Sat 20th May at Anfield. 3pm
0-1 to the Villa. FTF!
-
I’m far too confident for this game then I have any right to be.
Imagine if spurs lose the early game and we know a win would pretty much guarantee Europe?
Anyway, back in the real world, 2-1 Liverpool.
-
I’m going to this, first time at Anfield in all my 49 years. I am also feeling confident for some reason as i was before Spurs. They’ve won 7 on the bounce, but a couple of those were 1-0 home wins over Fulham and Brentford, that arguably could of been draws. Still they have a forward line to be fearful off, but Im not convinced by their midfield or defence.
I hope Emery makes one change for this, hopefully bringing in Kamara for Bailey and shifting McGinn out to the right, to give us a solid looking four across the middle.
An unlikely 2-1 to us (Watkins, McGinn).
-
Them 0-1 Us, and Brentford to beat Spurs.
-
We've earned the right to go to Anfield with confidence and so we should given the season we have had. They are on a good run, 7 straight wins but sequences such as that are there to be bought to an end and who better than us to do it? Having said that, they have a CL place to aim for alongside our own ambitions but fortune favours the brave.
0-1

2 things I know for sure:
1. Unai will have a detailed game plan which will be carried out by the team.
2. We will give them a thorough test, or in the old vernacular, "we will give them a game".
I expect us to score at least once, but the odds favour them.
-
2-0.

And the refs. That sounds right to me but hope we can get what might be a vital point.
-
Fear that we are coming up against them at the worst possible time.
Didn't think we'd lose at Man Utd or Wolves but think we will lose this one.
3-1 to them.
-

So will the ref. Otherwise, nothing to fear, Anfield has been a happy hunting ground for us over the years.
-
I hope Unai and his team were at the crisp packet stadium last night and i hope he sees that playing such a high line (especially as the pundits now keep pointing it out) could be suicidal with their front 3.
Need a strong ref and VAR team but with them chasing a chumps league place i very much doubt we will get anything go our way.
Just hope we have a chance still going into the Brighton game as that really would be a cup final atmosphere
I fear a low defeat 1-0 with something contentious
-
If we score first then 1-2 or 2-2. If they score first then 2-0 or 2-1. Think I've pretty much covered all bases there so I can claim after the game that I'm a genius.
-
Its like a huge European game for Unai Emery and I think we'll go close .
It may not be enough but we're a huge obstacle in the road these days for the top sides.
A virtually fully fit squad available so I'm going for a 2-2 draw to set us up for the final game.
What an an achievement that would be for the manager and players.
-
2-1 Villa win.
-
We'll get something here.
FTF
-
Liverpool are on a charge, it’ll be bloody tough. Hopefully we can repay them for the game we gave away post the World Cup.
-
If we score first then 1-2 or 2-2. If they score first then 2-0 or 2-1. Think I've pretty much covered all bases there so I can claim after the game that I'm a genius.
You're clearly a man of foresight! How's your Spanish?
-
Ollie to score and do a rock-a-bye-baby celebration. Them to get a soft equaliser. Trez to hit the post. Barkley to not give a shit and lose the ball leading to their late winner.
-
Keep TAA quiet and we win
-

1-1 then.

We will score first but, although our player was clearly in his own half, when the ball was kicked, VAR used a different match against them to show he was offside. They then get a penalty when one of their players clearly handles the ball, trips one of our defenders. VAR then takes a look and say, nothing to see there and give Liverpool 2 goals to compensate for us wasting VAR’s time and To get Klopp off their backs.
We then score in the 75th minute but the referee blows for full time so it doesn’t count. Result 0-2!!
-
Tough game but we’ll get something. If you listen to Sky it’ll be an end of season celebration where players leaving will get some minutes. I hope Klopp listens to them because we aren’t going there scared of them. 2-1 Villa.
-
3-1 Them
They are back to something resembling their best, have a few players playing their last game at Anfield and have a very good home record.
-
I'd be prepared to start 1-0 down but have a straight ref.
-
Have just renewed my season ticket but have got VAR involved as the price is incredibly high and unbelievable!!
-
Definitely want Kamara playing in this one. We need to be able to play through their high press.
-
Keep TAA quiet and we win
I'm looking forward to seeing Moreno marauding into the spaces Trent leaves behind now he has some new role no one outside of sky's totally biased analysts can possibly be trusted to understand.
-
Definitely want Kamara playing in this one. We need to be able to play through their high press.
What with there high press and our high line and vice-versa, there will be 20 players camped all within the width of the center circle!
-
Liverpool are set up as a team perfectly for us to get at them and we can take advantage as an away team. I see us tactically comimg away with this as a 2-0 away win.
Watkinez has 5 in 5 v Liverpool I think he and Ramosy will score.

I actually love this Footy analysis!!

Meanwhile, back to VAR reality!!

Villa Are Royalty
Them 1 Us 2
We have the better manager.

No doubt we'll be victim to another piece of Liverpool cheating and referee/VAR incompetence.
Defeat.

Surely you meant to call him 'Trent'?
-
I'm getting annoyed at the assumption that Liverpool have already beaten us on Saturday.
-
Fear that we are coming up against them at the worst possible time.
We fear nobody.
-
I'm getting annoyed at the assumption that Liverpool have already beaten us on Saturday.
Agree.
Outside of being a supporter we've just been dismissed out of hand.
Neville and Carragher didn't even mention the fact that we might have a bit of a say in the game. It was literally Liverpool will win both of their remaining games.
Hugely disrespectful and I hope we screw up the party at the weekend.

I can see us getting a point here. I think we'll need to scrap the high line at Anfield

There is absolutely no way they'll win without that helping hand.

As someone has already stated I'm not sure how it'll go down but Moreno should be a nightmare for Trent in his new right-back-not-right-back position. Let's see how well Henderson can fill the gaps.
-
Any player is a nightmare for Alexander Arnold from a defensive point of view be it right back or new fangled role.
Southgate was spot on not playing him as right back for TAA is livability at defending.
-

It can go either way, they are now playing to put him in the quarter Back Roll.
He has got a great range of passing, so we need to make sure he does not have the freedom of the park.
Ramsey on that side is a weakness defensively, I would consider putting SJM over there.

Whenever me and my mate have a Toby Carvery before an away game we concede 3 goals.
A rare occasion of this failing was Liverpool away. We had a Toby Carvery and we still won 3-1 with Benteke.
Why this is the case, I don't know. We thought at one point it was down to the number of yorkshire puddings we stole when the guy wasn't looking. But taking the whole plate in Swindon was deemed inconclusive as it ended in a last minute 3-2 win.
I'm trying hard to work out whether we should have one or not. It could very well be the biggest factor in Saturday's result. I'm just surprised Emery hasn't been in touch to give us instructions in how to proceed.
-
Teams have tried going long and diagonal with a bit more success lately. That’s what Liverpool will be trying via Arnold.

Thank McGrath for this.
And I thought I was "obsessed/superstitious" with regard to my many pairs of lucky pants!
Keep up the good work Dogtanian!

On the superstition thing, I had a few weeks trying to drink less caffeine recently and realised that against man u and wolves I'd used decaf in my villa mug on matchday. Went back to normal coffee against spurs.
So I'd like to say sorry to you all, it won't happen again!

Notice that Spurs kick off at 12.30 - so we will all now the result of their game before ours starts.

It's clear that you shouldn't have a Toby Carvery before most away games, but should before Liverpool away as we'll then score 3.
A bigger issue may be the H&V gourmands who will tell you that Toby Carveries are sh*t anyway.
-
I'm going to this.
100% away win record for me so far, and not counting on anything less than a win. 1-2 Villa

Give us your address, Paul, I'm sending you a crate of Pro Plus.

We’re gonna lose this I just hope it’s a 1 goal loss, to give us a chance on the last day
So that’s me all positive
-
Strangely confident that we will get something out of this game. If we can go into the last game even one point ahead of Spurs then it will be massive.
-
If we play a high line again all I know is I'll be papping my pants all game. Liverpool are not Spurs (sadly).
-
Notice that Spurs kick off at 12.30 - so we will all now the result of their game before ours starts.
Worst case scenario, Spurs win 2 0, we lose 2 0 and its all over pretty much. Think them going first is a real help as I think if we end up Saturday no worse than a point behind them we will overtake on the last day.
-
Away win, 2-1. Fcuk them

-

Yeah, when I've looked at RAWK recently the vibe is very much, Newcastle and Yanited are bound to drop points whilst we're beating Villa.
-
Only Manure (12) and Chelsea (7), have more wins than us at Anfield in the Prem with 6.
And we have presumably played 4 less times there than Chelsea.
They seem to be on a roll, but when I've watched them recently, haven't looked that great. If we can stop Salah, we've got a chance.
-
Law of football averages says they are due to drop a couple of points imminently. We have the team and the manager to do that.
-
Exploiting the space behind TAA is the key to us getting anything here.
I think we will and get a 1-1 although frustratingly that may not be enough to finish 7th.
-

It 'feels' like we have a decent record there but that stat is still a surprise. Hopefully we make it 7 on Sat.

The Benteke game and the one when Gerrard got sent off come to mind, but my favourite was pre Prem when Andy Gray was in his pomp.
-

Even a win quite possibly won't be enough. If Spurs win both remaining games 1-0, then we'd have to beat Liverpool and Brighton by a combined score of 5-0 or equivalent.
-
We have to look after our own business which is going to be hard enough. Spurs are very hot and cold so they could fuck up both games, and especially if they need to win at Leeds. Brighton were brilliant at The Bottlehad last weekend but tonight won’t be easy and Man City. They should win vs Southampton. We really need to hope we are in a position to win a place come the Brighton game. And even then it might not be enough if other results go against us. But given our improvement since Emery came in even being in with a chance to qualify when we play Brighton is some achievement.

This is true but Brentford will be no mugs at Spurs. Even without Toney they are a solid team and also have the incentive that by beating Spurs they will only be a point behind them.
The fact that they still have something to play for is a real positive.
-
It would be the most Villa thing ever for Spurs to lose both games, we draw both, then Brentford go above us with a win and a draw.
-

Ha, ha, wouldn't it just!

It would be the most Spurs thing ever to be in the driving seat to pip Villa to the last European spot and then finish 3rd in a 2 horse race to Brentford.

This will all be about to happen before a Jack Grealish 94th minute winner at Brentford. Still don't think I'd forgive him.

I was at the 5-1 the season before, but that game at Anfield is probably my earliest memory of watching us on MOTD.

I see Klopp the twat has got a two game touchline ban. I assume it starts with our game. I doubt it changes much in terms of the match, but I'm sure the Asst ref and 4th official in particular are delighted

I was at both games as well - the away one was November 5th and the Annie Road End showered us with fireworks at the start of the match. The locals were a bit miffed at the end as well

I’d always been a Villa fan in name as it was my family team, & I’d been taken to a few games, but this was literally the 2nd week of a lightbulb coming on.
The previous week I watched us beat Man U 2-1 from The Holte End, then the following week I watched this on MOTD having been out on a bonfire on wasteland at the back of our house eating jacket potatoes from the embers in the pouring rain. Came in, dried off, pyjamas on, fell in love with Frank Carrodus all in white with angelic blonde curls looking so sad when he scored an own goal.
My love of the underdog starts there.

Nice, we're clearly of a similar vintage but your memories of that particular MOTD are a lot more vivid and captivating than mine.

I think it might have quite a big influence on the match, not having him on the touchline.

The Champions League jig is up for Liverpool now that Newcastle have won their game in hand.
Just give starts to all their players playing their last games for the club and pretend it's an end of season friendly, Jurgen - with your ban, you can even put your feet up and watch from a box.
-
Eh? They're a point behind Man U
-

Yeah but Man Ure have a game in hand and it's against the worse team in the league (yeah, even Saints beat them twice this season), Chelsea!

Didn't Harewood score a cracker at Anfield for us once? Feel like Crouch may have scored for us against them too.

Klopp has been given a touchline ban, effective immediately, so we won't have to see his stupid grinning face on the touchline tomorrow. Hopefully that will help us.
I quite like him as a manager, but his intimidation antics getting into the faces of the match officials is starting to grate.

I used to like Klopp, socialist and all that but he was so dismissive and disrespectful to our kids before and after the Covid Cup Tie I lost all respect for him and now I actively dislike the grinning twat.
Let alone his antics towards officials, I can't stand the way he laughs when it's going tits up for his side. He's not fooling anyone, you know inside that he's absolutely raging. I hate that pathetic fist pump that he aims downwards and he looks shit without glasses. And he's far to old for a baseball cap, it might as well have F1 on it. I bet he loves that rubbish.

I was there that day too. I remember the Kop singing ‘Same old Deano, always missing’ shortly before he buried the winner in front of them.
I think we were better than them in the FA Cup QF too (was that the year before?). That defeat really hurt as it should have been our year.

He was. It ends how it always ends, and it was the end for him as a manager too, but in three years he rebuit a team that just avoided relegation, won a cup, nearly won the league and gave us some of the best football I've seen at times.
Yes he had the money from Platty but you've got to use it well and he didn't fuck about. There was a sense of urgency and ambition that's often been lacking and I feel now with Emery.

I always hate playing these. Decisions from all of the officials always go their way. They cheat & foul & get away with all manner of shit while their banshee crowd shout "handball" in a phlegm induced high pitch whine at every opportunity to influence the officials. Then when we invariably get screwed out of the game by the hypocritical whiny little bitch crowd led officials, a load of my mates, who are Devon born "adopted scousers" despite never going further north than Exeter in their lives have the audacity to tell me over & over that my home town club is shit. If they weren't cowards & supported their hometown club of Plymouth, then they couldn't ever have that opportunity. Which is why they chose a club from the opposite end of the country that they have fuck all association with other than the happy coincidence of being one of the most successful. Liverpool fans, especially the Devon/Brummy "adopted scousers", are by far some of the worst fans in the world. Most people hate Manchester United fans, & for good reason, but Liverpool are the original scumbag set of fans. Their arrogance is legendary & I despise them & their whole club. Which is why we will lose this game because fate absolutely hates me. 😂

That was my thought too when I looked at both team sheets. Their main man being a slightly porky and ‘seen better days’ John Barnes. That said he did produce a couple of excellent moments I noticed.

The early 1990's were really good; my best-ever away in the League was SheffW for BFR first game - wow, it was amazing. The LCF vs RedManc was also a brilliant occasion.
-
I've been to Anfield several times; usually to see Villa getting valiantly beaten. The game that sticks out for me was the one we won 3-1 when the Scouse Fraud (Slippy) got sent off for trying to decapitate Boeteng.
The one that remains most impressive was the Benteke-Weimann game (when our best player was - I thought - the ill-fated Chris Herd).
-

I lost my GCSEs to that game.

2-1 Villa

We robbed Slippy of his pre-ordained glorious farewell of a FA Cup triumph. Let’s piss on Firmino’s chips too (not that I have any strong feelings about him, I’m just a misery guts).

The Benteke 3-1 is probably my favourite away day. We played like prime Brazil and if you look at our team that day then it is frankly astonishing. Lambert, what a manager! :) Everyone sang the full 12 Paul McGrath in time for Christmas.

Yeah, and then we lost to Chelsea, Spurs and Wigan 15-0 combined before losing at Millwall and Bradford. The most embarassing month in our Villa lives and the fcuker somehow survived it.

I think we’ll get something today, 1-1 I’ve gone for

16 Bournemouth Lions by mini bus today. I'm on my own, travelling from South West Wales. First solo away trip from these parts. Looking forward to a new journey and hopefully Villa getting 3 points against 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'.UTV

Been to Anfield once. We scored after 10 minutes and didn't hear a peep out of their fans for the rest of the game.
Also thought Anfield was far worse than Old Trafford for tourist daytrippers.
-
Klopp is buttering us up. Reckons we will be serious challengers for top four next season.
Have a feeling we will sneak this one.
1-2 to the Claret & Blue.
-
Got everything firmly crossed that we can come out of this weekend still in with a chance of qualifying for Europe next weekend.
I have a sneaky feeling that we will get something today, but still may need favours from Brentford and Southampton.
-
I'm nervous about today. I can't watch due to work commitments so will follow media updates and I'm sort of glad in a way.
But it's this feeling I need to dismiss on a regular basis. The desire to scream at the players to get rid and the feeling of panic when we pass it about at the back has abated almost completely so this is the next step. I'm certain the Manager and players will be walking onto the pitch with calm confidence and that's what we need to follow as fans.

Let’s hope we’ve learned from our last meeting and also hope Salah isn’t on that sort of form again. He was brilliant that game.
2-2
-
I hope it’s a Firmino love in with the Kop singing, all smiles and waves whilst we quietly dismantle their day
, the scouse condescending wankers.

Have you seen that fist pump thing he's doing with the supporters now after a game? Twat.
I beg to differ - he’s only ever said nice things about Aston Villa.

Probably, like Ferguson, because they've beaten us in 7 of the 8 League games we've played since he's been there.

No need to cross anything we’ll have a chance whatever happens, even if we lose and Spurs win. Not a very good chance, but a chance all the same.

One of my least favourite fixtures of the season.
Too much riding on it. I might opt not to watch and go with whatever transpires come final whistle.
-
Ideas on pubs, told Arkles are not letting Villa in.

This. All of this.
Possibly my least favourite fixture.
Everyone knows what they'll do, coming out of the blocks like a rampant cyclone. I just hope we repel it and smash them.

Me too. I’ve found it hard watching us in recent weeks. I know I need to grow a pair. Today is such a massive game. Come out today with anything at all and hope results go our way, then it may very well leave us needing a win at home to jump past Brighton into a top 7 spot. So many ifs though.
-
They’re wearing next season’s new kit, pushing for the top 4 and saving goodbye to Firmino…we can spoil the party.

Yep, that's my plan. Gone to visit my parents, will check the score at 5.40pm (when my train leaves). Either going to be a rubbish or amazing journey home.
-
I’m not so worried about Liverpool as I am with VAR and referee’s decision going against us.
-
Just watching the preview of the match on Football Focus. It may shock you to know it's being conducted exclusively from Liverpool's point of view.
Oh hold on they are talking about Villa now.
-
This is what we've been waiting over a decade for. An end of season game at the top end of the table against a top side with Europe riding on it. I can't wait.

And you know it will have wound up our local rivals to hear Dion and Alex Scott talking up the noisy atmosphere at Villa Park, adding that no opposition would fancy playing at our "fortress" when it's full.
-
I worry about our high line in this one. Here's hoping, but i'm not too confident.
-
The game plan Emery has might be phenomenal. I support his methods wholeheartedly. Villa will win if the players can carry out Emery game plan.
I voted win and stick by it.
-
Digne in for Moreno.
-
No Carlos on the bench?
-
Let’s funeral these anthem twats.

If I can't follow the game until near the end I usually look on here to see if there are other threads that people have posted to other than the match thread. For example, if there are posts on the Unai Emery thread to the effect of "what a manager, we're so lucky to have him" or "everything spot-on tactics, game management, subs" then you can reckon that all is well before looking at the match thread. If the comments along the lines of "strange team selection" or poor substitutions made too late" usually means we're taking a pasting. Same for the Ollie Watkins thread "superb all round display" and "took both goals really well, deserves his ovation" is always good news, whereas "not at the races today" or "hopeless, but then they've all been" doesn't bode well. If I go straight to the Match Thread then the first comment is usually "FFS" or "Shit" irrespective of the score which usually causes a little bit of wee to come out.

Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, Bailey, McGinn, Luiz, Ramsey, Kamara, Watkins.
Out of possession I reckon Bailey tucks in narrow, McGinn and Ramsey as the extra fullbacks.
