4 changes, happy with that and a very strong midfield which will be crucial.

Strong midfield and attack. Not overly sure about the Carlos and Lenglet partnership against a decent attacking team. 3-1 win hopefully!

Decent enough line up.

I'd be strongly encouraging Digne and Luiz to pick up a yellow at the weekend.

The defence worries me, but as long as we score more than them I'll be happy.

If we’re going that strong, we might as well have put Torres and Konsa in as well. It’s not like they run around much in league games.

He's got a point. We conceded 0ne against Brighton and one against West Ham.

433?  Or strict 4 across midfield with Bailey up with Watkins.

Bailey needs an away performance tonight.

Will struggle against quick forwards those two. Tielemans has really struggled in that Ramsey position previously so surprised Emery has gone with it again.

Big night for Bailey.

                  Emi
Cash Carlo  Lenglet   Digne
             Boubacar
Tielemans Luiz McGinn
   Bailey
                 Watkins

That's how I see them lining up. Apparently AZ attack with wingbacks, so it's vital that either Bailey puts a shift in covering back, or Tielemans and Kamara can protect that side.

If we had say Torres or Konsa at the back with Carlos instead of Lenglet, then I'm sure fans would be happy. Don't see why Lenglet is viewed so negatively. 15 caps and 105 games for Barca tell me he's no mug.

One of AZ's centrebacks is a converted defensive midfielder and Ibrahim - 23yr old 5'6" winger from Ghana makes his debut for them.

Has he? I thought most of the time when he was starting, he was further back in the Luiz / Kamara position. When he has been played further forward/ come on as sub, he normally has created chances.

Brilliant stuff isn't it?!
Though Carlos needs to improve his distribution from the back and cash seems a bit one dimensional possession in defensive third.
Tielemans is having a fantastic game.
And that was a brilliant strike by Bailey.
Very encouraging and deserved lead so far.

I'm not watching it, who is playing where? Is Tielemans playing off the right or as the central support to Ollie?

Central. A less dynamic Diaby role. Dropping deeper at times to receive that direct vertical pass

This is the Emery Villa performance we've been waiting for in Europe.

What's notable with Lenglet and Carlos rather than Konsa and Pau is that playing it around at the back from the keeper, which we're pretty much used to by now, looks just that little bit more ropey and nerve-wracking.

What a strange half.
Collectively, as a team we have been excellent and controlled the game.
Individually, we have been poor. Every player has misplaced simple passes, missed some tackles and lost their runners.
The 2 centre halves and Cash are not in synch with massive gaps between them.

But we are winning, away, in Europe. It’ll do.

It's our only possible weakness, other than that we're lethal. We don't seem to have a typical Villa goal, instead we magically conjure them up from no where. Maybe that is the typical Villa goal.

We’re playing an elaborate game of chicken with their aggressive press - when it works we look ace, but every player has to pass/control perfectly as they have so little time

Thought the Martinez stand off thing was weird at the time. But it obviously made them think they needed to close us down more quickly, then we suddenly switched gear and took them apart.

Unai is a bonafide genius. I even think Bouba losing it is part of the plan. Well, not losing it, but holding on for that half a second too long, make them think they have a plan, then funeralling them.

Thought Lengelet has done okay, Carlos less so, a few too close for comfort passes and long ball passing more hopeful than accurate. He did put the striker off for the Kamara fuck up to his credit.

Some of the best I ve seen for us away this season - Alkmaar supposed to be very good at home in Europe. Lenglet, Carlos , Tielemans and Bailey very good. Even Cash did something right but also makes us problems and disrupts our game as he usually does (I run for cover).

Really good performance, however they look like they have a goal in them. Third goal earlyish second half would be nice to kill it off . I would not take Watkins off at 2-0, unless its very late in the game, their defence shits itself every-time it goes near him.

I genuinely like it when you see the whole thing, not just the jersey. Dougie even has boots to match. The BK8 would be in white on it, which definitely looks better than the yellow, but tonight's one definitely just looks better in general.

The typical PTSD of any Villa fan. When they had the ball in the net I thought we were in for a nightmare but then it turns out we caught them offside about 10 yards into our half. Absolutely not used to this kind of controlled team performance at all.

And obviously I still expect AZ to have scored 2 on 55 mins.

Was a good finish from them to be fair. Took it early and precisely. We actually nearly cut them open again with our move right before this. Fine margins!

Looked like it to me judging by the stripes on the pitch.

We just need to relax a little. We're away in Europe. The home team are always going to have a dominant spell. Soak up a bit of pressure then him em with a sucer punch.

I said in first half Carlos needs to improve his distribution.
It's not his strong point at the best of times.
Same with Cash one dimensional in defenive third only using right foot. And we've seen Kamara get caught in possession before

The game is won anyway but these improvements on their ball play is needed generally especially Carlos and Cash.

I’d (at least) take Watkins off as he’s currently redundant, there will be a chance on the break to boost Duran’s confidence.

According to the BBC, we only had 5 shots, all on target with the four goals. I imagine the other attempt was Baileys effort that was saved which lead to Watkins putting away the 3rd.
