Saturday 2nd March, kick-off 5:30pm.
Obviously Luton are no pushovers, play good stuff and you see the best of them at home, but any dropped points would be a disappointment here.
We're in good form now so for that reason, I'm going to shock you all and back us to win this game.
Both teams to score, Villa win by two goals.
FTF.
-
It'll be a goal fest and another 4-2 win for us, leaving Nick Owen in a foul mood on Midlands Today.
-
Cliche, but we need to stop them getting up a head of steam. They’ll try for set pieces and load it into the box, which isn’t exactly how they always play but they’ll be aware of our fallibility defending corners/crosses.
We need to control the ball and just make our higher quality pay - I think we will and we’ll win 3-1.
-
Not sure whether the Everton verdict will take the wind out of Luton or put a rocket up them. We'll see. They usually look a good bet to score a goal or two but they cannot defend at all. I expect us to score 2-3 in our current form. Can they score as many? I don't think so. In fairness, this is even more of a must-win for Luton now because of the gap they have to safety. That could well suit us as they can't really go into too much of a low block (in fairness they don't tend to, possibly to their detriment).
Villa win and it's a game we really don't want to drop points in because we'll be hitting a tougher period soon.
-
Did we last play them at Kenilworth Road in the Ch'shit or back in '92?

League Cup in the Di Matteo era
Shudder...
-
We haven't won a top flight game there since October 1989. In fact, that's our only league win at theirs ever, in 16 attempts!

Time for Unai to break another record in that case.
-
My earliest memories of following the Villa are a bit mixed-up but it definitely contains elements of being bullied by Luton Town every time we played them.

I remember Brian Stein scoring a header in a 1-0 win for them at Villa Park, can’t remember exactly when, possibly 1985.
I think part of how we do here, relies on the centre back partnership. I’d worry a little bot about Chambers Lenglet and feel there would be goals in this for Luton. If Torres plays it changes everything.
2-1 us (Watkins, Bailey)

Obviously Luton are no pushovers,
Think you will find that with 20 points from 25 games they are a bit of pushover.
-
Didn't realise they were still in the Cup so instead of having 10 days to prepare for this game (they played their league game early last midweek cos of Liverpool being in the Milk Cup final), it's only 4 days. Meanwhile Don Unai will have had a full week to craft his plan. 1-5 scoreline incoming!
-
We didn’t exactly have to break much sweat to beat them back in the autumn and whilst they were always trying to play football we could and should have scored more than the three we did get. Control the ball and possession more widely and we’ll be much too good for them.
-

League Cup in the Di Matteo era
With Micah Richards waddling around the pitch, being made an absolute fool of. We lost.
-
Didn't Okore score an own goal?
-

Pre season friendly in 2013 when they were non league. We lost 2-0.
-
He can play Centre Half i tells ya 💪
-
Fairly confident for this one. Bet on Luton to win.
-
They were plastic pitch pricks in the 80s/early 90s, right?
-
2-0
-
As with the Forest game, an early 1st goal will be crucial. But recently I think they had the stuffing knocked out of them by drawing at Newcastle when they were winning 4-2. Since then they lost to both Sheffield Utd and Manure at home. That and now knowing they need a win again to drag someone else into the mix should make them open up.
-
That was my only trip to Kenilworth Road. It was fairly clear that we weren’t going to walk the Championship.
-
Went there in 85 or 86 , we lost 0-2 . Played crap .
-
They were plastic pitch pricks in the 80s/early 90s, right?
That was only the half of it. The chairman was David Evans, a tory MP who was a standout prick even back then. He was successfully sued by the Birmingham Six for libel.
-
The way that Luton play, hopefully our centre halves will be able to deal with a lot of high balls into our penalty area and the physicality of their forwards.
We could have done with Mings for this game.
Last time i went their was either March or April 1983 - we lost 2-1 (late goal for them)
-
They were plastic pitch pricks in the 80s/early 90s, right?
Think they also banned away fans, because their fans kept causing trouble.
-
The less said about Luton the better but I suppose we shouldn't tar a whole club with a tainted brush from 30 odd years ago. On the positive side I like their quirky ground and I've always had time for Nick Owen.
But it's precisely this sort of side that can be an irritant, like sand in the suncream, a stone in your shoe or a hangover that lingers for days. That's why I am wary and without wanting incur the wrath of DW, feel that this is one of those games where we, out of nowhere, throw in a rank bad display that surprises and frustrates in equal measure. And we reserve these for TV games it seems. I've been way off with some predictions this season and here's hoping I'm utterly off beam here.
2-0
-
It was my first away game with Villa. May 1992. A kid called Mark Bosnich made his debut in goal.
I'll be there on Saturday for my second visit to Kenilworth Road.
And I was seven years old.
I'm now Thirty Nine with wife, daughter, mortgage, dog.
Bloody hell.
-
It'll be a goal fest and another 4-2 win for us, leaving Nick Owen in a foul mood on Midlands Today.
Good I really have never liked him or Anne diamond. He looks like a vicar with a case of the chufties

I hate this fixture. We always lose at their plastic pitch shithole. Hopefully Unai can continue to de-Villa-fy the Villa so we go there and make our superiority tell and win with the minimum of fuss.
-
It’s the most H&V and Villa supporting thing to downplay our prospects for fixtures such as this. We’ve done it all season with other struggling sides as well. Nothing will be taken for granted with Emery’s squad as we have seen all season. We’ll turn up and come home with the points.
-
The home game was probably the easiest three points we've taken this season.
-
I really hope they stay up... but hope more we batter them on Saturday. It's a tricky one, but if we're going to finish in the top 4 we need to get 3 points from this. They will be practicing wining corners all week I'm sure.
Fingers crossed one or two of the injured players are back.

For those of us of a certain age, Luton were given a sheen of glamour by Eric Morecambe in the 1970’s.

I was there in the players lounge as My Dad went to school with Ray Harford and were old pals . He started asking me questions about Blake and halfway through I said ' should I be telling you this ' Not that I knew much as a teenager , but a fab moment. Les Sealey was having a fag in the Lounge , I was flabbergasted . Times have changed but not that stadium

Any chance that Konsa is back for this?

Any chance that Konsa is back for this?
No one really knows till Friday's press conference but it wouldn't shock me if he was.
-
It would shock me.
-
It would shock me.
Same here. I think he'll "make do" with Chambers and Lengelet for Luton, to give both Konsa and Torres as much time as possible to be fit for Spurs.
-
Luton score a fair few goals, but they’re very leaky so fluency in attack is key.
-
Haaland after destroying them, Watkins hopefully to do likewise.
-
Chelsea having conceded 8 goals in two games beat us in their next match. Luton have conceded 10 in their last two matches and that's worrying me
-
Think we’ll win this 3-0 but I hope Luton somehow manage to stay up this season.
-
I can't see us keeping a clean sheet, think it will be a case of having to outscore them. Luton are in kamikaze mode , entertaining to watch totally open at the back.
-
They are not very good.
We are very good.
If we play to our potential we will defeat them.
-

Exactly - we determine this. If we play well we’ll win. It’s only if we don’t play well that we open the door.
Pace of attack and putting pressure on their defence is the key, we don’t want to get dragged down into a niggly tight game.
-
I'm going for a 2-1 Villa win.

Outscoring the opposition is always a good plan
-
I see their midfielder who has been out all season, scored twice for them last night, the first was a peach. So we'll have to watch him. And Barkley, obvs.
Not sure how close to full-strength they were against Citeh? Kruhl was in goal and he doesn't usually play.
-

7 of the 10 outfield players started their game last Saturday.
-
Playing the last 2 games with no midweek fixture has been a great help to us, the players are looking refreshed, feeling confident of 3 points, going 2 nil Villa, Ollie and SJM.
-
So having seen Konsa back in training this morning any sign of Pau Torres as well or is that too much to ask in one day?
-
Express un Star had this.
The influential centre-back was taken off at half-time during last weekend’s 4-2 win over Nottingham Forest after complaining of muscle pain and will be assessed again later in the week.
But the initial prognosis is understood to be positive, with boss Unai Emery hopeful Torres will be fit to play at Kenilworth Road as Villa look to further strengthen their position inside the Premier League top four.
Looking further down the article they don't have any sources mentioned at all, and seem to be using it as a history of Torres's injuries, along with Emery's quotes post Forest match about the precaution.
-
If there's any doubt at all, just stick Konsa in next to Lengelet, that should be more than good enough. Cash at right back, Digne at left back.
-

Exactly the back four I’d like to see for this with Torres for Lenglet vs Ajax & Spurs.
-
We should beat these?

We should beat these?
Are you asking or are you saying?

We just need to attack well, we’re better than them. They do carry a threat going forward, so they’ll probably score. We just need to score several.

We will batter them. They are a shitty team with a sting, like a wasp in autumn. They may sting us but the overwhelming boot will crush them before they fade away into the mire. The back garden playing Lorraine chase nick Owen Luton fools.

Luton are not that bad at home so i dobt think it will be a walk over at all.
We should win if we pick up where we left off. Fonally getting players back like konsa duran and torres will massively help

I honestly didn't think there'd be any chance of him playing against Luton. As long as Konsa is fit and Pau is back for Spurs, I'll be happy enough.

Torres is integral to how we play though as we saw v Forest in that first half battering. We need him Saturday ideally.

Yea Luton, I forgot they have 20 points from 25 games and have conceded only 10 in their last two games. It'll be a tough nut to crack.

Olaf, agree with you but, don’t forget this is Villa and we usually don’t do things the easy way!!

Tbf luton almost beat united at home. Its incredible they lost that game. Think it will be tight but we should ahve no excuses for winning.
I doubt torres will be risked. He will be needed for ajax and spurs. Now konsa is back it helps massively. Howpfully carlos isnt far away either

I watched that game and while they had a lot of possession, they didn't create too many chances. Saying that, I like their spirit. I hope we crush it on the weekend, and they then regain it it time to send Everton down.
-
Luton look ok going forward but they don't appear bothered about defending much.
-
Luton can be decent. But there is a reason why they are where they are. Let’s not make them out to be any more than that. Like with Sheff Utd away, we do our job as planned and practiced they won’t be an issue.

Yes if we play well we’ll win. We’ve just got to make sure we control the game and don’t give them a sniff. They concede a lot of goals.

We are a bit vulnerable at the back, so controlling the game and minimalizing their chances and set pieces is paramount.
-
We need to defend corners / set pieces far better this week
-
Guess Emery might confirm later but are we expecting Torres, Konsa and Duran in the squad for Luton?
-
Of the three promoted teams, Luton are definitely the trickiest opponents. On their day they are very good. Sheffield United and Burnley are permashit.

Yep and it’s a tricky place to go if you allow them to get up a head of steam. That said, we’re better and if we put in a performance we’ll win.
-
We are 4th for good reason. They are 3rd bottom for good reason. Play even close to the way we can and we'll win. This is the new Aston Villa. Unai Emery's Aston Villa.
-
I've just put the Holy Trinity chap's Forest show on whilst I'm in the kitchen, and he's said we've not lost on a Saturday this season since the opening game. Is that right?
-
Cracking kick off time for those of us with our arse firmly planted to the sofa. Beer in hand, take away ordered, I expect to be entertained!
To be fair I’d take a scruffy 0-1 all day long.
I wouldn’t be holding anyone back for Spurs, if Konsa and Pau are good to go then play them.
-

highly believable given we rarely play Saturdays now
-
One of the benefits of getting Champions League football is that we'd get more Saturday games again. I find myself increasingly struggling to be arsed on any other day.

I'm fully aware of that mate but I'm struggling to see the relevance to my post about only really wanting to go to the match on a Saturday afternoon.

Score a couple of early ones from Bailes and Ollie
Enjoy the show.
That match the other day cannot have done them any favours at all

Torres and Konsa travelling down, but will be assessed Saturday morning.
-
Defensive duo Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres will be included in Aston Villa’s squad for the trip to Luton Town but will be assessed on Saturday morning to determine their involvement.
Konsa has returned to training having missed the last four matches due to an injury sustained in the 5-0 victory at Sheffield United.
Torres was forced off at half-time in last weekend’s 4-2 triumph over Nottingham Forest.
Jhon Durán is progressing well but will not be available at Kenilworth Road, joining Diego Carlos on the sidelines along with long-term absentees Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendía and Boubacar Kamara.
Asked about the availability of Konsa and Torres at Friday’s pre-match media conference, head coach Unai Emery said: “I will include them in the squad for tomorrow, but I don’t know if they are going to be available 100 per cent to play from the beginning.
“I will decide tomorrow morning, speaking with them and how they feel for a very important match.
“Of course, it’s a very tough match, a lot of duels, a very demanding match.”
-
That's good news, especially ahead of next week.
-
I'm pretty sure he's taking the piss now...
@AVFCOfficial
Emery: "I am very demanding with myself, against every team.
"We want to be consistent and to achieve our objectives, we have to respect every opponent."
-
Torres and Konsa travelling down, but will be assessed Saturday morning.
I was going to make a snarky comment about the team travelling down today.
However, it turns out that Luton is further from Brum than I thought.
In fact, every town in that part of the country is further away than it feels they should be
-
Looks like the bands getting back together. Hopefully that's our bad luck used up....
-
hope they're staying at a good hotel i can only think of 1 in Luton

TBH, Luton is about 2 hours away with fair traffic, but I think for several years* we stop in a hotel the night before any match, home or away. I think Emery was talking about having overnight rooms at BH going forward for the home ones and very local away stadia.
*We used to under O'Neill when they were stopping at the Marriot in five ways but might have stopped it at some point to save money. during the leaner times.
-

Doubt it will be in Luton directly, but might be in one of the Spa and Golf ones in the County. They might even do a London hotel.

BBC's predictions thing made me laugh today. Chris Sutton up against two of Twin Atlantic this week. Sam McTrusty's prediction for our game....
Sam's prediction: I should probably back Villa and John McGinn because he is a big player for Scotland and he just lent his flat in Edinburgh to my wee sister and her boyfriend. That's as close as you'll get to me name-dropping a footballer by the way. Villa will probably hammer Luton but, because I am up against Chris, I am going to take a risk here and go with a home win. 1-0
I hope he evicts your sister, pal.
-
If our attack clicks we should score plenty - that’s what we need a real focus on. Pau and Konsa touch and go means the likely starting defence won’t be the best.

Premier Inn, where nothing is Premier but the price. And those TV adverts with their frequency of occurrence and that wanky little tune make me want to put my foot through the TV.
-
1-3 to the boys in C&B.
-
If Luton maintain their man to man approach it can make the game tricky in terms of the aggression they bring, so we’ll have to win that physical battle. But it is also a great opportunity for Bailey, Tielemans and other creative players to run wild as well. I think we’ll score plenty.
-
Fully expecting JJ to score today and set him on a nice run for us at just the right time
-
I reckon Ramsey is due a goal as well. If we play our own game, we should have too much for them.
1-3. Watkins, Ramsey and Luiz. Steve Foster for them.

I am going for the kind of close, hard fought, dirty win that truly great teams know how to grind out when needed. 2-1
-
A direct goal from a corner wouldn't go amiss here either, must be due one of them

The Ross Barkley derby.
Well I hear Luton have injuries in central defence, and I believe Watkins might score another brace or a hat trick ! Haaland I heard scored 5 goals against them other day.
Only Sheffield United and Burnley have conceded more set piece goals than us, thus this is Luton's threat which defence must be aware of. They also love getting crosses into the box.
If we compare managers, Emery is Elite and outstanding, and Edwards is a rookie coach who won't be able to out tacticalise us. I believe Villa score three or four goals to them possibly getting one, with the hope of keeping a clean sheet.
I honestly believe we'll crush these guys today today by a 3 goals margin.
Play Martinez, Bailey, Moreno, Douglas Luiz, and Watkins in this one and potentially rest when three goals up, rotating some of these for Thursday with four games in ten days coming up.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Rogers, Digne, Zaniolo, Diaby, and possibly even Iroegbunam and Kesler be afforded minutes.

Oh god we know what a footy prediction spells….
-
Going for Villa 2 nil, but it won't be easy, in the league at home, they've given Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United all tough games.

After watching Football Focus on the BBC I had to check our game was still on today. Over 20 minutes analysing Man yoos season and their game against Ci£y they discussed all other games at length bar ours and Fulham v Brighton. Not a mention of our game. Nothing. Nada. Assholes. Anyway we are playing after all and and I fancy a quite high scoring game going in our favour.

If we get an early one we will go on and win comfortably, 4-1. If it gets to half time goalless it will be edgy and a single goal will settle it.
-
Luton is featured on 24 hours on police custody so those attending must have their wits about them after wards as the area seems a hot bed of crime.

If it is down to a single goal I think we’ll lose. I think we need to be very front footed in this game.

That's another reason why I don't want Midsomer County promoted to the Premier League. The away days there would be fraught with danger.

A no go area like Sparkhill? Somewhere I go at least once a week and have never had a single problem. And I'm a middle aged white man.

From my research, Maple Rd is where people have to go to attend the match. Can people let us know how they get on because it's reported that you have to go through people's gardens and homes to get by or into the ground, and the entrance is in a row of street terraced houses? That can't be serious?
-
It’s seriously serious.
-
Lots of goals but three points for us.
-
So everyone thinks we're going to win, then.
Think I'll stick a few quid on Luton.
