Sad news that Chris Nicholl has now passed away.
-
I am sorry to hear this
-
"..for a team that have been behind for so long Villa's play is still orderly and composed"
(Cue Thor's hammer)
RIP Chris.
-
Sad news. Am I right to think he was suffering from dementia?
-
A real shame. A major part of my Villa youth.
I was in the crowd almost directly behind him when he scored at Old Trafford. Still makes me smile everytime I think about it.
-
One of my first Villa heroes. RIP HEITS
-
RIP big Chris. A hero to the end.
-
Also scored all four goals in a 2-2 away at Leicester. Not many have done that.
-
A wholehearted, dependable player who could always be relied upon for a few goals a season. I was mooching around Villa Park the day he signed for us and was at OT for 'that goal'. Never to be forgotten. RIP Big Man.
-
RIP Chris Nicholl
-
One of the most memorable goals in our history.
-
On league cup final day too. His most memorable moment with us. After two replays of course but you know what I mean.
-
Very sad news. Great player. RIP big Chris.
-
That's sad news. Chris was an absolute rock and a leader in the teams that gained promotion from the old third and then second divisions, and won two league cups. I was there at the game at Filbert Street when he scored all four goals, but of course the crowning glory of his time at Villa was that goal - glorious in its execution, and made all the more memorable by the occasion, the importance of the goal so late in the game following incessant pressure on the Everton goal, and for the explosion of noise that erupted on the ball nestling in the net. RIP Chris Nicholl, and thank you for everything.
-
That's very sad news. I was in the Holte Suite a few years back and he was sitting on a long table with a few other old un's for a book signing I think so I took a photo and he clocked me and pulled a funny face. It was great. Lovely chap as well on the occasions I spoke to him. RiP
-
Encountered him a few times in a football when I was a lot younger. A strange mixture of a really nice guy, but also one of the scariest people I've ever met. Some of the stories about when he was a manager are legendary.
-
Such a shame. A lovely man.
-
That's sad news. Like many others will always remember him for the equalizing goal at Old Trafford.
Two more personal memories. One is a car journey when my mate's dad who was driving subjected me, his son and another friend of mine to a twenty minute rant about the sale of Chris to Southampton and his replacement being a loser in that League Cup final. Apparently, it was decision that showed that it was time for Saunders to go and that whoever Ken McNaught was, he wasn't to lace Chris Nicholl's boots. A rant that my mates and I would refer back to in the subsequent four or five years...
The other memory, which I'm sure I've shared before, is from my primary school summer fete. I guess Chris can't have been with Villa that long and no doubt was arm-twisted into opening proceedings and then signing autographs for us kids. Anyway, I didn't have a "proper" autograph book, but my mum gave me a small handbag notebook she had spare. Needless to say, the floral design on the front was the excuse for much piss-taking by my contemporaries in the queue for a signature. Anyway, when it came to getting the book signed, Chris asked me my name, wrote me a message along with his signature and - I like to think he'd heard some of the comments from the other kids - as he passed the book back to me, said that it was a very nice book. Either way, with a few words, a Villa player made the seven or eight-year old me very happy and after he left us throughout the rest of his playing and then managerial career, whenever I heard his name mentioned I had a warm glow because of that moment.
-
That’s sad news. I used to see him in the Black Eagle in Hockley and was in awe of him even then. He still had a real presence about him and must have been a formidable opponent.
RIP Chris.
-
When they talk about Aston Villa legends, Chris is at the top table as far as I am concerned
-
Always remember telling him to pass the damm ball ….. next it’s in the net ….RIP Chris …. A true gentleman
-
The goal in the Old Trafford replay, 40 yarder was it? and the 4 he scored at Leicester are imbedded in my memory. Sleep well Chris.
-

Same here. As others have said, a great player, great man. That goal, together with P.Withe's Rotterdam shin-in, was probably the most memorable Villa goal in all my Villa supporting years. What he was thinking, I have no idea but like others, I was fortunate to be right behind the goal.
RIP Big Chris and thanks for everything.
-
Another rock who was instrumental in our 70s march to greatness. RIP
-
Another Villa hero gone.
Thanks for the memories Big Chris and RIP.
-
Agree with all the above comments, a great player for us who was part of an incredible journey from division 3.
The 1975 final was the first trophy we won in my lifetime but a tiny part of me was annoyed at Mel Machin for punching away Nicholl’s header as it would have been one of the all time great headed goals at Wembley. That would have given him the distinction of being the only Villa player to score in 2 league cup finals for us.
He also seemed very down to earth and self deprecating when interviewed - an all round good guy. RIP Chris

This for me as well. RIP Chris.
-
A true Villa legend and all round nice guy.
There will be a lot around the football world who will have memories of Big Chris. He was involved in management as well, most notably at Southampton. Two players who he gave league debuts to were Shearer and Le Tissier.
-
Chris was the first Villa player I encountered in the flesh when I was about 4 years old. I met him again many years later when he was managing Walsall and mentioned this to him and he gently told me off for making feel old.
-
Sad news. I knew he'd been in poor health for while.
Disappointed that nothing has been put out by the club yet
-
"..for a team that have been behind for so long Villa's play is still orderly and composed"
(Cue Thor's hammer)
RIP Chris.
Villa's version of ''they think it's all over''. The line and goal will stick with me forever. I wasn't born but have seen it so many times thanks to my old man.
-
Very sad..proper player great servant to our beloved team
-
Saw his debut at Rotherham .Ian Ross had also signed for us.This was the start of the road to Rotterdam.
My father in law had a movie reel of the wonder goal.
R.I.P Legend.
-
A sad day for all Villa fans. He is a true legend.
-
I was thete. RIP Chris Nicholl

Watched that one all the way in...
-
Sad news. Thoughts with his friends and family.
-

Less then 2 hours after announcement and it is also a Sunday when Villa are not playing. Press team would be a bit bare today and the twitter person is probably too low down the chain to do anything like a pronouncement of his own bat.
-
Very sad news. That cup run, the semis, the finals, that goal - just magic memories. Thanks Chris.
-

R.I.P Legend.
Buying a £70k centre half and still in the old third division. Rotherham was full of Villa and you are 100% correct the road to Rotterdam had commenced. I loved Big Chris RIP and thanks for the memories.
-
I had the pleasure of meeting Chris which I am sure I have shared before, he was a very likeable humble man and I am saddened by his parting.
A real Villa hero and that goal is one of the great Villa moments R.I.P. Chris.
-
Before my time but watched the 77 final footage many times on the official history video. RIP
-
Before my time as a supporter but saw him speak at a legends night at Boldmere Tennis club about 10 years ago, very funny and likeable. RIP Chris
-
Sad news. Chris was one of the key parts in an amazing story and part of many of our teenage years.Great man.
-
Such sad news. RIP Chris.
-
Really sad news. Along with Ray Graydon, he was my first Villa hero. I can still remember being about 6 or 7, playing football in the playground, and pretending to be Chris Nicholl, as well as commentating whilst I was playing. I fell over and scraped my knee, and went off saying, 'Chris Nicholl, goes off for treatment, what a game he's had'. I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times. What a man, what a player. I was also at Old Trafford when he scored that goal. RIP Skipper.
-
I am aware that some of us are of a certain age but it is depressing seeing all your old football heroes pass away. I was at Old Trafford when Chris slammed that one into the net and it seems like yesterday. RIP Chris, a professional footballer in every sense.
-
Pure gentleman and a great servant
Pleased that I am old enough to have seen him play
-
There’s a tribute on Pravda now.

There’s a tribute on Pravda now.
But not Southampton or Walsall yet.

Former NI and Saints defender Nicholl dies at 77 - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68395058
-
He used to live in Basset in Southampton backing onto the Sports Centre and he would often watch my running group training and chat to me and my dad (who is a running coach) about Villa.
I used to love it when I had a race there and would hear his voice shouting ‘Go on Anne!’ - the only Villa player I can say cheered ME on!
-
Very sad
Was at the ,4 goals for Chris game and will never forget, that belter in the net.
Condolences to his family.

-
Sad news but happy memories of a great Villa hero. I was at the 2-2 and That goal at Old Trafford is still clear in my mind’s eye. Like others, I found him to be a lovely man on the few times that I was lucky enough to meet him.
Before his health made it necessary to move to the south coast the Walsall fans were very caring of him. He used to wander off, caused by his illness and they would alert the fans site for search parties to find him and take him home. HEITS
-
Very sad -day. Rest easy Big Man. My Dad and Cousin met him at 140 year anniversary.
That Goal was Folklore to those my age and younger in the pre VCR age.
It will never disappoint mo matter how many times it is replayed.
-
Ummed and Ahhed about posting this pic.. what the hell (Charity game at Villa Park, Charlie was my manager , but got to talk to Chris Nicholl as well). Chris & Charlie were all I expected and more. True Gentlemen, humble and just all round great blokes
(https://i.ibb.co/FJq8NBm/86224.jpg) (https://ibb.co/FJq8NBm)
I showed Charlie Aitken this picture a few years later , when I blagged hospitality ( one of the championship seasons) . Charlie scanned the picture , picked out Big Chris and immediately said , "you know what our back-line only let 32 goals in the 71/72 season." Definitely genuine affection between the two Villa greats.
-
Another hero gone. I was at Leicester and Old Trafford but I think I'm correct in saying that I saw him score in a night match at Shrewsbury just after he joined us? A 1-1 draw I think? Great memories.
-
I had the great pleasure of meeting him, and I asked him about that goal, I said to him my old fella said you were on the half way line, son, he said I was in the car park when I hit it 😆

Charlie was my manager as well! Chris was in charge of the opposition. We lost 2-3. Both were absolute gentlemen.

Ooh yes, there's a memory. I went to that game, with my dad and sister. I remember being car sick on the way there.

You certainly did, I saw it too.

2nd game after his debut at Rotherham.
This link even has some press cuttings report on the game towards the bottom.

Very sad news, Chris Nicholl was an integral part of Villa’s fight back and eventual return to the top flight, I was at the Leicester game and his 4 goals plus at Old Trafford for the wonder goal and his lovely expression after he scored, he was a great centre back, superb in the air, a leader who gave everything for the team
RIP Chris
-
RIP Chris and condolences to the family and friends.
-
RIP Chris and thanks for the memories.
-
A great captain for Aston Villa during the late 1970s.one of our truly golden periods. And a great goal in the 1977 cup final. Rest in Peace Chris and God Bless you, one of my earliest Aston Villa heroes.
-
Oh man. Was there at OT and will never forget "that" shot. Thank you for all the fun in the 70's Big Chris
-
Very sad news, will never forget that night at Old Trafford, a great Villa man.
RIP Chris
-
Had a lovely mention on BBC Northern Ireland news, showing the goal against Everton at Old Trafford, forgot he played for Northern Ireland
-
RIP Chris
I did see him at a function at Villa Park years ago; but his playing career was before my time.
There's far too few Villa captains that have won anything, so he deserves a good send off at our next home game.
-
Chris Nicholl was the first centre half I could name at the Villa, watching him through the promotions from 3rd division to 2nd and then the first Saunders team. I still reckon that 76/77 team was the best team I ever saw play at Villa Park and he was an integral part.
Such a tragedy that the sport which made him a hero to many thousands every weekend caused him so many problems in his future life. It is, after all is said and done only a game.
RIP Chris Nicholl.
-
Terribly sad news. A true Villa legend and a genuinely lovely man. I really hope we give him the send off he deserves.
-
Really sad news RIP Legend.
-
Lovely guy. When our kids were young we used to use the Toby Carvery on Walsall Broadway on a Friday night as a 'treat' into the weekend, as the outlaws had the kids in the week just around the corner.
Most Fridays Nicholl would be in there eating on his own assuming he had digs nearby when he was Walsall manager.
My youngest was a terror, but he took the him to talk to him (& us), & it became a regular chat most weeks as to how both Villa & Walsall were getting on.
RIP.
-
Great player
magnificent Captain
Leighton Phillips was my first villa captain as a fan, Chris Nicholl came soon after and became a firm favourite with me
I do hope he wasn’t as lonely in his later years than it seems suggested
RIP Captain, the old Trafford goal will live forever

While he was living locally Walsall supporters kept an eye on him and if he wandered off they'd be putting out alerts.
-
His family apparently moved him back to Southampton a few years ago.
I think this is OK to post, and not too Eastieish. I think it is from about 3 years ago.

It looks from comments here how highly thought of Chris was. A fine player and as already mentioned one of the few Villa captains to lift silverware.
It seems that we must have taken about 20000 to Leicester that day, 2 great memories Leicester and Old Trafford will top the memories of many
Villans of our age.
I have read through these 6 pages and i have happily shed tears to acknowledge the part that this man had in our clubs great history and folklore.
Fitting that he passed on League Cup final day.
The club had better do a fitting tribute to celebrate his life and passing.
-
Wasn't he featured on the BBC programme about players and dementia?
-
Wasn't he featured on the BBC programme about players and dementia?
Yes Shearer included him in his Dementia, Football & Me documentary. As far as I can recall he interviewed Chris Nicholl in the Black Eagle, Hockley.
-
Another rock who was instrumental in our 70s march to greatness. RIP
That captures my thoughts exactly.
RIP.

That's great, Maidstone, thanks for posting. It's so good to see the man with a big smile on his face and looking healthy. There's one line on there that both surprised and delighted me..
“I’ve remained a follower of some of the clubs I played for, particularly Aston Villa. I’m glad I got the chance to play there, as it was my dad’s club too and a part of our family. It was great to go back to him and tell him that Villa wanted to sign me.”
-
As others have said, Chris was part of that magnificent mid 70s team, so many lasting memories. Only met him once, had a couple of complimentary tickets off him at Hull City!
RIP Chris
-
I remember when players being called up for their country was still a source of pride for fans and reading of him scoring on his debut for Northern Ireland and being so pleased for him - but Old Trafford was just something else. Thanks Chris, you were a bloody nugget mate.
-
Terribly sad news. A true Villa legend and a genuinely lovely man. I really hope we give him the send off he deserves.
Hope he gets a great send off this weekend as he played for Luton before he signed for Villa.
-
So sad to hear this news. Halifax Town were my home town club and as a centre half (as it was then) so naturally was my hero and then again when I moved to Birmingham with Villa. A great play and an all round nice guy.
-
Must be a fantastic feeling going home to tell dad I am playing for the Villa
-
Cracking player for us.
An archetypal Crowe/Wylie signing: good enough for where the team were in 1972 and more than good enough to play in one of the best Villa sides of recent decades five years later.
I'm proud to say I met him at a book-signing.
Thanks for the memories, Chris.
-
Great player, loved him. I was one of many who was surprised at the signing of Ken McNaught, and it took a while before I ranked him as highly as Chris.
RIP big man.
-
Sad news. I will forever remember the four goals at Leicester and the thunderbolt in the league cup final second replay in 1977. Joyous times.
-
He was instrumental in our rise from Division Three to establishing ourselves in the top division. A marvellously dependable old school centre half who defended as though his life depended on it. I was at Old Trafford when he scored that goal in the LCF second replay. It was so unexpected, I don't think I'd ever seen Chris take a shot from distance ever before. I was amongst the Villa fans in the side stand and as he strode forward I remember thinking, possibly shouting, for God's sake don't shoot from there! Thankfully he had more confidence in his own shooting ability than I did. RIP Big Man. A Villa legend in my eyes.
-
Lovely tribute to him at the last Walsall match.
-
I was disappointed to hear a few people, most likely from Luton, make sounds and not pay their respects during yesterday's minutes of silence.
Can't folks just show respect for a minute in honour?
On television, a few voices were heard shouting. The commentator also mentioned it as it was noticeable.
Now I'm not sure why these people aren't instantly thrown out of the ground.
-
To be fair I think there was some confusion or lack of clarity over whether it was going to be a minute’s silence or a minute’s applause.
-
Oh it didn't come across like that.
It interrupted my prayer and I wasn't even at the game.
-
The idiot Ed Arons of the Guardian in his initial match report said that Luton fans were annoyed at the disrespect shown from the away end during the minutes silence for their former player.
It was removed about half an hour later, but it betrayed a significant level of ignorance.
-
From the TV you could hear a few noises, which then gets booed and makes the whole thing sound worse. Don't know if the noise was from late arrivals not knowing what was going on. Can't imagine anyone would intentionally show disrespect.
-
I believe that all football teams should make it very apparent in advance not just on screen and announcement and in programme but by including it on the printed or digital ticket.
It's a time for honouring and expressing gratitude. Be it outlining what needs to be done, with applause or quiet.
It should be mentioned that following the period anyone found to be disrespectful will be removed from the area.
I believe it's terrible behaviour and that the players' families especially and supporters who are especially fond of a player have to go through hearing foolish people disrespect or lack of information or interest for some spoiling that at a time when the stadium should be the calmest, most reflective, and a time for being it prayer and /or reflection of memories.
-
There was no screen and you couldn't hear the tannoy announcement, I assume that there was one. Those of us who knew about Chris's death guessed what was happening. The booing was from the Villa fans towards the few at the back making a noise.
-
Perhaps they were in the concourse and unaware of proceedings? I've seen/heard that happen at VP on occasion.
-
I just think more needs to be done by clubs.
Nichol was a player who represented both clubs so it was somewhat fateful and poignant to have the fixture and that seemingly it was largely honoured despite the few not being respectful.
May he rest in peace.
-

No, unfortunately we've just got some away fans who have sub-knuckledragger from SHA levels of intelligence, and for them it's more important to be a twat than show respect. There were a few idiots in the away end who were deliberately being absolute fucking wankers. I wish they'd piss off and support somebody else, they're an embarrassment.
-

Most tickets were already sold when the news came in of his passing. However the minutes appreciation/ cheering for their life is better as it drowns out any accidental / intentional disrespect.
-
Not excusing what happened yesterday but the tannoy system was like one from a schools sports day. Saying that given the Fact or maybe not that the 1,300 fans there should be our most clued up group poor all round.
-
Luton don’t have a screen either.
