Title: Brighton and Hove Albion vs Aston Villa Pre-Match
Post by: Bad English on May 03, 2024, 09:01:07 AM
Sunday 5th May in Falmer at 2pm
This is a might like to win game that could allow us the liberty to do a "remontada" in Athens. Champions League we might be having a laugh but we'll never know until we qualify.
1-3 FTCSF!

My first of (hopefully after last night) 2 away games this season. I will be spending pre match strolling up and down the front eating ice cream and wearing a Kiss Me Quick Hat.

As for the game........

It has to be full strength, Pau will be back I would expect and I pray to the Lord that Emi is fit. If not I'd give the other bloke a go, but I know the Manager won't. If Tielemans is fit I'd rest Doug, but I don't think the Manager will do that either.

The result is more important than the performance and we'll sneak it if we are full strength. If not, we may draw.

0-1

Send the U21s down there and leave Unai and the first team back at Bodymoor concentrating on Thursday.
I realise that might scupper our Birmingham Senior Cup chances and delay the open top bus tour for finishing 4th but we have to concentrate 100% on the European tournament we’re still just about in.

Looking forward to this game. Long drive, but hopefully a good atmosphere with a chance to get closer to securing top-four.

Emi on one leg. Emi on no legs, even. And Pau back (I think I read that he's been playing through a slight injury, which is why he didn't play last night) should also make a big difference.

The major problem is the midfield. I don't know what to do about not only Doug, but also the problems he and McGinn have playing together. It was just a gaping hole last night, and against Chelsea they seemed to have no idea how to play through the lines - their most important job in an Emery team. Lenglet in midfield? Playing the two of them plus Tim to jam the centre up a bit?

I really don't know. But I do think that, on current form, we can't play our loosest midfield two with Rogers, Bailey AND Diaby. Even playing well the three of them are risk-takers, and it gives our midfield play a skitty, seat-of-the-trousers feel. We're going to need our control back somehow.

Well there's a good history down at Brighton and 3pts would be a really good way to pressure Spurs and virtually consolidate our Champions League position.
It's amazing what the team have achieved this season really.

Brighton have failed to win any of their last 6 matches in the league
And  Villa have scored 2 or more goals in 7 of past 10 away matches. I think have looked very good away from home in recent games and backing Villa to win!

Couple of changes for rest and rotation
Olsen or Gaucci could feature?
Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, Digne,
Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Iroegbunam,
Diaby, Rogers
Duran , Watkins.

Having won 6-1 at Villa park I think it will be a strong showing again
3-1 win!
Watkins X2 and Duran.

They sell their best players at the start (and sometimes on the middle) of the season so are continuously rebuilding, and this year the few quality players they have left have either been injured or in poor form..... so lets blame the manager?

I suppose it might be that like Emery, Di Zerbi persists with the tested style of play when they don't have the players to do it I suppose.

Quite clear we need changes here. If he goes in with same 11 knackered players we are probably gonna lose.

Id save pau for Thursday.  Carlos and lenglet at cb with konsa at rb.

Id start timmy in place of luiz too. Also have zaniolo for bailey who needs a breather

Big game.  Another one (as a certain left back might say!).  I cannot believe anybody is suggesting we rest players for this game.  It really boggles my brain!  Even if we weren't already 2 goals down in the other massive game we have in the next week, it'd be madness to not play the absolute strongest team v Brighton that we possibly can.
Title: Re: Brighton and Hove Albion vs Aston Villa Pre-Match
Post by: Monty on May 03, 2024, 03:38:06 PM
There's just a small part of me that wonders if the solution is a back three of Konsa, Torres and Lenglet, Youri (or Tim if he's not fit) and Doug in midfield with McGinn as one of the more advanced players, just to give Torres more freedom to push forward a bit and join the midfield, give everyone in there more options around them, give us a bit more bite up the pitch with McGinn...

Disadvantages here are many. First, 3/5 man defences can, as we saw against Spurs, have the effect of pinning yourself back (though so did whatever we were doing against Chelsea). Second, existence of Lenglet. Third, we might have that problem where we beat the press and lack runners to actually do any, you know, attacking (though both Youri and Doug have got forward a fair bit in that way).

I'm just racking my brains for a way in which we can get some control back in our midfield though. McGinn and Luiz have looked not so much like a sieve as just a big fucking hole in the middle of the pitch. Even when we do get the ball a bit up the pitch, we look like we're just sprinting at the box in a kind of frantic hope. We need to find a new way to do it - even if the above idea might just be absolutely terrible.

We go 4-3-3

Defence stays the same..

Cash Konsa Torres and Digne

McGinn Iroegbunam Luiz as the 3.

And then only play 3 forward thinking players instead of 4. Which means we play Watkins, Bailey and one of Diaby, Rogers or Zaniolo.

McGinn and Luiz like to play a bit further forward anyway and Iroegbunam is the direct Kamara replacement. I think that may be weaker than Kamara, but it allows the others to play their natural game more and gives a better base to play from.

Emery on Brighton:
" The respect for them is high. Roberto De Zerbi is an amazing coach, he was playing very good with very good results last year. This year, they've changed a lot of players and it's normal. They need time to get again the same performances like last year and to be successful in their style.

It's amazing how they were playing, how they are trying to play. The results are not the same, but I appreciate them a lot. I appreciate De Zerbi; I appreciate how they were playing; I appreciate their style. It's always very difficult. We played against them in different matches last year and this year as well, and on Sunday it's going to be very difficult."

Brighton are due a performance which is a cause for concern . They've been crap for weeks .

So because they haven't put in a good performance for weeks, they are due a good performance?

I think it’s more likely they’re checked out and suffering from key injuries to key players as well. Hopefully Unai keeps up his record over De Zerbi.

Not sure about your mathematics skills Footy, but with a goalkeeper that makes 12 players starting?

My mistake. I'll revise this and also now include Zaniolo.
Moreno too perhaps

Olson/Gaucci
Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, Moreno
McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Iroegbunam, Zaniolo
Duran , Watkins.

I thought Zaniolo did quite well when he came on last night, so would potentially start him on Sunday.

Ooh, I do love this fixture. Sorry if I've bored you with some of these stats in the past. We're their our manyoo.
They've only ever beaten us twice in the top division.
The first was in our last title-winning season, the second and last being the 2-1 win during the pandemic season.
That last one was also the only time in all of our 27 league meetings that they've managed to score more than 1 goal.

They might as well not bother showing up.

I'm confident about this one. We tend not to mope too long after a defeat and we've got a decent record against them. 1-3. Ollie to get a couple to take him over the 20 mark and another one for Rogers. Tony Grealish for them.

So if he's going to get to 20+, this could be the game to get them.

Ah, great. It should be some show. I saw him there in 2013, got there right up front, so shook his hand. It's a terrific venue with the roof closed especially, which I think they may be planning tomorrow. Let us know how it goes, on the Bruce thread we have.

Really looking forward to it.

Saw him a couple of times Dublin last year and Villa Park 1988. Hopefully tomorrow with a victory over Brighton and Spurs losing at Anfield we will be seeing the Champions league in reality as well as in our dreams.

The other thing is, if we get this, its a massive achievement for Unai and the team, huge. Its huge financially, for the glamour of it all, for keeping our best players. My 14 year old is buzzing at the thought of it, he’ll be bouncing if spurs lose and we win at Brighton.

However, i feel so deflated after Thursday, still, that Ive realised the most important thing to me personally is to win something.

I keep reminding myself and you’re right. Its just i was 22 when we last won something and i turned 50 this year….anyway…

We play before Spurs tomorrow, if we can just get that win, the pressure is huge on them and i think after 3 losses on the bounce they may fold. If we can put it to bed tomorrow its a huge achievement and massive boost for Thursday

Yeah he just let 6 goals in plus 2 disallowed goals in a game and a half. The bloke is a liability poor goalie and poor with the ball at his feet and gives the whole backline the jitters . Hopefully he doesn't play for us again .

I thought at the game that Olsen was monumentally shit for Olympiakos's 4th but I hadn't seen it replayed back and as I keep reading in here that he hadn't done anything wrong then I just presumed that he was maybe unlucky.

We have an incredibly recent record v Brighton and they just want the season to end now and regroup in the summer.

I also am pretty sure that Spurs will lose v Liverpool and Man. City so whisper it quietly but we probably don't even need another point to make 4th now.

It all swung on that Arsenal weekend. Spurs played before us and they had the chance to be three points clear with a game in hand but completely imploded v Newcastle and we have seized the initiative since so in my mind 4th is a matter of when not if.

Different story on Thursday though. Will be disappointing to have got this far in Europa and not make the final and you sense there's still a few more twists to come in that game so will be nerve jangling for sure like Lille.

Looks like Martinez is playing from his Instagram. Would be a huge bonus.

I was in the camp where I thought it was unfair to scapegoat Olsen, but after Brentford and Thursday, I've lost all patience.

He might not be totally at fault, but part of the goalkeeper's job is to instill confidence in his defence. He does the opposite! Also, Emi gets to two of Olympiacos' goals - The one which went under him, and the deflection. Not good enough - I would ABSOLUTELY play Gauci over Olsen today if Emi isn't ready.

A Cocky Aussie vs a Timid Swede. No contest.

Difficult to tell, could just be a scheduled post that goes out before every game.

If he was posting a shot from the team hotel this morning that would suggest 100% he's playing otherwise he wouldn't have travelled.
