Title: Wolves vs Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: Smirker on October 01, 2023, 03:34:34 PM
Sunday 8th October, kick off 2pm.

Can't wait for this one. They'll be up for it but our team is just much better. I'm not worried and we owe them one for last season.

I can't see anything other than an away win here.

2-1 Villa.

I wish I was as confident as you Smirker. Neto looks a massive threat and Hee-Chan looks very good. Also they seem to have cursed us.

This is how you be confident like Smirker:

- If we have a good record against them, they're shit and we'll beat them

- If we have a bad record against them, we're due a win and we'll beat them

- If we won our last game, we're on form so we'll win

- If we lost or drew our last game, we're due a win so we'll win

Try it guys.

Ha ha! I’m going all out Smirker this week.

Emery to win a cup game and do the Wolves at Molineux.

What will it be if you consider all life to be meaningless because to consider any alternative would mean embracing all the pain you've buried so deep that it's become the foundation for your existence?

I worry about the pace they have up front against our defence. If we can adapt accordingly to that then we should get the 3 points

Think it will be tricky in that they will sit back and defend then try and hit us on the break. Glad they sprung that on Citeh so Unai has a week to analyse it and figure out how to break them down. Hopefully we get the first goal and go on to win, but it could end up being a frustrating result.

I think we’ll beat them to be honest. Massive result for them at the weekend, but it doesn’t always follow for struggling teams, which they are, to follow it up with another win. Unai had the measure of Gary O’Neil when we dismantled Bournemouth back in March and they had decent form at the time.

2-0 us (Watkins, Diaby).

A very much don’t concede first.
They are a counter attack team, and they have the pace to be threatening.

For what it's worth, given that both teams are coming off massive highs this weekend, the Law of Anticlimax states that this will be a rare Emery draw.

They're well overdue a good shoeing, last season there it may as well have been Allardyce in the dugout the way they set up.

Hopefully we'll hear the soft sounds of Hi-Tec trainers leaving en-masse well before the end.

It was probably the worst perfomance under Emery last season at their place, and we need to put our recent poor run against them right. 2-0 to us please.

So no Ramsey no Moreno, as expected. Kamara and Diaby are training with the team tomorrow and will be assessed, they might play, might not.

He didn't confirm Ramsey had broken the bone in his foot again but did say he'll need time to recover again. Moreno he hopes will be back working with the team after the break.

They're not all one-eyed troglodytes, one of my good mates is a Dingle and he's sound. He reckons they'll be lucky to get a point on Sunday and will be in a relegation fight for the rest of the season.

I'm hoping for a comfortable victory - controlled and clinical without undue stress.

It's probably not the case but it feels like we've had a pattern all season of bad performance/result - reaction good performance/result - bad - good - and repeat....

This feels like the first game we're going into off the back of a great performance/result followed by an ok-ish performance but good result. I don't know what to expect!

Neto's a very good player. He could really hurt us if Digne gets caught upfield when we lose possession.

Beyond that though they simply don't have the quality they did even last season. Big reason our record is so poor v them recently is we could never impose ourselves on Neves-Moutinho and they'd generally control the tempo of the games.

Now their central midfield is more workmanlike and physical so we should be o.k there.

Think because of the big respect UE had for Lopetegui he overcomplicated both games last season. With Gary O'Neil in charge and them having a more basic way of playing it shouldn't be a problem.

Think we'll grind out a 1-2 win and make no mistake that would be a huge win for us when you look at the other fixtures this weekend.

Fancy Zaniolo to score in this and wind up the South Bank.

I don't hate Blues, Wolves or West Brom. They're not a threat. No local team has ever caused a rage in me like the Sky 6 and especially MC. That is real hatred. The way the rest of the league is ignored and belittled in favour of these 6 clubs gets me very angry. I don't care that a shit club down the road doesn't like us.

I'm not arsed about WBA or Wolves, they hate us a lot more, and they dream up this rivalry. It amuses me.
I dislike Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle.

I have a dormant hatred of Small Heath. It's a total waste of energy to spend even a moment thinking about them now. But should we ever play them again, dial that revulsion up to 11. Same for those Stripey twats, although not as much antipathy as the Noses draw.

Shots taken by defenders in the Premier League in 2023/24:

14 - Matty Cash
13
12
11
10
9 - Pedro Poro, Lewis Dunk

And no defender has scored more goals (2).

Couldn't find the Cash thread. I didn't look particularly hard though, in all honesty. He's so important to how we play, especially since Moreno has been out.

I see this as the danger , they are easy to underestimate and are very strong at home. Neto , Cunha, Semedo , Dawson, the keeper all excellent players and on their day they can beat anyone . We will have to be 100% for the full 100 minutes , I do think if we can score first we will win but the other way round it's going to be like last season.

Absolutely! I reckon Zaniolo is the type of player that loves and thrives in a local derby. He's come so close to scoring a few spectacular goals, hopefully tomorrow is the day he finally smashes the back of the net.

Like against Brighton, win the midfield battle and we should come home with 3 points. It will be tough so no room for passengers. Right now, despite a recent improvement in helping out defensively, Bailey can't start tomorrow.

0-2 Villa (Diaby, Konsa)

We struggle against big, physical teams like Wolves and West Ham, particularly in midfield. Wolves are industrious but nothing more but will make it a tough game and in Neto and Hwang they have a couple of inform forwards. I'm sure Unai will have been pondering how to hurt them since we went down 1-0 at the doghouse towards the end of last season with an insipid display. Let's hope he's worked them out.

I'll be optimistic and go 0-1.

They’ve had Traore for years who had pace, but no brain and now Neto has come back to full fitness and has bags of pace and a brain. He’s going to be the threat I think, especially without Mings and Moreno. Digne and Torres will have their hands full with him.

Thought Carlos looked a bit rusty midweek, maybe understandably. If Kamara is out, I think we will have to do something like that with Tielemans next to Luiz and a front three of McGinn, Watkins and Diaby.

I know why Diaby and Kamara will start tomorrow. They weren’t injured in the first place. Diaby’s pull/strain/paper cut was more believable than Kamara’s non existent knock/contact with a Brighton player once the game was won. Had we been playing a CL game that would have been a different matter. I kind of don’t blame them but they do fall down in my estimation compared to say, Dougie.

What on earth are you basing that on? Why would either of them feign injury and want to come off in a game like that? I was quite close to the Kamara incident, and as soon as he did it he signalled to the bench that something wasn't right. He tried to run it off but then did the spinning fingers signal that he needed to be subbed.

I’ve made Watkins captain in my FPL this weekend ahead of Haaland. I reckon he’ll help himself to a few today.
Oh FFS! I was confident before I read this. If my weekend ends up miserable you owe me one...or two next time.

Yep if he doesn’t score that’s a ban.

Half the team out, wolves seem to give us a hard time, reckon they’ll win.

Few beers deep?

I've voted for a draw, only because we haven't had one of those for a while. It would be a massive result if we could win though.

Does anyone know anywhere in Brum showing the game?

On that note, if anyone knows rivers they could share via pm that would be grand as I'm locked out of my normal options for viewing
