Title: Aston Villa vs Arsenal Pre-Match
Post by: Bad English on December 07, 2023, 05:14:16 AM
Saturday, 9th December, 5:30pm UK time.

Arsenal were the last team to beat us at Villa Park. But the Tarquins are due a spanking from Emery's.well-oiled FTF machine. 3-1.

If the atmosphere was good last night, just think what it will be on a Saturday evening fuelled by an afternoon in the pub.

Win by one goal again.

I think that Emi may get another clean sheet so this could be another cagey 1-0.

A night to remember at VP.

We announce ourselves as serious contenders for the CL spots but also for the title.

Me and Brazilian Villan will be on here at 10pm just before MOTD starts wearing our sunglasses and smirking at another fantastic result

I really hope so.

I think both Unai and Emi will have that extra incentive on Saturday.  Not that they lack motivation normally, but I think they - and the rest of the team - know exactly what three points would mean on Saturday.  Genuine title contenders.

I know this much, if I was an Arsenal fan, I'd be shitting it.

I'd have taken a point before the City game, and I'd take a point here, but right now, who the fuck would bet against us?

I wish the game was today, and I bet the team do as well. That feeling that the Manager has engendered seems now to be galloping along, with the supporters just as much a part of it and we will take that into Saturday. Play anywhere near the level we did last night and Arsenal won't be able to live with us but, like last nights opponents they are an excellent team and this is a very difficult game.
I do feel that home advantage and the late kick off, rather festive time of the year in terms of imbibing will make for a crackling atmosphere and see us home.

3-2

As an aside I predicted 1-0 last night, it's a strange feeling to be bang on the money in a game like that...........

Tricky one. I think they'll all want to play, but Arsenal are going to have more pace on the wings and less physicality up front then Man City so possibly one for Cash to come back into, with Konsa back next to Torres?  Dunno, happy either way to be honest.

I watched their game v Luton and, like Man City (and Spurs and Brighton) they play a style that should suit us more than, say Nottingham Forest.  They are get-at-able.

We can beat anybody these days.

Get corners, stick Carlos next to their latest keeper. We have to score from a corner soon and watching how they conceded against Luton we should exploit this avenue to the full.

I’m not sure he operates that way. He played them last year at Villa Park and we played really despite losing in bizarre circumstances at the end. The game at the Emirates might be a little different but he’s such a professional that he will prepare as he always does. I want us to win for him because those entitled pricks didn't deserve him. Their loss is very much now our gain.

Who knows what will happen here, it's a completely different game to last night but we've just seen that we can subdue anyone at home and that Arsenal can be got at away from home.

Tiredness may well have an impact so we might see a couple of changes to freshen things up, not least I'd expect Konsa back in the middle and Cash in because the Arsenal attack is much suited to having that extra bit of pace and mobility in there, there isn't anyone where we'll need to physicality of Carlos.

The midfield is key for this one, if we can get some control in there we've got every chance of getting a record breaking win.

Arsenal aren't great away from home, 11 away games in all comps this season, only at Bournemouth have they won by more than 1. They're no mugs either but we can do these.

The xmas 89 double-header against Man Utd and Arsenal was epic.  I believe those games were only 48 hours apart.

The difference here is 4 games in 10 days is going to take it's toll, it has to.

Agree with Cash coming in Paul. Carlos was hreat last night, who wasnt, but i think he will freshen it up. Maybe even Moreno to give the excellent Digne a rest.
Last night is still sinking in with me, in terms of the level we played at. Can’t possibly guess at a result of score.

It's weird, we were sat in the Trinity Road stand - we'd moved there that season from the North Stand because my granddad's eyesight was going and he could at least see a bit of what was going on from there.  Anyway, that 'thud' followed by seeing Santa fall in what felt like slow motion ... it's still as fresh in my mind today as it was then.  Still unnerves me thinking about it.

I think we will start the same team (hard to find a reason to change anything - nobody dederve to be dropped) but substitutions coming earlier in the game due to tiered legs - like Diaby and JJ on for Youri and Leon after 60 th minutes.
Feeling is win now. Arsenal isnt that impressing watching them I think but still have the habit to win. Seems to me that Ødegaard do the same trick over and over again - must be a way to stop that. Saka is the man for them that usually win them games so Emery should do something there

I think Emery picks the best team for the opposition. If there's changes for this it's not because someone has been dropped, it's because he's identified something about Arsenal that he wants to exploit, or protect against. They concede goals, and their strikers aren't that much of a threat, but their midfield will need attention.

they do but that game will have taken a lot out of them also. Yes they won, and there will an emotional high and relief at the manner of their victory. But coming to a raucous Villa Park, they better hope they are not as careless at the back and in goal, because they could concede as many again without having the chance to score what they need to win. I'm not saying like Man City they will only have 2 shots on goal and no corners, but we won't be as easy to get chances against as Luton.

Even before last night I was always more confident about the City game than Arsenal, mostly because of the rest factor, but also I thought City under the lights with a raucous crowd wouldn't fancy it.

If they can somehow summon the energy again for Saturday then we are good enough to beat them,  but everything will have to align.

I went 1-1 for the City game so 1-1 again, Saka is a huge threat who is capable of destroying any defender and has a great finish but if we can get something from the game it would be fantastic.

Play like we did last night though and we could win comfortably.

Sounds obvious but the fact we won will work wonders for the summoning of energy. A loss after that effort would have been hard to recover from in just a few days. Barring any physical problems I'd imagine they're bouncing into training tomorrow.

As good as last night was there was still a small element of "panic" at times, especially when it came to taking chances. If we can play as well as we did yesterday AND keep our usual levels of calm, we could put 3 or 4 past these. If Luton can, we certainly can. The only question is how many will they put past us.

fast and sharp going forward but weak and uncertain at the back. The game could be anything from a battering either way to a really tight draw, impossible to predict for me.

I was the opposite really.  I know they have got injuries at the moment, but I just feel that Manchester City have a higher 'ceiling" of performance than Arsenal.  If Manchester City turn up and play at the maximum they ate probably the best club side in the world, whereas I feel Arsenal do have an air of vulnerability about them.

This’ll be tough, the level we hit on Wednesday was incredible and if we maintain it we’ll win. But they’re a good side and have had an extra day’s rest. But if we do win, this is a real statement of a week.

I saw some pundit the other day say Rice was their player of the season so far. Like for the whole of the league, not just Arsenal. I don't watch a lot of their games but on the BBC live text he never gets mentioned. You'd forget he even played for them if he didn't pop up with a last minute goal every now and then.

Everything now is about that top 4 or 5, which means that every win or loss has to be seen in that light. Under which criteria, then, it's been a spectacular week for us, as no matter what we'll come out of this massive double-header in the top 4 (many thanks to Eastenders and Corrie for yesterday).

But that doesn't mean that a win here would be a bonus, although there's an argument for that, as ultimately it's our games against the 'bottom 16' that will decide our final position. But at the top every single game matters, every single win just keeps your nose above the water, every single loss threatens to sink you (I'm still fucked off about Forest away!).

Which doesn't make this a must-win anymore than a freebie. But it's how we have to think now. Win as often as possible. Win all the time.

With nearly half the season gone, we're 3rd, above last year's champions and a point behind the leaders if we can beat them tomorrow. We HAVE to start believing we can win this. We can, and do beat anybody, nay everybody at home. If we can improve our away form then there's no reason we can't push it all the way. If we fall short, then if we've got the compensation of Champions League football, it will have been an incredible year.

Agreed.

With our away form (which is slightly misleading given we've 3 of the top 7 away but only 1 at home) we can't really rely on getting more than 27-28 points on the road. That means we need to be aiming for 45 at home. We can do that, we're on course for it, but it means we have to go into every home game looking to win.

The fixture list is pretty exciting too. Away to Man City and Arsenal and home to Liverpool are all in April or later. Untill the very end of the season there always seems like there will be a little run of two or three Lutons / Fulhams / Sheffield Utds round the corner to play ourselves back into form if you have a dodgy Forest style defeat to recover from.

Have we beaten them at Villa Park in the league since the parachuting Santa debacle?

Personally, I'm going for a win. Smash these tarquin twats into oblivion.

We're Aston Villa and we're going to win the league (*one day soon).

Yes of course. The Trez goal to help keep us up first year back, then the year after with the early Ollie goal.

Oh yeah, of course we have - Memory not what it used to be!
That santa fixture (*bloody awful accident aside) was an absolute belter that sticks in the mind though. 2-0 down, then turn em over 3-2 in second half!

Not sure my nerves or extinction threatened hairline could cope with that this weekend mind!

There were people under the Holte at half-time hoping the game would be abandoned.

Im with you. But woke up today with law of averages running round my head. We win tomorrow and without any disrespect to Sheff Utd and Burnley, we should be beating them. That would be 17 home wins in a row, tearing up any records throughout the clubs entire history. I mean feck me that would be beyond insane. So law of averages, we may draw tomorrow

Finding it difficult to predict this one. Two evenly matched squads. Could really boil down to who takes their chances on the day.

Thankfully, we have a 'rock' in goal, they are likely to have a 'nervous wreck' in goal. Also, our manager more tactically 'tuned in' and we have an ever improving 'bag of tricks' on the bench to switch thing around (if need be).

For these reasons, 1-0 to the Villa. Time for a Tielemans or McGinn rocket.

Wimbledon was a couple of months later. Game after these was a 3-0 away win at Chelsea on New Years Day I think.

Ah, ok. I had it in my head it was a game or two after. T'was a long time ago though.

My only other memory of that Arsenal game was Tony Adams being in prison at the time but again, that might have been a different one.

Remember it all well, I was 15. Grew up in Hockley and used to get the number 8 bus to Aston and walk through the park and used to stand on the left side of the Holte as you face the pitch. For the Arsenal game i got to the ground and realised I’d lost my money en route, so had to go home, gutted. Was at the boxing day mauling of Man Utd and at that point that was the most rocking I’d ever seen Villa Park, even the Trinity were roaring.

My older brother was a lifelong Chelsea supporter and he managed to get me a ticket for the away there on New Years Day, another mauling. On the drive back to Brum we were getting reports on the radio of the later kick off game where Forest drew with Liverpool. At that point on the way back I really started to believe we could win the league.

Today feels massive now.

Platt was sensational in those two games 89/90.

Buzzing for tonight, what an occasion it should be. How many years have we waited for a team like this to come together?!

I wonder if Cash will come back in tonight to mark their left winger? More than likely be the same starting XI.

It may have been. Spurs was a midweek game (I think Ormondroyd got one goal) so it's possible Wimbledon was the following game.

Watkins X2 .
Douglas Luiz penalty

The last of the 4 matches in 10 days. And a real test. I'm confident Emery will have us set for the win!

I’m nervous about this, although I was on Wednesday night too.

I think we might be tired, and we might lose 3-0.

Also I think we could play like we did on Wednesday, with pomp and aplomb and get a win too!

It’s hard to remember sometimes this is Emery Villa, a new and exciting and well drilled unit, and not the old Gerrard Villa.

I will say we win, 2-1. Ollie and Pau for us, Rice for them.

Not looking forward to Brentford away now. :(

Their record at home at the moment is amazing, and the players will be feeling confident. I’m not saying Arsenal deserve to lose, they also are in great form at the moment. Just to make it more interesting, I want Aston Villa to win"

They’re attacking a lot better than Citeh at the moment, and Martinelli and Saka will create problems. But they also look a bit shaky at the back. We’ll need to hit the levels we did on Wednesday to win - and be wary as they always score late. Hopefully if that happens we’re already 4-0 up.

If they play like they did against Luton then we should stick 4 or 5 past them. I wonder were they being a bit complacent thinking oh it's only Luton, or are they just wobbly back there. Raya is definitely wobbly, and if we can get off as many shots as we did against Man City he'll be under a lot of pressure.

Why do people think the team will be tired? We can make changes, Arsenal have also just played a difficult game and our team will have ha plenty of rest. They'll be playing on adrenaline now. This isn't any old league game where tiredness can set in. The momentum and occasion will see them through and we'll win.

My ode to Emery. Emotional.

When we found ourselves in times of trouble,
Nasar Sawiris came to see
Sacking with such wisdom, Stevie G

And in our hour of darkness, he is landing Unai Emery
Coaching genius wisdom, Emery
Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
Always so demanding, Emery!

And when our broken-hearted fans living in this world could see
Unai has a system, Emery
For we saw at Villa how he started, beating Man U scoring 3
Made it into a fortress, Emery !

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
He came with the answers. Emery!

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
Coaches with words of wisdom, Emery

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
Europe is his kingdom. Emery

And when we see the team playing, there is thrill, delight, we shine. Can't disagree!
Happy that players follow Emery!

I wake up like we were crowned v Munich, Unai bringing hope to me.
Coaching Genius Wisdom, Emery

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
Europe is his kingdom. Emery

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery.
He has all the answers, Emery!

Emery, Emery, Emery, Emery
Coaches with such wisdom, Emery!

I guess Emery will look to pack centre areas with a solid set of Midfielders that did so well on Wednesday. As we can be vulnerable to being outdone out wide Arsenal are going to look for wing play and switches of play to Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, as they carry a large portion of Arsenal's main attack.

There could be plenty of 1v1 opportunities for those two players so I'm concerned if Cash is put in the team. But I wonder if Emery may use him on the right midfielder again and hope he's managed to learn his instructions.
Arsenal can get down the sides when they move passes quickly.
Jesus will also cause problems with his movement so I rather have Konsa and Carlos and Pau.
I'm hoping the Arsenal players will continually get caught offside and get frustrated.

Taking my little boy (6yo) to his first game for that Burnley one. He's really excited about it ... to the extent that half the kids in his class at school have been converted to the path of righteousness.

But yeah, recommend membership if you're buying tickets. It works out extortionate for us since we can only get to a handful of games a season, but it's worth it to get a bunch of seats together with me, my dad, one of the kids (have an ambiguously named child membership), and sitting in the same stand at my uncle, cousin & his family when they go

I'll be surprised if Tielemens is dropped. Arsenal's midfield is far better than the makeshift Man City one we faced on Wednesday evening, and I think he's better at dropping a bit deeper to add numbers in there than Diaby.  If Diaby plays, it'll be at the expense of Bailey - which would be a bad call based on current form, but who knows how the players have recovered over the last two days?

Arsenal's midfield is far better than the makeshift Man City one we faced on Wednesday evening, and I think he's better at dropping a bit deeper to add numbers in there than Diaby.  If Diaby plays, it'll be at the expense of Bailey - which would be a bad call based on current form, but who knows how the players have recovered over the last two days?
Bailey looked bollocksed when he came off Wednesday. Time for Diaby to step up

Tielemans and Bailey on the club match graphic. So.... McGinn, Luiz, Kamara, Tielemans, Bailey starting. No clues to back 4 though.
do they definitely start then if they are on the match graphic ? Does Villa Admin have a line into the Sultans office

I think most weeks the players on the graphic are in the starting 11. It's not 100% but it's been the case the last few weeks. We'll see.

The graphic was correct.

Given they're the ones that make the team announcement graphics, they probably just get the actual info.
