Back to Europe on Thursday with a 2-1 lead heading back to France to play a very good Lille side we somewhat fortuitously beat last week at Villa Park. Our win yesterday hopefully gives us tremendous confidence to see the job through and secure a place in the SF. Lille haven’t played since our game against them so they will be fresh and prepared.
I’ll go for a 1-1 draw and moving on to the next round for our boys.
-
I think we're about to go on another of those runs and be really dominant. Two nil villa, the boys will be absolutely pumped after yesterday

I hope so. Winning the cup in Europe and finishing 4th would be magnificent.
-
I wont lie im abit nervous about this one. They will feel confident about their chances. I dont think we played particularly well - nowhere near the levels of yesterday. If we did we would have blown them away.
This really does depend what villa turn up. You would think confidence would be high after yesterday. I would get cash in at rb and konsa -pau cb
-
Match the level of discipline from yesterday please.
-

If we’re honest that scenario would have been beyond our wildest dreams at the start of the season,
Along with outplaying and beating Man City and deservedly doing the double over Arsenal.

-
Like the first leg, I can't see a big score for us (and hopefully not for them either). There is a decision for the Manager to make in terms of Doug being available for this one but it's a nice position for us to be in for a change.
Cash and Lenglett offer options as well and I can see the former coming in and maybe Carlos out, he did seem struggle last week however well be played yesterday.
It will be tight, nervy, we'll be shouting at the ref, willing the clock down but eventually delighted to go through.
0-0
-
1-2. It won't be a doddle but we're better than them.

If that were to happen im content as a villa fan forever. Anything more is a bonus.
-
They were quite confident after the first leg, but looking at their forums, our shoeing of the Tarquins has given them pause. And rightly so.
It's going to be tasty, I reckon. Goals at either end.
-
They had a free weekend and are a neat team, who move the ball quickly and could pose us problems if we play with a high line however it is some stretch to think that they can defeat a team set up by Unai that's a goal in the lead. Draw for me.
-
Match the level of discipline from yesterday please.
And not spend too much time being smug about that win. Anything less than than 100% focus and effort and we will get smacked.
-
I think this will be a 1-1 draw.
-
Coming away last Thursday I was not very confident about going through, thought Lille were the better side on the night even though we won and thought we might crumble under the pressure at their place
However since our win against Arsenal our confidence is back
It was a cracking result, but the confidence that comes from a performance like that can do wonders for you at the stage of the season, i’d rather have that than a rest to be honest
So I’m back in positive territory again although I think it will be tight and difficult We have the master in charge
-
2-1 us (Watkins, Dougie-penalty)
-
My prediction for our initial five penalty takers in the shoot out for only the 2nd Euro semi final in our history would be Luiz, Watkins, Tielemans, Cash, and Torres.
I'm sure they will all be practising.

I wouldnt let Cash anywhere near it, i think it might be wild and high, Waddlesque, I’d go with what you said but have McGinn instead of Cash
-
Emi Martinez would roll it down the centre and it would barely cross the line. He would turn away and celebrate before it had got half way to the goal.
-
3-1 villa win. They will leave holes as they push forward .
-
Diego and Zaniolo were superb yesterday, but have been pretty poor hitherto.
Gives Unai an interesting dilemma with Cash likely to be fully fit and available along with Dougie.
-
I wasn't that optimistic at full time last Thursday but after yesterday? We'll FTF!
-
I think this will be a 1-1 draw.
Massive, massive game as we strive to match the achievements of the '96 team. Also think it'll be a draw to see us through.
-
I'd not be surprised to see a performance similar to yesterday's. We're starting from a goal up, we'll be more prepared to soak it up in the first half (hopefully in possession rather than out of), and then dictate the second half. If we do score early I think we'll then get another, and all of a sudden they're needing three. 2-1 Villa on the night.
-
Maybe edit the opening post to remind folk of the early kick-off time, (5.45pm).
-
They wont want pens not with the king in goal they will shit themselves so they will go for it and they will leave lots of spaces for us to hit them. 1 -2 watkins zaniolo winner

There will be none of that nonsense.
-
2-0
-
Just be consistent Villa. If we are anywhere near our best, we should have too much for Lille.
-

But for TV it is 12:45pm

2-0
That's what you said for the Arsenal game...
-
Hoping legion prediction comes true again 🙏
-
Hard game but a 2-1 win. Villa set the standards for themselves on Sunday, if I was Uni, I'd be demanding that they don't drop between now and end of May...
-
It’s got to come from the players. Sunday will have hopefully given them the belief they can stay unbeaten until the end of the season.
-
I wasn't that optimistic at full time last Thursday but after yesterday? We'll FTF!
My thoughts precisely
-
Lille haven't played a game since facing us, so hoping they are tired (more than well-rested).
-

Yes however I hope the reaction isn't similar to When we beat city and arsenal in 3 days and followed it up with a poor run of results.
-

They've been shaking like shitting puppies since watching our game on Sunday.
-
Depends how much Sunday took out of us
We played with a degree of control not seen for the last few months, so it's not as if we should be completely knackered.
But Lille are a good side; well capable of getting an early goal or two (partic on their own patch) and taking the game away from us. In that scenario, do we go all in and chase? Prob not, with what we have coming up.
-
Of course we do. It's a trophy.

They have no choice but to attack us. They will leave themselves vulnerable
-
They have no choice but to attack us. They will leave themselves vulnerable
That's what I'm thinking. They were happy to sit in at VP, they have to come at us on Thursday, should leave gaps.
-
Just hope if we concede early we dont fall apart like often has been case this season
If we score early silence the crowd i think we go through
-
The more I think about our win at Arsenal, and the way we did it (and I've been thinking about it a lot), the more important I think it is for us to actually go and win this competition, and lay a firm foundation for an exciting few years. That said, the game is massive for Lille as well, and I'm sure this will be tough. 1-1, I reckon.
-
We need to put all our effort into winning this simply because it enhances the chance if 5th getting CL
I think we are not finishing below 5th now so we need to focus in winning this competition
-

Hopefully, an earlyish goal to settle our nerves would be nice though.

For me, it's the biggest game of the season. We need to win a trophy again.

Agree 100%. As good as the league has been, I'll feel very deflated if we got out on Thursday.
-
Totally agree.

No! We need to win because it's a trophy. Not because we want to help Spurs.

Thats the obvious reason but just as muxh thw need to gwt 5th a CL spot

Lille have advised anyone sitting in the home end not to wear colours, don’t act like a dickhead and no chanting. Seems pretty obvious but we’ve been warned!!
I’m presuming allez allez allez will be fine.

It is not actually Lille but an administrative order that has been issued by the Prefect of the Nord Département.
Here is the text that I have run through Google Translate (and sorry, I haven't got the time to edit to make it better )..The original page in French with a link to the decree is here : https://www.losc.fr/actualites/2024-04-16/arrete-prefectoral-avant-losc-aston-villa
Prefectural order before LOSC-Aston Villa
PREFECTORAL ORDER BEFORE LOSC-ASTON VILLA
LOSC informs spectators of the LOSC-Aston Villa FC meeting on Thursday April 18 (6:45 p.m.) that a prefectural decree has been issued by the Northern Prefecture concerning supporters of the Aston Villa club.
LOSC was informed by the Northern Prefecture of the following information:
“From Thursday April 18, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. to Friday April 19, 2024 at 2:00 a.m., it is prohibited for any person claiming to be a supporter of Aston Villa Football Club or behaving as such, without a ticket, counter-mark or any permit allowing you to attend the match, to go to the Stade Pierre Mauroy and to drive or park on public roads within the perimeter delimited by the following routes:
In Villeneuve d’Ascq: rue Verte, boulevard Van Gogh, boulevard du Breucq, rue de la Volonté, M146, avenue de l’Avenir, boulevard de Valmy”
It was also decided that:
“Supporters of the Aston Villa Football Club who take part in the bus trip organized by a travel agency or by the club, are required to comply with the travel arrangements and must in particular regroup in the C2 bus car park located on rue Paul Langevin in Villeneuve d'Ascq (59) in order to be picked up and transported to Gate I of the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in order to access the visitors area.
Aston Villa Football Club supporters wishing to use public transport are required to comply with the travel arrangements planned by the organizers by favoring metro line 1, yellow line (Gare Lille-Flandres - 4 Cantons route), then going to gate 1 of the Pierre Mauroy Stadium to access the visitors area.
Persons with a ticket, a voucher or any other document allowing them to attend the match cannot claim to be supporters of Aston Villa Football Club or behave as such outside of the sector reserved for them on the square (gate l sector) and in the visitors' area of the Stade Pierre Mauroy. »
Based on this decree, LOSC will exercise the right to prohibit access or invite to leave the enclosure any person who does not respect these measures.

The local press in the Lille area are rightly pointing out that Villa fans, and I paraphrase, are not like the ones that were seen in Belgium in the 80's and are not known for being troublemakers but are more likely to take over bars, drink beer and sing songs without causing hassle.
Which is nice. Don't fuck up in my country Villa fans! ;-)
-
The decree also states that failure to comply with its requirements carries a penalty of a fine up to €30,000 and up to 6 months imprisonment.

"Lille – Aston Villa: more than 2,600 English supporters under surveillance
They are no longer the Aston Villa supporters of the 1980s, some of whom were involved in acts of violence in Belgium or the Netherlands. English clubs and their fans returned to the European Cup in 1990 – Aston Villa were then involved in the UEFA Cup – five years after their exclusion following the Heysel tragedy, and a major clean-up was done in the country's stands now almost sanitized, without real ultras or large groups formed. Current fans of the “Villans” do not have the reputation of being dangerous, rather the type who hang out in bars drinking beers and singing, without picking a quarrel, before going, often quite late, to the stadium.
In July 2002, they arrived at 600 for a semi-final first leg of the Intertoto Cup (1-1 at Grimonprez-Jooris). More recently, they went to France for a preparation match in Rennes in the summer of 2023, gathering 1,300 people at Roazhon Park without any particular incidents. “They agitated the city center with passion but calmly,” observed Ouest-France at the time.
Vigilance on alcohol levels and ticketless people
This Thursday, there will be 2,621 (for UEFA the visitor parking, limited to 1,000 in Ligue 1, represents 5% of the commercial capacity of the stadium, here a little more for logistical reasons) for a match which will be played behind closed doors . In addition to blood alcohol levels, the Northern prefecture especially fears the arrival of people without tickets, who could number up to 1,000 according to various information.
It issued a supervisory decree, which above all lays the legal foundations in the event of intervention. It prohibits them from entering the stadium and its perimeter and also for everyone, classically, to claim their status as an Aston Villa supporter outside the parking area and the reserved area on the square, around Gate I, which will be protected by barriers. mobile and security forces. If there is no procession planned, however, it is difficult to imagine that the English supporters would remove any “claret and blue” reference (burgundy and blue, the colors of the club) and refrain from singing along the way...
Those who travel in an organized manner (two special charter flights in particular have been chartered) will not be escorted, unlike many championship matches; we will find them in town, in Lille, during the day. Many will come by Eurostar or by private car and will travel to Pierre-Mauroy on their own. The prefecture recommends metro line 1.
On the first leg, 1,300 Lille supporters attended the match (2-1), after setting the mood in the center of Birmingham, without incident. The return is classified as risk 2/5 by the DNLH, the national division for the fight against hooliganism. It remains sensitive and potentially at risk in an exacerbated international context.
Inside the stadium, LOSC has mobilized 800 security agents (a little less than 500 for a standard L1 match, a little more than 800 against Marseille) who will also ensure that opposing supporters who have purchased tickets general public tickets, excluding parking, (and identified by an address in Great Britain) are held to the ground. In the surrounding area, the police force is also large, with around 250 people, canine and equestrian brigades in support."
-
Has anyone else not yet received their ticket voucher? Even though they have completed the travel form?
-
I'd rather win this trophy than finish 4th.
Let's do both though!
If 5th isn't champions league I'd rather finish 4th than win this trophy, simply for the fact that champions league qualification will be a game changer for income / FFP whereas winning the conference won't be .
-
I would rather we actually win something for the first time since my plumbs dropped and before they drop off.
-
This debate seems to pop up every couple of weeks. I'd take a trophy and Europa League next season over no trophy, 4th and CL next year. I do understand the financial benefits of CL, but if it was actually a choice, one or the other, I'd take the trophy.
-

Got mine on Friday. Have you checked your spam folder?
-
In other news, I read that Edon Zhegrova is doubtful for Lille (ankle). Ideally he would be replaced by Adam Ounas. However, Ouna will not be picked because the Lille manager is not happy with his commitment in training.

Can see the argument from both sides but for me it's 4th and champions league .

Cheers BE. Interesting they refer to us as Burgundy and blue. When I lived in France my mates referred to our colours as Bordeaux + blue ciel, not Burgundy. The wine regions are fighting over us!

500ml Kronenbourg, 20 Gitanes , sit back and watch the world go by .

Diego and Zaniolo were superb yesterday, but have been pretty poor hitherto.
Gives Unai an interesting dilemma with Cash likely to be fully fit and available along with Dougie.
I'd bring Cash and Luiz back in. Konsa is in the main frankly rubbish at RB. Carlos will have to drop out. Rogers has been playing well but I'd go with Tielemans extra experience there and bring Luiz in next to McGinn. Bailey and Zaniolo out wide.
-

As long as we are demanding in our passionate but calm drinking, in our own way.

Cash and luiz for sure. Keep diabs on bench as he is still one booking away from a ban. Mcginn needs to be very careful cant afford him getting a ban for next round of we win.
Save carlos for weekend game and give konsa a rest on the bench

I think that could be the basis of a second verse of Allez, Allez. Might need the help of some poetically minded French speakers.

IN the debate of Champions League qualification versus winning the Conference League, it is worth noting that both routes give us 8 guaranteed games in Europe next year. The Europa is also moving to that Swiss system. I know the prize money is higher in the champions league but some of that is offset by the £5m for winning the Conference League. Plus, we'd have a better chance of progressing to the latter stages of the Europa next year.
For this reason, I am favouring trophy and 5th versus exit and 4th.

How much extra sponsorship income can we generate though if we make Champions League. Heck would have huge leverage then ?
-
Finishing 4th rather than 5th would now be disappointing. In terms of where it might take us in developing the team however, I don't think entering the Europa League next season rather than the CL would be that bad a thing, especially if we are going into the new season with the Conference trophy in the cabinet.

I agree, it would be very deflating now, especially after Sunday. But if I had a binary choice I'd take that and the silverware. Clearly, I'm hoping we get both! And we should do.

Virgin Media 2 showing the game tomorrow night, for anyone in Ireland interested.
-
Waiting for Eurostar at St Pancras. Quite a few Villa about.
-
Just left Macclesfield and heading to Euston.
🎶we’re on our way, we’re on our way…..🎶
-
Good feeling about this one. 0-4 to the Villa Watkins, Zaniolo, Diaby and Rogers.
-
Flight was delayed out of Manchester, 10 minutes to rush to the station, felt like I was on Race Across the World! Loads of Villa about. I am beyond excited!
-
First class French trains are, how you say, tres bien, no?
-
You on the TGV out of CDG?
-
We have Unai Emery.
-
We're having Lasagne for dinner tomorrow, so I'm expecting a Zaniolo strike.

Enjoy yourselves those going. Make noise like they did when they came to VP

Zhegrova is out for them, which is good news for us as he is one of their better players.

Zhegrova and out, hopefully.

Oui.

How does not winning the conference league make us more likely to finish 4th?
I want us to and think we can win every game between now and the end of the season.
-
How does not winning the conference league make us more likely to finish 4th?
Is anyone saying that? People are just being asked the hypothetical would you take guaranteed 4th and CL qualification but no trophy, or the conference trophy but finishing 5th and missing out on Champs League aren't they. I'm sure most here think they will do both now.
-
Noted. Though I didn’t think anybody mentioned that what they were talking about didn’t have anything to do with reality.
Might as well keep it real though as it’s an amazing situation to be in that we don’t really have to escape to fantasy land anymore.

A few titbits from the LOSC Pre-Match email sent to 'home' fans. May be of use to some of you, ahem, home fans.
Stadium Doors open at 5.15pm. E-tickets to be printed on A4 paper.
There will be checkpoints where you'll have to show your tickets, particularly on the Allée de l'Université which is on the side where the Metro Line one stops are.
They are advising to get down early so you can get through the checkpoints.
At the ground food stands are colour-coded : blue for burgers and chips (€16), red for hot-dogs (€14), and black for Croc'Welsh (a sort of Welsh Rarebit toastie) (also €14). You can scan QR codes around the stands, order online and collect in the dedicated queue.

4 players on yellows tomorrow and at risk of a ban of next game if we get there. For semis carhs wont matter if booked unless they sent off
Luiz diaby mcginn and cash

Everyone going have a brilliant time ! I'll be trying to find a pub Paddington area showing it, should be easier this time as doesn't clash with Liverpool game .

A few titbits from the LOSC Pre-Match email sent to 'home' fans. May be of use to some of you, ahem, home fans.
Stadium Doors open at 5.15pm. E-tickets to be printed on A4 paper.

Let’s make sure we buck the current trend for English teams in Europe.

Let’s make sure we buck the current trend for English teams in Europe.
I was thinking the same. Looking at the broader picture, it's good for European football if an English team only wins one of the competitions.

If I had to choose, maybe the one that would enable you to enjoy your game tomorrow even more. :)

Probably the biggest four days for the club in a long time. Goes well and we are in a European semi-final and 6 points clear in 4th place.
Got to be defensively solid from the off tomorrow night and I think we opened them up enough times at home to suggest we can get a lt least one goal out there.

Early start for me… On train from Sandwell and Dudley to Euston, then a quick trip under the channel to Lille. Semis here we come! UTV

It is a local specialty snack
https://commedesfrancais.com/gb/story/welch-plat-nord
It's just a simplified form of "croque" from the verb "croquer" which means sink your teeth into/munch. A bit like light to lite or chicken to chik.
But yeah, fuck off you frogs! SIXTEEN Euro for cheese on toast!
-
I went to a really nice restaurant in Oban last week (EE-USK on the harbour). Apart from the fresh local fish, seafood platters, langoustines etc. they had deep-fried Brie on the menu.

All the best on the travels and bring the luck!
Let's hope for a positive outcome !
Up the Villa!

I remember that from the 80's , was a big thing then . Pretty sure it was one of the set starters at Bernie Inns

I'm surprised the Croque Monsieur is a toasted cheese and ham sandwich and not a shout from the red light district.

I told my wife I'd be late home as watching this. She has no interest whatsoever in football and doesn't really understand the obsession. I said it was a massive game so I have to watch it. Quite reasonably, she reminded me that I've said the same thing about every game we've played recently. I found it hard to explain to her that it isn't often Villa find themselves in this situation where every game is bigger than the last. I love it.

Do you get the eye-rolling thing when you tell her you're watching a game? In her eyes, it's a hobby that might as well be playing Pokemon with a bunch of teenagers.

My other half knows more about where I'll be with the Villa than I do, as he keeps a schedule of it in his phone along with his work rota. It's great to be with someone who just accepts that I'll be off somewhere whenever we play and never gives me any bother about it.
My mate I go with used to have the same with his ex. But now he's with a woman who doesn't understand it and tries to book things on days when we have a game. It's beyond the pale, cruel, and should be illegal.

Must we pursuit it such filth.

Saint Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, Footy, meaning before she knocked around with Jesus, she had sex for money. Fanny like an empty headlock, I reckon.

My friend you live in football heaven. Cherish it.

I'm "looking forward" to the div who does the post-match TNT interviews. "Unai, I'm thinking 1-1 is a great result and the team was really great. What's your favourite breed of dog, and do you think MacPhee is good at corners?"

"Unai, great win, but do you think the shine has been taken off it by Arsenal and Man City going out?"
-
Post match interview with Unai will be "do you want the Man Utd job?"

Yep, I do! He's probably just glad to me out of the house, to be honest.

“Great goal for Luiz tonight Unai, is he what Arsenal are missing?”

Lets just say she merely tolerates it. Until she doesnt.

Not sure who that prat was that did the commentary last week but i ended up having to turn the sound off at about 50 mins. Hope it's not him again.
-
Ah I have to say the bloke who was commentating last week had me a little misty eyed - he went on a right one at one point about how historic Villa are, how we're undoubtedly one of the top clubs of England and how special Villa Park is. I really wish I could find a clip of that, if only to confirm to myself that I hadn't imagined it in my European Villa haze.
-

I think he’s done every one of our UECL games on TNT so far, so I wouldn’t go getting your hopes up
-
I’ve signed up to TNT that’ll be us doomed.
-
If you want an alternative commentary, the game is being shown in Ireland on Virgin Media Two, coverage starts at 17:30hrs.
Not sure of the best way to tune in from the UK, but it might be easier than TNT.

It's Dempsey isn't it? He's one of the better ones, I find.

The big man's Mom could get pregnant in an empty room.
Genuinely laughed out loud at that :)
-

That's him, I thinks he's ok but never sounds particularly natural. He used to anchor the Boxing in the early days of Sky so I can only ever picture him in a tuxedo.
I watched most of last nights Stockport game on Virgin Media Two. The commentary was well balanced and the only time I took issue with it was when they described the Emptyhad as "famous for it's atmosphere" or some such nonsense.
-

Dempsey's fine.
That bloke who came on the pitch at the end and tried to ingratiate himself with our players is an arse. Win, lose or draw, I hope the gendarmerie batoncharge him tonight if he tries similar.
-
Playing in all white tonight - is that an omen?

Could be, that's what we wore against Dynamo Kyiv in '82.

They mainly caused us problems in the wide areas in the first leg and I just wonder whether after Moreno's cameo on Sunday, if there is a possibility that he might start as well as Digne tonight.

Moreno's out for 3 weeks with a calf strain, so I doubt it.

SHA's new stadium plans are more likely to leave him rattled than this.

The Most Hated Argentine. Does the title come with some sort of gold trinket he can hold in front of his crotch at the ceremony?

Oh missed that bit of news. Makes him very doubtful to start tonight then!
-
He will love that hatred - he will thrive off it (Although SUE has mentioned that he needs to keep the emotions in check)
As for other halfs
Ive had 2 wives and both of them have been treated to anything they wanted of my time....but every season i put up the fixture list and say "dont book anything on those dates" not usually a problem until TV companies rip the list to shreds.
I have told both wives, at different times obvs, i love them very much and if they left i would be devastated but is would still be at the villa so dont ever use that as leverage :)
-

That's the problem for me, and it's why i can't stand Jonathan Pearce either. They sound pretty false and self important, pronouncing things in silly ways for effect. Anyway, as someone else pointed out it is usually him so it probably will be again, unfortunately.

They obviously haven't realised that he will love this pantomime villain role and wind them up even more.
Looking forward to seeing him have them on strings

Just realised we wore claret and blue in that quarter-final, as they wear white shirts and blue shorts. Now I'm worried.

I'd have kept Rogers in rather then Olney but what do I know?

Yeah, team's been out for 15 mins but I don't want to start the match thread in case I jinx things. Too much responsibility. :)
-
Munroe on the bench. No idea what position he is though.
Left footed defender who is Declan Rice's cousin, apparently
-
Decent line up. Strong team with good options to bring off the bench if we need them later, like Bailey and Rogers. And Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne is our best defence. Let's FTF.

No thanks. I’ll go to the ATM.

Yep, felt immediately calmer with that back 4. Though with Carlos, Lenglet and KKH on the bench it feels like we have cover too.

Harsh on Rogers but I guess experience will count for a lot this evening.
