Ajax aren’t the team resembling the many glories of their past. But it won’t be easy. We should win over two legs but the first leg is crucial not to get off to a poor start. We’re in pretty decent form and should be confident of getting something out of the game in Amsterdam.
I’ll go for 2-1 Villa. Bailey and the on fire Watkins.
-
Think it'll be an away draw, and we win it at home.
-
We're all going to Athens!
Win or draw for me. Hopefully the former.
-
And so we welcome back Thursday football, my how I have missed it!
Of course, one shouldn't be so sniffy but my desire for the CL has doubled once somebody made the obvious point that we will play on Tues/Weds and Sat if we qualify.
It will be a great trip for the supporters, I'm missing out due to the proximity of the Cheltenham Festival but wish everyone a fine couple of days away and believe we will come back with positive result. Things are still a bit tight injuries wise but I think Emery will play a strong side even with one eye on Sunday.
1-1
-
Just dont hope complacency doesnt creep in like we have seen recently in games. Ajax may not be the team of the past but if they are underestimated they can pose problems.
Hoping pau will get some minutes as a sub as we need him sunday. Id keep konsa and lenglet at cb and have digne start
Tempting to give gauci a debut.

2-0.

A surprise start for Zaniolo leads to his redemption.
-
----------- Martinez -----------
Cash Lenglet Konsa Moreno
----- Luiz - McGinn ----------
Zaniolo ------------- Rodgers
--- Diaby --- Watkins -------
-
You've got the poll options in the wrong order. Guaranteed defeat now then. :(
-
A surprise start for Zaniolo leads to his redemption.
Are you also predicting a 'worldie' from him?
-
I've dampened my expectations frmm 'worldie' to 'shot on target', past 'just stay on your feet for more than ten seconds' and have finally arrived at "don't get booked."
-

I'll be happy if he didn't fall over every time the ball comes near him.

I am sticking with Run around a bit and try and make a nuisance of yourself.

It is imperative that we FTF.
So that's what I think will happen.
Villa by one goal.

Feel a bit bad that I gave-up on him quite early but he's looked so slow from the get-go. I'd settle for one more classic Cascarino header between now and May which wins us a point(s).

Id go with as strong a team as possible, whats the point of qualifying for European comps otherwise? Would start Torres if even 90% fit. Konsa will hardly be as poor again. Seems like only a couple of selection decisions really, Digne or Moreno and Tielemans or Diaby. Tielemans has done very little over last three games so maybe reward Diaby for his game winning contribution on Saturday. Big game to put Tim in for but I dont see many alternatives. He should be ok next to Luiz anyway. No way to Zaniolo or Rogers from the start.
-----------Martinez
Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne
McGinn, Iroegbunam, Luiz, Bailey
-------Diaby, Watkins
-
Sold out now over there, 55k. Only about half a dozen left at VP, apart from LG and TV.
-
Last chance to win something this season, no point in half measures, strongest team possible presuming Ramseys out?
Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Torres
Digne
Luiz
McGinn
Tielemans
Watkins
Diaby
Bailey
-
Let’s not Moscow it.

I'd keep Torres for Sunday. Lenglet has done pretty well as a 4th or 5th choice.
Need a performance from Tielemans and Diaby
-
Every time we have this debate about how strong the team should be and every time Unai goes with a pretty strong starting 11
so against Ajax in the last 16 of a European competition he isnt going to change now, posters can say what they like which is fair enough everyone has an opinion but Emery will put out a very strong team to win the game, thats what will happen, and i agree with him not that he's asking for my consent
-
Duran and Carlos back training.
-
Surely the four subs from Sunday are likely to start and that's why the substitution occurred so late?
-
Diaby and Pau Torres were summer signings and they should be starting a game like this.
1-3 Villa.
-
I’d put Digne in at left back, leave Lenglet in, play a midfield 3 of McGinn, Luiz and Tielemans and a front 3 of Watkins, Bailey and Diaby.
If we weaken the team we just may find ourselves chasing the tie in the second leg.

Diaby,McGinn and Zaniolo are at risk of being suspended for second leg If booked so maybe McGinn in particular could be held back for Sunday V Spurs.

Are they? Aren't yellow cards reset for the knockout stages?

Yellow cards don’t get wiped out until after the quarter finals.

No one, McGinn has to play. I don't think we have any reasonable cover for the likes of McGinn, Luiz and Watkins in the squad. Lenglet has actually done ok covering for Torres but the drop off from Luiz to Tielemans or Watkins to Duran or McGinn to Iroegbunam or Zaniolo would finish us.

Exactly. We don’t have the luxury or depth to mess about in central midfield.

I wonder how many Villa will be getting over to the Dam tomorrow?
6k?

Yeah. Seemingly foggy both here and over there. Wouldn't want to be chancing it tomorrow. And sat in the lounge so not all bad.

If its any consolation, I am looking out my office window to Schiphol and it's currently sunny, so delays should be minimised.

The forecast is good and given the amount of Villa fans expected on the Dam tomorrow, it's a good job it is. The dodgy bars on Dam offering all-day breakfasts and pints of gassy Dutch beer crap like Heineken will be rubbing their hands.

Thanks. Still at LHR. Now showing 2.00pm. Not holding my breath. A few Brighton here in the lounge too - their flight to Milan is also delayed and connection to Rome missed.

Can anyone dig-out the match thread from 2008 last time we played this lot? Had a quick search but looks like it might be on an earlier version of the forum. It would be interesting to see who was still posting then.

I think Legion predicted a 2--0 away win.
-
I think Amsterdam Airport is great, I fly through there about 20 times a year and other than some delays with the remodelling recently I've never had any problems. CDG, Heathrow and Frankfurt are far worse and are the 3 I try to avoid whenever possible.
-
I can see us winning the First Leg 2-1.

Is a presser from Unai expected before the match?

I flew into Amsterdam last year and had to queue for an hour to get through passport control.

Martin and Randy is a match made in heaven that is going to see us have a decade of dominance in the Champions League very soon. Looking at the team tonight I think he should have rested Laursen and Barry though.
-
Is a presser from Unai expected before the match?
It's contractually required.
-
I always try to avoid Perpignan airport, which is SHITE.

Winning (or going far in this competition) helps the English coefficient re that extra CL spot.
So we really could do with winning this tie even if some of our lot think it's just another fixture to fulfil.
Ajax v Aston Villa at the Johan Cruyff Arena feels like a proper European fixture anyway.
The game has sold out n'all. So the natives feel the same way.

Can't Skip (https://english.ajax.nl/articles/van-t-schip-on-injuries-to-berghuis-and-bergwijn-and-showdown-with-aston-villa/) on the Villa:
Intentions of Ajax
Van 't Schip was asked if Ajax will turn up with defensive intentions. One journalist even spoke of 'concrete football'.
"We don't want to give too much away anyway, you never want that," the coach replied. "We mainly want to build on what we are doing. What it will look like also depends on the opponent. They are quite strong, so it could be that we are going to be pushed back. But we will try to be on the ball as much as possible."
Van 't Schip sees the meeting with Aston Villa as a "nice challenge". "You only have to look at their place in the Premier League - they are fourth - to know they are very strong. In a lot of ways, it's just a good team. They are defensively strong and have experience. In addition, they have speed and are dangerous when play restarts. They can be constructive but also very direct. We will have to play very focused. If we lose the ball in places where we are vulnerable, it can become very dangerous."
FA Cup semi-final
During the press moment, Jordan Henderson also chimed in. The Englishman, of course, knows Aston Villa like no other. Does he have another showdown with the Birmingham club that is close to his mind?
"I have played against them 22 times, but the game I remember most is a lost FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. I have won more often than lost when playing them, but that is the one that hurts the most. Funnily enough, defeats always linger longer."
"Against Aston Villa, it is always difficult. That was true as a young Sunderland player and later with Liverpool as well. And it will also be the case tomorrow. I watched Aston Villa on television this week against Luton Town and they are just a very good team. Perhaps one of the teams in Europe with the best form. And I am a fan of the manager: Unai Emery."

I suppose he forgot the 7-2 as he was only watching from the bench.

I've never been in AMS as I tend to fly OneWorld. I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind LHR, even if it is bit pricey to get to/from the city.
-
I always try to avoid Perpignan airport, which is SHITE.
I once flew from Castres airport to Orly whilst on a visit to Mazamet. When we turned up at the airport there was no one there, someone had to call a chap who came and opened the door, checked us in, did the security by gently tapping our luggage, walked s out to the 6 seater and waved at pilot to get on with it. However it was near dusk and pilot wanted runway lights switched on, this caused another problem as light switcher wasn’t there and after being told that there will be another 30 minute delay for the switcher to turn up pilot decided to go for it anyway…Only in France😂

I have never had a problem at Schiphol either, in comparison to Birmingham or Manchester it’s a walk in the park.
-
As well as the usual reasons for wanting the Villa to win, I'm not sure I could stomach a load of nonsense about 'Hendo' which would undoubtedly grow into crap about him playing for England this summer and how much he loves Klopp (RIP).

I went through on my way to Stockholm with my son who has autism. The detectors kept going off even as I slowly stripped items of interest (watch. belt etc). My lad became more and more anxious as the armed security took an interest and I tried to explain we may be in for a "melt-down". The opposite occurred as my son noticed the Heckler and Koch machine guns and struck up a spirited conversation about shooting people. We then had a spirited sprint to the exit gate.

My mistake, I thought he didn't qualify because he hasn't been at the club long enough.
-
I think that was the case for the group stages, but he has been here 2 years in March so qualifies.

Kellyman isn't in the European squad.
He wasn't in the summer, but he's listed as part of b squad on the UEFA site now so we must've sorted it out in January.

KO 17:45. Such a stupid time for what is the tie of the round. I'd assumed it was a 19:45 KO. Missus is going to be out, kids would be tucked up in bed, pizza delivery on the way. Instead I'll have to try and do kids' dinner, bath and bedtime (solo, missus is out) whilst keeping half an eye on it. Not happy.

18:45 locally though which is a pretty common kick off time for midweek games in the Netherlands.
-
My Ajax supporting friend says they are the worst Ajax side for decades and have no hope. They just lost to Alkmaar, who we humped in the group stages, and they Brighton, who we humped in the league, beat them comfortably. As long as we play the team in front of us not the club's reputation, we should have enough to win both legs. Rarely works out like that though does it?
Digne, Diaby and Iroegbunam in for Moreno, Bailey and Ramsey for me. Might be a big ask for Tim but we kept him around instead of Dendoncker for a reason and now we have two midfield injuries, he's next in line. I suspect we'll see Tielemans out wide and both Diaby and Bailey though.

Half the 1st leg games kick off at 5.45 pm and the other half at 8 pm. For the 2nd legs, the kick off times swap, so each tie has a 5.45 pm and 8 pm kick off. So that's why the 2nd leg at VP is an 8 pm kick off. Don't forget that the UK is 1 hour behind CET.

Given the thread about a club anthem or chant or whatever, is there a reason we don't just push this one more? If all of Villa Park were belting that out just before kick off it's as good as anything else on offer. (I do think I could hear the crowd singing it before a few games recently bit it was drowned out by music being pumped into the stadium)

Wonder if it's the same twats who were buying tickets without travelling for the other games, just so they had them on their booking history? They should be made to eat their season ticket cards on the pitch at HT on Sunday, then immediately have them cancelled afterwards.
