Hypothetical obviously.
There was a discussion on Twitter regarding a club song before the game.
I know we have Crazy Train but it doesn't really get belted out.
Arsenal have recently introduced their North London Forever song. Some guy originally made it and the club adopted it and they play it before every home game. It does seem to get the crowd pumped up.
So what would you go for for us?
-
If we'd won the cup in 2015 I do think 'Aston Villa That's Who' could well have caught on as it would have had a feel good factor with it.
I am not sure anything will ever stick though - we are a bit too cynical for that!

The hook was OK, the verses were a bit shit imo.
Good shout though.

Spizz Energi “The Sun Nevers Sets on Aston Villa”
-
Nah not for me.
Though if I had to choose
Give a little bit by Supertramp.
It’s slow, you can clap along and the words aren’t too difficult which is often a problem for large swathes of our support.
-
I think this has been discussed before. Just make it 'Enter Sandman', like Virginia Tech have.

Not much singing going on there mate 8)

Looks great until they do the close ups and then it’s typical American half arsed celebration.
-
Spizz Energi “The Sun Nevers Sets on Aston Villa”
It's better than I remember, just had a listen
-
Holte Enders in the Sky could be it. Just need re-recording.
-
I'm an old fart but I'd have Theme from an Unmade Silent Movie, followed by a rousing chorus of The Bells are Ringing.
I know it'll never happen , but it would make me happy.
-
“Tombstone Shadow” By Creedence Clearwater Revival

Who in the name of all that is holy chose 'Crazy Train' as our run out music?

I'm not young either but that tune just reminds me of the early 80s at Villa Park, I find it so dull and uninspiring like the team for the majority of the that time. I can hear it now and I can remember the empty worn out stadium, the weekly hammerings and players like Dean Glover, Paul Kerr and David Norton ::)

There are better Ozzy songs, Children Of The Grave by Sabbath would be much more intimidating for the opposition 🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
-
I assumed Crazy Train was just because of the Ozzy/Birmingham connection.
Shame Ocean Colour Scene support the wrong Birmingham team. I reckon there's a couple of their songs would sound good belted out before a game.

No.

No...cean Colour Scene?

I've blanked all that out. It reminds me of the glory years , because of Tony Butler and BRMB.

I understand a lot of Villa fans have fond memories of this song 🙌🏼Just my opinion, I didn’t start having a season ticket until Graham Turner took over.

It's only the vocalist that's a bluenose isn't it? Guitarist and drummer are definitely Villa.
-
Planet Earth - Duran Duran would be good . Some of them were Villa fans.
-
This thread shows why we haven't really settled on an anthem!
I actually like Crazy Train! Didn't one of the member of Duran Duran do a villa song? Holte End Hotel?
-
“Tombstone Shadow” By Creedence Clearwater Revival
If you're going for CCR it's got to be "have you ever seen the rain" That's such a good tune and I experienced belting it out with 25 villa fans in Spain last year. It was absolutely ace.
-
How about fuck all music?
-
I assumed Crazy Train was just because of the Ozzy/Birmingham connection.

Craddock and Oscar are Villa, Damon Everton. Foxy’s the only nose.
EDIT: Damon’s left, forgot that.

Who sings that?

We tried the latter again, under Houllier or McLeish. We came out to funeral bells and nobody started singing. It was terrible.

I know someone who went to school with the OCS singer. Apparently he was a Leeds fan at school but started supporting Blose when the band took off, to help with the band’s Brummie image.
-
We used to have a catchy little number called ‘hey Aston Villa’
-

I love OCS - regularly see them, and am buzzing about going to see Simon & Oscar on tour. Think they have enough villa connections to be featured at the Villa, but shouldn't be allowed near football after THAT England song
-
Planet Earth - Duran Duran would be good . Some of them were Villa fans.
Fuck no…..every DD track (bar girls on film) is just shouty shite.
-
Till recently, we could have done "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
-
In an ideal world it would be ‘Summer in Summer Lane’ or ‘Bells Are Ringing’ but their time has passed unfortunately.
-
Who in the name of all that is holy chose 'Crazy Train' as our run out music?
I say this every week to a mate or sometimes just to myself. Usually after I’ve asked said mate what the song is called (again)
-
We should use white flag by bishop briggs. I know it sounds like a terrible title but it is words akin to say she would never lie down!
-
How about Panic by The Smiths .

Your own. Personal. Jesus.

My Ozzy choice would be Dreamer.

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Jimi Hendrix used to stand on The Holte End (left side, Tiswas, Celtic) in our Ron Saunders heyday.
To be honest, I’d love to hear Planet Earth by the Double D’s. There’s a singalong in there with the “Ba Ba Ba’s”…”This is Villa Park…you’re listening to Villa Park”.
For full disclosure, I might have had a drink tonight.
-
If it’s got to be Black Sabbath, then Paranoid is the choice for me. However, Have you ever seen the rain would be brilliant.
-
Kick out the jams motherfucker by MC5 would upset Sky.
-
What about, Smack My Bitch Up ?
-
If it’s got to be Black Sabbath, then Paranoid is the choice for me. However, Have you ever seen the rain would be brilliant.
Good call on the track Black Sabbath, I think it might terrify everybody in the crowd though with the sound of unerring dread it creates 🙌🏼
-
We don't need one. Given the choice between that manufactured and cloying thing Arsenal do or just coming out to a mild round of applause I know what I'd prefer.
-
I'd like Plaistow Patricia to be played as we come out.
-
I abstain by Napalm Death. Followed by a mosh pit.
-
I'd like Plaistow Patricia to be played as we come out.
Free jellied eels and cockles handed put beforehand ...
... but only the first 6 words to be played.
-
Something by ACL DC.
-
Adapt the Richmond aussie rules club’s anthem ‘Tigerland’. It’s furken awesome. Every change to the Villa scans the same…
Oh we’re from Villa Park
The fighting Lions, we’re from Villa Park
In every weather you will see us with a grin (oi)
Risking head and shin (oi)
If we’re behind, we’ll never mind
We’ll fight and fight and win
For we're from Villa Park
We never weaken til the final whistle’s gone
Like the Lions of old
We're strong and we're bold
For we're from Villa
(Claret and blue!)
We're from Villa Park
-
If it’s got to be Black Sabbath, then Paranoid is the choice for me. However, Have you ever seen the rain would be brilliant.
Whenever I'm out with the lads Have You Ever Seen The Rain by CCR gets played full volume and it goes: "i wana know have you ever seen the rain coming down on Villa Park" It fits perfectly but anyone reading this who doesn't know the song won't have a clue what we're on about.
-
Anything would be better than Hey Ho Aston Villa that they played before and straight after the game
I don’t mind crazy train for the walk out because it’s Ozzy so there’s a connection
unmade Symphony is the true iconic walkout song for Villa supporters of a certain age, yes, it so bad it becomes good and it’s totally unique to Villa they should never have stop using it and it would have become like Z cars at Everton
Opposition teams aren’t going to get intimidated by a song walking out of the tunnel, so use something which is historically Aston Villa or has a connection to a local band
Which in fairness we do at the moment
Just got to drop the hey ho stuff

Dan Sealey who was the bassist a few years ago is the husband of my wife's friend. I sort of know him, I went to their wedding. Anyway, he's a Villa fan too.
-
When I was a ball boy we used to come out to the theme from the A team but certainly didnt play like that!
-
If we had to have one, Symptom Of The Universe by Sabbath or The Mercy Seat by Nick Cave. The latter builds to a climax but you'd have top get the timing right which would be virtually impossible the way the teams arse about in the tunnel.
-
Whenever Vila fans have a discussion like this it's always middle-aged heavy metal fans who seem to shout loudest wanting Ozzie or Sabbath. We've got that now and it's ok in that it's a loud noise, but it's a million miles from a club anthem and I honestly imagine it just passes most people by. I certainly don't sit there and recognise it as a club song.
I guess you could argue there's a difference between walk-out music and a club anthem. Wolves use Liquidator well, but it's not an anthem.
Proper anthems in my mind are the likes of Blowing Bubbles - West Ham, Blue Moon - Man City, Sunshine on Leith - Hibbs, YNWA - Liverpool, Marching on Together - Leeds, Z Cars - Everton, KRO (shudder) even Delilah - Stoke
Unfortunately, we don't have that. The closest we had was TFAUSL, but we let that slip and it wasn't a sing-along anyway. TBAR and HEITS just don't really stand up against the others mentioned in my view.
Coventry have taken to singing Twist and Shout and it works well. I think Arsenal have done well - it's a song adapted from a local band and whilst it's introduction was arguably manufactured the song wasn't. I don't see how that's any different to any clubs fans introducing a song, just as we are discussing now.
The most organically introduced new song we've had in recent years was probably Don't Look Back in Anger, but that ran its course. I'd much prefer it to Hi-Ho at the end of a game though, but I get all people don't like Oasis and their M City connection.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but I'm pretty sure as far as an anthem goes it's not some heavy metal wall of noise, local artist or not.
-
What we need is a fan lead forum supported by Chris Heck.
PS I do go Sabbath - Paranoid followed by TFAUSM.
-
Oasis dont look back in anger was great. No idea why we stopped that
-
Players come out to War Pigs-Black Sabbath
Following a win .... Either Way - The Twang
Club anthem, no idea
-
A bit left field but something classical could work. I always felt that one of the skilled wordsmiths or musicians on this site could put Villa related words to the Anvil Chorus. A rousing let’s go to work song.
I’ll get my coat.
-
-
We will never have an anthem because there’ll always be a sizeable minority that thinks any suggestion is ‘cringe’.

Yeah, one person's cool is always another's cringe.
Which is why it should be Pass the Dutchie by Musical Youth. Everyone loves that!

I'm an old git and know the song and would gladly join in with it. But, why at Villa Park? - is there some relevance to it or is it just a random pick?

The Ramones version is the first time I heard the song. Very energetic.

I'm no disc jockey or anything, but here's what I think....
Bachman Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet (doesn't work for the second half).
In a just world it'd be this ode to our FA Cup story:
-
Oasis dont look back in anger was great. No idea why we stopped that
it was a moment in time really and like you say was good at the time. They don't really fit our club though longer term.
-

I personally loved it when the fans would sing at the end of the game !

I'd go with Neon Knights myself - the singer then supported Villa as much as Ozzy did!

That's always irked me. Geezer is the only real Villa fan so it should be a Sabbath somg at the very least.

Agree.
Theme From and Unknown Silent Movie, it is what I grew up with. Whilst we are at it bring back the floodlight pilons.

I don't actually know but Villa Park just works with the lyrics. It's really good to sing along to and I guess it's a way of incorporating Villa into it.

Another vote for ‘The sun never sets’ by Spizzenergi/ Spizzoil/ Athletico Spizz 80/Spizzles

Pretty much anything to replace Hi Ho Aston Villa - to me its a Wolves song and I appear to be in a minority at home games surrounded by happy clappers when it comes on, so who am I to argue.

Gra-ver-ley hill riviera
Holte Enders live forever

Have had 'The sun never sets' stuck in my head since somebody mentioned it last night.

As Villa fans we dream of better days.
Perfect imo.
-
My 7 year old loves crazy train and is always playing it on Alexa and is getting into Ozzy and sabbath because of it. If it’s changed he won’t like it!
-
I remember the Bells are Ringing was tried as a walkout song a decade ago and it lasted about 5 games as the remake just wasn't very good.
We just don't have one so it would feel very manufactured to come up with anything unless it was for charity and it caught the imagination of the fanbase.
Holte Enders in the Sky is at least a unique chant we have that the majority are happy to sing every matchday so perhaps something could be created from that?
-
Blue Moon is recognised as a Man City anthem but the part they sing is no longer than HEITS to be fair.

I think we should get a Johnny Cash tribute act to record it complete with the the three Villa-related verses. No-one would sing all that but I’d definitely listen to it on Spotify.
-
Ozzy songs are not Sabbath songs though, Geezer is the Villa fanatic.
If the connection is Villa related it should be a Sabbath tune when Geezer was with them, (various periods to really screw things around) :-)

My opinion is biased, being an electronic music fan. But I love what Feyenoord do.

Have to say I love that song. It’s never really been a Wolves song for me.
I associate The Liquidator with them more.
In the 70’s I used to go to a disco in Bournville and other places and it was always played for the Villa vrs Blues chants. I’m pretty sure it was sang at both grounds back then too.
-

Me too. Know hard house is divisive at best, but Tony De Vit might fit the bill for something like that ..

;D I know its a matter of taste but Imagine that playing as they come out, reminds me of my ZX Spectrum. Having said that I'm sure a lot of people are thinking the same about Sabbath playing, I'm also bitter as Tonys Dad ripped my Dad off on a Green Audi back in '85... the shit.

Out of all the dozens, hundreds maybe, of great Sabbath and Ozzy songs out there, this is the one you chose?
If we're on the topic of metal bands with Villa supporting singers, we should be coming out to Napalm Death surely.
-
I'm a big house music fan but cannot stand hard house, and I used to look down on people that liked it as a bit simple.
To be fair, I am a bit simple so it still stands ;D
There's a bit of a Jekyll & Hyde thing going on with my dance music musical tastes. At one end there's the beard-stroking techno side, which scoffs at anything that doesn't approach free jazz levels of sophistication. The other side wants Steps, hard house, and puerile humour and is just a fucking idiot to be honest.

Symptom of the Universe and Apex Predator isn't going to work.

Racing Club de Lens have a fantastic anthem before their games. It’s called Les Corones and is a regional hymn to the miners of Northern France. Lens is right at the centre of the old French mining industry, long since gone, but the atmosphere they generate pre game is very impressive.
https://youtu.be/ClpUj2x1s9g?si=zsA7hmmAlJiFHqQO
I’ve no idea what we should have though I’m of the older generation where Theme from an Unmade Silent Movie brings back a lot of memories.

Yes, and imagine how many ACL injuries it would cause.....

If you want an anthem, as in one the fans sing before kickoff or after a win, there needs to be some level of organic development of it. It's not YNWA but Liverpool fans developed a relationship with Dua Lipa's One Kiss from a random halftime performance at a final. I'm sure if anyone involved behind the scenes had tried to get them singing that on a regular basis they'd have been laughed at, at best.
At the same time, there could probably be some level of manipulation, or at least trial and error. Play a few songs before kickoff and see which ones get a good reaction and which don't. I'm sure YNWA became a Liverpool song because they played the Top40 before kickoff or something like that. We could do the same, I think Beyoncé's country song is #1 at the moment. That would sound great being yelled out by 40k Brummies every week.
-
Anthems are organic they can’t be prescribed or rammed down your throat by the club or put to a vote. What you need are simple lyrics that can maybe be Villa-ised, you can clap along to it and it doesn’t have much or any swearing. The other factor is that generally they’re by cringe inducing songwriters or bands. Take Forest, Mull of Kintyre by Wings, if that got suggested on here or in general to Villa fans you’d be laughed at but look what that’s become for them. So I’m going as corny as possible and reiterating my earlier suggestion
Give a Little Bit by Supertramp.
-
Adapting lyrics for Neon Knights, in my defence I have a sheltered life, and now I'll probably get sued for copyright issues:
Oh yes, here it comes again
Can't remember when we came so close to love before
Hold on, good things may just last
Nothing's in the past, it always seems to come again
Again and again, again and again, again
Cry out to legions of the brave
Time again to save us from the jackals of the league
Ride out, protectors of the realm
Captain's at the helm, sail across the sea of light
Circles and rings, lions and kings
Weaving a charm and a spell
Blessed by the night, holy and bright
Called by the whistle of the ref
Bloodied players fast descending
Moving on a never-bending light
Phantom figures free forever
Out of shadows, shining ever-bright
Villa knights
Villa knights
Alright
Cry out to legions of the brave
Time again to save us from the jackals of the league
Ride out, protectors of the realm
Captain's at the helm, sail across the sea of light
Again and again, again and again and again
Villa knights
Villa knights
Villa knights
Alright
-
I've just realised it should be this.
-
I've just realised it should be this.
Absolutely!
-
I've just realised it should be this.
Yep.
To the tune of Ghost Riders in the sky
Was walking down the Witton Lane one dark & dusty day
I spied a poor City fan a-running far away
I said to that poor City fan it’s time for you to die
He said ‘yes I know sir
Holte Enders in the sky
He ran down the terraces and fell towards the gate
Little did he know that death was sure to be his fate
He had one more short hour to live & then he’d hear the cry
That every city fan does fear
Holte Enders in the sky
Their fists felt just like granite & their pockets lined with lead
& if they catch a city fan he’s sure to wind up dead
Cuz Villa fans rule Birmingham & City fans know why
Cuz they have seen the glory of…
Holte Enders in the sky
Yippee-aye-ehh
Yippee-aye-oo-oh
Holte Enders in the sky.

Summer in Summer Lane has less words:
You can see the palm trees swaying
Way down Summer Lane
Evry Satdee night there is a celebration
See em chuckin bottles in the Salutation
There ain’t no snow in Snow ‘ill
No need to catch a train
To your southern home
Where the weather’s warm
It’s always summer in Summer Lane
-
I've just realised it should be this.

Holte Enders in the sky
Yippee-aye-ehh
Yippee-aye-oo-oh
Holte Enders in the sky.
The thing is, it 2024 not 1974.
To be perfectly honest, regardless of how much we hate them, that’s fucking disgusting.

It’s only a song. Too many words for today’s attention deficit fans anyway.

Ah the good old days when anything and everything wasn't jumped upon at the first whiff of anything a little controversial or upsetting to the snowflakes.
Thanks for doing Percy,it's hardly Munich or Hillsborough esque.
Maybe we could take out the nasty scary words for a modern version

But that's the one.
I think.

A timely reminder today that some times it's better not to have an anthem.
-
Just dropped into a karaoke bar in the way home and I am reminded how annoying it is that Peter Kay covered Amarillo & made it a Bolton song, but does that really stop us - it’s made for us isn’t it?
I love how the 2nd verse seems to describe Villa Park ….church bells ringing….just beyond the highway there’s an open plain… I can visualise the walk up from Aston station.
We even have a manager who fits now…
…..& Emery who waits for me! …..
(& I know opposition fans would change it to ‘hammer Villa’ …but ‘You’ll never work again’ has never troubled Liverpool enough for them to drop their anthem, nor has ‘wipe that snot…’ nor has ‘just like West Ham they fade & die’)

No.

Has she been out with Jane again?!
-
I didn't like to ask.
-
No involvement from Jane - my opinions are my own!

When it comes to music its always difficult as some like one type while others will hate and vice versa
Nathan dawe is a massive villa fan. Why not get him involved in creating something. His musics very good and im confident he would bw more than happy doing it. I heard beba rexha also supports villa. Why not get them involved together? There was also a recent picture of them together with a villa shirt

You answered the question in the second paragraph with the first paragraph. And asserting that Nathan Dawes’ music is good is making me want to eat my own face.

Strangest anthem/club song was at the end of Leverkusen's match where they won the Bundesliga (finally!), "Land of Hope and Glory" was blasting out! Weird....

😂 She's obviously not a Villa fan but fuck it we'll claim her.

Who is she?

I'm prepared to do a quick Google search but that's it!

I'm an old fart but I'd have Theme from an Unmade Silent Movie, followed by a rousing chorus of The Bells are Ringing.
I know it'll never happen , but it would make me happy.
Agree.
Theme From and Unknown Silent Movie, it is what I grew up with. Whilst we are at it bring back the floodlight pilons.
Anyone know where I can buy/download this track. Massive 70s memories hearing this on BRMB with Tony Butler, especially the League Cup replay v Everton.

West Midlands forever
Whatever the weather
These streets are our own
And the Blues
Can fuck off forever
Cos Villa are better
So please fuck off home

I’ve always wanted ‘villa Forever, I’ll be waiting for a trophy all the time.’ To the tune of the Viva Forever by Spice Girls.

I hope we never have an anthem.

I hope we never have an anthem.
Amen.
-
A club anthem is the what happens when a club doesnt have a soul.
Its like playing music when a goal is scored
If a clube get a anthem, its no longer an club its a brand
You play songs, like we do, that has some resanance for whatever reason - end of chat.
-
Goal music would be ace. Shout by Lulu.
-
I find Hey Baby by DJ Ötzi always adds a touch of class to any public event.
-
I'd go further and play music if the opposition score as well, the chorus of this maybe

I wish we had something as authentic as North London Forever. So jealous.
-
Maybe just skip the football and go full Pitch Perfect
-
Sadly it would be obvious just how jealous we are of it if we did North Birmingham Forever.
-
Mat Kendrick posted a fine rewrite of the Bananas In Pyjamas theme tune yesterday:
Onana and Kamara are helping Youri's flair
Onana and Kamara are hunting as a pair
Onana and Kamara are chasing silverware
Cos on match-days they all try to catch you unawares
-
The Coventry one is bizarre. We’ll live and die in these towns by the Enemy. Depressing lyrics about how awful Coventry is and there’s no escape. The modern equivalent of having Ghost Town as a club anthem.
The Arsenal one makes me laugh because the accent is so contrived and an obvious affectation. The singer is the son of one of the lead actresses in Birds of a Feather!
-
Talking about music
Anybody else hate the fact we play ‘hi ho’ on the final whistle of every game
I mean against Arsenal we didn’t need that shit music blasting out we just wanted to celebrate with players the atmosphere was already there it didn’t need to be contrived
-
The arsenal song is cringe. Music after goals, also cringe.
-
Hi ho silver lining doesn’t particularly bother me. It’s been played for a very long time now and is part of the fabric now. I also like Crazy Train before games mostly because it’s clear nobody playing it would expect anyone to sing along necessarily. Plus it’s a belting tune by someone from Aston which wasn’t written for the football club itself.
I think that’s an important distinction, cos the music should never replace the atmosphere imo, so playing music after goals or tons that are clearly meant to create some kind of false ‘organic’ song like that Arsenal one.

I genuinely started laughing when they tried to sing that last week, the sad, sad bastards.
-
And the Everton one with the high pitched "whooo".
WTF is that?
-
When Liverpool are at home, I like it when they play You'll Never Walk Alone. Soothes the soul and brings a tear to the eye every time. I'm tearing up now, just thinking about it.

Ar, I was wondering that as well, it's very camp.

I quite liked DLBIA as it was very much an organic fan thing. I also like the thought of sha fans leaving VP after a defeat and hearing it.

Do you like Oasis though?
I can't stand them, so I was never going to like the song. I don't like how much people wank off the massively overrated Manchester music scene and especially this terrible band. So when I see our own club using one of their songs it doesn't feel right.
Football fans love Oasis and all that stuff. I don't get it tbh.
-
I don't mind a few of their songs but that's it.
I much prefer a song taking off organically through fans, in this case the ones at the Reading game, than when there was that manufactured attempt at TBAR back in the day.

That's fair. Just wish it was a decent song.

I was at Reading away. And quite frankly the first rendition of DLBIA was brilliant.

to be meaninful it comes from the fans - like villa til I die when Grealish came back.

Hi Ho is annoying because Dingles and Wednesday sing it too. It was annoying that it drowned out the actual song that was being sung after Arsenal.
-
Do Arsenal fans know they're a South London franchise? Plastic twats.
And never mind Man City's 115 charges, when are the league going to relegate them back to where they didn't win promotion from?

Its too 'Wolves' for me - they were playing this long before we were, and its for the happy clappers!
-
Yep. And relegate Man U and Liverpool for match-fixing, and give Tottenham the relegation that they should have had in the nineties while you're at it.
-
We've used Hi Ho to some degree for decades. Not a fan of playing any song after a win, let the fans do their thing naturally and then play it after 5 mins or something.
-

I think more than one club's supporters should be allowed to like a song. We were still singing 'You'll never walk alone' in the early 90s for example, and I think it's a shame that it's been co-opted as a Liverpool/Celtic specific song now. We've been playing it since around the time I started going to the Villa at least, so that's what 3 decades or more than I know of. I don't see a problem with it.
Also agree that they should hold off playing it if there's singing going on anyway.
-
I quite like it, but I'm an archetypal out-of-towner from the shires who goes a few times a season and gets taught SOTV by helpful local blosers when I get off the boat.
-

Not a fan of any music being played before a win either. Five minutes before, turn off that shit and let the fans be heard.
