Title: Villa Park
Post by: ASHTONVILLA on December 24, 2023, 10:37:13 PM
Just got rid of my old man, my Sister and nephews (all season ticket holders) Had a robust discussion about Villa Park which I am still incredulous about.

He wants a new stadium near the NEC. Easy to get to from Coventry, no parking issues etc etc.

I would hate us to ever leave Villa Park. He reckons it is because I only rock up three times a year and don't have the stress of parking etc etc.

What is the general feeling here? Am I detached from it? I first went to the Holte in the Brian Little Era (playing not managing). Sure I only get down 3-4 times a year now, but I cant stomach the thought of a new Lego brick stadium the wrog end of Brum.

We've been discussing this elsewhere, but ask him where he thinks he'd park then get him to drive from there to the M42 when something like Crufts is on.

It has been discussed extensively in the Villa Park redevelopment thread. Broadly speaking, most people want to stay at Villa Park, as do the owners (according to their current public position) which is the most important thing. Aside from that, tell your old man to stay off the sherry at Xmas. :)

He wasn't even pissed - I'm the black sheep of the T-total family. Just finished Santa duty and a crate of Beer and three amaretto sours in. I suppose it makes a change from political arguments, But leaving Villa Park is more wrong than communism.

I'll check the thread out.

Fair point, at least with Communism they got to rejoin the capitalist West after 40 years or so. I doubt we'd ever return to B6. :(

Isnt the point that no one has been able to come up with a feasible alternative location?

I assume references to 'communism' are in fact referring to Stalinism?

The NEC is in Solihull which is mostly nose territory plus it's next to Chelmsley wood so it's a massive no from me. We have to remain in B6. Anything else would be a betrayal to our history and our forefathers.

Some people would do anything to get hold of a season ticket ... bit greedy going for 4 though!

I am sure someone on here will know. Just chin-wagging at work, and the conversation about the big screens at Villa Park came up . When were these installed , I am thinking mid 90's ??

IIRC the Big Screen discussion was the forerunner to the Barry not taking the penalty.

In about 97. The company doing them got a few gigs (including Ibrox) but went bust. I remember Abdul Rashid trying to hush it up because it was causing Villa grief. I think they went up a year late because of that particular company failure.

Christ, we were the kiss of death for any commercial partners around that time weren't we? AST, NTL, Rover, even the Mita got swallowed up by Kyocera.
