UTV!

Fantastic team performance, we look so comfortable and play some great football.
-
Fun European night with a +3 GD. Good work.
-
We even funeralled AZee in 2023, the Villa boys from Aston...... 8)
-
Excellent overall. Last 15-20 we seemed to switch off and the goal gave them belief. But by then the job was done. I'm sure Emery will pick through the areas to improve but all in all, very solid indeed.
-
Great stuff, a fine win with some back up players, just what we needed to quell some doubts. Chuffed for all those out there as well.
Paul Dempsey commentator on TNT.
must be Villa.
Savage said "you watch a lot of Villa, er, a lot of football".🤣
Knew all about Emery improving the players, spoke about the improvement after 12 months etc etc.
-
Tielemans motm
Thought the referee was excellent
-
This thread hasn't been put with the stickies yet. Emery out.
-
Just need a draw tonight with the others to give us some room at the top.
-
Unreal! Thank You Unai Emery.
Levels above! That was the Emery euro ball performance we've been expecting. It was fantastic.
Tielemans super and player of the match
I think having Watkins and Luiz starting and Tielemans and Bailey on form made all the difference.
Absolutely beautiful.
Up The Villa!
-
The perfect European away performance. I even refuse to get upset by them scoring.
-
Couldn’t watch this one so if anybody has a link to the highlights / goals don’t be shy! Sounds like a great performance. It’s certainly a great result!
-
Subs were interesting. You'd think at 4-0 up after 60 minutes we'd have taken a few guys off a bit sooner than we did. But, as mentioned before the game, I don't think we can currently cope with too many changes.
Still, Torres, Konsa, and Diaby all had a bit of a rest. I wouldn't be surprised if Digne and Luiz get a rest against Forest, one way or another.
-
Lovely stuff - well done again. Great to see Youri settling in and Leon continue on his streak.
-

Would one of them winning not be better? A draw puts them both one win from overtaking us.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Digne and Luiz get a rest against Forest, one way or another.
I'd rest them against Luton, meself. Only question would be who rfeplaces Digne.
-
I thought Tielemans and Langlet were excellent and everybody else was very good.
The whole performance was very efficient and enjoyable.
-
Really impressive result away from home in Europe. Tielemans looked a lot better being played further forward he was excellent, as was Bailey. Thought Llengelet had a decent game as well. Great stuff.
-

Luton, Forest, then Fulham. I'd take their suspension in any of those games over the ones coming next. Could do with Digne hanging on until Moreno can play though.
-
2 x 4-1 wins in a week that on paper were tricky game
Jeez. I love where we’re at
-
Masterclass. Again.
-
Apparently, that's AZs first home defeat in 29 Euro matches!
-
Really we should be winning every game in this group, but that was quite the performance. Dominant and well organised and ruthless in front of goal.
Tielemens man of the match for me with Bailey not far off. Also thought Carlos was good today and Lenglet had a decent game. He slotted in nicely and was very neat and tidy. He was a little more incisive with his passing forward than we saw in the last game. He's no Pau on that front but good to see him occasionally looking forward to break lines.
Only one that really worries me at the moment is Zaniolo. His decision-making hasn't been the best since he arrived and occasionally very lackadaisical. If feels like megs aside (tried and failed with one today), he's lacking the tricks and acceleration to beat people. The betting case is only going to make it tougher on him. I really hope he gets a goal from nowhere on Sunday and it just ignites something. We've seen from occasional flashes he could potentially unleash a screamer.
Let's get qualification tied up asap and it takes a bit of pressure off if we're in more pressing need to rotate.
-
Apparently, that's AZs first home defeat in 29 Euro matches!
West Ham won there in May.
-
Winning 4-1 away from home against a side doing excellently in their domestic league, and who haven't lost a European game at home in ages.
Yes, we took our foot off the gas for the last 20 mins or so, but if there's no need to be going full pelt, don't do it, that's how we conserve energy for the weekend.
Great to see Tielemans playing so well, too.
-
Anther game without a clean sheet. Must try harder.
-
I thought Tielemans and Langlet were excellent and everybody else was very good.
The whole performance was very efficient and enjoyable.
Bailey was excellent too, brilliant goal and two assists. His best game for the club on a night I thought he had to deliver.
Martinez 7, Cash 6, Carlos 5, Lenglet 8, Digne 7, Kamara 6, Luiz 7, Bailey 9, McGinn 8, Tielemans 9, Watkins 7.
-
Agree that Teilemans was MOTM but special mention to Lengelet as i thought he was excellent.
Watkins did nothing but scored which is fine.
Very assured performance.
Although thier goal was frustrating to concede it was a great finish.
Onwards and upwards now I'm sure SUE is watching Luton videos already.
The guy is a genius
-
-
Give them an absolute rocket for switching off for their goal and the next 10 minutes, not good enough!
Aside from that it was just beautiful, so controlled, dominant, patient and incisive. AZ are no jokers and we played them off the park. Tielemans, Bailey, Carlos all excellent, probably Tielemans PoTM as he was coming from a lower base level, really hope this is where he starts to become the player we all want him to be.
-
I thought Tielemans and Langlet were excellent and everybody else was very good.
The whole performance was very efficient and enjoyable.
Yeah that’s about right for me. Lenglet got better as it went on, I’d also mention Bailey who was excellent too, a goal and 2 assists.
-
Give them an absolute rocket for switching off for their goal and the next 10 minutes, not good enough!
Given Emery was able to find "fault" with Luiz's performance at the weekend, I'm sure he's got extensive notes on that 10 minute period to be gone over on the flight home.
-
AZ’s home record ripped up. Impressive performance.
-
Apparently, that's AZs first home defeat in 29 Euro matches!
West Ham won there in May.
It was mentioned it was their first home loss in 29 European matches. Guess the commentators got it wrong.
-

Yes I’d put Bailey in there too. A mature performance from him.
-
Superb performance, all played well, Tielemans and Bailey the pick of them
-
Best thing for me after the result is Tielemans and Lenglet both playing so well as we'll need that strength in depth over the next few months. Bailey turning up for an away game too, it's all good.
-
Unai looked really angry walking off at the end.
-
Unai looked really angry walking off at the end.
Oh I'm sure there were aspects he was not happy with.
-
Unai looked really angry walking off at the end.
I think Chambers had dropped the mother of all farts in the dugout just before the end of the game ....
-
Bus situation as dire as Warsaw.
-
I think we're finding our European feet. It's not easy with our injury list to juggle the team for Thursday nights with one eye on the weekend. Those coming in tonight have stepped up a level and Unai has now found the right balance.
Big step in the right direction. Well done lads, a very professional performance against a team that are extremely strong especially at home.
-
Tremendous result. Well done Villa. Safe journey home all.
-
To be fair, 6 or 7 have now turned up, which is a lot better than Warsaw.
-
Not happy at all
-
Fucking ecstatic!!!!!!!!!!!
-
A football special out of Alkmaar.
-
A football special out of Alkmaar.
I wish they’d just get on with it.
-
Tielemans announces himself, he's a confidence player it seems and now can start pushing for a league start and hopefully take some pressure off Dougie and kamara there. Lenglet quitley good, konsa-esque. Definite questions about Carlos still, unfortunately.
What a team performance though, pounced on mistakes and had a period of 10 minutes looking many levels above them. What a time to support the villa
-
I was working so missed the game but it's great to see some of the new players are now getting up to speed. Bailey seems to be in the best form he's been since he joined.
-
Also, yet again no mention of our game on guardian but a full west ham report.

Good.

On the train back to Amsterdam. Very good night and Tielemans man of the match from what I saw on the pitch. More later.

Excellent stuff, enjoy your night in the 'Dam! Don't be surprised if you run into Russell as he made the trip despite not having a ticket.
-
Ah yes, really happy for the Villa fans who travelled to the Netherlands. What a trip!

Isn’t that just like Russell😂 Tell him I will see him in the Old Sailer down the strip (literally)
-
We are really on to something here. Excellent away performance in the toughest fixture in the group.
Tielemans was excellent tonight. Shout outs also to Lenglet who showed why Barcelona once decided to buy him and to Bertie T for a ridiculous attempt at a flick lay off near the end that made me smile.
-
Also, yet again no mention of our game on guardian but a full west ham report.
I wouldn’t bother putting any stock in what the guardian think when it comes to Villa. Every time we have a great win and performance they have that complete d*ckhead Jordan Bryan on their podcast to rubbish it and the main presenter (spurs fan, naturally) thinks that only bad teams lose to us.
-
Isn’t that just like Russell😂 Tell him I will see him in the Old Sailer down the strip (literally)
Will do, but think he may have the kids with him. Apparently it's been a decent away day there, even for those that didn't make it to Alkmaar.
-
I love us winning substantially and comprehensively and like it's normal. Well I ever get used to this? Could I? I don't know. I'd like to try though.
-
Looked like a tricky tie on paper, but that was a very comprehensive win. We look very threatening going forward this season and have scored another four tonight.
Some of the fringe players got some needed game time which was good and we were able to make changes well before the end to give some of the starters a break.
Looks like it was a great trip for those who went.
-
Not happy at all
U ok hun?
You missed his next post
-
I’m still not adjusted to Emery Villa because even at 4-1 I’m still thinking “we could do with another one here to be sure”.
Important win in the context of the group. A defeat here and we’d have been on the back foot going into the final three games, whereas now we’re in control.
-
Just need a draw tonight with the others to give us some room at the top.
Would one of them winning not be better? A draw puts them both one win from overtaking us.
I mentioned in the pre-match but we needed no messing around for these two matches against AZ. Put out a strongest side in both (which tbf, he pretty much did tonight at least #insights.) and get the wins. Then we can see which of the other two matches us. If we win our next against AZ at home as well, and the other teams play each other twice, the best result would be two draws. That would leave us 4 points clear of them and 6 on AZ and we can probably get through with easily from that position and key players can be rested.
If they win one and lose one, it puts them both three points behind us but we also have to play them both again so one more match with main team should do it at home. If one wins both, then we also only need to get the one point to qualify so could rest players again.
So that is why I stated a draw for both tonight is best.
-
Fantastic result, Langlet really impressed me
If I am critical, I wish we would stop being so obsessed with tipy tapy at the back.
3 times Kamara lost the ball and we could have conceded, not for the first time this season.
However have to keep pinching myself wondering when it will go tits up as I am an obsessive Villa doubter.
Roll on Luton and six more to the tally
-
Off to that Susies Bar. Anybody who wants an ale come and tap me up.

Legia 2-1 up.
They'll fancy their chances considering they've still got two home games left after this of topping the group.
It's important we get 1st as I think group winners bypass a play off round and don't resume until the middle of March so that will ease our fixture load in February.
-
38 goals in 15 matches this season (if my maths are working.) 18 conceded though.
-
from villanews:
Matty Cash – 4
Contributed tellingly to the Aston Villa attack throughout the game but was actually handed the worst average score of any Villa player [via SofaScore] at a dreadful 6.1/10 and his underlying stats prove why, winning just three of his eight duels at a worrying success rate of 38%, lost possession 11 times and completed just one dribble given he’s expected to provide Villa with the width on the right.
-
Did Cash steal your wife or something?
-

Yeah, Legia Warsaw are winning at the moment. We beat AZ at home in the next round and Legia Warsaw beat the Bosnians then the group is pretty much done in terms of qualification. We could even afford to draw out in Bosnia and still top the group if we beat Legia Warsaw in the last game.
As above, would be very handy to.finish top and miss that play off round, which I presume would be against a team coming out of the Europa League?
-
Loved Emi Martinez waiting ages for them to press him. Quite right too. They were the home team.

Aha….so he must have a 9 year old as well the 2014 special😊
-
Slightly concerned we only had 5 shots at goal, yes all on target but the one of them was Bailey's effort saved for Watkins to put in so four chances really. Clinical definitely but normally we carve out a lot more chances.
-
Did Cash steal your wife or something?
To be fair I thought Cash was poor defensively tonight
-

Their two forwards were telling each other to go but no one would. Opposition fans whistle about time wasting but balls in play it’s up to their players to do something about it.
-
Same points, but we're second to Legia Warsaw? We have a better goal difference (+ 3 to their +1)? Different rulings or what?
-
Shame Legia won as they are above us on the table on I assume head 2 head. So we definitely have to funeral them in the home match 4 something.
-

Result against each other!
-
Did Cash steal your wife or something?

Yea he was easily beaten a few times.
-
Is it not something to do with the fact that they have beaten us?
-
Same points, but we're second to Legia Warsaw? We have a better goal difference (+ 3 to their +1)? Different rulings or what?
Is it done on head to head result between the 2 teams on equal points?

Yes...
This is how teams which are on the same points are ranked:
Points in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
Goal difference in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
Goals scored in head-to-head matches among the tied teams;
If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
Goal difference in all group matches;
Goals scored in all group matches;
Away goals scored in all group matches;
Wins in all group matches;
Away wins in all group matches;
Disciplinary points (direct red card = 3 points; double yellow card = 3 points; single yellow card = 1 point);
UEFA club coefficient.

Fair enough but the only thing that poster has posted all night is complaints about Cash. Seems a bit odd, that's all.

It was an away game to an opposition that had been doing very well so I'm not too fussed. As long as we put them away when we get them which we did.
-
Cash had a decent game I thought . They all did . Tielemans MOTM
-
Anyone got a link to the highlights? I was at work all evening so missed it.

Thank you.

Apparently there was a kid with a sign asking Diaby for his shirt, and the ground staff took it off him before the game, which made him cry. Diaby found him after the game and gave him the shirt. How nice. (might be video on twitter but I can't access that these days)

the kid had a sign for Diaby but some fucking miserable steward made him take it down and might even have thrown it away from the video. The club helped him connect with Diaby after the game and he got a shirt from his hero. I nice ending.

What a miserable fucker that steward was. Why throw it in the bin? Good on the club and Moussa for being brilliant.
-
That young AZ fan got his Diaby shirt in the end despite the drama with the steward . A happy ending

I thought begging was illegal? Tarring and feathering would be too good for the little scrote. Then he should be horsewhipped.
-
That's advertising money can't buy.
-
Why take it in the first place? The kid had taken it down anyway. Once it was taken, then I doubt the steward wanted a piece of cloth with French writing on it, or were going to hold onto it for 90 mins and give it back. Although the female steward was comforting him so I wonder if she also had a hand in sorting this out.
Was that in an empty section of the ground as well, or just well before kick-off?
-
A very nice result to wake up to
-
Storm in a teacup move on, let's not let it overshadow the result

Just when I thought tonight couldn't get any better. I hope it goes viral.
The amount of work that kid put in to make his sign..delighted for him.

-
Normally I'd agree with Dave and Risso on this, but I'd show some leniency here as he did it on cloth and translated it into French. So no horsewhipping required.
-
Very polite French too, by my limited grammatical abilities?
-
Great result. I know there is a gulf in quality between our respective leagues but AZ are no mugs, particularly at home. We were incredibly clinical. I think we were slack at times playing it out, gave them far too many chances but we were so ruthless it didn't matter.
In terms of what it means for the group, beat them at home and they can't catch us. Beat Legia by two goals at home and they can't catch us either, even if they win their next one. With our home form as it is you've got to fancy that. Finishing top of the group is huge advantage in missing a round against a potentially tricky opponent.
-
This felt like a statement win in the tournament

Excellent, controlled performance.
Sorry to add, but what is wrong with the twats at Sky. They surely know +3 is > +1 ?

We lost the game vs Legia so that takes precedence over GD

i knew you two miserable arses would have a downer on this. Bloody great impressions of grumpy old men, I doff my cap to you both.

I’m probably repeating an earlier post but AZ have only conceded 4 goals at home in the league all season - in 9 games.

Your right Chico my friend. This win shouldn't be underestimated. I never expected us to tear them apart like that. They are having a very impressive season (until they met the mighty Aston Villa).
-

Making him take it out of his bag to do so as well.

And a fan for life in Alkmaar.

On conceding goals BBC website ranted about us conceding 5 goals and not able to keep a clean sheet in the last 5 or so matches. So would that be
1-4
4-1
1-1
6-1
1-0
I’ll take that all season long.
-
Utterly ruthless performance.
We punished any errors and scored at the right times to take the sting out of anything they tried and, for probably the first time, the changes in the team didn’t cause any drop off in levels.
-
It is no surprise that having the first choice pairing of Luiz and Kamara in front of the defence seemed to make us more solid. Tielemans performance showed he is better further forward then in front of the back 4, although he also got the blocks in when needed.
-
Brilliant performance again we are playing some fantastic football and long may it continue.
-
Amazing away experience, really enjoyed it, right time for my flight home.
The ear worms are strong though
🎶oh what a night…..🎶

Thought Tielemans did well when he shifted back into Luiz spot. Made one great block that forced a corner.
I'm increasingly unsure about Carlos though. He had a shocker of a second half.

He’s far too casual for my liking. Good enough as a back up for now but he’s not worrying our first choice paring anytime soon.
-
It's easy to forget with Carlos that he had a long time out with a serious injury. We haven't seen enough of him yet to know if he can adapt to Emery's methods. I think he's probably 4th choice centre half now though, and might not have much of a future with us once Mings is fit again.

There aren’t many better 4th choices about tho. Think he is perfectly good enough for our bench and the odd start & I think he would also be useful to bring on if chasing a game against a side sitting back for attacking set pieces
-
There were two risky passes first half in our area that could have been punished. As I mentioned at half time he put their striker off with his challenge for the Kamara fuck up so yes, he did contribute but overall his tendency to pass the ball loosely is what his weakness is. Lifting the ball instead of keeping it on the ground. He may sharpen up but as it is now Im not sure.
-
Worrying reports of us conceding in matches. So true because if we hadn’t scored 4 last night, we would have lost 1-0!! You couldn’t make it up.

That's just given me a flashback to when we used to do that with Chris Samba.......

It's a shame replica shirts cost £70 and it's come to kids having to take signs to games in order to get a Villa top.

That's a bit of a leap mate, he's not exactly begging for food because his parents can't afford to eat. Plus he was in the Netherlands, so his parents could obviously afford a match ticket, flight and hotel.
It was a nice touch by the club, but I hate those signs, and now there are going to be loads of similar X Factor style sob stories doing the rounds, I'm sure. It's just a sense of entitlement.
-
Ta TV...they're still twats at Sky though.
Not all of us :)

Tongue in cheek that one 😉
-
He probably isn’t getting a shirt from Diaby if the sign isn’t taken from him, thrown away causing him to cry and seen publicly through social media.
-
I'd give my shirt to the next kid along without a sign as they clearly don't have money for cardboard and marker pens.
-
Ah, apologies OCD!

Was he UK based? I questioned last night how he was in a section that appeared empty and unused. I wasn't sure if it was a ball boy tasked to retrieve balls from the empty terrace who overstepped the mark. Someone else in this or the other thread thought he was a local as well.
-
So the steward should be thanked, because if it wasn't for him the kid wouldn't have got the shirt.
-
I'm another who really hates those signs, I think clubs should be doing all they can to attract kids to games. Apart from the ones who bring those signs, they can fuck off.

This is how to deal with signs

That's the way!
They should have arrested that lad last night for going on to the pitch at the end! ;)
-
I can't stand those signs. We've got some good publicity from it though. My solution would be snipers on top of the stands to take out the begging little shits.
-
I see that the reason the steward took the sign away is that they are banned in Dutch grounds, that's the kind of small minded pettyness I can really get on board with.

from villanews:
Matty Cash – 4
Contributed tellingly to the Aston Villa attack throughout the game but was actually handed the worst average score of any Villa player [via SofaScore] at a dreadful 6.1/10 and his underlying stats prove why, winning just three of his eight duels at a worrying success rate of 38%, lost possession 11 times and completed just one dribble given he’s expected to provide Villa with the width on the right.
The beeb rated him 8.19/10. I thought he was somewhere in the middle.
-

That would strongly suggest he wasn't a local then.
-
Only see certain clubs have banned them, not necessarily a blanket ban. Ajax did it last year and them and FC Copenhagen seem to be the only ones to come up in a google search about Dutch Football banning shirt requests.

Looked like he had a Dutch face to me.
Think he was wearing clogs too.
-
Walking to the ground we came across a Villa fan climbing up a lamppost shouting “I’m not fuckin having that!” Thought, bit strange but he is pretty pissed…
Get to the next lamppost to see this beauty…
Gorra laff.

Superb result. Superb performance. Totally outplayed them for the whole game.
Thought Tielemans was superb last night. Not just because of his goal & assist, but his overall play was hard working. His closing down was superb. Passing crisp. When he was pushed back after Douglas Luiz went off, he wasn't as effective, but he still worked hard. This is the Tielemans we need.
Close behind Tielemans MPV game award performance was Bailey. Thought he looked excellent last night, & again, not just down to his goal & assist. He always looked dangerous on the ball, created chances & looked like a performance to show why we purchased him.
Watkins not far behind with another great game, along with McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Kamara, Digne. Even Lenglet looked decent last night.
Shoutout to the referee too. Thought he had an excellent game.
Overall, delighted with the performance & noticing more & more that commentators & the media are starting to notice us...
-
Fantastic result, Langlet really impressed me
If I am critical, I wish we would stop being so obsessed with tipy tapy at the back.
3 times Kamara lost the ball and we could have conceded, not for the first time this season.
However have to keep pinching myself wondering when it will go tits up as I am an obsessive Villa doubter.
Roll on Luton and six more to the tally
Its how we start our attacks by inviting the press so we can pass into the midfield areas...
I think that we need to be patient & accepting of mistakes in this area because the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
Thats how I see it anyways...

Yes re the referee, all the ones I've seen in European games this season are much better than the PL ones. Ours last night was excellent, along with VAR.

I've been saying this for some time.
The problem in this country is not VAR, or rule changes, it's PGMOL.

I'm not sure why VAR even looked at that one offside though. It was pretty obvious.

I don't see why we don't hire foreign officials to oversee the Premier League.
There would be fewer allegiance issues. Potentially fewer "sky six" bias issues.
And lets face it, a lot of them just seem to be better at it than ours are. Whether thats a training issue, I couldn't say.
But the Premier League claims to be best in most areas of football, so why not pay for the best referees from abroad?
-
VAR in the European games is just so much quicker and efficient. The PL have made it way more complicated than it needs to be and instead of acknowledging they should improve their process seemed to doubled down on their arrogance on their system being right. So much so that they ultimately defend their own actions and compound poor decisions with more poor decisions.
-
Wasn't there some talk of Pierluigi Collina moving over here to ref when he left Serie A ?

What makes the Premier League anymore important than any other league in the world??
PGMOL need to stop hiding behind rule changes and pathetic apologies over mistakes and improve the standard of their officials…if Webb and co can’t or won’t do it then the FAs need to take control of PGMOL
-
Saw this on BBC but I must have missed all these opportunities?
Alkmaar spurned several good opportunities before the break, included a gilt-edged chance for top scorer Vangelis Pavlidis when he was clear through on goal.

Money.
We have the best players, the best managers & the best owners. For the most part.
Is it fair & balanced?
Probably not.
But the Premier League is big business, so it seems like evolution of the "product" that we should hire the best officials too...

As shown in that recent debacle over the Liverpool offside. Such an important decision, and yet you could tell there was no clear process or method of communication in place at all. Just a badly trained rabble talking over themselves like 5th formers in a school council.
-
The problem is that the sky favourites are happy with the current situation because they know there is a (sub)conscious bias in their favour both on the pitch and at Stockley Park. The last thing they want is "neutral" referees.

A fair point, in my humble opinion...

Did you miss the Kamara mistake then which was the Pavlidis chance? Also, the offside chance and the run through with the shit header to finish were probably their best ones.

He didn't say it is.
But it's a good point, why not get VAR from abroad, because they could be anywhere in the world as long as they have an internet connection. It's not the standard that I have an issue with, it's impartiality. Mike Dean saying he didn't want to overturn his pal's call in game it says everything you need to know.

VAR 100%, for me they shouldn’t be referees who also ref a game on same weekend….VAR is a specific role and should be that persons job and they could easily could work across leagues
-
I don't know why ex-pro's aren't used more, especially in the VAR capacity.

I said something similar a few months back. We could also send English refs to Europe for training. Fuck me, some of them really need it.
As for last night, I've just watched the Villa on Tour vlog, it looks like everybody has an extremely good time.
-
I don't know why ex-pro's aren't used more, especially in the VAR capacity.
The majority of ex-pros seem oblivious about the laws of the game when they talk about refereeing decisions

Never felt Pavlidis was going to score but that’s one opportunity not several.

Can you imagine a plum like Danny Murphy in a VAR room?
-
I don't know why ex-pro's aren't used more, especially in the VAR capacity.
No, please don’t we don’t need that hapless community getting involved. I have never seen two of them agree on a decision or actually get it right unless its staring at them as red as a baboon’s arse.
-
Plenty of retired referees tho rather than ex players
-
I doubt many of the ex-players Shearer and co always advocate for even know the rules.
-
Using ex-pro's doesn't mean any pro and doesn't mean they can't be trained. It doesn't even mean ex-Premier League players. Just people with working experience who can read a situation better than what some referees will.

“Aston Villa are still a better team than West Ham, especially the power up front and the footballing ability,” he said.
“And punishing opportunities. I thought Aston Villa was also a bit more direct in the pressing. West Ham dropped a little more and let us have more of the ball.
“That was the biggest difference today. They are extremely fast up front and very deadly.”
- Sven Mijnans (AZ Defender).

Wish I could upvote this.

Apparently, that's AZs first home defeat in 29 Euro matches!
West Ham won there in May.
It was mentioned it was their first home loss in 29 European matches. Guess the commentators got it wrong.
Well, read it that we destroyed one of last season's semi finalists, away from home, when they're in form ... still seems pretty good.
-
I had to give up trying to watch it on a phone that was balanced on a RSJ whilst at work, so I've watched it now. Blimey, we're good, aren't we? "See this ball, yeah? You can't play with this one. This is our ball. And see all that grass there, that lovely, open, green, green grass with nobody on it? You can't play on that either. That's our grass."
And I like to think that somebody, somewhere, was tutting in a similar manner to many of us down the ages at having to listen to a somewhat biased commentary.
And that wasn't even our first team!
-
So does anyone know an accurate figure for the number of villa fans that went over to Holland?
-
I don't know why ex-pro's aren't used more, especially in the VAR capacity.
Knowing the Premier League, we'd probably end up with Gary Neville doing Manchester United games, Carragher doing Liverpool.games etc.
-

I think 950 in the stadium, but presumably many more without tickets.

This is a great idea. Although it would probably mean sending David Coote to referee in Slovakia or somewhere, which would set back diplomatic relations and may be interpreted as a declaration of war.
-

Sorry, that’s what I meant. Presume the amount travelling without tickets was at least a few thousand. Just wondered if anyone had heard of any specific numbers.
-
Stan Collymore was there and had his Cannock Villa flag confiscated. To be fair, it was a bit daft taking it in to the area where it kicked off with the West Ham friends & family last season.
-
The type of brilliant euro performance we were led to believe would be the norm under Unai. It's taken a while, though the serially high - class league showings have been great consolation.
