn’t a great reflection of character. How do you enjoy success if you haven’t experienced hardship? That said, a few trophies for Villa would be nice!
-
It always makes me shake my head when I see a post along the lines "only true fans remember these days" and it will be a one off weak line up for someone like Man U with the Dejmba twins and Chadwick in it, in a season they at the least qualified for the CL.
I can only imagine how empty it must all feel to glory hunt.
-
First thing I heard as I came into work today- "you were bloody lucky." This from a Liverpool fan. Just fuck right off. Sick to death this season of hearing how "lucky" we've been.
Most Redscouse fans I spoke to pre game wanted us to win. Nothing game for them.

Yep and he also got a line in congratulating us in the commentary.

I have more time for the match going SHA lot. As small as that number is.

I know some people didn’t like it, but as a card carrying republican I did think the rendition of ‘God Save The King’ was funny.
-
I thought Gakpo was at least a metre offside for their second - presumably I missed something?
Mixed emotions. Feels like a point salvaged but we could have won it at the death with Diaby. But the big one was Carlos in first half - Jesus wept. Hats off to every single one of them for dragging that performance out of tired bodies and for keeping going at 1-3 with five minutes left.
It was similar to the Real onside the other week. He could have stood there all match and not been called offside if the the ball went no where near him. But when the ball finally came he was behind it and being played on by Konsa / Carlos as well. No defender dropped back to mark him.
Thanks for that, Som.
These comments are made without watching again and have no sour grapes as we’ve just guaranteed 4th spot😊 But the stupid thing is he was in that position to score because he gained an advantage by being offside. I don’t understand the logic behind offside any more and it is a law they keep tinkering with in a strange way . Rumours that next season will bring new changes too and thus more confusion for us fans.

Either Gary doesn't like Liverpool or Carra, or he has won a substantial wager.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere.

But also noticeable for Douggie's reaction, and then the 4th official warning Mister before the Roadie goes to have a word with the same official.
