Wouldn’t be surprised if Bailey is out for a couple of weeks after he hobbled off…think Ollie starts too
-
What is an "off round"?
-
This is a fascinating match to me. I think Hibs will struggle with our midfield despite the fact they will play out of their skins. I trust we will be fully up for it and outclass them.
-
Is this likely to be on TV? I can't see any details online yet? Ta.

0-1. Kent Neilson.

Unlikely to see Archer start. Emery prefers Duran.

Why is that mate, is it a Proclaimers thing?

1-3. They will score early on, we will all groan, and then then our tactical steamroller will lay them to rest.

Haha. I don't mind the Proclaimers to be fair, mate. They're clearly shite, but harmless nonetheless.
As with Celtic, most Hibs fans I've met are bellends. Don't like either of them and their nonsense. I'm sure there are lovely ones out there somewhere 😂
-
I think Unai will pick a strong side but will also leave out Kamara, Watkins and Cash as we can't afford to lose them to injury at the moment. I wonder whether we see the formation that finished the game yesterday? I also think Emi will be rested and wouldn't be surprised if we see the youngster, instead of Olsen.
-
Anything other than a win would be a disappointment. They seem to think we're gonna smash them. And we really should.
FTF
-
I'm really looking forward to this. It's so exciting to be involved in European football again and to draw Hibernian of all possible teams just adds to it for me.
-
Some of the comments during the other Hibs games suggested they would try to kick us off the field. Given our run of luck I'm just hoping we get through it without adding another long term injury.

That's easier said than done these days when Premier League players are super athletes built like brick shithouses. I'd admire the chutzpah of any Hibs player that tries to dish out some treatment to Diego Carlos.
-
We are better than them, they will be massively up for it so we need to keep our heads and let our superiority show over time.
-
As far as I can see this is not being televised. Is that right?

Some suggestions on twitter (yeah, I know) that it's going to be on BBC Scotland (channel 864 on sky). Not showing on their listings so may be it's bollox or maybe it's going to be behind the red button or some other stuff.

I'm hoping we go strong on Wednesday. Be under no illusions, for us the final is in May. For Hibs, the final is Wednesday night. They will be well up for it and we don't want to give ourselves a massive task to do at Villa Park next week. Let's kill them off up there.
-
I think Hibs will fly out the traps emboldened by the home crowd and we will need to be especially focused early on. Thereafter I think we will control the game and win comfortably.

I agree
Watched the first leg of the last round, they lack quality (massively) but they have endeavour.
Be good to grind that little idiot into the dug out ground though.
-
I can see us beating Hibernian 3-1.
-
For those going, Port O'Leith is a good pub and a couple of others nect to it.
Generally found Hibs fans to be an affable lot.
-
I think we should take this as seriously as a final, try to get the tie wrapped up, or as good as, in the first leg. We had an easy day yesterday, and Burnely at the weekend. Not to underestimate Burnley, but I'd rather be able to rest a few players before Liverpool than have to play the same starting 11 4 games in a row.
-
27-0 to us
-
get your prayer mats out
-
Hibs will come at us with a lot of energy early on. This is a massive game for them. But we will stay calm, control the ball and take all the steam out of their attack. We will hit them on the break and make them open up a bit more. That’s when we will kill off the game. I reckon by the end it’s 3-0.
-
For those going, Port O'Leith is a good pub and a couple of others nect to it.

My Edinburgh recommendations:
- Pubs will be open til 3am as it's the festival, and clubs until 5am. There are a couple of (effectively) late opening pubs - Whistle Binkies (South Bridge), and just around the corner Banshee Labyrinth (Niddry St). The former usually has indie-type bands playing live, the latter has a cinema and usually rock/metal playing over the speakers. Old town.
- If yer looking for food in the city centre, then Made In Italy (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186525-d1471488-Reviews-Made_in_Italy-Edinburgh_Scotland.html) in the Grassmarket is cheap (for the city centre) and good.
- Also good in the city centre, and definitely very cheap - Mosque Kitchen (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186525-d8551725-Reviews-The_Original_Mosque_Kitchen_Cafe-Edinburgh_Scotland.html). If you like a curry, you like lots of it, and you don't want to spend a fortune ... this is yer place.
- I would highly, highly recommend getting some drinks from an offy and going up Calton Hill for sunset (or sunrise..). Lovely views over the north & west of the city incl. Hibs ground, and you don't need ti be especially fit to get up there. It's illegal to drink outdoors, mind, but in my experience the police highly unlikely to bother you up there as long as you're not being a twat. No, just read - you're actually fine in Edinburgh, it's Glasgow where they're arsey about outdoor drinking (though I was given a bollocking by a policeman in Dumfries for doing that once, so I assume there's other places where you're not allowed to drink as well)

Yes i concur. 'I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)' is a bit tame to someone who normally likes 'Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Rocket Queen' etc
Anyway, glad it's on TV and i'm going to go with a 2-1 win.

Hmmmm. The opportunity to rotate and rest players will come if we reach the league format so at this early stage of the season, with a Sunday game next, on a roll from the last game we should play our strongest side. All that work last season could be thrown away rather simply and we'll emerge with egg on our faces.
0-2

I'd think maybe 1 or two changes with regular starters pencilled in for change around the hour mark if everything is going well.

Accommodation only I think. I was chatting to a former barman from there yesterday and mentioned that I noticed that the outside had been painted and he said that it was flats so maybe the Hibs fan had an airbnb.

Well not bollocks at all. He played for them and made 57 appearances scoring 11 goals between 89 and 91, so that’s probably when friendly was?

They're probably about similar standard to Stevenage Borough...

Yes. You don’t work hard over 38 games season to achieve qualification and then throw it away in one game. Reaching the League stage is absolutely essential to ensure last seasons effort is not wasted. Play the strongest available team.
-
They're probably about similar standard to Stevenage Borough...
Oh shit
-
All joking aside I would go full strength for this and try to kill the tie off. I'm sure the pre match Stevenage thread said similar things about rotating the team and then people were mad when we lost.
-

3-0 to Hibs.
-

I'd go strong and get the tie 'won' if possible on Weds, as the fixture change now means we've 4 days rest after. Then rest/bench players for the home leg, as that game's only 3 days before Liverpool away.

Our only previous competitive game north of the border.
An FA Cup 4th round game against Queens Park in Glasgow. Lost 6-1 and they went on to win the Cup.
What's more it looks like we had a bigger following then than we will have on Wednesday.
They were drawn at home against Aston Villa in the fourth round, but the match was called into doubt when it was scheduled to take place on the same date and location as Queen's Park's match against Hibernian F.C. in the Scottish Cup. But Queen's and their Scottish opponents agreed to postpone the match for two weeks. There was a great deal of interest by the spectators from Birmingham, and three special trains were laid on to transport them to Glasgow for the game with more than 1200 of them travelling north of the border. Around 10,000 fans filled the ground where they watched Queen's Park defeat Aston Villa 6–1.

I would go strong for all the reasons others have said, but my head tells me Unai will make some changes.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see this starting 11:
Olsen
Chambers
Konsa
Carlos
Digne (if sold by then Revan)
Luiz
Tielemans
Mcginn
Bidace
Watkins
Duran
Weather the early storm, keep a clean sheet, nick one before half time to quiet the crowd, finish the job second half: 2-0 (Watkins, Tielemans).

Yes you're right. However....Following the match, the referee admitted that at one point during the game the ball had passed the Blackburn goal line, but as Queen's Park did not attempt to claim the goal, it was not awarded.

Yes. No Scottish team has won the FA Cup. Helped by us knocking Rangers out in the Semis in 1897.
Queen's Park really should have won it.

Emery has said it was nothing to worry about.
Not sure if thats good or bad, lol.
Only having a little lighthearted fun, of course its good news if he is fit.
He was alright performance wise on Sunday, so lets hope that if he is fit & can play, he can take his form & be useful against a club of Hibs quality.

Well he was apparently involved in some argy bargy after the match so I assumed he wasn't too badly hurt

The thing about Emry and our squad is that there is no obvious starting line-up,
I'd not be surprised to see the 3421 we finished the game with on Sunday being used to control the game early on, then switching to the 4222 we play.
I wouldn't even put money on Unai letting SJM start the game.

Pictures of him training now on Pravda FB.

The video of them winning the Scottish Cup (with SJM in the team) and them singing Sunshine on Leith is, to be fair, amazing.
I think a tight game up there , one goal in it, before we smash them in the home leg

Birmingham Live have these quotes from Emery;
"Asked if Zaniolo could feature at Easter Road, Emery said:
"Hopefully yes I think so. Of course, we closed his signing on Friday, and on Saturday it was impossible to take his registration.
He is fit because he was training with his team and of course, we will need players helping us. He has experiences. He won the Conference League with Rome and we are happy with him."
So looks like he should be available.

If the game had been on the Thursday we'd have been up there in the home end and it wouldn't have been a problem to sing along at all. It might be a problem not to join in if they sing it at our place.

Don't think Emery has won a cup game with us has he..... Man u away in the League cup and Stevenage at home in the FA. I might be wrong, but think Gerrard was still in charge at Bolton.

Boyhood Birmingham City fan Joe Newell admits he would love to help Hibernian stun Aston Villa and book a place in the Europa Conference League group stage.
The 30-year-old grew up in Tamworth and was a Blues season-ticket holder who used to cheer them on from the St Andrew’s stands in the Second City derby. Newell has close friends and family members – including his fiancée – who are Villa fans, adding a bit of extra spice to the Battle of Britain play-off round showdown for the midfielder.
“There’s one dodgy picture of me in a Villa top when I was four but I’m a Blues fan, always have been,” he said ahead of Wednesday’s qualifying play-off first leg at Easter Road. “There’s a lot more Villa where I’m from. My fiancée is Villa, my dad’s Blues, his brother is Villa. My best mate is diehard Villa.
“Listen, I’d love to beat them, don’t get me wrong. But whether it was Sunday at home to Raith in the cup or Villa at home on Wednesday, you go into each game trying to win. I won’t let that (being a Birmingham fan) get into my thinking too much.”
Newell has faced the Villans twice before in the Championship as a Rotherham United player in 2017 and 2019 but he knows the stakes are higher on this occasion considering the prize of European group-stage football for the winner. He also knows Villa, who finished seventh in the Premier League last term, are a far stronger proposition now than when he last encountered them.
“We probably couldn’t have got a harder draw but both legs will be very special,” said Newell, whose side have already eliminated Andorrans Inter d’Escaldes and Swiss side Luzern this summer. “No matter what the outcome, we’ve got to enjoy it, work hard and give a good account of ourselves.
“Some people would call us underdogs in the Luzern game but they were a top side and we scored five goals and got through.
“Villa are a massive club, their finances will be chalk and cheese compared to us, they’ve just put four past Everton at the weekend, so we know how hard it will be. But it’s football, it’s a sell-out at Easter Road and anything can happen.
“I’m really excited. We’re buzzing, the mood’s very good. We’ve got a lot of confidence and excitement going into the game. We know it’s obviously going to be a tough game against a top side, a massive club, but this is what you want to do, growing up you want to play in these games.
“The European games are a pleasure to play in. There were so many big games last year that we went into thinking about (the possibility of) these nights.
“We grafted so hard to make the top six and then to make the European places for this reason. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far. We’ve got two more games to try and get into the group stages, which would obviously be amazing.”

We’ve got two more games to try and get into the group stages, which would obviously be amazing.”
you forgot to mention he's a Hibs ace

Tad nervous about this one, Villa being Villa it could be a banana skin. Head says we win comfortably though.

Lived here since 84. have met about five.
Although for them I guess that is alot.

Need to go strong with our line-up. We don't want any Rapid Vienna repeats, or Stevenage!! Hibernian will be well fired up for this....

Should be okay, as long as we don't start Habib Beye.
-
Please no Olsen.
-
5-0 villa. Will destroy them hopefully
-
The we’ll have enough and should be okay stuff worries me
Some people have no idea how up for it Hibbs will be
We need to go with a strong team and a focused not taking anything for granted attitude, or we’ll lose

I reckon (well hope) that the players worked so hard to get there, they won't want to throw it away and we have a manager who wants to win the whole thing but yeah, it's going to be tougher than people think.
-
I think we'll go strong, hence the very un-Villa triple substitution with a quarter of the game (plus stoppage) to go on Saturday. Though I think Duran might start.
-
I would like to see Robin stretch his awesome frame across the goal and dominate the box tonight, which I know the Viking can do😊
-
Ive got a ‘banana skin’ feeling about this one, hoping for an early goal.
-
Come on Villa!
-
if Villa score early and it could be 4 again....

I think it'll be 0-0

There's a strange smell in the air today.
A sort of mixture of fire plus flesh.
Ah yes.
A FUNERALLING
-
I imagine they'll come out the blocks, the crowd will be raucous so we just have to get hold of it early on, slow the temp down to walking pace to quieten the crowd. get the first and the flood gates will open, the tie will be over 2nd leg a formality. bingo!
-
I am genuinely nervous about this fixture. Maybe because there is so much riding on it. Maybe because we know they'll be up for this more than possibly any other opponent we could have drawn.
I'd snap your hand off for a draw right now, which is ridiculous, really. We should be beating these 9 times out of 10, and probably will, but I will continue shitting it until we're two goals clear...
-
Yes, it being the Villa, it's not hard to envision 10 minutes of injury time and them lumping it forward and scoring a jammy goal off a deflection to win it.
-
Are Villa and Hibs the only 2 British and/or Irish teams left in this competition now? I know there were a few still there last qualifying round.
-

Wise move, wise move! ;)

Did Derry City, the very definition of Irish/British, not make it through?

Today is the first official competitive game vs Hibernian.
We’ve played them few times in the past:
14-Oct-1991 - Away - Lost 2-4
5-Aug-1989 - Home - Won 1-0
20-Oct-1969 - Away - Won 4-1
11-Feb-1950 - Home - Won 5-2
18-Apr-1896 - Away - Won 5-2
4-Apr-1896 - Home - Lost 1-2
9-Apr-1887 - Home - Won 3-0
1-Jan-1887 - Away - Won 8-3
26-Apr-1886 - Home - Won 2-1
The natives got restless following our 8-3 win and a riot broke out. The Edinburgh Evening Dispatch reporter came the Villa’s aid to help escort them back to the changing rooms. Unfortunately, Freddie Dawson mistook him for a hooligan and promptly bopped him on the nose. The Edinburgh Evening Dispatch published his apology the next day.

Lost on penalties in the last round.
Annoyingly, TNS could've feasibly got to the group stages this year. Lost 4-3 to Swift Hesperange - they lost 4-3 to Struga (Macedonia), and Struga have Breiðablik (Iceland) ... so all games that they could've feasibly won (Breiðablik entered the Champions League in the round before TNS)

George Ramsay, Manager. Interesting.
-
Will be interesting to see the line-up and if we can make the second leg redundant, even more so...it's getting harder to throw kids in! Kellyman probably the main one who could benefit.

Probably irrelevant but I noticed Kellyman is now in the squad list for Fantasy Premier League, he wasn't there at the start of the season. I do think we'll see a bit of him this season. He'll be 18 in September so, if we're adopting this new approach of 21/22 being over the hill, he's exactly the age that we should start giving him minutes.

Well yes! Obviously it has been established in many “ public enquires” that this gentleman was never a football manager.

I think I'm right in saying he's the first youth product to come through and train with the first-team under Emery? Everyone else made their 'breakthrough' to first-team training under previous managers?
It will be interesting to see how Unai handles him.
-
Get the job done tonight Villa . Be nice if we were a few up so we can start thinking about Sunday from 60 mins onwards

He looks like he could do with bulking up a little but he's very tall, which is something it feels like we're lacking a bit. And someone like Torres isn't exactly built like Diego Carlos, but seems to do alright. I think it's a good age to give him some game time, then come January he's either shown enough to keep integrating him into the first team, or, he's shown enough to interest a decent team in loaning him, or, worst case scenario, he's shown he drops back down to the U21s and we reassess in the summer.

I presume there will be no Archer, Bidace in the squad. With the injuries we have, might need a third keeper on the bench!

It seemed to be the lucky omen in the spring which propelled us to 7th (and even 5th for a while). 8)

If we were stuck can you bring a keeper on to play outfield? I've seen outfield players go in goal before, but never the other way around.

Nigel Spink came on for the injured Ian Taylor in the last minute at QPR back in 1995. It turned out to be his final appearance for us.
-
Any reports of chairs being thrown across town squares and local gangs on motorcycles looking for trouble yet?

I can imagine Olsen coming on to close out a game if we get too many more injuries. Score the winner that takes us into the group stages.

Olsen will probably start in goal.

Martinez coming on to score the winning goal does sound more likely.

Would Emery want to encourage him after the Arsenal game? lol.

None yet, the much vaunted Hibs firm haven't showed up. What time does the 'B6 Ultras' march to the stadium start at?

Only Young Cuellar and Petrov would be anywhere near the squad now, perhaps Guzan on the bench.
I think tonight will be like a cup tie against lower league opposition. They will come out like a house on fire and we need to take the sting out of it and then pick them off as fatigue sets in. It will be closer than we expect. 1-3.
-
It's why I think we'll go 3421 - control the game for 20 mins then put our foot on the gas.

I think Beye played Left Back and Cuellar on the Right. Gave away a needless corner for Rapid goal.

No, but someone flung (slung?) a rat from their shoe and it sailed over Snappy Snaps, Jessops and Dixons in one fell swoop.

Looking at their forum, the Hibs fans seem alright.
-
I'd imagine the biggest chance of any issues is with PAOK fans. And i'd also imagine that's a pretty slim chance.

I'd be genuinely concerned about going to any Greek team away, there's basically violence before every match as all domestic games have no away fans so European ties is when the ultras can get their fix.

No chairs being disturbed or motorbikes in Grassmarket so far.
-
Hibs always seem like a good bunch, so hopefully no aggro on either side.

They must be the friendliest fans in Scotland. Plenty have Villa as their 'English team' though that may be because of SJM. They're all excited to see him back this evening.

Did I read that someone was stabbed to death at a game in Greece recently?
-
It was this
A reminder that European matches aren't all jolly fun days.
AEK Athens v Dinamo Zagreb CL qualifier has been postponed.
A man has died after being stabbed in violence among fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb in Athens, police said.
The man was stabbed several times in clashes among fans of both clubs outside AEK’s stadium in Nea Philadelphia late on Monday, a police official said. Police said 100 to 120 Dinamo fans had shown up late on Monday near the AEK stadium, and where AEK fans had gathered.
Clashes broke out more than an hour after the visiting team’s training session ended and the team had left the stadium, with fans from both sides hurling flares, makeshift explosives and stones, police said.
Three Greek and five Croatian fans were also injured and being treated, and 98 people were arrested over taking part in the violence, the police official said.
Dinamo condemned the incident. “Such events are not in line with the values and ethics we promote as a club and community,” they said in a statement.
A Greek police spokesperson said the Champions League qualifying-round match between AEK and Dinamo scheduled to take place at AEK’s stadium on Tuesday had been postponed.
Greek football has been plagued by violence on and off the pitch and authorities have repeatedly promised to clean up the game. Fights between fans are frequent before or after a game despite heavy fines.

Just found out my mate lives a 17 minute walk from Easter Road. But she's American and has no interest in that soccer.

Surely we wont take that risk

Olsen will probably start in goal.
that would be fucking stupid
-
Given that the game is taking place at Easter Road, perhaps we can exhort the team to 'crucify' Hibernian rather than the 'funeralling' that we usually demand. At the same time it is to be hoped that Oliver Watkins Esq can 'ressurrect' his scoring boots so we can all give praise to McGrath.
-
Olsen will probably start in goal.
that would be fucking stupid
I wouldn't put Olsen in goal if we were playing the Andorra la Vella Tobacconist Association 2nd XI.
