Title: Villa v Fulham - Pre-match thread
Post by: Rigadon on November 10, 2023, 08:58:50 AM
2pm Sunday 12th, Villa Park

We need to get back on it in the league before yet another infuriating international break.  Apparently if we win it breaks a home wining streak record that's 4 decades old?!  The 3 points are more important though.

Fulham? About as grey a team as it's possible to imagine. Fairly solid generally, find it hard to score regularly, difficult to get excited about playing them.

A game to go to, not enjoy that much, but feel better for having ground out a narrow win.

1-0 to us.

Have a bad feeling about this. We toiled against them last time they came here in April, Ty's header from a corner was as good as it got which thankfully was enough but I can just see Silva setting-up to frustrate again.
1-1 and the home league record left with a dented fender.

After losing to probably the worst Man united team in premier league history, next game a visit to fortress Villa Park deep joy, it’s been a funny season so far, losing Mitrovic to the sand pit league nearly losing Palhinha to Bayern Munich, haven’t played particularly well in the games I’ve watched, but were only a couple of points worse off where we were last season and in the first quarter final of the league cup for 20 years, we have 3 forwards who would struggle to score regularly in the championship, hoping Vinicius becomes Vinicius junior mark two but I doubt it, the only plus for me is that the 3 promoted sides look poor, infact they remind me of the Fulham teams of 2018 and 2020, as to the game I’m hoping your a bit tired after Thursday’s game, we’ll be quite solid without any goal threat, hope you continue have a good season after Sunday of course

We're now into the thick part of the season with games coming thick, fast and pathetically often given the way the PL have organised the calendar in December. Coping with Thursday/Sunday is a job in itself but we seem to be ok, the front end of the season was loaded with injuries so we were due a bit of breathing space in that respect.

A home game against Fulham is straightforward on paper but as each game passes, particularly at home, the pressure increases. Expectation from us and the media, the 1983 record being mentioned along with talk of CL qualification and our record under Emery constantly being compared to the very best teams in this league.

But I really believe the Manager and the players are thriving on this and the odd aberration of the like we saw last week will be just that, odd.

3-1

Fulham are awful. Their defence goes missing a lot of time, and I think Villa could be in for a rout.
Another 3+ goals on the cards. I'll double it for a 6-0
Scorers:
Watkins or Diaby Hat Trick.
The other with a brace
Luiz with a Penalty.

Based on what we've seen of team selection so far my assumption is that if Mings wasn't injured we obviously wouldn't have signed Lenglet, and Torres would be playing the European games with Carlos. I think Torres was bought with the intention of eventually phasing Mings out, but he would have had a more gradual introduction to the Prem, and at some point he'd become first choice there. But probably not until next season, or if we exited Europe early he might have mixed things up in the 2nd half of the season.

2-0; no rout here.
I really would like to see Emery play Bailey on the left, with Diaby and Watkins upfront (Bailey's pace is rarely seen when he plays on the right because he's almost-always looking to cut inside.). That way, we can get McGinn back on his favoured right side in midfield. Bailey on the right is excruciating most of the time (until he finally tries crossing with his right foot which isn't as bad as he obviously thinks it is).

They did exactly what they set out to do. They shit out the top scorers in the division whilst scoring twice themselves.

It may not have been attractive, but it was most certainly effective, and for that I'd say they did excellently.

I know what you mean, but I can't agree. They were functional and we had an off day.  Play that game another 9 times and we wouldn't lose many more of them I don' think.

Anyway, I expect Fulham to try the same tactics, so fingers crossed we're a bit less encouraging at the back and more incisive in front of goal.

It's going to be similar to the last three matches in terms of how the opponents play, fingers crossed we have enough to do the business.

I think they finally finished La Sagrada Familia this year, didn't they ?
Think they did.

Probably marks me out as the uncultured moron that I am, but I went there about 20 years ago and thought it was shit. I mean, obviously they've put a load of effort in to it and that, but it really wasn't my cup of tea at all.

Bound to be a disappointment after St. Giles.
Isn't everywhere? :)

It's got a big mural of the devil getting medieval on some sinner's arses - that's my favourite bit.

It's going to be similar to the last three matches in terms of how the opponents play, fingers crossed we have enough to do the business.

Yeah, we're becoming top six whingers too. Which is nice.

Hopefully we see a big reaction after last Sundays debacle .

It wasn't a debacle. What nonsense.

It is nonsense. No-one seems to mention that Forest were excellent.
They weren’t.
We were poor.

Saying Forest were excellent is as much of a nonsense as calling it a debacle. They were poor, we were worse.

They did exactly what they set out to do. They shit out the top scorers in the division whilst scoring twice themselves.

It may not have been attractive, but it was most certainly effective, and for that I'd say they did excellently.
Wow, your bar for excellent is ridiculously low. You'd be a great boss to work for

Stop being a div , they really didn't , they were functional we gifted them 2 goals and fannyed about with the ball a lot .

No they were not poor. You’re up a gum tree. They broke quickly and effectively and did their homework, stifling us. Their centre backs won everything. Two teams actually take to the pitch. No, they weren’t Man City ‘excellent’ but they were the best they could be, or very close to it.

Seem to remember these lot coming to Villa Park last season and sitting very deep.  Expect more of the same tomorrow and a bit of a grind.

For what it's worth, I thought Forest started brightly but weren't great overall.  That second goal right after half time was a killer as it allowed them to play to their strengths.

We lost, it's gone, time to move on.

It would be excellent to go into the break with a win, then come back with JJ and Moreno more likely to feature.

Massive game, hopefully we can start quickly as we have done many times to get that early, settling goal.

We'd have been hailing a performance like that if we'd beat say Man City playing the way Forest did last week.
We'll get beat occasionally. It's the way it is.

I'm actually more nervous about today than our next game, away at Spuds. Hopefully, it's just the pessimistic Villa fan of old in me, and today turns out to be a formality, but with the way results went yesterday, potentially allowing us to overtake Spurs when we face em, I'm worried we'll shoot ourselves in the foot like we did last week.

There's a high chance of a clean sheet for Martinez
Fulham offer a very small threat going forward.
They are the joint lowest scorers with 9 goals in 11 matches.
3rd lowest for shots per game away from home.

Fulham are awful. Their defence goes missing a lot of time, and I think Villa could be in for a rout.
Another 3+ goals on the cards. I'll double it for a 6-0
Scorers:
Watkins or Diaby Hat Trick.
The other with a brace
Luiz with a Penalty.

That's quite a tasty prediction this week, FV. Looking forward to seeing if your studying and research has proven fruitful again.

I think we will win but not quite 6-0.

Either way, FTF  8)
The pattern goes 4, 3, 6 .

4 v Everton
3 v Palace
6 v Brighton
4 v West Ham
3 v Luton
?6 v Fulham
And 13 home wins !!!

Hopefully we'll actually score today, whereas last week we could have played till Christmas without doing so!

I'll be optimistic for you: 2-1 to us and Ollie for both and Emi to redeem himself in the league.

Many happy returns for tomorrow!  :)

A routine, uneventful, pretty forgettable 2-0 win, continuing our run of home wins but ending our 100% record this season of having scored 3+ goals in every home game. Fulham seem a bit of a non-entity this season; I've barely noticed them.

Suspect they will come for a 0-0 or hope to nick somehing via a set piece.
Up to us to be on the front foot which is always a bit of a concern

These useless never-finished-new-stand London fannies are going to get totally fucking funeralled.

8-0

Zaniolo, Zaniolo, Zaniolo, Bailey, Watkins, Watkins, Watkins, Konsa.

We'll be laying goals all over them.

I like Fulham well enough, they'd be a contender for the coveted 'If I Really Had to Support a Team Down Here' trophy. So I'll let them off with a 4-0 light tonking.

Fulham are woven into our history in some bad moments but maybe long term for the good.
We got beat 2-0 at home in an infamous fa cup tie - think was one of Little’s last matches ?
Losing the play off final - gutting though it was at the time, saved us from the slippery owner at the time.
Losing 3-0 last season in probably one of the worst performances in memory, a penalty, an own goal, a sending off. Goodbye SG, hello Emery.
