What a team, what a Manager, what a time to be a Villa fan.
-
Nice.
-
Poor form starting a post-match thread early.
-
That’ll teach him… 6-1
-
I did it on purpose in the hope they’d get six!
-
Come on mods spare my blushes!
-
Decent. Disappointed to concede 1
-
Ha!
-
10 consecutive home league wins
Third time in the PL era we've won 5 of the opening 7 PL games.
64 points from 32 league games under Unai.
Scoring for fun a lot of the time.
-
Fuck me sideways that was a joy to behold!
-
What a result!!
-
Brighton are still in this.
-
Brilliant performance, Watkins was unplayable, 4-5 other superb performances as well.
-
What a fantastic team Brighton are.
-
Brighton bubble popped!
Doubt Unai at your own risk. Absolutely massive performance and fully deserved. Enjoy your weekends, UP THE VILLA.
-
Overlooking the English Channel, few pints of Rattler, Villa winning 6-1, what’s not to love!!👍😁😁😁
-
Shades of the Everton 6-2 in 89 about this.
Will be great if it has a similar impact on our progress this year.
-
I told you so, me and big Daz, up the fucking Villa
-
How nice to get that result so early in the day. Can relax now for the rest of the weekend.
-
Everything will seem, taste and smell so much better now this weekend
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
-
Needed that.
Perfect.
-
Thoughts from those with concerns about the project midweek welcome.
We're really really good. Top 4 good.
Never doubt Unai.
-
fuck the micky mouse cup
champions league please
-
Sensational. 5 out of seven is a great start.
And I live in a town where blue and white striped shirts have suddenly flourished in the last few years when they all used to support Liverpool and United. Helps we always beat them but this is particularly sweet as they are such a good side.
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
I went back and forth on captaining Watkins or one of the players playing twice this week...... Burnley are going to have two amazing results for me to have made the right decision
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
Ha - I dropped Watkins as captain.
-
Tremendous result. Been following from the car, can't wait to watch the highlights later.
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
Ha - I dropped Watkins as captain.
I transferred Watkins out before Chelsea. You're welcome everyone.
-
Brilliant stuff - really excellent for the majority. Midfield was top class today and obviously Ollie was tremendous.
Just concerned about Diaby and Kamara, massive players so hopefully very minor knocks.
-
I think we will stay up.
-
Wow, just wow. Luiz is quickly becoming my favourite player. Ramsey adds so much. Torres and Konsa were solid other than their goal. Ollie and Moussa run their nuts off. Our full backs were competitive and sharp. Cracking win, absolutely excellent. We were a bit stodgy at the start of the second half but pulled it back together again. Wonderful performance and not a single player played below par today.
-
Fuck my old boots, anazing.
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
I went back and forth on captaining Watkins or one of the players playing twice this week...... Burnley are going to have two amazing results for me to have made the right decision
I briefly set Watkins as my captain and then bottled it and went back to Haaland but I knew Watkins would score today, he always does against this lot.
-
I transferred Watkins for Pedro.
-
A special mention for Cash, hardly gave Mitoma a touch.
-
Enjoyed that.
-
Prior to the game, I thought our defence wasn't quite there and might be too disjointed, but boy did they shut me up! They defence were excellent, for probably the first time this season. Everyone was sharp, no sloppy passes, just very classy football throughout.
Amazing result, Villa on the march!
-
I'm in the middle of buying a flat in Hove, might even be moved-in in a couple of weeks so I look forward to strutting down Brighton sea-front in claret and blue 8)
-
Delighted JJ is back, and scoring. Fingers crossed the knocks today aren't serious and we can start to get a bit of stability in midfield again.
-
A quick word for Brighton. What a superb club. And to come to Villa Park and play the way they do is just remarkable. How do they do it?!
-
I take its that we played better than on Weds. Great stuff, love a 'statement' win. 8)
-
Champions League place after this weekend if either Spurs lose or Arsenal fail to win
-
A quick word for Brighton. What a superb club. And to come to Villa Park and play the way they do is just remarkable. How do they do it?!
What a story, honestly. Obviously, credit to Aston Villa for the way they played today. But to see Brighton so fearlessly passing the ball around and having courage in possession even when 5-1 down, it really speaks to the transformation de Zerbi has made at the club. Their fans will be pinching themselves!
-
To think, this game worried me beforehand. What a performance. That might be our best game under Unai. Up there with Newcastle at home last season.
I don't even think Brighton were that terrible either. They started each half reasonably well but we just had them sussed and were totally ruthless.
There is not a single player in his position in the division I'd trade Dougie for right now. What a player. He's dictating games. He's clever, silky, skilful and his passing is excellent. He's also become significantly more dynamic in the last 12 months too. An absolute delight to watch.
Who doubted Ollie? Come on, hands up...love him. What a player. I could count on one hand the strikers in the top flight you could probably legitimately say are better. He goes a few games without a goal and some fans run straight to a transfer thread saying that "we need better." Better isn't easier, it comes at a premium price and as we see from what other clubs spend, there are no guarantees. For me, Ollie is priceless. Sort his contract out asap. Name the ground Ollie Watkins Park if you have to.
Pau was very good. Konsa was immense. Full backs very good today and Kamara too. Diaby is quality. Good to see JJ back again. He still looks a few weeks away from launching top gear on those runs but that goal was class.
Only player who didn't quite tick was Zaniolo. It didn't quite happen for him today.
Now...can we just be half as sharp and ruthless as this in cup games please? We've got to be bang on it on Thursday.
-

A privilege to see them today. What they produce every week is astonishing.
-
Jacob Ramsey is a special talent.
-
They lost 6-1😆
-
Champions League place after this weekend if either Spurs lose or Arsenal fail to win
I reckon one of those is going to happen. Namely Spurs getting a pasting.
-
Absolutely brilliant!
-
Jacob Ramsey is a special talent.
Agreed. Great to have him back
-
Can't wait to hear the thoughts of the lads at VP today as to how excited they must have been to see how press-resistant Billy Gilmour is in the flesh!
-
A quick word for Brighton. What a superb club. And to come to Villa Park and play the way they do is just remarkable. How do they do it?!
They're getting very good at helping us out.
-
I was in awe of Mitoma; he was a perpetual threat. Seeing him on the Villa Park turf is a memory to pass on to one's grandchildren.
-
An excellent performance, if you just talk about the league it’s been remarkable since Unai came in and we haven’t seen anything like this for years. Torres best performance so far, such a good footballing centre back and with a bit more time and development it’ll give the team a new dimension. Diaby is our best outfield player in general I think, he was great again today but Watkins was man of the match obviously. Cash, McGinn, Luiz and Konsa all brilliant too, Martinez as ever. Looked dangerous every time we went forward with attacks being built from the back. Just outstanding.
Oh yes, and Ramsey will be back in the 11 on that performance, no doubt.
-
A special mention for Cash, hardly gave Mitoma a touch.
Another special mention to Super John McGinn, so industrious with the vision and ability to take control of the game.
-
Brilliant win, serious credit to Emery for getting such a tune out of the group after the debacle on Wed. Looking forward to watching it back later. Never underestimate Ollie Watkins!
-
Wow - unreal - what a performance. Everyone at there best - especially impressed with the way we responded after they pulled one back - so many villa teams of old would have end up drawing that - or at the very least - made it very nervy.
Shows whats a world class managers worth. Brilliant to see Ramsey back and looking good. Thought Diaby and Watkins were unplayable at times. Luiz is really looking absolutely world-class at the moment - on current form he is as good as a midfielder I've seen play for the Villa. Konsa looked great, and Matty Cash and Digne both worked very hard - Cash did excellently at both ends of the pitch.
Well done everyone - brilliant to see.
-

Amazing result, Villa on the march!
I thought the Chelsea game was the first signs of the defence getting close to what they did last season. Pau looks settled and Konsa's game has stepped up.
-
Where do I start with that game?
Amazing result, great to see some confidence building in the team, Ollie scoring goals for fun again - defence looking solid again.
Great performance, we finally administered the tonking that we threaten to do every now and then.
I wish commentators wouldn’t say teams are “off” when they come to Villa - these are teams that would demolish us given half a chance, play excellent football and deserve a crack in the top few of the league. Where they are wrong is that it’s actually us playing really well - we are frustrating them, playing aggressively and pressing hard. And generally being ruthless.
It’s not so much teams having bad days when they come to us, it’s us not letting them have a good day.
3-0 down in 25 minutes will destroy the mindset of any team out there.
Man, I am so proud of our team right now.
-
Lovely stuff, what a performance against a very good side.
-
Well I never expected that I was quite nervous before the game, but what a fantastic performance.
-
Brilliant performance and brilliant result.
I think we should mark the calendar, because I think today marks the day when the Emery revolution at Aston Villa no longer flies under the radar. From now on, we will be part of the conversation at the top end of the league. No more "surprise package". No more "outsiders". We're up there, on merit.
-
As markers go that's a pretty impressive one to put down.
-
A tactical masterclass from Unai and the players executed to a T.
A very slight wobble after De Zerbi had bollocked the BHA players at half-time, but otherwise in total control.
Obviously Ollie will (and should) take the headlines, but I thought Torres was sublime with his touch and distribution.
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
My phone was screwed before the game and couldn’t bring Watkins on. What a pain in the arse!
-
I can’t wait for Unai Cam on Monday, it’s their best segment on the YouTube channel. This one should be fun.
-
Great stuff, what a fabulous result! That’s a comeback and a half. Well done, all concerned.
But did our sweaty shirts cause their goal?
-

All brilliant but John McGinn my MOM. Unbelievable display.
-
Season ticket didn’t work , didn’t fancy us today , I was close to going home.
Glad I didn’t !!!
-
Absolute masterclass.
When we’re good we are very, very good.
-
Almost a perfect game for Villa except for the Brighton goal…which was so crap it didn’t deserve to be called a goal!
-
That was sexy. Enjoyed Southgate getting boos when his horseface popped up on the screen.
What what the big square of empty seats in the upper Doug Ellis about?
-
What what the big square of empty seats in the upper Doug Ellis about?
There was a block in the Trinity as well. I assume unsold Terrace View and Lower Grounds seats.
-
From the comments on The Guardian's match report.
Got to hand it to Emery. He solves the problem with Villa’s kit by instructing his team to win without breaking a sweat.
-
I like that Sadd.
Maybe we won't sack Unai just yet then.
Thrilled by the performance and result, but also by how good Ramsey looked on his return.
-

It got boos when they announced it at HT. And the attendance was only 40k so maybe they were the unsold wanker seats.
-
Clearly still working on the rotation but pleasing to win both league games after losses in the cups in the week.
Expected a very close game but we were clinical at times.
-
We were just excellent today; their midfield couldn't cope at all and Mitoma accomplished very little today. There was only the first few minutes of the second half where they threatened.
Why on earth were there such long delays for VAR today ? Being in line with the first half goals, I only thought the first could need a check, but whatever the outcome, the waits were a bit of a spoiler.
The ref was poor today, booking players for very little and then not booking others, and that included McGinn near the end.
-
What a result.
And what a performance.
Hopefully as the season progresses, we can calm down our "Jekyll & Hyde" style form.
But today was just magnificent.
Almost every player was on top of his game.
What a performance... 👍
-
Yeah I thought the ref was abysmal
-
I said we needed a statement result but I didn't expect that. Happy days.
-
I'll take the 3 goals and 5 assists for my fantasy team as well.
Ha - I dropped Watkins as captain.
I transferred Watkins out before Chelsea. You're welcome everyone.
In my mates fantasy league, three of them transferred Watkins out & one brought him in.
I never pick Villa players for fear of jinxing them...
-
That was rather enjoyable. Special mention for that save from Martínez early on at 0-0. Things could have been very different if that had gone in. I've got used to him having match changing moments like that now. He's so good.
-
My lad and grandson were there today, he reckons McGinn was MOM. He said what others have been saying that we stopped Mitoma playing and then seemed at will to do our thing. Grandson was disappointed, apparently at half-time he predicted a 5-1 win!
-

My daughter predicted 7-0 to a bloke who asked her before the game. He said ‘Do you know who we’re playing?’
-
Should be first up on MOTD but won't be.
-
Really important win against one of our peers . Huge result
-
Should be first up on MOTD but won't be.
You have got to be joking. Villa have just mullered the Beebs 2nd favourite team.
-

Hmm, we'll see. The way most sections of the media carried on after we won against bottom-half Chelsea last week, even after winning there last season, makes me think they'll never change. It was as if Bobby Gould's Smethwick team had turned up at San Siro and overturned peak '90s Milan.
-

It did amuse me how much the TNT lot were waxing lyrical about Brighton. I must admit I like them too but, it was almost like we were there to make up the numbers, even as the home side.
That said, it doesn't hurt to hover just a little bit under radar. Let everyone talk about Brighton, Newcastle and the return of Spurs.
-
The commentary today was like watching Brighton TV, couldn’t even get facts about the Villa correct, piss poor.
-
Only 39% possession at home, Emery needs to sort this out….fuming😡
-
And conceding a goal!🤣
-
What a fantastic performance.
Defensively Konsa and Torres were superb as were Cash and Digne. With McGinn back in midfield winning every ball then we look a very good team. Ramsey is going to make a huge difference to us and how can you not give man of the match to Watkins?
I suppose those empty seats in the Witton Lane upper and Trinity Road were unsold cooperate? If so, that’s surely another sign for a re-think as there were a fair few of them.
The ref was terrible. If they want more respect then they’ve got to earn it and not make it up as they go along.
Anyway, what a great day!!!!!
-
was a total demolition job. Their midfield looked like two kids Gilmor and Hinchelwood, very poor. Villa superb though.
-
Brighton are still in this.
Was what Stuart Pearce was still saying on Talksport even a 4.1.
Listened to it whilst cycling to Pula. A very enjoyable day.
-
The beer at the diggers tastes exceptionally good this afternoon.
-
The commentators make me laugh, when we play well it is always because the other team are having an off-day, never because we are simply brilliant.
At least in the NBC studio, Robbie's Earle and Mustoe gave us the credit we deserved.
Also, I agree that the ref was poor giving us yellows for everything (except Konsa) and letting them away unpunished for the most part.
-
We don’t always appreciate things in real time, but the passing and movement for our first was outstanding
-
Especially for BE. Almost word perfect.
BBC Match of the Day: "I’m very happy. I think we feel a very good connection with our supporters every match – today we showed it. Defensively and offensively, we’re trying to keep it consistent over 90 minutes [but] these three points for the table are very important.
-
Fantastic performance. Will be interesting to see of the national media report it the same way as they did when Newcastle beat us on the opening day. Yet another baffling referee.
-
Well, that was fucking marvellous. A bit edgy when they pulled one back mind, but that was really good.
-
Just finished watching the game i had recorded. What can I add to what's been said. I am really happy. What a fucking 1st half.
Same feeling as when we hammered Newcastle last season.
Looking forward to a couple of pints this evening.
Agood WE to all.
UTV.
-
Fantastic performance and a job well done. SJM back to his best after a few below par performances, Cash had a great game and when Ramsey is at full fitness we will look even better.
A 6-1 win in the game immediately before my birthday, thank you Villa!
-
Looking forward to The Holy Trinity's analysis on this one. He'll be breaking out the special scotch for sure.

We play a high risk reward. Entertaining version.
We don't have a deep enough squad to always be successful but fuck me this is best time to be a Villa fan for a very long time.

-
What a fantastic performance that was. Brighton are a good side & we swept them away. Southgate will be gutted.
There's not a better midfield player in the league than Luiz.
-
Best performance of the season. All the players seemed to click today and, difficult to pick out one player. Ollie mom for his hat trick and work rate, SJM back to his best and also thought JJ was outstanding when he came on. Almost a perfect 10 all round for team work.
-
One thing I did notice today was almost a whole block of empty seats in the upper Trinity and around half a block empty in the upper Witton Lane both close to the Holte. Not sure what was going on with that.
-
Folks reckon these are the unold seats for the Terrace View and Lower Grounds

A perfect day.
-
Brilliant win, Dougie was superb closely followed by McGinn and Kamara. Once they pulled one back at the start of the second half they started to give us problems but the fourth killed them off. I thought it seemed pretty quiet around Villa Park today before the match, must be down to the early kick off.
-
Sensational. Watkins was great, Dougie just gets better and better and some of our attacking play was out of this world.

Add on JJ for the 40 odd minutes he was on and we had last years midfield and it looked every bit as good as it did.

So the league leaders lose for the first time this season.
9th and 10th place teams swap places as ManU lose.
Luton record their 1st win this season.
That's us already relegated to 4th game on MOTD tonight - and that's before we have Spuds v 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' at 1730
-
Was at the game earlier, what a superb performance an win. Watkins and Diaby are a real threat on the break and we could have been 6 up at half-time. Jacob Ramsey coming on and getting a goal was the icing on the cake really as he fills that role on the left so well.
I think today shows that we have got a very good starting XI when everyone is fit and on it. We have looked a bit unbalanced without Ramsey, as he just fits that position so naturally, whereas others don't.

Football is a funny old game. Midweek we're making Everton look like Arsenal, pinging it around for fun and completely unlike Dyche-ball and today we smash Brighton and Everton lose at home to Luton.
-
My lad’s first ever match today. Not a bad introduction to life at Villa Park. I told him it’s like that every week.

My lad’s first ever match today. Not a bad introduction to life at Villa Park. I told him it’s like that every week.
I was buzzing, having taken my youngest two to the Everton game in the week. To be fair they’ve got a pretty good record, but on the way home from that one they were so miserable I worried about what I’ve inflicted on them. The fun they had today made it all worthwhile.
-

you wouldn’t think so according to Sky pundits
-
The more they ignore us, the more they underestimate us, the better.
-
The attitude and approach today only serves to convince me further that the Manager wasn't really fussed about the League Cup. And maybe we need to understand that our desperation for a trophy and fondness for that particular one just isn't shared by him.
Today was just outstanding and you can see players developing, particularly at the back. Konsa is growing into his role without Mings and Torres is improving game on game. Injuries aside we need to keep that back four for at least the next two games. Stability breeds confidence.
-
He said something post match about the league and Europe being very important to "us". I don't know if that was him saying he didn't care about losing midweek, or if its just because for the moment they're the only 2 competitions we're in.
(I still think the team he picked midweek should have beaten Everton)
-
What what the big square of empty seats in the upper Doug Ellis about?
There was a block in the Trinity as well. I assume unsold Terrace View and Lower Grounds seats.
If so that's 2000 short of capacity and £100,000 income flushed down the drain.
-
You're right with your last sentence, Nev. But I don't think he's not bothered. Unlike any of us, or any manager we've ever had previously, Emery knows how to manage a squad in a way that keeps it competitive in the league and Europe. He had to pick that team for Everton, he had no choice. We might think otherwise, but it's not down to us. They should have won regardless.
-

I said as much to the bloke sitting by me in the Trinity at 0-0 - Said look at their keeper, then look at ours... Leagues apart, and he's ours.
-

He took his goal so well. Emery bringing him on when Brighton had their tails up, turned the game back in out favour. Even not totally fit, he just gives us so much energy down the left. When we get Moreno back we are going to be some team with additional threat of Diaby as well.

Honestly thought we'd get turned over today, so what an utter joy to witness a result like that!
Martinez didn't give them anything, and loved how the mad fucker even made the save when play had stopped for offside, then celebrated like we'd scored! 😁
Konsa has stepped up since Mings' injury - Way more assured than he used to be with Mings beside him, and can't be far off an England call up surely?
Pau Torres - I love this bloke. Really seems to be starting to find his feet with a consistent run in the side. Some of his passing is sublime, and he will only get better.
Digne/Cash - Both defended well, Cash in particular kept Mitoma in check, and Digne got his regular bloody nose for his troubles!
Kamara/Luis/McGinn - Thought all 3 were excellent today, and it's no surprise that when we're on form, these guys in the engine room are on it and not giving the opposition a moment's respite.
Diaby - Love him. His work rate is up there with Ollie, and I was willing him to get the goal he deserved today.
Ollie - Always moaning at him, but then he puts in days like today. He was immense, and those Brighton centrebacks are going to have nightmares about him for weeks. Unplayable.
Zaniolo - Some little glimmers of a player in there, but just needs time to bed in.
Ramsey - Had a feeling he'd make an impact, and didn't disappoint. Great cameo and goal, especially with horse face in the crowd.
What also made the day special happened as I was leaving. Left my seat just before the final whistle at 5-1, exiting the Upper Trinity. A group of four well dressed lads, with accents not from round these parts, were in front of me walking down the stairs and I heard mutterings of Watkins and Arsenal, and one of them referring to the Brighton defender as 'Webby'. At that moment, Villa Park erupted as Luis sunk the 6th goal, and they turned to look back up towards the concourse. I just smiled and said, "Have a safe trip back to the seaside lads". 😉

Fantastic performance, deserved result . Brighton get back in your box .

Motd running order prediction? I reckon we'll be 4th behind Wolves, Palace and Liverpool.
MOTD tend to demote any game transmitted live down the running order so I reckon we’ll be 4th or 5th
-
When do they announce the running order?

Just home. Absolutely fantastic performance. Even Nev who sits just behind me in the Holte was in a good mood at the end. UTV

He was awful. I'm still trying to work out how Douglas Luiz got booked just a couple of minutes after a Brighton player just hacked Matty Cash down petulantly near the Holte/Witton corner flag and was shown no card at all.

Have they stopped that obstructing the goalies vision thing? We got away with one for the second if not.

Apparently he wasn't in the goalies line of vision - thankfully!

Well, when Liverpool scored their first against us at Anfield, Emi was literally having to lean to one side to try to see round one of their players in front of him, so it doesn't seem to be too rigorously enforced any more.
-
Jacob Ramsey is going to be one of the greatest players to ever pull on our shirt.
Alongside his brothers. Aaron is definitiely coming home!
-
I travelled up from London after a night on the lash with a load of old mates; having told them I thought BHA would 'do' us today.
I was wrong, and - despite the late night and beery aftereffects - it proved to be an amazing day.
- Shout-out to Cash for doing a great job on the admittedly-over-rated Mitoma.
- Credit to Konsa for being brilliant (that pass in the first half to - I think - Diaby was fantastic.
- Kudos to Ollie for once again defying the critics.
- Praise for JJ - he looks sooooo cool on the ball.
- Oh, and Dougie: what a fucking player that man is!
We were seriously good today.
-
What was the attendance please?

I was behind it in the North Stand and I don’t think Zaniolo was in the line of where the ball went. Ollie kind of mis-hit it a bit and I think that is what beat the keeper.
The VAR for the goals took ages today.

When we are good, we are very, very good.
When you have placed a substantial spread bet on the number of goals scored it makes it even better.
Huzzahh!

Aye. But part of Emery's modus operandi is working out what the opposition do well and nulifying it. Works well (for the most part) in the league when we play a full strength squad. It's a bit more difficult in second tier competions when the opposition switch their starting line up as much as we do.
Plus Everton don't do much well even at the best of times. Even Dominic Cruciate Ligament somehow managed to score. Just an odd night all round.
-
Jacob Ramsey is going to be one of the greatest players to ever pull on our shirt.
Considering he’s still coming back from an injury he put in a terrific performance today and it was a peach of a finish for his goal.

Credit to Digne , his lung bursting run distracted the defender just a split second which enabled JJ to shift the ball and shoot.

Went on my own today as my son couldn’t make it and I was not feeling confident before kick off but wow what a performance.
Every single player was on it today, Ollie back to his best, SJM playing in the correct position, Dougie outstanding, but for me Pau was motm.
Let’s not forget Brighton are a bloody good team and we’ve absolutely smashed them today. Long may it continue.
-
A perfect start to my birthday celebrations; although 6-0 would have been a perfect match, but I'll take it.

That happened to a mate of mine back in 2007/8, or around that time, that on his 40th, we won 4-0 & had an incredible evening celebrating it all...

We said exactly that CL. Diane was running towards us and the distraction factor was massive, and played a big role in the goal.
He has probably been my most surprising player of the season so far.
-
Also, I don't think I have seen it mentioned - but in the first half, Konsa played an outside-of-the-foot pass to Diaby that was truly excellent. It is the kind of thing that if VVD had done for Liverpool sky would have done a 2 hour special on it. I'm sure that was about the point Southgate would have wanted a look around the lower grounds.
I was worried he would struggle not having Mings, but he is reveling in the senior center-back role.
-
Should be first up on MOTD but won't be.
You have got to be joking. Villa have just mullered the Beebs 2nd favourite team.
And the Team that Won the World Cup.
5live last night they were saying how Brighton could finish in Top4 whilst being dismissive of our chances
So the league leaders lose for the first time this season.
9th and 10th place teams swap places as ManU lose.
Luton record their 1st win this season.
That's us already relegated to 4th game on MOTD tonight - and that's before we have Spuds v 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' at 1730
Revised forecast.
Given all the bollocks at Spuds today reckon it"ll be:
"In the early kick off at Villa Park today everybody's second favourites lost 6-1. Here's the Brighton goal."
Then we'll have de Zerbi's post match interview.
And they'll move on to the league table and closing credits.

Brilliant performance, no one had a bad game, special mentions to Ollie, Dougie, Moussa, Ezri, SJM, Matty and great to see JJ back with a quality goal. 10 home league wins in a row, last time that was done was 40 years ago.

So many excellent performances today - Kamara makes such a difference when he’s on it - but special mention to Matty Cash and Lucas Digne. Both excellent and the amount of work they put in was staggering.
-
I will never EVER question anything that Unai does, says or delivers ever again.
The bloke is a genius, a don, a god.
I love the bloke, and right now he is untouchable and beyond question.
Unai, thank you for making this team, this club, relevant again.

Yeah Kamara was fucking top today and is world class when he's at it.
Everyone was marvellous, but Dougie is absolute king boss man of Villa Park right now.

Bit of a worry how reliant we are on Cash and Digne. There's not a lot of options, not good ones at least, to rest them, and there's still a lot of games to play over the next few months. Messing with the defence hasn't worked very well this season, but they're going to need a break at some point.

I'd take knowing what you're talking about over trite compliments any day of the week.

Today was all about how we dominated the midfield, which in turn protected the defence and supplied the attack. Playing four rather than three in there was the key for me. Zaniolo put a serious shift in and then JJ when he came on. I'm hoping it was tactical rather than having to adapt as Bailey is injured.
For me it was a 4-4-2 but so fluid, the old chestnut of attacking and defending as a team. At times a joy to watch. More of that please, Unai.
-
Thought McGinn was brilliant today, back in his regular position. Diaby and Watkins pushed up near each other caused them huge problems. We bullied them all over the pitch. Left flank a bit dicey until Ramsey came on and we looked a real team then.

Probably just an enormous vein popping out of his enormous thigh.

From training during the week, looks like tape. He was moving ok today, actually noticed how fast he was running into that offside position for the goal, so hopefully it's not an injury, just precautionary

We just bullied Brighton all over the pitch today. I was really surprised De Zerbi didn't bring a player or two on at 2-0 as their small players in midfield were just getting bypassed constantly.
Was exactly like Newcastle home last season except this time we scored the amount we deserved from out output.
I always feel relaxed when we play Brighton. We just have their number regardless of what form they're in.
Far more nervous about West Ham in a few weeks who are our kryptonite so that would be a brilliant one to win and make it 11 straight home wins which is an amazing run. Players just don't believe they'll lose at VP nowadays (league).
-
Wolves are another kryptonite for us it seems since the 4-1 thrashing of them under Bruce.

Whenever we're pumping a team, I always follow a match thread on their forum at the same time as ours to get a feel of how think it's going to pan out. Partly reassurance, partly schadenfreude.
Even at 0-0 they couldn't work out why they were playing Gilmour and that weedy child rather than the hard-as-nails Cameroonian guy that Chelsea will buy for £100m in two years.

I loved Ezra Konsa getting in touch with his inner Dave Mackay.

I'm loving some of the interplay between Diaby and Watkins. They are creating space, and chances, for each other. The whole being better than the sum of parts and all that.

The whole team were outstanding.
The manager is a genius.
I really can see future national side dominated by two Brummies in JJ and Jude all we need now is coach who knows his arse from his elbow.

“Shithouse of Birmingham FC“
“Worst away venue, shit pubs, shit traffic , Brum is a bombsite”
“100s of Villa fans leaving at 5-1 up”
“Will we ever beat these feckers”
But the best is some of them actually want the manager out. It’s incredible. Some suggesting a boycott, some saying their performances are under par (yet the media have been praising them like fuck”.
The level headed ones are correct in saying the two Hibs games meant we’ve played two more games than Brighton.
I can’t believe they want the manager out. Not long ago they had 6000 crowds at an athletics stadium.

You should go on the Everton forum after yesterdays result. Crisis back on and numerous suicidal Toffees.
-
Thought we simply bullied them, took a few early yellow cards but it was worth it to disrupt their game and establish ours. Enjoyed the Cash/Mitoma duel. Thought Duggie and Kamara controlled the tempo of the game and were superb. My MOM was Konsa who not only dominated Ferguson, but came out from the back with the ball in a way I didn’t think he was capable of, really impressive.
Watkins will and should get the headlines but Diabby was brilliant off the ball, as soon as we transition into having the ball he sprints full pelt into exactly the position the defenders don’t want him to and makes space for others, he’s fucking brilliant. And Digne made a fantastic run off the ball for JJs goal
Very comfortable win but I was a bit edgy at 3-1 and thought if they scored again it would be interesting.
Also happy that the fella next to ,e showed me pics of his mate in the deserted Holte Suite before the game
-
Fair play to the Brighton fans, the away end didn’t empty when they went 3-0 or 4-1 behind as sometimes happens.
-

To be fair to them, it was only five or six years ago that we were in the same situation with Steve Bruce.
Who's to say that they're wrong and the media lovies are right?

Not bad I guess.
It's funny, we were saying that we hadn't had that statement performance, at least against a top-of-the-table contender. Well we've had one now! Completely insane.

And Digne made a fantastic run off the ball for JJs goal
We were purring over that run from Digne. Took 2 defenders out and paved the way for Ramsey
-
Great result and performance, thought Brighton didn’t play badly and will feel the score was not an accurate reflection of the game. For us great we scored 6 isn’t it just great to see JJ back.
-
Yeah I thought the ref was abysmal
On the way back in the car yesterday, two mates were saying how crap the ref was. I didnt notice too much really, maybe because we were winning. He did book 8 players though I think.
-
One of the things I like about Emery is how, more often then not, a really bad result is followed by a surprisingly good one, which then - tempting fate here - turns into a good run.
Under a lot - well, almost all - of our other managers in the current era, a bad result would usually be followed by another one and a run of poor or mediocre ones.
-
Good god, we've scored more than Man City!
-
One of the things I like about Emery is how, more often then not, a really bad result is followed by a surprisingly good one, which then - tempting fate here - turns into a good run.
Our upcoming fixtures are Zrinjski (H), Wolves (A), West Ham (H), Alkmaar (A), Luton (H), Forest (A), Alkmaar (H), Fulham (H) - meaning the next match we probably have in which we aren't heavy favourites to win is away to Spurs at the end of November.
There's a lot of potential to build momentum in the next two months.
-
Everyone on top form,Torres having his best game since being here, Konsa looking masterful, that through pass to Diaby was superbly executed. The highlight for me though was seeing JJ come on, he gives me a warm glow as you know he will produce and he most certainly did.

Hopefully now isn't the time Gareth Southgate decides to pick our lads for England and everyone gets a nice two week break before the Spurs game. I still think they're going to benefit from lack of extra games, but that fixture falls better for us than it might have.

Was yesterday the perfect football day?
Met up with my nephews in the Bartons with breakfast and Guinness (x3) accompanied by a bit of Ryder Cup and six of the best from the worlds greatest football team.

Not sure if this has ready been noted, but how come our XG came out at fewer than 2 goals and even more bizarrely lower than theirs?!
I mean goal 1 and 6 were pretty much 100% expected for a start. They just had one other decent chance the whole game.
-
5 wins in 7 in the league matches the start during the ghost season. Weird as up until yesterday I don't think we've really clicked. Yesterday everything fell nicely into place . On to wolves be a big test that one.

I just know we will not beat either of those two sides. They seem to have cursed us for years.

I see XG like credit ratings; made-up nonsense designed to provoke pointless discussions with no bearing on reality. Excellent performance yesterday; hopefully the largely empty blocks in upper Witton and Trinity will effect a re-think on the Lower Grounds policy as it’s clearly over-priced.

On the way back in the car yesterday, two mates were saying how crap the ref was. I didnt notice too much really, maybe because we were winning. He did book 8 players though I think.
Oh, he was dreadful. They went down every time they were touched and he obliged. Booked a couple of players early and then let their players off with almost identical fouls.
-
I just know we will not beat either of those two sides. They seem to have cursed us for years.
We're generally poor against Wolves and don't deserve to win, whereas West Ham have had some huge luck against us, can think of at least 2 jammy deflected goals for them against us.
-
Fair play to the Brighton fans, the away end didn’t empty when they went 3-0 or 4-1 behind as sometimes happens.
ir was half empty at 5-1
That was at 85th minute so understandable.

He was an idiot, it all started because he booked Luiz for nothing early on. Then he stopped booking and they realised they could get away with a few. As you say they worked out that throwing yourself on the floor with no contact was a free kick.

Although if any fixtures have the possibility of ending in disappointment, it's West Ham at home and Wolves away.
Yup. I always approach a game against West Ham like Brighton must approach a game against us.
That's where my money would be.

I thought the Ref was fine. Can't really see what he did wrong and generally controlled the game very well.

if we beat them then perhaps curses are being lifted..

Looked in on the Brighton forum and they see it exactly the opposite. They think the ref booked their players for nothing and gave us everything. Football fans eh? Also lots of them "hate aston villa" because we're so snidey apparently. Strange bunch. If anyone's out and about in Brighton today watch your step as there's a lot of rattles and dummies being thrown out of prams

He did well not to give Konsa a second yellow but then the first was OTT, as was the card for Luiz. He then allowed Brighton to get away with similar fouls and repeated fouls by their players that went unpunished; it was a classic case of double standards.

They’re all vegans so probably crying themselves to sleep listening to Moby at 9pm. 😀

I was out and about in Horsham this morning and didn't see a single seagull club badge which is unheard of these last few years. I had the reebok 96 home on.

I was in Brighton, Weds - Friday and in that time, we genuinely saw three instances of people walking barefoot.
Nowhere near the beach, and not there on holiday, just people who looked like they were going to work, walking through the city centre. Sans shoes and socks.

Not sure if this has ready been noted, but how come our XG came out at fewer than 2 goals and even more bizarrely lower than theirs?!
I mean goal 1 and 6 were pretty much 100% expected for a start. They just had one other decent chance the whole game.
Because xG is about as useful as the Kardashians...
-
Referee was totally inconsistent but nowhere near as bad as the clowns at the Spurs v Liverpool match.
Didn’t we look so much better though not pissing about at the back for 5 minutes at a time. Our passing was so much slicker than in other games this season. And as for XG, I think that was made up by the same officials fro the Spurs match!

Excellent choice. Hopefully you pissed a few of them off.

I noticed the anti-Villa vibe on the forums too. Grealish's equaliser in the Championship? Turning them over five games on the bounce? Don't get it. Might be just looking for someone to hate and we're kind of in the same bracket, for now.
Personally I think this is the season they start to drop off. Lost way too much quality this summer. You can only do that for so long, regardless of being masterz of teh dataz.
-
De Zerbi will do well to get away now. They will finish mid table this season and go the way of Southampton in the next 2/3 seasons.

Its two 3s and a 6. They will say the same other way round.

In the two recent wins at the Amex they reckon we shit housed/cheated/played negative football against them. Basically, we didn't let them win..... lol

I’ve given up trying to understand that.
I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Best one IMO. I donated mine to my Dutch pal who still wears it km occasions.

It’s because XG is the most pointless thing ever

Ha same here, just replace the 82 white kit and Haywards Heath.

Mcginn was fantastic on Saturday
Torres and Konsa are now starting to form an excellent partnership, and they could be our Centre backs for the next few seasons
Our passing and movement was very good

I was in Brighton yesterday - fantastic place, by the way - and must have seen a dozen people in Brighton shirts. It was quite good to see so many. I even had a chat with an old boy who was at the game - he was very complimentary about Villa and we shared horror stories about the drive back down south afterwards. Took forever for me to get on to the motorway from Star City, finally got down to the M25 where the traffic slowed to a crawl, got to within a couple of miles of home and realised the Blackwall Tunnel was shut. Took over 1.5 hours to travel the last 5 miles…..

There was an incident near the start of the game, before we'd scored I think where it looked like Diably had put the ball past the keeper as it was bouncing in the box then got wiped out, but a free kick was given to them. Me and the lad next to me were convinced it should have been a pen, I've not seen it since and I'd forgotten about it in all the fun that followed.

I thought that was a penalty as well but I think VAR looked at it as the ref was holding his ear and standing off to the side. It was given as a free kick to Brighton so maybe Steel got to the ball before Diaby though in real time it looked the other way.

If it's th eone I'm thinking of I think it got pulle back for a very soft free kick against Zaniolo, it was one of about 6 really soft decisions the ref gave them in the first 20minutes.

That must have been it.
The free kick that led to their goal was a joke, and there was one in the first half where Zaniolo was chasing a ball over the top and eating the ground up on their full back when he looked over his shoulder and just stopped dead, about 15 yards short of the ball causing Zaniolo to crash into him.
Blatant obstruction, free kick Brighton.
-
On Zaniolo, whilst he didn’t have the best of games from a creative perspective, he did an absolute job on Veltman the right back. Completely pinned him in his own half and meant he didn’t get forward at all to support March and was a continual outlet for the longer pass from Martinez or the back 4. It was reminiscent of McGinn against Dan Burn.

I think sometimes people forget there's a difference between a player doing nothing, and a player not doing what you specifically want them to be doing. If Emery sent Zoniolo into that game with those exact instructions then he's probably got a 10 out of 10 and a gold star in the team review.
-
Poor goal to concede I thought? ;) ;)
-
I agree, I thought Zaniolo did a very good job of effectively being our target man for the quick ball to break their press and after about half an hour you could see their midfield backed right off us because of it. That's why it also made sense to change things whe we did to give them a different problem that they also failed to handle.
The only complaint I have about Zaniolo right now is that he wants an extra touch or an extra second to pick what to do, he'll learn and in the meantime he's a really useful option to do jobs like he did at the weekend.
-
Zaniolo seems a little bit too eager at times, him overrunning it for Watkins goal was a good example. Diaby was making the same run but managed to pull back and not end up offside. But the flip of that is he seems very enthusiastic and seems to have completely bought in to the club and the team and what they're trying to do. So no complaints from me about him.
-
I’ll take a player being overly enthusiastic every day of the week.
-
He is a solid back-up to Ramsey and has a physical presence, which is also very useful and not something we have a lot of in this squad.
-
6 goals and not 1 header....great stuff from the Villa.

Havent they started playing that Kaiser Chiefs I predict a riot just before the Ozzy song?? I was on the concourse finishing my pint, but sure Ive heard it before the last two games, bit random.

There's the Terrace View and the Lower Grounds, the badge fuckup, the ticket prices but that, that my friend is the final straw.

They've been playing Ozzy since the first championship season. I really like it.

Brilliant performance on Saturday. Always a good thing when no-one is sure who to give MoTM to.
Probably goes down as the second most impressive performance under Unai. Against Newcastle, I recall us being in control for the whole match, whereas Brighton pushed us hard for fifteen minutes after the break.
