Sunday 5th May in Falmer at 2pm
This is a might like to win game that could allow us the liberty to do a "remontada" in Athens. Champions League we might be having a laugh but we'll never know until we qualify.
1-3 FTCSF!

A Bank Holiday weekend in Brighton, can’t wait.
I've just been down to pay my suit off, handsome, 3 buttons, side vents…..
-
My first of (hopefully after last night) 2 away games this season. I will be spending pre match strolling up and down the front eating ice cream and wearing a Kiss Me Quick Hat.
As for the game........
It has to be full strength, Pau will be back I would expect and I pray to the Lord that Emi is fit. If not I'd give the other bloke a go, but I know the Manager won't. If Tielemans is fit I'd rest Doug, but I don't think the Manager will do that either.
The result is more important than the performance and we'll sneak it if we are full strength. If not, we may draw.
0-1
-
Send the U21s down there and leave Unai and the first team back at Bodymoor concentrating on Thursday.
I realise that might scupper our Birmingham Senior Cup chances and delay the open top bus tour for finishing 4th but we have to concentrate 100% on the European tournament we’re still just about in.
-
Looking forward to this game. Long drive, but hopefully a good atmosphere with a chance to get closer to securing top-four.
-
Emi on one leg. Emi on no legs, even. And Pau back (I think I read that he's been playing through a slight injury, which is why he didn't play last night) should also make a big difference.
The major problem is the midfield. I don't know what to do about not only Doug, but also the problems he and McGinn have playing together. It was just a gaping hole last night, and against Chelsea they seemed to have no idea how to play through the lines - their most important job in an Emery team. Lenglet in midfield? Playing the two of them plus Tim to jam the centre up a bit?
I really don't know. But I do think that, on current form, we can't play our loosest midfield two with Rogers, Bailey AND Diaby. Even playing well the three of them are risk-takers, and it gives our midfield play a skitty, seat-of-the-trousers feel. We're going to need our control back somehow.
-
2-0
-
A nice 2-1 win.

Nice. If you need to pick a tie to go with it, Simon Page is yer man.

Well there's a good history down at Brighton and 3pts would be a really good way to pressure Spurs and virtually consolidate our Champions League position.
It's amazing what the team have achieved this season really.
Brighton have failed to win any of their last 6 matches in the league
And Villa have scored 2 or more goals in 7 of past 10 away matches. I think have looked very good away from home in recent games and backing Villa to win!
Couple of changes for rest and rotation
Olsen or Gaucci could feature?
Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, Digne,
Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Iroegbunam,
Diaby, Rogers
Duran , Watkins.
Having won 6-1 at Villa park I think it will be a strong showing again
3-1 win!
Watkins X2 and Duran.

Great intro to start discussion!
Enjoy your bank holiday!
Up the Villa

Going for a 1-1 draw. Think Liverpool will beat Spurs which will leave us tantalisingly close, and it will be clinched at home to Liverpool.

Cash
Konsa

McGinn

Tielemans

Brighton fans - online at least - are getting quite critical of their manager, several reckon they won't get another point all season. Now with Villa in town let's not be the ones handing out the usual presents please. 2-1 Villa.

There is a whiff of Quadrophenia about this weekend .

They sell their best players at the start (and sometimes on the middle) of the season so are continuously rebuilding, and this year the few quality players they have left have either been injured or in poor form..... so lets blame the manager?
I suppose it might be that like Emery, Di Zerbi persists with the tested style of play when they don't have the players to do it I suppose.
-
Quite clear we need changes here. If he goes in with same 11 knackered players we are probably gonna lose.
Id save pau for Thursday. Carlos and lenglet at cb with konsa at rb.
Id start timmy in place of luiz too. Also have zaniolo for bailey who needs a breather
-
I wish they still played at the Goldstone, I'd be a stone's throw away.
-
Going for a 1-1 draw. Think Liverpool will beat Spurs which will leave us tantalisingly close, and it will be clinched at home to Liverpool.
Liverpool will have a field day with our defence.

It depends which one turns up. The one that played at Arsenal was quite good.

Hopefully Martinez and Tielemans are fit, in which case:
Martinez
Cash Konsa Torres Digne
McGinn Tielemans Iroegbunam Rogers
Bailey Watkins

We really need to beat Brighton I'm confident we will win 2-1.

We will win. Spurs will lose. CL football secured. On to the Karaiskakis Stadium.

I’ll be in London on Sunday. Can anyone recommend a decent pub / bar to watch this in please?
-
A draw for us and a draw for Spurs.
-
Liverpool win, we lose.
Champions league will have to wait.
Unai plays some of the second string against Olympiakos, we lose on penalties. Yes, I am feeling somewhat negative today

I've not been more nervous about a game this season and it's not even like a win is imperative. 2-1 to us.

If you have the nerve to travel south of the river to the real London, I think a lot of Villa fans watch games at a bar called Feed the Yak in Elephant and Castle. Careful you don’t get mugged by hipsters, flipsters and finger-popping daddios

Oh, I didn't realise it was on Sky. It wasn't initially selected...

2-1 I think. Lot of players will have something to prove after Thurs. I just hope Brighton don't decide to have their best game in weeks...

I’ve watched villa in there. It’s fine, if a little cramped. Made out of shipping containers I think. But totally Villa!

Big game. Another one (as a certain left back might say!). I cannot believe anybody is suggesting we rest players for this game. It really boggles my brain! Even if we weren't already 2 goals down in the other massive game we have in the next week, it'd be madness to not play the absolute strongest team v Brighton that we possibly can.
-
There's just a small part of me that wonders if the solution is a back three of Konsa, Torres and Lenglet, Youri (or Tim if he's not fit) and Doug in midfield with McGinn as one of the more advanced players, just to give Torres more freedom to push forward a bit and join the midfield, give everyone in there more options around them, give us a bit more bite up the pitch with McGinn...
Disadvantages here are many. First, 3/5 man defences can, as we saw against Spurs, have the effect of pinning yourself back (though so did whatever we were doing against Chelsea). Second, existence of Lenglet. Third, we might have that problem where we beat the press and lack runners to actually do any, you know, attacking (though both Youri and Doug have got forward a fair bit in that way).
I'm just racking my brains for a way in which we can get some control back in our midfield though. McGinn and Luiz have looked not so much like a sieve as just a big fucking hole in the middle of the pitch. Even when we do get the ball a bit up the pitch, we look like we're just sprinting at the box in a kind of frantic hope. We need to find a new way to do it - even if the above idea might just be absolutely terrible.
-
We go 4-3-3
Defence stays the same..
Cash Konsa Torres and Digne
McGinn Iroegbunam Luiz as the 3.
And then only play 3 forward thinking players instead of 4. Which means we play Watkins, Bailey and one of Diaby, Rogers or Zaniolo.
McGinn and Luiz like to play a bit further forward anyway and Iroegbunam is the direct Kamara replacement. I think that may be weaker than Kamara, but it allows the others to play their natural game more and gives a better base to play from.

Roberto De Zerbi is leaving after having his head turned and has his next job lined up it's clear maybe not obvious where though. I do wonder if it will be Man Utd or Chelsea or it will be to another league- likely series A
Richard Keys said Thomas Frank is taking over at Brighton.

It was something my brother (a Maths teacher and Options-trading wizard) once said when I asked him to calculate a restaurant bill split as, ho-ho, he was the Maths teacher. :-)

Not even going to attempt to second guess the lineup - NOT a clue! In Unai we trust.
Bit of a banana skin, but I have every confidence that we'll win, cement 4th, and then turn our attention to getting an extra trip to Athens at the end of the month! UTV

Emery on Brighton:
" The respect for them is high. Roberto De Zerbi is an amazing coach, he was playing very good with very good results last year. This year, they've changed a lot of players and it's normal. They need time to get again the same performances like last year and to be successful in their style.
It's amazing how they were playing, how they are trying to play. The results are not the same, but I appreciate them a lot. I appreciate De Zerbi; I appreciate how they were playing; I appreciate their style. It's always very difficult. We played against them in different matches last year and this year as well, and on Sunday it's going to be very difficult."

I think it’s more likely they’re checked out and suffering from key injuries to key players as well. Hopefully Unai keeps up his record over De Zerbi.

Ooh, I do love this fixture. Sorry if I've bored you with some of these stats in the past. We're their our manyoo.
They've only ever beaten us twice in the top division.
The first was in our last title-winning season, the second and last being the 2-1 win during the pandemic season.
That last one was also the only time in all of our 27 league meetings that they've managed to score more than 1 goal.
They might as well not bother showing up.
-
Famous last words...
Hope you're right though, I have to live amongst them.

Maybe it's my confirmation bias with this guy, but he does seem more impactful as a substitute rather than a starter

He started against Arsenal and did well, but I think you're mostly right.

He looked sharp, which really stood out the other night as sharpness seemed in total absence elsewhere.

------- Martinez --------
Cash Konsa Torres Digne

I'm confident about this one. We tend not to mope too long after a defeat and we've got a decent record against them. 1-3. Ollie to get a couple to take him over the 20 mark and another one for Rogers. Tony Grealish for them.

Ollie has scored 6 goals against Brighton. More than he has against any other side in the League.
So if he's going to get to 20+, this could be the game to get them.

Ah, great. It should be some show. I saw him there in 2013, got there right up front, so shook his hand. It's a terrific venue with the roof closed especially, which I think they may be planning tomorrow. Let us know how it goes, on the Bruce thread we have.

Really looking forward to it.
Saw him a couple of times Dublin last year and Villa Park 1988. Hopefully tomorrow with a victory over Brighton and Spurs losing at Anfield we will be seeing the Champions league in reality as well as in our dreams.

I couldn't be more nervous about this game. It's like a cup final but only bad somehow.
-
Nice musical interlude. Biggest game of the season? For me, this then the second leg now feel fairly season defining. 2 wins and we are in dream land. Who predicted champions league at the start of this season? I think I said 60 points would be amazing and we look capable of 70+ now. Thursday was heart wrenching let's get on the front foot and seal CL qualification! UTV
-

If you find highlights of the Bournemouth vs Brighton game last week, that should help ease your suffering. Because if that same Brighton team shows up, we will win by a bakers dozen.
-
Really important game, strongest team possible.
The other thing is, if we get this, its a massive achievement for Unai and the team, huge. Its huge financially, for the glamour of it all, for keeping our best players. My 14 year old is buzzing at the thought of it, he’ll be bouncing if spurs lose and we win at Brighton.
However, i feel so deflated after Thursday, still, that Ive realised the most important thing to me personally is to win something.
-
Praying Martinez is back .
-
Nothing seems right this week, apart from Brighton. I mean Brighton will be OK.
Brighton will be a laugh. That's why we are going down, it will be a giggle.
Yeah, right! And Olympiacos, was that just a giggle to you?
What do you think? All right, so I fancied us. They had it off with us. But that don't mean nothin', does it?
It did to fuckin' me!

Let’s get this done and get 4th

Save emi for 2nd leg. Give gauci a debut
If olsen players we need to score 3 to win
-
Save him from what? If he's fit, he plays.
-
Emery has said PL is the priority. Tomorrow is a massive game. It could secure the 4th spot if things work out at Anfield. We play our best side tomorrow and then go 100% into Thursday. No fucking about these next two games.

Brighton tomorra

Make it next three games. Bingo deserves a special Villa Park send off, something along the lines we gave Alan Shearer.
-
Brighton have been awful recently and have absolutely nothing to play for. Couldn't really wish for a better situation. Make sure of the 3 points.

I felt the same after Thursday as well and I'm desperate for us to win something again after 28 fcuking years too. Remember that it's only "half-time" in the tie.
-
Come on Villa let's get this done.
No help from anyone else 70 points is a terrific season and deserving of champions league
-
Hopefully Emi is at least 80/90 per cent fit. Don't need him carrying a knock and breaking down at this point of the season. Obv if Crisp Hands plays we'll need two > possibly three goals to get a point. But we're well capable of that.
2-2.

Any side with the *Albion moniker who play in blue and white stripes must be utterly shit.
4-0 Villa.

If Martinez isn't available please play Gauci or Walker . Cannot take another Olsen performance.

I felt the same after Thursday as well and I'm desperate for us to win something again after 28 fcuking years too. Remember that it's only "half-time" in the tie.
I keep reminding myself and you’re right. Its just i was 22 when we last won something and i turned 50 this year….anyway…
We play before Spurs tomorrow, if we can just get that win, the pressure is huge on them and i think after 3 losses on the bounce they may fold. If we can put it to bed tomorrow its a huge achievement and massive boost for Thursday

you cant blame Olsen, he did nothing wrong last 2 games. The midfield cost us both games not Olsen. Find another scapegoat🙄

Brighton have been awful recently and have absolutely nothing to play for. Couldn't really wish for a better situation. Make sure of the 3 points.
They have but they still have well-drilled footballers who have managed highly-impressive results before, their slump will end at some point. I think we'll toil to a draw which will still leave us on edge.

Yeah he just let 6 goals in plus 2 disallowed goals in a game and a half. The bloke is a liability poor goalie and poor with the ball at his feet and gives the whole backline the jitters . Hopefully he doesn't play for us again .
-
He was part of the problem, rather than “the” problem. But he isn’t good enough, we need Emi back.

You can’t argue with an obsession Mal.

You do realise there is absolutely no chance Emery is going to stick our third choice keeper in the team at this point in the season, don’t you?
-
To be fair Tim normally has about 3 players in his crosshairs at any one time. At least with Olsen we can all agree we’d rather he wasn’t in the side.

Good god Tim, you’ve literally been banging that same drum on here all day. I’m not saying I completely disagree with you but don’t you get bored just repeating pretty much the same message over and over and in different threads? I think we get it !

I thought at the game that Olsen was monumentally shit for Olympiakos's 4th but I hadn't seen it replayed back and as I keep reading in here that he hadn't done anything wrong then I just presumed that he was maybe unlucky.
After finally seeing it back though, what the fuck are you lot watching? He was as monumentally shit as I originally thought.

Just fucking win

This. He was dreadful.
As he pretty much always is.

Just having a "toby" to the station en route to the game through Khan's London. Haven't been attacked or stabbed so far.

I don’t think Martinez will play

What you heard?

Olsen may not be shit, but we always concede a shit load of goals when he plays. Time to try the aussie new bozzie
-
Nothing , just being my usual pessimistic self

A guy on r/AVFC on Reddit apparently has 2 spare for today if anyone is interested. Might be worth paying for one and getting them to send you one before paying for the second.

Just been in the hotel lift with Robin Olsen! He was very focused/nervous; not sure which. Wasn't brave enough to ask if Emi was starting.

Did he get out at the wrong floor?

In his most recent column Max Rushden quoted an Arsenal fan saying 'this season's been great fun, apart from the matches.' Today is probably the most true that statement has been for me all year.

Quickest hes got down to the ground this season.

Holding in a fart. Happens to all of us.

I hadn't even considered the possibility that Olsen might start, and now..jag skiter på mig själv.

He’s probably still in it, he hates coming out of his box.

Happy Champions League qualification day everyone!
UTV 💪🏼

There is a pic doing the rounds on socials of Emi chilling with family and whoever has posted it has captioned it 'Sunday'. Most are taking that to mean he hasn't made the trip.
-
Didn't Martinez himself say he was hoping to be back for the trip to Piraeus? I took that as meaning he'd not be fit for today, anyway.
-
If Martinez plays we win, if Olsen plays we pray.
DeZerbi is heading for exit and the players are in wind down mode so we should we win if we play like we did v Bournemouth

Has Emi even travelled?
I think today's team will be as close to the Arsenal selection as possible. Starts for all of Carlos, Pau and Zaniolo so should be enough fresh legs and think Bailey and Cash will be rested for the second leg.

I'm actually very relaxed for today.
We have an incredibly recent record v Brighton and they just want the season to end now and regroup in the summer.
I also am pretty sure that Spurs will lose v Liverpool and Man. City so whisper it quietly but we probably don't even need another point to make 4th now.
It all swung on that Arsenal weekend. Spurs played before us and they had the chance to be three points clear with a game in hand but completely imploded v Newcastle and we have seized the initiative since so in my mind 4th is a matter of when not if.
Different story on Thursday though. Will be disappointing to have got this far in Europa and not make the final and you sense there's still a few more twists to come in that game so will be nerve jangling for sure like Lille.

Looks like Martinez is playing from his Instagram. Would be a huge bonus.
-
I was in the camp where I thought it was unfair to scapegoat Olsen, but after Brentford and Thursday, I've lost all patience.
He might not be totally at fault, but part of the goalkeeper's job is to instill confidence in his defence. He does the opposite! Also, Emi gets to two of Olympiacos' goals - The one which went under him, and the deflection. Not good enough - I would ABSOLUTELY play Gauci over Olsen today if Emi isn't ready.
A Cocky Aussie vs a Timid Swede. No contest.

Difficult to tell, could just be a scheduled post that goes out before every game.
If he was posting a shot from the team hotel this morning that would suggest 100% he's playing otherwise he wouldn't have travelled.

Ffs olsen again.
No clean sheet thats for sure
