Title: UECL Aston Villa v AZ Alkmaar pre-match
Post by: olaftab on November 05, 2023, 11:51:19 PM
Thursday 9 November KO 8:00 PM
Venue: Villa Park

OK time to move on to UECL and match against AZ. We dispensed with them easily in Alkmaar about 10 days ago and I see no reason why we won’t send them back disappointed on Thursday.

We have bounced back from defeat before under this Manager so there is no reason that we won't do it again. Yesterday was rather like Newcastle/Liverpool in that a number of players looked off it, or at least under par. Where you can carry one or two, any more than that and it makes life difficult. I don't think that will be the case on Thursday and there will changes. I'm optimistic, we won't win 'em all, but we'll win plenty.

2-1

No need to make that many changes - we need to win this and i would start the same side as yesterday and say they owe us a performance.

Win this, really strengthens our position in the league, then maybe a few tweaks for Fulham

Olsen....jeez Tim. Cash seemed to limp off at the weekend so will be interesting to see how we cover him on Thursday. One of Konsa or Chambers I guess. We bullied Alkamaar a couple of weeks back but our last two league games have been a bit flat so I think this will be a lot tougher.

Martinez
Konsa, Carlos, Lenglet, Moreno
Luiz, Kamara
Bailey, Tielemans, McGinn
Watkins

The reason I don't think we'll see Olsen is partly because Emi made such a big deal of qualifying for Europe. I mean, I know all the players did, but he gives the air of one who really really wants to play these games.
Title: Re: UECL Aston Villa v AZ Alkmaar pre match
Post by: AV84 on November 07, 2023, 03:55:38 PM
Why would he play Olsen now when he hasn't featured at all in the group stage?

The only way we see Olsen in Europe again this season is a) Martinez is injured, b) we've already safely qualified and the last match is irrelevant, or, c) worst case scenario, we can't qualify and the last group match is irrelevant.

Lenglet and Tielemans are European Conference regulars and that makes sense given their European experience

I think Konsa and Moreno will play full backs

He definitely won't play Olsen. Think he'll go with the line up from the away match, injuries permitting.
So that's Martinez , Cash, Carlos , Lenglet Digne, Kamara, Luiz, McGinn, Tielemans,  Bailey, Watkins.

As I mentioned in the away thread, as strong a team as possible and go for the win. And then hope results in the other leg fall in our favour. (Draw would be best). Then beat Legia at home better then 3-2 and we should be fine.

Us loads-1 Them

Will be my first Villa match in what seems like aaaaaages.  Genuinely think the UECL is our best shot at silverware this season, and we should go all in for it.

Definite 'no' to Olsen for me, unless it's circumstances beyond our control.  I'm not as anti-Olsen as some on here, but it's such a drop-off from Martinez to him ...

435 tickets left, with beat availability in the upper Holte where unused season tickets have gone on sale.

Assuming they've sold out, capacity will be around 40,000, so a big crowd to be on.

I was surprised they didn't sell out when we played them.

Also note that you can purchase tickets in the upper away end for the Fulham game.

I'm just excited it's European football at Villa Park!
That 545pm time would be nice time for me if I was attending as a kick off time suitable in winter for weather, and regards any safety concerns and travel. Excuse the selfishness tone of the post.
I'd love to go and experience the European night atmospheres but I don't care to be out late nights, and travelling back to London on trains without assistance is out of the question for me.
And I'm unable to stay over on this occasion as that's what I like to do before and  made a weekend of it. The Club have been able to accommodate when I request attendance and  given a great location and seating arrangements as have couple of other Prem teams with contacts I have.

So tomorrow I make do with watching on the screen, cheering on and being able to pause and evaluate things while still staying warm and safe indoors away from the trouble that regrettably still exists in and around football matches. Especially these European ones. It may be only a minority but it's sad.

Fingers crossed that by spring and the latter stages, I'll be able to attend a major match! That's my hope.
Best wishes to all attending tomorrow
Glory to Villa!

This is quite a big game in terms of this competition.  If us and Warsaw win or even if they draw tomorrow night then it puts us in a strong position with us only really needing a point from the last two games to qualify out of the group.

A draw wouldn't be the worst result for them, so I imagine they will try and keep it tight.

Emery says he had doubts over tomorrow's starting 11. He's not clear on who he wants to play, but it's not the players he has doubts over, he wants to be "clinical" in his decision.

Sounds good, I guess?

Cash.                Konsa.      Torres.    Moreno

                           Kamara.   Luiz

     McGinn                           Tielemans

                                                   Diaby

                             Watkins

3-1 (Watkins, Diaby, Tielemans)

I would be going as strong as it is possible to go tomorrow night without risking anyone with knocks etc.  Would probably look at bringing Moreno on rather than starting him.

It could be a key game in terms of the competition and one we really could do with winning.

Tielemans was great in the away leg. If he does start him I just hope he doesn't do a disappearing act. Time for him to step up and force his way in or he could be on the casualty list come the January transfer window.

Apparently there has been a cheese market in Alkmaar since 1365,
If they were english they would probably be morris dancers. Wankers.

The match is on TNT Sports the old BT Sports.
You can get full TNT Sports access if you have an EE mobile phone contract.
You need the allocate your Inclusive Extra to the TNT option.
Easy to do.
Then you watch TNT for free on your TV via a stick etc.
You watch TNT on the Discovery + app.

You also then get the TNT Premier League matches and all the European games.

Their away kit is navy shorts with navy/blue shirts. Their 3rd kit is like a pale grey colour with black sleeves. Unless they're wearing that and our white shorts are deemed to clash, but wouldn't the away team have to change to accommodate that?

Edit - looking at their kits, they're probably a pretty good indication of what we'd get if we end the Castore deal and went with Nike.

Home team almost always makes the changes as in theory, they have all their kit options handy where the travelling team is limited. I think it is a ref's decision on the day on clashes like shorts / socks etc.

Makes sense if it's a last minute decision, but surely they'd look at their kits, look at ours, and say we'll wear the away one. Unless it's all mind games! 😄

I think UEFA are a bit picky about what classes as dark shorts and light shorts. There was no real reason for Villa to wear dark shorts with the third kit in Alkmaar but presume the usual ones were classed as "light" and would clash with their white shorts.

Alkmaar are wearing all grey tonight so Villa are being made to choose the "dark" option again. Not sure why they have made the home team change but who says UEFA need to do things that make sense?

We used to regularly wear our away kit at home in the UEGA Cup back in the 90s.

That was a rule back then, wasn't it? IIRC Uefa bought it in in the early to mid nineties, if kits clashed the home team changed.

Don't get why UEFA do back to back matches, the logical order for us would be Warsaw, Mostar and Alkmaar.

I like back to back games. I have read that back in day around Xmas there use t be home and away fixtures against the same team a day or so apart.

There's a video of him on the club YouTube at Villa Park talking about his time at Villa and how excited was when Villa were drawn in the same group as AZ.

Often with some strange results. For example, in 1935-36 we beat Huddersfield 4-1 on Christmas Day and lost to them by the same score on Boxing Day.

Think I’d go with

                           Martinez

Cash.                Konsa.      Torres.    Moreno

                           Kamara.   Luiz

     McGinn                           Tielemans

                                                   Diaby

                             Watkins

3-1 (Watkins, Diaby, Tielemans)
  👍

Waited 'till they'd all gone. I think the one I heard was for the stragglers.

I wonder of they do an announcement in that terrible burr that Stoke fans have when they go to the Sty or the unremarkable industrial unit on the Birmingham Road in Handsworth?

However half a dozen girls standing on platform 8 wearing next to nothing was going too far to make them feel at home.
