Job done. Just about.
-
Strange moments in that game.
-
Can’t play like we do in the league vs Man City every week. Looked a little tired and holding back which is understandable. But it’s over and we avoided the extra games.
-
Job done!
-
I bet the 2 day return journey for the chaps in the camper van isn't going to be full of memories of the game.
-
Job done. In spite of Cash and Zaniolo having terrible attitudes.
-
Imagine driving across Europe - IN A CAMPER VAN* - to see that slop.
* as they kept telling us
-
Job done. In spite of Cash and Zaniolo having terrible attitudes.
Bad people.
-
Europa Conference Legue group winners, we know what we are!!
Got what we needed and I'm sure all involved are glad it's done with.
-
Only aim was to get out of the game without losing, with no injuries.
-
Never got out of first gear, but didn't really need to.
We topped the group! UTV.
-
Imagine driving across Europe - IN A CAMPER VAN* - to see that slop.
* as they kept telling us
There were FOUR of them you know!
-
Did what we needed to if slightly fortuitously at times.
-
Always going to be an awkward game given we only needed a point and on the back of the last 2 wins, but bit too half-arsed at the end and we nearly come unstuck
-
On we go, no Euro games to worry about until mid March I think so job done.
-

Pretty much every Conference game we've looked tired and lacking ideas. SJM coming on gave us an engine, such a vital player for us. Job done and avoid two extra games.
-
Job done, minimal effort required, strange end to the game, no injuries, quality goals for both teams to be fair. Onwards to Sunday.....
-
Scissor lifts were more interesting.
-
Zrinjski Mostar, unbeaten against Aston Villa in 2023. Not a lot of teams can say that.
-
I got in the door after a 2 1/2 hour drive from Oxford, put the TV on to watch Mostar equalise. At least the job is done,
-
Zrinjski Mostar, unbeaten against Aston Villa in 2023. Not a lot of teams can say that.
Neither can they.
-
Scissor lifts were more interesting.
Just google scissoring in Mostar.
-
It went a lot like I thought it would. We were never in danger of not winning the group. Mostar behaving weird at the end just standing there.
-

Sounds like a Bowie track from his Berlin period.
-
Ive just googled scissoring and pornhub came up

My mistake, I thought McGinn's goal was a late equaliser.

Ha! The Match thread is almost top of the list.
-
Not particularly arsed about the performance. Job done, no injuries. That'll do.
-
All very routine, but could have been very different had that bizzareness from Marschall looped up and ended in the net.
-
For Zrinjski, the day Aston Villa graced your town was the most important day of their lives.
For us, it was Thursday.
-
Zrinjski Mostar, unbeaten against Aston Villa in 2023. Not a lot of teams can say that.
Neither can they.
Must have left the home game before added on time.
-
I'd imagine that will be the lowest key game of the season.
Anyway, job done till March, and the dream final against Legia in Athens is still on.
-
For Zrinjski, the day Aston Villa graced your town was the most important day of their lives.
I reckon some of those days - esp the one where the bridge got demolished - in the not-that-long-ago war would push it close, mind.
-
Maybe I'm a spoilt Premier League watching shithouse, but their pitch was appalling and seemed very long. Ironically I think the moment Filip smashed a clearance into Cash and it was heading back toward goal, it had a really awkward bounce off the pitch. Possibly spin but maybe it caught one of the 2.5 million divets on the pitch and made it more difficult for their attacker.
But yeah, our close control looked off at time and the pace of some passes. Definitely not helped by the mid-90s second-division pitch.
That's the excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Anyway, job done. I'm glad that Marschall got to make the save toward the end of the game after a few shaky moments. A good experience for the lad but I think he needs a loan to toughen up and get minutes. We need a backup keeper in the window. Whoever the Heaton of 2023 is would be useful (but not the actual Heaton as I think he's a bit too old now).
Glad Zaniolo scored.
I'm starting to worry about Diaby's mini slump but I hope he finds his mojo in the next couple of weeks.
Fairplay to Mostar, kept slogging and I suppose if you're gonna score against the mighty Villa, it might as well be a 25 yarder into the top corner.
-
It went a lot like I thought it would. We were never in danger of not winning the group. Mostar behaving weird at the end just standing there.
I actually found that the most entertaining part of the match, almost a staring competition, bizarre

Wolves and Leicester? (Not that Mostar could anyway as been pointed out.)
-
We did what we needed to do.
-
Very poor performance dripping with misplaced arrogance.
Sloppy, casual, lacking in technical ability and no sign of any urgency. The lot of 'em get a 0 rating.

Could someone post our goal please? Ta

"turgid draw in Mostar, you'll never sing that"

"turgid draw in Mostar, you'll never sing that"
Start that chant on Sunday and I'll join in.
-
Deeply weird game, we kept everything in reserve it seemed to me.
Ah well, top of the group, Zani off the mark, not an entirely negative night. Onto Brentford!

Utter nonsense.
-
As poor a spectacle as it was, the positives are top of the group, Zaniolo scoring, seems to have been no injures, more minutes into Moreno and JJ.

There you are, we have won this tournament now.

We did what we had to do and no more. Unai thinking of the bigger picture.
The nearest we might ever see to a training match behind closed doors.
Mission accomplished. Onwards and upwards.

Group winners
-
Didn’t sound great - but to be honest all bar one of the European games have been pretty bang average. But ultimately got to rotate, hopefully no injuries, and achieved the goal of winning the group.
-
Just back from work. Glad to see the job has been done.
Up the Villa.
-
It’s all very pedestrian these European games. We seem to treat them like a training session and reluctant to break sweat. I guess it’s just doing a professional job and getting the job done.
-
Mostar played 4-4-1-1
With only 5yds between their 2 back lines, one of which was parked on the edge of their box.
Back 4 played very narrow across the width of the goal.
Absolutely no room for our forwards and we were very slow moving the ball.
Pitch looked poor, players on the wing slipping over from time to time.
Less room in their box than Bethlehem on Christmas Eve.
Apart from a few long balls, they showed no ambition until we scored. Whether their game plan was to try and keep it tight until the last 15 and then go shit or bust is difficult to say.
But at the end of the day, it's job done.
Onwards and upwards.
Who are we likely to get?
-
When Emery was winning multiple European trophies I don’t believe his sides league form dropped off at all.
We’ve gone through this group in second gear, it’s played a big part in putting us in the title race.
-
FT: Zrinjski Mostar 1-1 Aston Villa
TNT Sports pundit Joe Cole finks Aston Villa are favourites to win this tournament.
Fixed.
-
I think Emery has managed the European and subsequent league games really well, we got caught cold in the first game but since then we’ve got the job done with the minimum of fuss and most of the squad have had some minutes.
-

The Craig Revel Horwood of H&V.
-
Also Emery has said he tried things in games because he doesn’t always have time during training. So there might have been something that he was looking at for a future game that wasn’t apparent to us. Konsa at RB looked clumsy in games before we smashed Man City and beat Arsenal. Plus these games aren’t always pretty and it’s a big deal for these smaller teams. Just happy we got out with the result we needed and no obvious injuries.
-
He's used some of these games as training sessions in place of the training we will miss

I am imagining a massive flounce out of the room after the zero ratings were dished out
-
Their goal and result mattered to them more than us. All their team, subs and coaches celebrated the equaliser. Their supporters applauded our buses out of the ground. So a good night all around so far.
-
We're mixing with their Ultras in Rebal Bar
Shades of Bilbao here. Good lads!
-
Missed Olney' first goal walking up New St to the Town Hall to see Steeleye Span.

Agreed. We've rarely looked convincing with a second string/mixed bag of players in this competition which is disappointing but I imagine we'll see a different level of performance once we start again in March. For now we have to settle for job done and sitting third in the league.

The Craig Revel Horwood of H&V.
Darlings of the footballing dance floor, get ready to samba your way through the electrifying spectacle that unfolded on the hallowed Mostar turf! A symphony of kicks, twirls, and breathtaking pirouettes, as the two teams engaged in a tantalizing tango of tactics, all under the glittering disco ball of the stadium lights. Nicolo Zaniolo, a true Fred Astaire on the pitch, pirouetted past sleepy defenders with grace and flair on 61 minutes before chasseing the ball into the net.
However, the home team, determined not to be overshadowed, responded with a quickstep counter-attack that left defenders stumbling like amateurs in a OAP dance class. The match hung delicately in the balance, a pulsating dance-off with both teams vying for the title of injury time statue-staring champion.
As if atop a sparkling scissor-lift, tonight's performance elevated Villa into the stratospheric heights of the Europa Conference round of 16. A remarkable achievement given the obvious pedigree of the Herzegovina-based side.

Do they all go to the toilet at the same time?
-
At least Zaniolo broke his duck. Young keeper will learn a lot from it, thought he should have saved the equaliser. First half was shocking, couldn't face watching the second.

Does this mean there's no marks this week? That's very disappointing.

I’m certain the level of intensity we’ll approach these games in March will be entirely different. And will probably see us win the trophy. Oh Lord please….
-
Missed Olney' first goal walking up New St to the Town Hall to see Steeleye Span.
FML.
It's actually Alan Olney / Ian McInally
Top half is Olney Bottom half McInally
-
Are we likely to see as much rotation when we get to the knockouts? Torres, for example, played very little in these group stages. Are we likely to keep him benched in March?
I suppose it depends on if we sign anyone in January, and what impact injury/form has had on the squad at that point.
-
depends who we draw , there's still plenty of pub teams left in the hat

Good to hear. I wonder if they also saw a photo of some Villa heavyweights who had also made the trip over. I was like a movie poster for The Wanderers. Enjoy!

By being better than Martinez and Yashin combined. Or having Inspector Gadget arms.

I was thinking the stretchy rubbery fella out of the fantastic 4
-
Dr. Octopus might have got to it.
-
It was nice that O'Reilly got a run. Not many make their villa debut at a leisure centre in Bosnia.
-
Inspector Gadget would have saved it easily.
-
Martinez might have got to it. Might. And if he had, we'd all be saying that's why he's the best 'keeper in the world. It was a goal unsavable by almost the entirety of eternal sentient existence in this solar system or any other.
-
Young keeper will learn a lot from it, thought he should have saved the equaliser.
How?!
Done one of those scissor kicks
-
Overall disappointing but can understand why,no point running around and getting knackered unless it's really called for considering we got Brentford Sunday
-
The lads are currently over the English Channel, should be arriving in BHX at 12.35am.

If they get their skates on they'll catch last orders at Snobs
-
Some important players got rested. Others got vital minutes in their legs. Two youngsters got their debuts. Zaniola got a goal. We got the draw we needed to win the group. Objective achieved.
-
Bit of an odd game but we’ve done what we needed to do. Aside from a short spell away to AZ we’ve not got out of second gear in any of these group games and still progressed as group winners. Be interesting to see where the competition features in our priorities when it resumes in March.
-
It was nice that O'Reilly got a run. Not many make their villa debut at a leisure centre in Bosnia.
And not many Bosnians have graced the stage at Aston Villa Leisure Centre.
-
Not a great game as they sat deep in numbers but we got what we needed out of it to progress, so onwards & upwards...
-
The deflection did the goalkeeper, seems to happen more these days.
-
More than useful campaign - clearly Chambers and Dendonker need to be upgraded in terms of squad and Cash in terms of first team. Also helped Tielemans and Torres get up to speed and helped Digne to play his best stuff at Villa
Duran needs more time to develop. And Olsen wasn't missed.
-
It looked like Duran and Zaniolo had a bit of a ‘disagreement’ towards the end. I think it was an under hit pass which would have put Duran through on goal.
There did seem a fair amount of those, so maybe the playing surface wasn’t the best.
It was good to see it sorted out after, though.
-
The pitch was terrible, and played a part in a lack-lustre performance I reckon.
-

I only watched the first half but noticed several passes that just died. The pitch wasn't conducive to crisp passing
-
It was the pace of a training game for most of it though. Plenty of situations where we could have moved the ball quickly, but we stopped and slowed the game down. It was perfectly managed until we decided to have a mad last 10 minutes.

Zaniolo overhit the pass but Duran found himself about a mile offside, so nobody's best moment that really.

Duran wanted it passed earlier I think. Zaniola delayed it by which time Duran had drifted offside.

Good that Jhon was being demanding though.

more a case of Duran started his run way too early . He had a really poor game again
-
What a fantastic place Mostar is - a beautiful old town. We had tickets in the home end, turned out there were a few hundred other Villa fans in there. Beer served all match, sitting with the locals, most of them really friendly. Off to Sarajevo now for 2 days. Brilliant trip so far
-
I'm glad we got the point we needed to top the group we can look forward to next year and the last 16.
-
It's been great. Bars before the game were decent and dead cheap. Locals equally friendly this side of the bridge. Walking to the ground no bother, despite the local constabulary being kitted out for war. My good lady had bought a ticket in their end, but the stewards weren't bothered and she was able to come into the away end.
Surreal sort of away end and ground as I'm sure everybody has seen. Drinking in their bar after and their Ultras were spot on. Stumbled back to the hotel via a concert they had going on opposite the Christmas Market.
Beautiful town, enjoying a drink in the sun. This is possibly my favourite ever European away.
-
Pitch looked like a field and the less said about the pictures of the away end the better!
-
That all sounds fantastic fun. Glad you all enjoyed it.
-
Do they always play at that ground? The clip I saw recently seemed to have them at a place equally small but with more than one stand.
-
glad it passed off without any major crowd problems , those few reports of attacks pre-game made me a bit edgy about Villa fans in the home end and wider problems catching UEFA's eye
-
Sounds great for those who made the trip - early Christmas present topping the group.
Now back to 4 league matches all eminently winnable
-
Haven't heard anything about injuries to Olsen or Lenglet.

Have to disagree, mate.
I would say he had a frustrating evening.
He made some really good runs, but the way they set up when we were in possession made it awkward to pick him out.
As for him ‘start his run to early’ I think you’re the only one that thinks that.
-
It was an awful game to watch as it was clearly a case of giving a few players a run out whilst still doing enough to win the group. Difficult to judge any player really then on that basis, as nobody stood out.
-
Risso, agree entirely. Job done but I’m still trying to wake up. Even my walking football is quicker than that!!
-

Isn't Olsen on paternity leave?
-

It seemed to churn up really easily as well, the number of divots and bobbles as the game progressed was really noticeable.

They had a baby at the end of November so most likely.

You can tell by the way the rest of the family hold it that they don't trust him.

he definitely went too early, he was offside before Zaniolo had passed
-
I think he knew he was offside, but he'd dragged the defenders with him, and I think he was annoyed at Zaniolo for not playing in Diaby(?) behind him instead rather than giving it to him when he was clearly offside.
-
Im quite happy for them to be wanting to look at situations & try to learn from them, without prompting from the manager.
Zaniolos reaction was very calm, so I see no problem in the exchange...
-
Any footage of the Zan/Duran debate or the opposition staring Villa out of it for the last few mins? Sounds epic and moody.
-
Do they always play at that ground? The clip I saw recently seemed to have them at a place equally small but with more than one stand.
Yes, this is Zrinjski’s regular ground. There is another ground in Mostar wher Velez Mostar play that has 4 sides.
-

Can’t praise it enough. It was good to see you all but disappointed not to run into Darren Woolley😩
-
The Mostar official Youtube channel has somebody off here singing 'Every week we follow'. No names mentioned as I wouldn't want to further embarrass DBTW. ;)
-

It was a case of we were in no rush, as we were happy enough with score and I guess they didn’t want to risk losing, which was weird as they were already out.
-

And some of their fans told us it was the greatest result in their history😊😊 Locals were fab by the way, though we heard of a few people being picked off and having scarves and flags nicked in the old town. But generally they were chuffed to play us. Apparently the bloke who scored came from
Lower league so he’s just had the greatest moment of his life
-
Just seen the Villa On Tour/Max's video of his trip on Youtube. Well worth a watch, some nice clips of Mostar itself.
