Villa 1 Bradford 0. League division 2. The relief that day. I could cry when I realise it was 35 feckin years ago. Loved those times under SGT.
-
Yeah, what an atmosphere that big crowd generated!
Years later, I met a few Bradford City fans in my local pub and I recalled that game. They had been at it, too. One of them said, "As soon as I saw all those fans on the Holte End, I knew we were gonna lose!"
-
I remember it being really humid adding to the already tense atmosphere. The game was awful as I recall but it was all about the result....
-
Think the crowd was unexpected as well, I think Platt was quoted saying ‘when we ran out and saw all the fans we would all have died for Villa’ or somesuch. That feeling didnt last long for him.
-
My brother was in Ibiza so I had to go with my mate and his dad for once, remember seeing loads of Bradford fans by the Tyburn House on the way in, and that picture of Platt meeting that cross from my position right down the front of the Holte is burned in my memory
-
Going from memory - Google is cheating- the crowd was 36,000, which seemed massive. It was a great atmosphere though.

It was 36,000 from memory, and apart from the Liverpool cup game was miles bigger than any other crowd we had that season, the closest other was the rags early in the season.

A long time ago now and I was young at the time, but I read something the other day about hoe precarious our position was going into that last game at Swindon. Was it two other results we needed to go our way?

We needed to better the results of Bradford and Middlesborough, who were both at home to mid table clubs with nothing to play for, so we all assumed we'd have to win to stand any chance

Swindon is a whole other story...what a day that was.

I still find it mad that it was my first away game, apparently my brother got tickets just from booking with the travellers club
-
I didn't go to Swindon, the moody tickets my mate got were absolute shit, they looked they had been drawn in crayon then photocopied, I didn't think we'd get in with them and he didn't. He did get in as a steward though, no training in them days, they just gave him a orange bib and told him to stand out of the way.

Attendance was 36,423.

Were they any play offs in those days? I remember at some point in the 80s it was just a play off with one of the 1st Division teams as Boro and Chelsea had that massive riot and they basically restructured it to Wembley as a result.

They came in the year we went down. ’87/'88 boro came up too, chelsea went down.

Yes, sides that finished 3-5th in division 2 and the side that finished 18th im div 1. That was the season of the Chelsea v Boro game.
-
Wasn’t there rather a lot of trouble at Chelsea that game? Police horses and such.

I was 14 during the Bradford game and it was so exciting being in that crowd that felt huge at the time, crowds were generally much lower then. It was really tense as we really needed to win, we’d lost a few before that from memory. A mate got me what might have been a dodgy ticket for Swindon but my parents wouldn’t let me go. Again from memory, all it would of took is one of Blackburn or Boro to better our result at Swindon, we drew but they both lost by one goal at home I think, the stars aligned for us.
Chelsea lost to Boro in that play off game and got relegated. Those years have gone too quick.
